Jamel, greetings from Australia! 🇦🇺 Have you had recommendations for any Aussie bands? Here’s 2 for you to try: 1. Midnight Oil - Beds are burning. 2. Divinyls - I touch myself Cheers & keep up the great work!
Bro! If you like gospel organ, check out this live performance of "Stop That Train" by The Jerry Garcia Band. Trust me. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_wE3GXBefvs.html
I heard these guys live in concert 50 years ago when this was a hit. Maybe their only hit. I remember that they were a very solid band who put on a good concert.
@@keepondrinkin2 i disagree. Its not just a matter of nostalgia and subjectivity. Today's music has NO melody. I was born in 1958, but i also like music from before my time
One thing about this generation we knew how to jam, sing and write. Need a little bit more of that today. Love your reviews and sharing the peace and love.
One must remember, up until the 70s records were usually no longer than 3 minutes long. Radio stations would not play anything longer. In the 70s, rock and roll began moving to the FM dial; and FM rock stations would play longer records. But AM radio still held to the 3 minute rule. So, many artists released longer songs as album cuts, with shortened versions to be released on 45 rpm. AM stations played the 45 version while the FM stations played the album version. There was a station where I grew up that would play entire albums, and would tell you what albums were coming up. Get your tape deck ready.
KPPC in Pasadena church basement. Late night album cuts with B. Mitchell Reed.. he went on to KMET.. The Beamer from Brooklyn to LA via SF possibly. Got to visit him in the hospital via a mutual friend. Bitter, sweet but memorable. RIP
There is a video of Neil Young going into a record store in the early 1970s with this song blasting away in the store. He finds some bootleg records, takes one of his, breaks and buys a candle and is on his way.
I love this channel. People sharing their experiences good and sad. And when bad, their are such sweet comments to relate and attempt to comfort. Love is all we need!
Until I got to High School I was the only green eyed person around and even then there were only two others. I was called spooky and witch girl. When this song came out I was so happy. In a sea of brown and blue instead of feeling like a freak I felt special. Thanks for bringing back that feeling!
Wow. I love my green eyes and my parents and older brother have green eyes and one brother got blue. Green are rare and beautiful. I guess the kids were jealous, dumb and cruel and unfortunately comments when we're young can hurt deeply. Glad you found something to help at the time. Green eyes rule!!! : )
I was seriously crushing on a girl with green eyes when this song came out. She hated her green eyes, her red hair and her freckles, and thought I was lying when I said I loved them. My final argument was' "If red hair, green eyes and freckles WEREN'T sexy, all the Irish would've died out centuries ago". She didn't buy that either.
This was the song that I dedicated to my beautiful green eyed lady. After 44 years ,she's still my beautiful green eyed lady. Thanks sugar booger.😁😁😁👍👍👍🙌
I grew up in Denver, where this band hailed from. In the 70’s the best live music around was in small clubs that served beer that only had an alcohol content of 3.2%, but you only had to be 18 years old to get in. Prior to rebranding themselves as Sugarloaf they were known as “Chocolate Hair”. They blew the roof off those clubs.
This song is all about the Greek goddess Aphrodite. Venus in Roman mythology. They call her “Ocean’s lady” because she first emerged from the ocean standing on a giant sea shell. She’s “Passion’s lady” because she was the goddess of love, beauty, pleasure and fertility. One of the funkiest songs out there.
@@nancy9478 Tales of Brave Ulysses, by Cream...opening lyrics; "Her name is Aphrodite and she rides a crimson shell". Referencing Botticelli's legendary, Renaissance painting.
I only ever heard the short version on the radio, as a kid, but I loved it, too. Your joy and amazement really turned it up, for me, on this song. Keep on rocking, Brother J.
My music teacher would have us listening to classical, rock, country. Then at times, stop the music, and asks us what instrument was playing, talk about learning music, and what was used to do it. I learned to love all music.
@@clydekimsey7503 ...... Only if you call top-10 low. "Green-Eyed Lady" peaked at #3. "Don't Call Us, We'll Call You" peaked at #9. Kinda hard to be a one hit wonder when you have two top-10 hits, wouldn't you say ???
@@yomogami4561 That's why my kids love these old time songs. My kids always says dad knows best lol. Got to keep these songs going for many many years : )
The "Green-Eyed Lady" in this song is referencing Gaia -- [the Earth] -- With lines about the ocean, and thinly-veiled lyrics like "Dressed in love, she lives for Life to be", the groove & beat help one to 'connect' with the One True Mother.... Blessed Be, & Peace, brother-- glad you enjoyed the ride!!
Yes,finally! I've been steadily requesting this for over 6month cause I knew you would dig it. So glad for this reaction. ❤😉 When that organ kicked it and you gave your best stank face....priceless.
When I was in high school, my little sister knew how much I loved Sugarloaf, and this song inparticular, so she saved all her money and bought me the cassette. It was the sweetest thing and we still talk about that Christmas and how proud she was to give me that gift. So glad you enjoyed it!
Baselines don't get any more iconic. I'm one of those who just calmly suggest on occasion. If I had to pick another song from the era with another iconic bassline or rift, I'd go with "Spirit In The Sky" by Norman Greenbaum, but you may have already reacted or already know.
Tar Heel can’t imagine Jamel’s never heard it. It’s been featured in so many movies, TV shows etc. Still one of my favorite songs of all time. Was there ever a catchier pop tune?
@@rich56ca I dunno. I'm constantly surprised in how many reactors have not heard iconic songs (or at least claim that). YT search indicates JJ had heard "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" but not "Baker Street" as examples. I did not see a JJ reaction to "Spirit".
Shower thought/galaxy brain moment I just had after four decades of performing and listening to music: A guy like Jerry Corbetta of Sugarloaf playing a groovy rhythmic solo like this one on a Hammond organ is using exactly the same approach and the same rhythms as a DJ cutting records. I never heard it before watching Jamel's reaction to this song. Seriously, think about it - play this solo on a turntable instead of an organ and tell me what it sounds like. Probably pretty freaking dope. Mind: blown.
Oh Jamel 🔥🔥 Here we go!!! They had a killer song in 1975 “Don’t Call Us” Check it out sometime! Late 60’s & early 70’s were all about the keyboards 🎹 ♥️🔥
LOL, you reached back into my childhood with that classic! Love the reaction, I always liked the bass line on this, you know any song with an intro that many bars long got to be solid doc! Peace
I have green eyes and my mom used to sing this song to me all the time when I was younger. She passed away suddenly in April due to a brain aneurysm. This song brings back so many memories. Thank you so much for this Jamel. ❤️
Calla Lily , so sorry for the lost of your mom. I know the feeling. It’s been 13yrs since my mom passed and I miss her everyday. But with lots of good memories & great times to remember, it gets better.God bless you and your family 🙏🏾💕
This is why we miss our old music. Young people like my grown kids think it’s stupid but we literally had the most awesome music back in my day. I was born in 1967. Growing up on all this music was heaven.
I met the now-deceased Jerry Corbetta (lead singer of Sugarloaf) several times in the 90s when he played with the Classic Rock All Stars. Nice fella! The band ALWAYS played this tune. Love it cos I am a green-eyed lady!
@@beatledad Never saw them with Mark Farner! Probably the best time I saw them was at a local festival with Bobby Kimball of Toto, who flew in specifically for the show. As it happened, original Toto bassist David Hungate was also there working with another artist. He came over and joined in for a few numbers. Unexpected and awesome! And I met Bobby after the show.
It's so hard to believe that people who love music dont know all these songs. Growing up, I listened to all my parents, from the 40' & 50's. Then I've listened to everything since. 60's through now.
One of my all-time favorite songs. I was 10 years old when this was first played on my favorite radio station in Chicago. I believe the lead singer was just 19 at the time of this recording. Incredible pipes he has for sure...
I was 16 years old when this song came out in 1970. The long version quickly became a popular “make-out song” back then. Even after all these years, hearing this song makes my tongue and jaw feel tired. As always, thanks for the tunes, smiles and memories.
This song has always been a perfect example of B3 Hammond organ at it's finest. The organist has great command of when to fire up the leslie speakers (which rotate the speaker inside the case to give the pulsating swell). Great Drummer too. Great Song.
Lost my green eyed Lady this year ! Looking forward to Seeing her again in Glory . This really brought back some memories ! Some tears and some smiles. Wow! Roller coaster ! The ability to create music, is one of God's Greatest gifts. Thanks for sharing this
Dude... total California slang here.... this was my intro to bands like steelie dan .. war ... Chicago Santana.. tower of power.. it has the total power of jazz behind it .. totally cool.. just makes you feel good ..
This version was a staple at our weekend dance parties when i was in high school up to 1971. This band along with others like Brian Auger Trinity...ELP. gave me my enduring love of keyboards in rock.
Thank you for reacting to my fav all time tune.......i'm a keyboard player and that organ solo still blows me away......plus the organ and bass player both playing that funky bass line......plus love the singing.......yes the LONG version some people don't know what they're missin with the short version......Jerry sings lead and plays organ and co-wrote the tune......TALENT
I have to tell you I've heard this song since I was eight years old - all my life - and watching you react to this made me appreciate it SO MUCH MORE than I ever have in my life! YOU rock, Jamal!
I'm sitting here watching RU-vid videos, and decide to light up some sandalwood incense. Then Jamel whips this out!!! All of a sudden I'm back in 1970 bogartin' a joint, and freaking out to this song! Love me some Sugarloaf, and always searching for that green eyed lady... Keep on rockin' out brother! This is one of the ringtones on my phone... I feel so lucky to have been born at the time when the BEST rock-n-roll was created...
One of the greatest bass lines ever. 🧡Jamel, I want to recommend that you react to Canned Heat - “Going up the country” and “On the road again.” (Part of me wants to see you react to the entire Woodstock concert footage...)
I've been listening & watching 4 a couple of yrs now & I must say, I absolutely positively luv u! I'm 72 yo & i lived thru this fantastical music era! How blessed am I? I went 2 so many concerts back in rne day that I can't even counr them! Ty 4 taking me back 2 thise days! I luv ur reactions
“Do it again... let me give my face a break...” dude, I just want to hang out with you. You have the best vibe! At the end of a crazy day, your videos just make me smile. I grew up on a lot of the music you react to. It makes me stoked to see you enjoy classic music. ✌️
In high school, early on, there was a girl with the most startling green eyes I have ever seen. She was slim, graceful, beautiful and so far out of my league I could not imagine even saying hello to her. Of course my infatuation with her evaporated over the summer and I had a real girlfriend that fall who, of course, was also way out of my league. (Aren't they all.) "Green Eyed Lady " was released and received lots of air time during my insanity and to this day, 50 years later, (OMG) I still see my "green eyed lady" with perfect clarity whenever I hear this song. Thank You.
now im imagining driving down the highway in my '65 Ford Falcon convertible on a summer night in '74. there is SO MUCH life in this music! thanks for the ride, Jamel! PS: i love when someone suggests a song that i know will knock your socks off....i nodded my head vigorously and wait for it to happen. Peace out!!
Jamal- I’m a 59 year old white guy from the northeast. I can’t possibly explain how much I enjoy watching you react to some of my old favorites: Steely Dan, The Band, Boz Scaggs. As you said : doesn’t matter who you are or where your from.
Sugarloaf opened for Iron Butterfly.... at University of Puget Sound ! In Tacoma. Saw them in '76 ! SO many shows at UPS ! (very rich school) SO many bands played there ! ;-) Great place with 6000 people ! Saw TOOL there ! in '96 ! ....... so many more
I still love the sound of the organs used in 70s rock. The lead singer wrote the song about his girlfriend who the other band members used to refer to as the green eyed lady. That’s the lead singer playing the organ solo. One of my favorite songs from the early 70s, thank you for reviewing and doing your shoulder dance to it.
WOOOHOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! To continue the Green theme I highly recommend “ Green Onions” by Booker T and the MG’s- it COOKS! They were the house backing band at Stax Records in Memphis and played for all the soul acts there including Otis Redding at Monterey Pop. Booker T also kicks it at Daryl’s house LIVE on Green Onions, too.
What a great song! I used it for a ringtone for my late wife. It took a long time for me to be able to listen to it again. As far as Sugarloaf is concerned, what a fantastic band. Sadly, as far as I know, they were a one-hit-wonder. I can't think of anything else they did. But they made their mark. You look like you really dug it. That makes two of us! Greg in TN
