Cool opinion piece. Great series. I bought a copy of the first game on eBay, then played it on my PS3 for the modern hdmi/wireless experience. I quickly realized that the aged graphics and shitty cover art didn't make a bit of a difference. The game was incredible. I finished it, loved it. Like you, Suikoden III however was my first experience into the series. I first borrowed it from a friend in high-school, played about 30 hours of Geddoe chapters 1-3 and then left the game alone for over a decade. I finally started playing it again after 12+ years and getting towards the end of the game. I don't know if I'll ever played 4, 5 or 2, but for now my experience with the series has been incredible.

Everyone likes the good old RPGs in 2/2,5D style...so sad they don’t produce any good games anymore like suikoden 1+2, breath of fire 3, wild arms, grandia etc...those were the golden times
I enjoyed suikoden 2 didn't fall in love with it like everyone else because jrpgs are not really my thing but a few years back my mum had a stroke and to help her do something with her hands I gave her a psp with a ton of games and the one that really clicked with her was Suikoden
@@BrockShake well she played it to the end but she said it was quite weak and a bit repetitive not a bad game but definitely not anywhere near as good as 2
Suikoden 1 is one of my favourite games of all time - and the first game is still the best with one of the best OSTs in all of gaming. I also really love the original watercolour style of the character portraits. The 2nd game is great but I hate anime generization of the portraits, Nanami as a character, and all the bugs. I couldn't play Suikoden III it was so bad. I hate the graphics and the combat.
Suikoden V is my favorite overall. It's like the culmination of everything that made the series great, going out on the highest note they could. II and III are also right up there for me. The original kind of didn't age particularly well, but it's still pretty good. IV is my least favorite. Something just feels off about it. I still like it, just not as much as the others. Suikoden Tactics is another kind of oddball in the series. I like it, but it's sure not going to be everyone's cup of tea. Then there's Suikoden Tierkreis, which we don't talk about.
Nice video. I've only completed the first game and Tierkreis on DS. I actually really enjoyed Tierkreis despite its shortcomings. I'll have to give Suikoden II and III each a shot at some point.
They're all for sale right now on PS3. The "Big In Japan Sale" puts each of the first four games at about $2 a piece. I'd recommend grabbing them all. Well, maybe except IV. Haha. I still need to try the DS one.
@@BrockShake That's a great sale. Wish I could take advantage of it. Sadly, my PS3 died nearly a year ago and I was so put off by the price of a replacement at that point in time I never picked another one up. I might have to check prices again. Wish Sony would go the Microsoft route and start focusing on backwards compatibility. Microsoft is the only company doing it right at the moment. The new Netflix style VC for Switch might work if they expand it and port it in its entirety to each subsequent system.
That sucks. Was it the hard drive or the system that died? I think PS3s are relatively affordable right now. I know it was just a rumor that the PS5 would play everything ever made for any Playstation, but part of me hopes that Sony gives its fans that. They probably won't, because then then can't sell old PS2 games for $20.99 a piece, but I can dream. I like what Microsoft has done. I can play some of my old 360 games just by popping the disc in and I didn't have to spend a penny. I still don't have the Switch and I just read that Nintendo is no longer adhering to a release schedule (Wii VC all over again?), so I don't know a whole lot about that. Hope the service takes off.
@@BrockShake It appeared the be the graphics card. I was getting artifacting on the screen (red dots and lines). It would be really cool if the PS5 could play all previous disc based games but I'm doubtful. Unless it's powerful enough to do so through emulation, which can be quite tough. I know they had to include PS2 hardware in the launch PS3s to get them to play PS2 titles and it drove the cost up a ridiculous amount.
