I don't think any human in the history of mankind has been cooler in a moment, or more badass than Jake E. Lee in this video. Just fucking unreal, so sick!
Andre Richard true jake underrated guitarist he deserves more than mediocre he's excellent virtuoso I love his work with Badland also man what a guitar player 🎸
Andre Richard I used to think he was talentless hack, but this video is blowing me out of water. Wow. Alex Lifeson is before him, no matter what. But him and Alex share a unique fun filled stage presence! I'm proud of both of them. Not trying to stir up an argument.
Criminally underrated, and THE ONLY guitarist of the time that could step into Randy's shoes and not sound like a temporary sub. That said, the S.S. solo on Tribute is still in my mind at least, the best three minutes of live solo guitar ever recorded.
But he plays lot of notes that make no sense and slop. He muffles his runs then plays these wide hammer ons that have no musical value. I saw him on this tour and it was just ummm ok.. Not anything great. So no he muffled his way through Randy's stuff. He DEF COULD NOT step into Randy's shoes. I saw them both up close. Randy was the O.G.
That hair pull must've hurt like a bitch. I give props to Jake for still pulling through without snapping the fuck out on the Ozzman here. Trust me, I have an afro, people like to pull on it like it's rope.
+Jack Stryder Jesus I would of quit playing the solo, and slapped Ozzy for that insane hair pull. WTF was OZZY thinking. I bet Jake told him after the show. Dude don't ever fucking pull my hair like that again. I couldn't believe the intense yanking. Maybe he was pissed Jake was playing too long. Who knows what brought that on, maybe pure adrenaline. DUNNO, but uncalled for.
+Tommy Armour nah! it was just showmanship. He probably pulled Jake's hair a ton of times on both the BATM and TUS tours. I hope Jake didn't take too much offense to it.
Its called 'Show Business' for a reason. You're on stage because you are different to the punters and in the emotion of the performance. If someone asks you what you do, do you answer solidly 'musician' or feably 'I.T. Support but I play a bit of guitar'. Its an iportant point and if you want to get on in the industry you have to completely absorb that you are a performer and your persona is whats onstage. If you're lucky then thats the real you - these people are rare! :o)
Brad Gillis doesn't have a clue saying Zack Wylde is a better guitarist than Jake. He filled Randy's shoes better than anyone. Jake is a phenomenal underrated guitar god!!!! 🤘🎸
@@jameshenderson9830 I saw Brad on that tour replacing Randy and for a dude that had less than a week to learn everything, he killed it. Very tough shoes to fill for sure. Never saw the Bernie show. Impossible situation all around. Jake is amazing here.
what never ceases to amaze me is Jake here is completely different to Badlands jake. It's almost as if for the ozzy gig Jake put on his best shred god abilities and pulled it off well, but you can tell in the badlands material he's a classic rocker to the core, loads of jimmy page/cream era clapton stuff coming through that which really is impressive the way he can do both so seamlessly well. Too many shredders sound like they have tourettes when they try and play classic rock
The thing I love most about Jake's playing is it wasn't obvious where he was going to go when he played his solos. With Zak you can kind of guess what the next set of pentatonic scales is going to be but Jake just has more to offer musically.
He’s not underrated he just got left behind when Yngwie,Vai,Satriani,Becker,Gilbert and Impellitteri came out. That was some groundbreaking stuff at the time and Jake wasn’t delivering the goods.
Randy Rhoads then Jake then zakk then Gus g. Randy was just out of this world insane...just seen that that's how Ozzy had them in his group..we Miss Randy alot.....
Saw them while I was on vacation(I was 10 yrs. old) Honolulu 1984 BATM tour.We had to beg my mom to take us.She finally caved. Will never forget that vacay!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!! Dears Mr.OzzY !! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!! dear Mr.Jake E.Lee!! the fantastish rock n roll the band!!!!! Very very cool!! Rock n roll!!
Just thinking about the level of showmanship while not missing a note. Truly insane! I can barely move from my comfy stance or I’ll fudge the whole solo
*funny how the styles change in time, this is 1984 and Jake's got the typical style of most musicians with the things tied on his elbows and a few other things, leather some spikes the one glove....now to show the difference look at Hendrix, in Hendrix plays Berkeley may 1970 or the isle of Wight in August 1970. Hendrix had the tassles as part of his outfits..even Woodstock 69,he had those tassles, but it shows u really how much the styles change but they don't...this is 14 years after Hendrix died....like Randy wasn't flamboyant and he didn't need it..he was already that good, he knew it but it didn't go to his head, Randy would never done most of the things Jake did here..but im not comparing them. If u asked me id say that he's totally underrated and is really fuking good.. after Randy it's too bad Jake didn't stay with Ozzy longer.. BATM is a fantastic album ..guess im trying to point out for the way the styles evolved. Hendrix would be even greater had he lived a longer life..he's still the best and imo this is why he stands out...it came so natural to him.....but anyhow Jake looks like dimebag Darrell in the 80s alot of musicians looked the same but Dems the times kinda like kiss in the 80s dressing up like glam rockers..no makeup...anyhow in closing I miss Randy, I have since I heard his playing after listening to no more tears, I went and bought other Ozzy albums.. borrowed DOAM in like 92...blew my 10 yr old ears..Randy's playing is insane on both albums.the solo in over the mountains is amazing and still blows my mind...I wish it were Randy onstage here...we were robbed of his future plans but obviously we don't know where he would of went had he lived...anyhow hit on alot of things here just my 2 cents...if ur gonna reply let's have a discussion and no hate this is just my opinion*
His work with Badlands was badass. As far as Ozzy goes he was a real trooper,. When he talked about being on tour and Ozzy would come to his hotel room and wake him up at 3 in the morning with a song idea but be so fucked up Jake couldn't understand a word he was saying and Ozzy would get frustrated with him. If it wasn't for the good payday I'm sure Jake would have walked, he should have before he got fired
"Hey, Jake! You're such a great guitarist! We've had 2 multi-platinum albums in a row! Let us take you to dinner! Oh, by the way, you're fired." ~Ozzy & Sharon (1986)
Just think about it, young talented, and in probably the best band of that time. And having all those people screaming for something you created... It's intoxicating just thinking about it !!!
Filling an emotional void after someone passes is a monumental task. Its the same thing Jason Newsted dealt with after Cliff Burton passed. Fairly or not that always seems to be held against the next person. I agree that Jake was a great guitar player in his own right.
@@elitetrader5468 not being told what to wear by the wife of the lead singer of the band, not being pushed out of the band, but being paid properly and given proper credit for the body of work he contributed to Ozzy
@goodenuffgarage3673 - I've heard Ozzy mention a few times in interviews, even into the Zack days, that Shot In The Dark was his personal favorite song in his catalog. I see that this 7 yr old vid popped up on your youtubes radar tonight too 👍
But not all of them can write albums like Bark at the Moon and The Ultimate Sin. Shredding is one thing then there's composition, style and being able to coordinate with a band and in a studio. @@jjmturbo
Ozzy was in the midst of his addictions during this era, but damn Jake is just phenomenal. Not only is he just the most tasteful shredder and composer but he is exciting to watch. He steals the show.
agreed!! Especially during this solo! I first watched this solo in 1984. It's insanely killer and shows Jake's dexterity of the fretboard. Gotta love it when Ozzy grabbed his hair and pulled him down. They put on a great show!
@@dwaynejessome1728 His real name is martin lawrence or something like that out of n.y.c. or jersey ? Front man of black label society. A VERY skilled singer, player, songwriter, husband and father !
@@shanghunter7697 oh okay so Zak is just the character he portrays - part of being VERY skilled is not over playing. Is that something that Martin can do? cause Brother Zak (or does he want to be referred to as father Zak?) the character, overplays all the time
Jake really was a great performer in those days. While doing his crazy act he's still making sense on guitar ! Technique & looks were so important in the eighties . The whole music scene was into fashion & hair styling that it became ridiculous at times, but at least there was a lot going on on stage. They were stars ! What I see today is mostly a bunch of depressed musicians that are in many ways not different from their audiences. The sign of the times ?
That was insane! His Marshall Plexis moded by Jose sound insane! Damn Jake is a master player. You don’t get to that level unless you’ve practiced your ass off! Well done Jake! Beautiful!
@@grahamtaylor8912dear GOD that thumb and pinky stretching is amazing. I heard he was roommates with Warren D’Martini and Warren had big hands and could do stretches on the fretboard easily and Jake had small hands and because he wanted to top Warren he learned how to stretch across the fretboard with his thumb and pinky. So badass.
Jimmy Page is not half Asian. A rumor that was started on a website called allexperts.com about 8 years ago. Page is of Irish/Anglo descent and has already mentioned in past interviews that he doesn't have any Asian ancestry. Page mentioned in a magazine interview that Zeppelin was very popular in Japan when they toured there; is possibly why people would think that he would be considered Asian. Lee is half Japanese, and Van Halen has a little Asian blood which is documented, but not Jimmy Page.
I went to school with him at Mar Vista High in Imperial Beach, California. When he got the gig with Ozzy, none of us were surprised. He was just that good. 😎👍
Jake is great, saw him live with oz But , he's no Randy Rhoads. And I don't say that because he died ... ( Questionably ) . I like Jake's Badlands work , great playing.
One of the best live performances of all time. Just unbelievable skill, poise, technique, look. The total package. And, that guitar STAYED IN TUNE. This is what it's all about. Maybe nothing tops it.
Masterful even when he's divebombing and tuning up perfectly from the peg 2.20 Jake was such a refreshing style away from the neo-classical shred that was emerging from the other guitar masters at the time
edit Randy was screwed also "Bob Daisley: "I didn't see it first-hand but Tommy Aldridge told me that Ozzy punched Randy in the face when he found out Randy wanted to leave. I also heard from a very good source that Sharon went into the office soon after (hours or days) Randy was killed and changed his contract. Mrs. Rhoads had to sue the Osbournes for years for her son's royalties thereafter. Nice little camp, eh?"
I agree w you totally! I recorded this show from t.v. on VHS! Watched it till it wouldn't track anymore. Changed my life!! His performance on the Ultimate Sin tour, just after this one, was equally stellar!! (That one was a store bought VHS!) Sharon wont release these on DVD! :\
When people bitch their guitar won't stay in tune I want to tell them they are still in preschool. You have to OWN the physics of the instrument to even begin being a real player. Being in tune & in time is the basis of everything.
Kevin Whitaker plus he basically wrote all of The Ultimate Sin while ozzy is on rehab. Then when ozzy gets out...hey, got an albums worth of material for ya...thanks, and your also fired. Total crap.
this guy Jake said somewhere that during writing of Ultimate Sin he kept his best ideas for songs for himself. Dunno if used for Badlands as music is so different.
He comes right out with it on Eddie Trunk that he signed an agreement to not claim his publishing rights to those songs, which were HIS material. But he still fucked Sharon's signed agreement because he TALKED about it. "This could put me in hot water... ahh I'm in hot water anyway." ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R0xRC_vusQ0.htmlm14s
@@jumpinjojo Below Yngwie, Nuno, Doug Aldrich, Randy Rhoads, Jason Becker etc. He should have been given the credit they were. He's not talked about half as much as the others. That's what I implied when I said "rating". Having said that this solo is his own interpretation of the solo Randy Rhoads had played on this track.
@@elitetrader5468 My response to your wise ass and rather cynical jibe is that by saying "under rated" we are not necessarily implying that there's a competition where participants are assessed and graded with numbers. It means that we don't acknowledge a Guitar players attributes often enough and give him due credit. This is barebone common sense and that's why 'under rated' is used in many disciplines. But since common sense itself requires clarification in your case I'm only left to believe that you are in some way cognitively challenged...sure whatever..
and almost no rocker was doing Lydian mode in their solos like Jake is doing at the start of this one. I mean, yeah flat 5s were common but he's actually doing Lydian mode here, not just a flat 5. His badassery kept Ozzy afloat after Randy died.
@@TheChefDQ that was the most cringe thing I’ve read. Very hypocritical as well. You point out that he is trying to impress and then try to explain like a teacher when no one asked, and he can say the same to you. And no need to say Jake sux. He beat out hundreds of players for this gig and would blow you away anyday. I doubt you get paid to play guitar on world tours
@@ManosHalividis Actually, George is such an influence on Demartini that he's taken him to task many times in interviews and accused him of ripping him off. He's particularly sore at Warren's vibrato slide which is pure George. But both are great. Jake is very much his own man. I've listened to every influence he's ever cited and can't really hear any of them in his playing, except the faintest hints of Page, Tommy Bolin and Zal Cleminson. Otherwise, Jake is in a class of his own.
That's the kind of performance that sells tickets and albums. Jake was and still is crazy good. Hands down in the top two, he and Rhoads were Ozzy's best.
And just think all this without an artificial harmonic every other note or whammy abuse. Just straight up killing it. Jake was and is a beast...one of my top 10 all time favorite players and influences on my own playing for sure.
Am I the only one completely shocked out of my pants to see him tune his guitar back in tune live in one try one second? Talk about great skills and perfect ears...
My girlfriend is a professional musician. She tunes instruments by ear without the need of any keynote. Right after restringing. You can whistle a tone and she'll tell you the right pitch. I can tune my guitar by ear, or my bass, when I get a note to know where to start. Pretty easy. Even for a kid as long as it's not totally tone-deaf.
@@adminstrativeuser8930 What Angus is saying is that it is a travesty that Jake wasn't walking around with 100 guitars in a gold plated wheelbarrow when he should have been rich and famous. HIGHLY underrated guitarist.

I've always been a Zakk fan. Sadly I never got to see Jake. This clip really shows what an amazing talent that guy is! He got screwed by the unending greed of Sharon. Without Jake and the writing skills of Ozzy's band, the guy would have been a nobody!
one of the best solos i've ever seen. i think randy would've liked jake quite a lot. both are/were virtuosos who play with soul which seems to be missing from the rest. also love seeing that jake is having so much fun, totally in his element.
The Rich Rose they knew each other, all the California rock boys who all played the whiskey a go go in the late 70s and early 80s like warren demartini who was roommates with Jake E Lee, and George Lynch who knew both of them along with Randy rhoads and Eddie Van Halen all knew each other back in those days. All the California boys.
Randy and Jake played with emotion. Zakk though.... some of his solos just seem like a bunch of pentatonic shredding. He's a good guitarist but Jake and Randy were superior and had a flare to their playing that Zakk just doesnt have, at least in my opinion. Sorry Zakk.
The part at 00:52 is just SICK. I remember watching this live on MTV and my jaw hitting the floor and I am thinking fug I have a LONG way to go with the instrument. 40 years later I am still wowed by it.
I wish I could like this video a hundred times over. Jake is so brilliant. I’ve been a fan since I was a 13 yr old kid in the late 80s and I’m still a fan today. JEL can play any genre and make it his own-a true master. Love you, Jake! ❤️🔥
+vagelis Diamandis agreed! I can watch him play all day and night. Jake is amazing! I don't want to say he is better than Randy, but I'll say as equally great!
+EveryZEPalbum he's technically better than Randy, and zakk is the best. doesn't mean they don't each have different styles one may find more appealing. Mines sir zakk then jake.
My favorite guitar solo on RU-vid. Watched hundreds of times and it just gets better. Jake is a legend! That bass just chugging along, wow…..this video is perfection
