Happy Friday! Today we are chatting about sugar cravings and how to stop them naturally! I hope some of these resonate and are helpful. I would love to hear what tips you have found helpful in your experience as well!
So glad You did this today because I was a no sugar person for years and fell off the wagon due to many factors that you mentioned. Stress from needing a home and emotional sadness. My functional doctor has said that I wasn’t getting enough protein and that is an issue as you said. Homeostasis is sooo key! It can be easy (if u stay there) but I find having the right tools (kitchen necessities) around you and ability to obtain healthy food makes a big difference! Thank you again. These reminders are the things that help us to get back on track. For instance, I haven’t bought a box of cereal in years until yesterday. I saw a RU-vid video with the “Dunkin” cereal and they said that it smelled like coffee beans. Next day I was in the store and grabbed a box. (Can’t have coffee due to acidity and I love it) careful everyone, of those subtle advertisements, that will get you when you’re in the store. Good luck. 🥰. Wish I could get into some type of “beat the sugar” addict group. I’m sure there are some on Facebook. Good luck all 💓
Menopause and post menopause is something I was NOT prepared for. Sleeplessness, hot flashes, irritability and apathy amidst life changes have been overwhelming. Thank you for these good tips from your video.
@Clean & Delicious Your video explains a lot. I have always had a horrible sweet tooth. Do you have any extra suggestions for someone who is unable to increase protein due to health reasons (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome)? It's also the cause of constant fatigue which can't be alleviated by simple fixes (or anything tbh) I am on 7 medications that increase my appetite so my weight has become a problem. At first it wad a good thing as I was always borderline underweight before my diagnosis (constant stomach issues made me want to rarely eat) but over the years, with each new medication and having a child, I have steadily gained 70 pounds. I would love to be rid of 50. But would be satisfied with 25. I went on phenterimine and lost 20 over a year, but I couldn't maintain eating only 1200 to 1500 calories a day, so over the next year and a half i gained 35. I am unable to exercise as it releases histamine. I know you will say consult a dietician or whatever, but I live in a rural area with a lot of poverty, and so there aren't many doctors and I couldn't afford one if there were. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
I’ve heard that sugar cravings could also be related to dehydration. Every time I am craving sugar, I drink a big cup of water and most of the time it helps.
1. Avoid excess artificial sugars, switch over to honey, maple syrup or stevia 2. Rest, nap, meditation, take a walk 3. Est naturally sweet fruits 4. Get the right levels of proteins 5. Take care of your emotional state
I would just change meditation with reading the Bible. Just a tip when I crave something sweet after a meal, I eat some grapes and I’m fine. This could differ from person to person. God bless you my friends. In Jesus’ name.
@@stoner_vinny Grapes are very high in fructose. Not a very helpful strategy. I totally agree with replacing meditation with a Bible reading. What better way to replenish energy than to spend time with the Creator.
Coming from a beekeeper, get local honey. A lot of store bought honey is from overseas or a long distance away. It's also been pasteurized, which takes all the beneficial stuff and cooks it away. Stay local. Eat local. 🐝🌻
I definitely support eating local as much as possible. However, for anyone reading without access to local honey there are a couple of companies that have raw, unpasteurized honey. Nature Nate's has raw, unpasteurized honey available in both organic and non-organic. I've ordered theirs from Sam's Club and Kroger before during quarantine or winter time when our market's closed. We prefer to shop with our local beekeepers at the farmer's market. There are three keepers who sell honey along with other produce, baked goods, and spreads. Local is the best and the freshest!
Yep raw honey has enzymes good for you honey comb great to chew on...especially if your losing eyebrows or lashes its freaky it helps stop oxidative stress.
@@benca6151 love the taste also real maple syrup in the whiskey jug soooo yummy also has good health benefits honey turns to glycogen in your body if you let it melt in your mouth slowly with plain yogurt good for wasted muscles when working out a lot 😁
The sugar craving always start with emotions :-( I noticed if I am feeling depressed or unloved or just plain old sad, I will reach for CHOCOLATE! I have really worked at allowing myself say, no more than 3 small pieces of chocolate when I am unhappy. And I also try and remember all the things I am really GRATEFUL for. If I am really moody, I will begin by wiggling my toes (which usually makes me smile since I have started at the "bottom") and it is silly to be grateful for wiggling my toes, then I try to recap all the beautiful things in my day. Gratitude is grace!!!
I love how you mention that it’s ok to have a piece of chocolate to bring you back to homeostasis. I used to beat myself up for having some sugar when I felt upset but I have realized sometimes that’s just what you need to feel better at that moment until you figure out what’s bothering you! Just don’t make sugar a habit. Great video!!! Great content!!!
I had a blood test and found out I didn't have enough protein. As soon as I increased my protein my sugar cravings went away almost completely. It blew my mind. This video is spot on
I’m on day 3 of no sugar. I have a brutal sugar addiction and I hit bottom a few days ago. So no sugar in my coffee and no honey in the cereal, no candy at work and no desert after dinner.
@@CleanandDeliciousDani i have cravings for deserts like choc cakes cheese cakes and puddings. I now use stevia and erythritol in all my deserts and managing my sugar cravings well. Thank you for your ideas. God bless
tips that have helped me personally: 1. eat a complete meal with PROTEIN!!! 2. when you get the craving, drink water 3. drink hot coffee or tea (preferably no sugar added) 4. be mindful (maybe write down how you feel, bc a lot of times is just anxiety 😬) 5. find something to do maybe you are just bored. 6. go for a walk 7. if the cravings are REALLY BAD. eat a fruit rich in fiber, such as pear, apples or berries. 8. dark chocolate (70 or 80% cacao)
Whenever i go early to bed hat is by 10pm and have a sound sleep my sugar carvings were nil or almost minimal the following day. Therefore I would conclude by saying sleep patterns and time of sleep also play a vital role in sugar cravings.
Yes so true about that point at 3:50! I always notice whenever I am sleep deprived, I have less self control and often eat something unhealthy, and you explained so well why that happens. All of the points in the video were so interesting to hear!
I'm a big advocate of using local honey as many have mentioned. Instead of sugars I'll use maple syrup or honey instead (like in oatmeal). I read this tip in a magazine years ago: To reduce a chocolate craving choose a darker chocolate and start with just a square, instead of chewing it, allow the square to melt on your tongue and pool in your mouth. It gives that dopamine rush without a tonne of calories and I swear you will not want more, it satiates your chocolate and sweets craving. It really works!
Wow! This was so spot on. Working through a sugar addiction and I always ignore my tiredness and push through. I say no to hanging out with friends all the time because I’m scared or want to get more things done and end up very lonely, and eat to comfort myself. You hit the nail on the head.
Thank you for sharing this video. I usually do fairly well with sweets three of the four weeks in a month. But "that" week, my hormones have me hunting down sugar like a wild bear. I have tried to substitute with fruit, keeping all sugar out of the house, etc, but I still crave it. I will hike in a blizzard to get a piece of chocolate. These tips are very helpful ☺
This definitely helped me. Lately, I've been feeling very overwhelmed with everything that I need to get done and at the same time, I've had more sugar cravings. So I need to give myself some time each day to just do something that helps me to de-stress and get to a more 'happy' place. Thanks for the info. God bless.
Sugar cravings are real. I wish fruit stopped me from wanting a slice of chocolate cake but it doesn't. Sugar is put into everything that isn't whole foods in the supermarkets because it sells. In the U.K. GMO's are not allowed to be put in the food. But it's perfectly fine to do so in the U.S.A. All our groceries should be organic and we shouldn't have to spend more money to get everything organic. No wonder so many Americans are obese. Most people don't stand a chance against the "non food" sold on the shelves of almost every supermarket chain. Thank you for your video, Dani. It's very informative and educational.
I started making muffins using Greek yogurt, honey and whole wheat flour as a base... It works great when adding blueberries, walnuts and spices to fulfill the major sugar cravings. Other times a good cup of brewed herbal fruit tea. 😊. Thank you for the helpful tips, Dani!
This video came at the perfect time. I have been having intense sugar cravings, and now I realize that I need to eat more protein. Thank you for this video!
Have you ever thought of using a slow cooker or Instant pot? You can also make servings to freeze for the week? I find this way very easy. Try it if it interests you.😊
This was great, sweet treats are my biggest cravings. Although Stevia for me has the same aftertaste, and upset stomach issues as the other artificial sweeteners. I do like pure organic honey and pure organic maple syrup. Been watching your channel for a long time! Love your views on good whole foods, and not fad diets!!!
Hey Dani!!! Love your videos:) My biggest hang up is coffee and the (delight)French vanilla creamer. I know it’s not good for me. I cannot seem to find anything to replace it without feeling like I’m depriving myself or feeling rebellious about cutting it out. Can you make a detailed video on how you make your coffee! I want to eventually let go of the creamer, but I want to replace it with better quality.
Just drink black coffe. If organic, its a healthy beverage if you consume in moderation, so 2-3 cups a day. The bitterness also helps to reduce sugar cravings and resets the taste buds. If you need fat in it, try to add a teaspoon of coconut oil - thats my drink after my morning-running-session. Do it for a week and it becomes a habit.
Being a diabetic and having CKD was a demoralising fact when I found out,my doctor wanted me to see a diaticien(nutritionist) but frankly that didn't help much.I felt confused and hopeless so I decided that maybe on the net I would find more information and finally found your channel.I have had better advice from you than I did anyone else.I thank you from the bottom of my heart, you have given me hope and help I need to understand my body more. You are such a smart and knowledgable person and the fact is you know how to convey your knowledge so well.I have watched your videos for maybe a year or less but I don't feel confused or hopeless anymore.Keep on helping those of us who want to know.
This is your first video I watch and I LOVE how you explained everything. I eat a ton of sugar and have been wanting to make a change so understanding this helps a lot. Thank you!!
I've struggled and conquered drug addiction in my life. I've also love sweets all my life. I realize now that sugar is a true addiction. It is no joke. The mad intense cravings i have for sugar are pretty much the same that i had for drugs. What really helps me is to wait out the cravings. It will usually pass in 30 minutes. Or Eat some nuts. Or have a piece of fruit. At least fruit provides fiber, vitamins, minerals, and water. It also gives ur stomach a feeling of fullness. If im craving chocolate, i take a swig of a chocolate protein drink. I don't drink the whole bottle but rather maybe 2 tablespoons worth. It gives me the chocolate flavor to satiate my craving. P.S. Love your videos!
I myself usually reduce the sugar cravings by mejool dates and raw-honey cakes or some cakes being made with organic sprouted flour and organic raw maple syrup
I have been completely abstinent from white refined sugar - including pasta, cakes, pies, ice cream etc for over 20 years through Overeaters Anonymous. I am deeply grateful to be free of sugar and I do not ever use honey or maple syrup. I will use NOW Stevia from time to time. Stevia is a pulverized leaf from South America that does not trigger craving for sugar. Good luck to all of you ....
She said that artificial sweetners make us crave more than regular sugar. I BELIEVE IT!!!! In fact, I noticed a few months ago during my own diet. I recentlly had that artificial crap again, knowing better. So I'm currently battling the cravings. So I'm gathering form your video that I just need to slowly wean myself from it.
For me, controlling my cravings was going Keto for a short time until I felt like I could eat a healthy amount of pasta or carbs without issues. Then I slowly replaced everything with whole grains and fruits. Now I so rarely have a craving for any sweets that when I do get one, I just go buy a small ice cream or my favorite pastry.
Thank you for making this informative video! I really love the last point of the body as a pendulum & trying to maintain the balance. I’m always craving for a midnight snack like chocolate. It’s like something to de-stress & unwind myself after a day of work. So I really like your tips about cutting back the sugar intake.
This is an extremely powerful and well-thought video, Dani. I see your point on rest and fatigue together with unmet emotions. Because I do not consume refined sugars on a daily basis, when I have a sugar craving, I totally give into it in the form of chocolate chips, ice-cream or even pastry. The good thing is that I do not have sugary snacks around so I keep myself accountable.
Your videos make people feel seen and still hold people accountable for their own health. I love this approach! Very motivating and gives graces but keeps folks going.
This was such a great and helpful video! It definitely helped me to understand my sugar cravings better and a few ways to try to take care of those sugar cravings. Thank you!
Love your videos Dani! Recently watching your intuitive eating series and a lot of what you said really resonated with me. Thank you for the info! What happens though if the mindful intuitive eating actually leads to weight gain instead of weight loss? Would love to hear more from you on this topic
Another great video, Dani! Thank you. ❤️I have a question about protein. How many grams of protein do you consume each day (on average)? Most fitness influencers would say one gram per pound of body weight, but I have always struggled to reach the numbers. Any thoughts from you on this would be truly appreciated. ❤️ Have a beautiful day! 🌻
I really enjoy your channel. I gave up cane and beet sugar and artificial sweeteners about six months ago when I noticed that they were one of my migraine triggers. The only sweetener that I have found that I can use is organic dark maple syrup, and I only use it when I bake. I have come to love fruits and there sweetness. I have also lost 50 lbs since making the switch. My migraines have become less frequent as well.
You’re so nice to listen to Dani. I’m healthy and eat very clean but when my brain wants to trick me into sugar I put a dash of cinnamon on my tongue. It works every time. A cinnamon stick in a cup of green tea is also great.
Yes, for me all about emotion but I always have to do a very restrictive diet or i'll end up going off the deep end worse than before! I have been meal planning daily for awhile and have lost 17 pounds and I was glad you mentioned stevia because that has gotten me through. I like to eat stoneyfield with sweetener and fresh fruit mixed altogether. I get a slump in the afternoon and think my blood sugar has plummeted. I'm excited to do the class 😊💙
hi, first of all, i like your advice. secondly, i wonder. if someone works at the F&B in any hotel or restaurant or coffee shop etc.... do you have any advice for them as well? because they are working in a specific time schedule everyday. they dont have chance to go out for a walk any time that they need.
Hello from Washington state! I just started my clean eating journey ! I’m already 3 weeks in! So far I’ve lost 6 pounds just by watching what I eat and eliminating processed foods! I feel great and Im loving this new lifestyle! Thank you so much for sharing all of your knowledge ! It’s been all so inspirational to me!
Thank you, you made several things understandable that were confusing to me. Example: the reason being tired makes you want sugar is my body is so smart it's looking for a quick energy fix. I'm obese and have been working on losing weight. I know being tired will cause me to graze for sugar or carbs. Plus I don't want to prepare quality foods later in the day. I can't sleep more than about 6 hours a night. But when I take naps they're almost always 2 hour naps, I feel I waste so much of the day I try to stay awake to get my sleep at night. It rarely works because I can fall asleep in a chair in the middle of the day. I try going to bed earlier and do all the things I've heard to do to be ready to sleep. But it's the wake up thing, once I'm awake there's no going back to sleep. It's almost always 6 hours no matter what time I go to bed. If I'm in bed at 9:00 I'm up at 3:00 so I try to go to sleep at 10:00 or later because 4:00 or 5:00 feels like an ok time to wake up. Thanks for the information.
This is an incredibly helpful post - thank you so much. I love the information about feeling contracted and the body looking for something expansive. Lots to think about there!
I love getting in a quick 10-20 minute nap but the big problem for me is when I wake up from that nap my cravings for sugar are intense and supercharged 😫
Get tested for sleep disorders if you are always reaching for something sweet to get through the day. I suffered for 15 plus years with undiagnosed severe sleep apnea, rousing 63 times per hour. I constantly needed to carb load to keep going. Totally destroyed my health.
I used to have a really bad sweet tooth. When I would drink soda one day and then the next day I was thirsty for more soda so I would ignore the cravings by redirecting my mind to do something else like take a walk or just doing something to keep my mind off of the cravings. I don’t drink soda anymore. I tell myself that I don’t need it. I stopped eating junk food and try eating healthy options now. And I’ve lost 14 lbs. in the process. 😃 I reach for a fruit 🍎 now instead of a cookie 🍪.
There's also a lot of insulin released which puts on weight. Because your blood sugar is high. I'm diabetic chocoholic. Need to stop eating it. Need something else to eat at the end of the meal.
Hi (Shalom), Writing from Israel. If u remember me from an email I wrote u, I had gastric bypass surgery to lose weight. I have lost weight and my body, per the type of surgery I have had and blood tests show that I am low in my protein which is terribly annoying to me. I understand that protein is important, however I keep craving salt, and not sugar.. I do drink a protein drink almost every morning, but my body has issues with absorbing nutrients. I try to not buy or eat potatoe chip. Instead, I have 'trained' my body (and myself), to stay clear from most junk food....because i know how I really crave salt. So I buy a lot of zucchini (the light green ones) and scrub or peel them, nuke and eat my zucchini with salt. And I enjoy what I am eating. Yet I still struggle emotionally with the idea that I am eating what I consider to be too much salt. Advice/advise me - and others - about craving salt. I love your calm soothing voice that conveys to the viewers a better way to eating healthier. Blessings, love and prayers, from Israel
I’m glad you are touching on this theme, it’s so crucial. The sugar ist like a drug, the more you eat, the more you would want it. The great thing is, that there’s natural sugar substitutes like stevia and erythritol, which won’t affect the insulin and you can use them for any baking and sweets. You also crave for sweets when you have nutrient deficiencies. Getting enough proteins, good fats, vitamins and minerals reduces sugar cravings incredibly😊I recommend also cardio exercise and fasting so that your body can occasionally go to the fat burning metabolism, which stops not just the sugar craving but give your body time to reset and renew. Thank you for this great video!
Wow! Thank You for taking time out & confirming that for me. I noticed whenever I eat fish or nuts, my sugar cravings reduce drastically. I thought I was just imagining it but I guess we need to pay more attention to what our bodies are asking of us👍.
So informative and so well said. Thank you, Dani ❣ The way the information was given was totally shame free! It really works (if can afford to do it) to give in to you mid-day sleepiness, and take that cat nap.
Thanks Dani! I always love and appreciate your content. Just curious...you did not mention Monk Fruit in your video, and I know you have baked with it in the past. Do you feel like it falls into the category of artificial sweeteners that ultimately encourage sugar cravings?
Causes other than already mentioned: - timed habits, fruit after dinner for example or at the end of the day. Reduction strategies: - I eat about 350/500 total grams of different types of vegetables with every meal and I eat 4/6 times per day. This aids in feeling full because of the amount of fiber. - carb timing. In my case just before training and when I'm not in a deficit, also after. - Strong flavoured tea (without sugar ofcourse) during or after a meal - frozen fruits - often eat low calorie dense foods in order to relearn and appreciate the natural 'sweetness' of those types of food and experiment with different temperatures in order to maximise that effect. Think of heated carrots or onions for example. - if it truly is a conscious choice from a perspective of health or to aid reaching a certain goal, say to yourself 'it is my choice to leave it'. - reassess if there might be a source of hidden sugar in a certain product that may cause a trigger. - replace the habit by consuming something with an opposing flavor profile.
I definitely come from the emotional side. Sugar has been a way to treat my depression while alcohol to treat my anxiety. I would feel better, but only momentarily. I can rule out others like protein since I meal plan and that has been accounted for. My progress has been a slow weening of those things. That seems to be working for me. An example, instead of getting a coke or pepsi at a drive thru, I would get a lemonade, then eventually I went down to getting only unsweet tea. I don't miss the coke or the lemonade. When it comes to alcohol I would only buy enough for 1 night instead of a supply that lasts me a week or more; effectively using my laziness to help me by making myself have to drive everyday to get more. Then, slowly increasing the gaps of time between nights of drinking. A week, then a couple weeks, then to a month, and so on. As far as dealing with the root emotional issues, talking about it to those I trust helps a lot for me. My emotional issues aren't a fast heal, so I have had to learn patience with myself along the way and forgive myself when I do cave into cravings. The more I keep trying the easier it becomes.
Thank you so much! Number 5 would be my problem area. And some sleep or not getting enough good rest at night. I’m just dealing with my childhood trauma and I’m starting a new business and I’ve been single for the last 13 years. I will tell you it has been so tough. My diet is pretty but when I get a little stressed I hear the sweets calling me. Sometimes I’m ok other times I’m not. My go to is chia pudding with strawberries with cacao chocolate bits, or an apple with raw nuts pecans or walnuts, pumpkin seeds. Plus water…. I walk every day been fasting too hard to get some weight off. So I don’t know. …. But this a great video thanks again! I will be paying close attention to my triggers.❤️😇🙏🏽
The point about you being stressed or off balance is so true. I'd recommend journalling or meditation as a great way to deal with that issue instead of turning to sugar.
Great explanation and practical ways to ease sugar cravings. I have been using your oatmeal apple protein muffins to address the sugar cravings and they are a big help.
Great information.....Taking something out; need to add something good.... substituting with natural sweeteners, like date Sugar, sucanat sugar, making homemade desserts as opposed to store bought.
I have tried to come off sweeteners for ages and could not do it. I have started to use your method and it works a treat and don’t need to much honey or maple syrup. However, one effect I am observing is that my mood is improving, which, given these are not the easiest of times, is slightly bizarre, but obviously very welcome. I know mood is made up of complex factors but nothing else has changed in my personal circumstances and the weather is pretty miserable, which I normally feel a bit grumpy about. Have you come across this before? In any case I thank you so much for the tip. I’ll keep you posted how things are going! 😊😊😊😊🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
When you say artificial sweetener, can you please be more specific? It sounds like Stevia is an acceptable alternative. But what about the Stevia and Monkfruit that have erythritol and dextrose added in. Are those problematic? And thank you for such a great video!
Good job……I lost 54 pounds last year and what keeps me motivated and/or gets me back on track when I go off is looking at my old pictures when I was 54 pounds heavier. Hard to believe it was me! It really gets me focused again and helps me ….good luck
I’m confused about “artificial sweetener tastes sweeter than real sugar”. For me Coke Zero tastes way less sweet than normal Coke. I drink Coke Zero (yes I know, obviously not healthy either way) because normal Coke is disgustingly sweet.
Interesting. I can't speak directly to Coke Zero b/c I don't know much about it but generally speaking most artificial sweeteners on a 1:1 ratio are much sweeter than regular sugars.
@@CleanandDeliciousDani you’re definitely right if comparing on a 1:1 ratio, but the amounts of artificial sweetener added to food is not anywhere close to what it would be with sucrose/fructose. They use negligible amounts to achieve the same sweetness as sucrose. In fact after a certain sweetness threshold, the taste becomes bitter so I’m not so sure that is in fact much sweeter in the mouth.
I can only speak to what she is saying and its application to coffee. I have used regular sugar, monk fruit, raw sugar and sweet n low. The latter makes my coffee taste like heaven. I used it all summer because I could not find sugar in the raw in my local stores. I started back using raw sugar about a month ago and the difference is night and day. I’ve never tried stevia before though. I am definitely on a hunt for the “best” quality sugar because I drink coffee everyday.
I actually used artificial sweetener as a way of stopping sugar altogether in coffee. I substituted my teaspoon of sugar in coffee to Splenda and because I didn’t enjoy the taste I kept reducing the amount of Splenda in my coffee to the point I stop using it altogether. Everytime I reduced it, I gave myself time to get used to the new taste, then reduced it again a little more and so on. Best thing I did
Exactly! I've never understood anyone that says artificial sweeteners are sweeter than real sugar! They are BITTER tasting, that's one of the reasons I stay away from them! These tips are great, but I've tried them all, and they don't work for me :-( I'm so addicted to sugar, but not giving up. I do my best to eat as healthy as possible, but I have an insatiable craving for sweets! @ Clean & Delicious, I've made a few of your recipes and love them! Thank you so much for some healthy sweet recipes :-) Btw my name is Brenda, my daughter decided to take over my email acct lol, need to get it switched back.
Glad to hear sugar elimination tips! BTW-I just watched the S'more's video! Your daughter is adorable and refreshing!! Since I taught middle school for twenty-five years, thus, I know!!
Very good and informative but just like any bad habit, we need to take a step forward and want to work/ break the bad habits and that first step is one of the biggest challenge. Good luck to all of us 🙂
Thank you! great video, when I get through eating I have too have something sweet it's so hard breaking it. I did break eating sweet before going to bed because I realize it was giving me hot flashes what I hate.
