i miss this game. 2 and 5 are my favourites, follow with 3,1, and 4. Overall i love the storyline. A lot of mystery still unanswered. Mystery of Jeane, Viki, Yuber, Pesmerga, Harmonia, the remain of 27 true runes, Hikusaak existence, Sindar clan, etc etc.

It's amazing that I can play this game upscaled on my phone now. This game is amazing, the writing is so good and feels organic. One of the few rpgs that has a mature story. The beginning is such a slog but once you can traverse the open world it really opens up, I love that you can change your formation too. It keeps all the things that made 2 the goat and actually improves on little things.

I love this game so much. I didn't think much when I bought it, it was on a shelf and I was actually waiting for another game to come via mail. So I got this to buy some time and man, it turned out to be one of the best RPGs I ever played. I have no experience with other suikodens (not yet). I actually like the slow start. As you said, setting everything up, a bit of politics, you get to know all the characters. You wonder what will happen to the sister, when the tournament is over. And then BAM! The attack on the castle. I think the attack was so brutal BECAUSE the start felt slow. You did not expect a turn this rapid at all. And that what makes a great story imo. I liked the music, loved the battle system. The characters are nice. The plot twists were (for me) unexpected. Just a great game.

I absolutely love this game. It is superb. The cut scenes, the characters, the plot, the music, the battle system and the intrigue. It has one of the most gut wrenching cut scenes ever IMO...Ferid & Arshtat OMG I still cry everytime. I think that is the mark of an excellent game, it takes you on a roller coaster ride of happiness, frustration and sadness. Ah I miss this series so damn much.

I remember enjoying a lot the formation system, 1 on 1 battles and the "war" encounters (not dissimilar to games like "total war", although of course at a smaller scale). It had a lot of variety and depth and it was very rewarding to organize the parties and armies. On the story side, and MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD, I love how the country is a Queendom, so they kidnap the main character's younger sister and usurp power through her, taking her throne - expelling him from the Queendom. Like you said, you are the underdog and create the "rebellion" which the usurpers quickly propaganda a lot out of painting you in a bad light. But when you keep winning the battles, you can totally tell your younger sister keeps demanding that the official armies "crush" the rebellion, so that you can win more and eventually reach the capital again - which is predictably what happens. Up to this day I haven't forgotten this game and wish they've continued the series. To give perspective, Persona 3 and Suikoden V both released in 2006. Imagine if both had had the same growth up until now - Persona 5 Royal is just so glorious.

Never did play this so was a fun video for the wife and I an my younger sister to all 3 watch. We loved 1 thru 3 best and found 4 meh as you mentioned so never played it. After watching this we will now go looking for it on PSN as tho we prefer the physical game 99% of the time not paying 100 to 200$ for this amazing series on PS1 discs. Terrific job as usual (with your reviews) going over the pro's and con's of the game.

Hell Fire RPGs The worst part is that most of the lakluster sales Suikoden V received (which led to the main series entering limbo) was undeserved. Suikoden V is basically a return toform, taking everything Suikoden 2 had and improving on it. A great political intrigue story like the old Suikoden games, Army Battles that finally felt like Army battles (the lite-RTS system was great),and unlikeSUikoden 2's hero the Prince of Falena didn'tfeel like a puppet ruler, rather he felt involved,he had a personal stake and wasn't out of the loop of battles the same way poor Riou was. And in terms of STretegists, Lucretia was basicallly a much more moral Shu (she didn't treat troops as mere tools, or use kids as tools*coughPilikacough*). Honestly,it hurts knowing the series ended on such a high note since there was more they could still do with the series.

Even though I didn't like 4 much I still bought 5 as soon as it came out. I just really liked the series and even the worst of 4 was better than some of the other jRPGs that came out at the time so it was decent as a game, just failed a bit as a Suikoden game. I'd still have bought it even if it didn't have Suikoden in the title (though it might have taken me a while to get around to it). Same can be said of Teirkries - It's a decent jRPG, it's just not a good Suikoden.

In March 2025 we'll have Suikoden 1 and 2 re-released. PLEASE pre-order or Wishlist to tell Konami that there are many, many fans who want to see the whole series remade for modern consoles! (Yes, even S4, which I really enjoy but which somehow hasn't had the same love as the other games.) Pre-order! Wishlist! And, maybe, we'll have S6 in the future. We can dream...

I don't really know what people are talking about when they say the opening is slow. The Lake West sequence gave me shivers initially and built intrigue. The political buildup is mesmerizing. What I can agree to is the combat and duels up to this point have been abysmally easy. But, the characters and plot have me interested in seeing what happens next. I feel like if the combat and things around the story built a bit more challenge (even though I know it may have been intentionally done this way as said by a previous comment poster in order to build up the tension that exists later) most people would enjoy it.

I think that this was very good review and by that, a good insight of what the game has to offer. This was my first Suikoden game which I played back when it first came out. So for me, it was a gateway to this series, which quickly became one of my favorite video game series, just because of how unique in certain aspects it is. While there are problems with Suikoden 5, I think that overall it is a good game and did justice to Suikoden franchise. Seeing how much budget and attention it gets, it did a good job transferring the look of the first two games into the 3D realm, expanding the character interactions with many cutscenes. If I had to pick one major issue that I have with this game, unlike other Suikoden games, is that it has way too many missable characters. I see that they tried to make the character recruitment more dynamic, but I do not think that it is a good idea making certain characters to only be recruitable if you manage to watch a certain scene at a certain time.

I enjoyed this game and have played through it two or three times, but I must say that it is a mixed bag. They did many things very well--such as the duels, the fighting formations, the runes, and the flow of the story. Much of what makes it seem like such a good game was that they simply restored the structure back to the way it was in Suikoden one and two. The voice acting and characters were of various quality. Lord Godwin was good and had an excellent voice actor. George and Sialeeds as well. Some were kinda weak and smarmy, especially Lyon or Miakis. The main character was weak as well. He lacked any semblance of charisma or presence (which in a way was understandable given the prince not being in line for the throne but which should then have played more of a factor when recruiting and leading), and his costume that he changes into was ridiculous (the first one he had was sort of interesting). The game was an improvement over Suikoden four, but it did enough things wrong or strangely that I think it could not generate enough momentum to generate a sixth entry.
@feiwong3634

As a hardcore Suiko fan, at first when this entry came out i was not very pleased by it, coming from the disaster of 4 i was not very hyped and i hated the long loading screens, but after a while i enjoyed the damn game and it is one of my favs. Really cool game that honors the first 3 games.

Why are people complaining about such things like "they copied many thigns from Suikoden 2, just in a bad way", instead of thinking like "a better copy, then a bad original thing"? I mean, appreciate that Sui2 has so much good influence on Suikoden V, which restorated the HONOR of the series after the 4th and for some 3rd game. Also I can see the lack of design at some points, like the towns, heck even some unite-attacks are... pretty not so spectaculuar as I thought they could have been. It really feels like at some point that the Suikoden creators don't know how to program/design an 3D RPG correctly. Cuz some of the flaws from Suikoden 3, liek the dungeon design, feels like it was made for an 2D game, and hasn't increased much until Suikoden 5.
@adammolloy87
@adammolloy87 8 лет назад
I though Suikoden 3 and Suikoden 5 were much better than 2 in terms of the characters. Suikoden 2 didn't have very good character development outside of a few of the central cast. 3 and 5 do a much better job of making use of the huge cast of characters.
@johnbrooke6867
@johnbrooke6867 4 года назад
Well...now it's 2020 and FF7 has finally come out with it's remake. It looks fantastic and of course makes me want all of the Suikodens to get remade in a somewhat of a similar fashion. I can't help but think it would be great if some billionaire bought all of Konami's intellectual video game properties so that development can begin again on these amazing games. A game reviewer not too long ago talked directly to the lead game writer and developer who mentioned they had a skeleton crew team working on these epic games. The time crunch made the original music composer essentially retire early from Konami. It would be amazing to get the old crew back together with some much needed new blood to re-invent the series. The original developer mentioned how unimpressed early polygon/3D advances were and I'd have to agree with him. The early "sprite" work and sort of hand drawn looking character overlay compositing holds up so much better than early polygon animations. Suikoden 1 and 2 almost look like they came AFTER the fifth installment rather than the opposite. Kind of mind blowing when you think of it. The main developer was right....the technology was over rated while the original sprite work and hand drawn art are still amazing to look at. I'm glad you mentioned the fighting formations because I LOVED changing my characters in and out of party and watching them snap into my chosen fighting formation. It WAS a drastic improvement upon previous fighting systems. In this new age of remaking everything.....perhaps....maybe even Suikoden will finally be REBORN.

Suikoden II was my favorite game ever. Suikoden I not far behind. I absolutely hated Suikoden III. I didn't hate suikoden IV but I do admit i was disappointed in the mechanics the plot held it together. I really, really liked 3. It was my second favorite in the series (3 and 5 change positions frequently). 4 isn't THAT bad. It kinda has that Suikoden feel to it, in an odd kind of way. I wouldn't judge you if you skipped 4 and started 5, though. However, recruiting Ted is cool! I also liked Suikoden Tactics, which is enhanced if you've played 4.

Suikoden 4 is a decent jRPG, it just missed the mark as part of the Suikoden series. I went in expecting one thing and got... a little less than what I was expecting, so I hated it for the longest time. I'm recently replaying it as an LP and while I can't say I love it in the way I love the rest of the series, I can say it's not as horrible when you know what to expect and don't hype yourself up for 'the newest Suikoden!' 3 was great imo.

I agree with the lifeless maps. That's sad, because the rest of Suikodens did great job creating an atmosphere. Too me the best looking Suikoden are II and III. This one has good graphics, but doesn't look alive. I'm not a graphics guy, (Of course I preffer them to be good) but I do love to feel in a live world, aside from the story and NPCs, which this game covers just great. Yet this doesn't mean I don't love this game and have my over 200 hours gameplay. And several other times that I played it, because I love it. But that turns me off of exploring sometimes. Dungeon maps looks cool, and some exterior too, like the castle, but inside feels kind of gloomy =p Yet this game has something that is rarely seen and was like "OMG I love you so much for doing this" and is the old school camera style. I LOVE it. And since the PS2 era, the RPG kind of forgot it. And to me, that's THE camera angle I want for very classic old school JRPG. and if it's not like that, must be some sort of fixed semi-following camera, like in SIII. Or Like FF games in the PSX era. I feel like replaying this game now. After I finish Breath of Fire III.

The painful thing is, it's only the maps that don't look alive. They really knocked it out of the park with the characters - how they move and interact is just really well done. Their eyes move in the direction they're looking/who's talking/what they're focussed on, they pull faces and change expression pretty often. I love how Prince reacts and moves - it gives him a ton of character. For a quick example, at one point Toma falls over and Prince leans down to check that he's okay, concerned about him getting hurt. It just adds such a nice touch to the characterisation. It's something I loved with 3, as well. You'd get Geddoe's crew giving each other side-eyes when someone says something, or Aila huffing in annoyance or Hugo pushing his mother away when she's trying to hug him. Just small things that help enhance their characters. Even nowdays games forget to do this - I've seen mocapped games forget to have these small interactions between other characters that happen irl all the time.

I Think that you overrate this game a great bit. I do like the plots and turns of the game. What I do not like is that the Goodwin and there plotting almost diminish into the end. They seems like complete fools and that takes away a lot of the credibility of the story. Another thing is that the soundtrack is quite poor for being a Suikoden game. You got the legendary Night of Moonlit theme making a strong comback here, but then what? There are endless of repetitive town themes and lack of good battle themes. There is a lack of fantasy and lore concepts. The whole headquarter reveal is classic Suikoden with it's flirts to the Sindar tecnology. Other then that there are no Neclords, no time travels. Sure there are a lot of classic figures like dwarfs but the beaver segment is just silly. The Ferid death is just another copy of the Odessa or Lady Annabelle death. There is a lack of interconection to the other games. There are some brief moments when they mention other areas of Suikoden. Mostly from the fourth game in form of a near visit to the islands nation. Maybe this has two do with that the game elapses some years before the first game. But it would have been nice with more links other then a usual lost Viki. A lack of good antagonists. Sure there is the godwin but then what? The fool Barrows? Not quite........ The loading times makes you tired. The lack of 3D seing in the third and fourth games. I liked those perspectives better then the ones in this game. Uninspiring dungeons and town areas. Sure, there are some weird looking towns in the game but nothing makes you want to stay. And where is the ninja area or the secret village? The main protagonist. nothing against homosexuals. But the prince looks like a fucking phag........ Suikoden 5 does many thing good but nothing really great. For me the game is a 80 of 100. From time to time I even like the fourth game better cause it's a lot more approachable and easier game to pick up and play. Suikoden 5 is the most slow paced game in the whole series which make it a game that can't be recomended to everybody.

+Chris White Thanks for the comments! I really enjoy reading detailed messages from fellow RPG fans. I have more of a soft spot for Suikoden than I do any other series to date (FF being a close second). I can relate so many times in my life to moments when I was playing this series, and this nostalgia no doubt has a lot to do with my high ratings. I was even running a highly successful Suikoden roleplay site for about 4 years back in the day. I think I loved Suikoden 5 so much because it did have a lot of Suikoden 2 plot elements, just not done quite as well. The whole Georg thing was a highlight for me. I don't criticize the plot as much as you do, apart from the sllloooowww start, that does put quote a few people off. As for the protagonist, I think that's a staple of the Suikoden series..... someone we don't care about. Honestly, every single RPG out there with a main character who doesn't talk, I'll have a problem with it, but the characters surrounding the silent protagonist in Suikoden games are just so strong that this issue takes a back seat in my mind. For me: S2 > S3> S5 > S1 > S4 You?
@CaptainMauser
@CaptainMauser 8 лет назад
Ahh that explains your dedication and favourism. Haha, if you are into silent protagonists then you should try Shining Force 2. Hmm, a tough question. Suikoden 2, then the first...It's a pretty even race between 3 to 5. It has a lot to do which mood you are when playing. I think the third game is vastly overrated but it has some great highlighting moment of the series.

hahhahaha i enjoyed reading the comments, I played s1 s2 and s4.... s4 killed my heart for any Suikoden game made. Travelling systems were hard to navigate with the boat, it was hit and miss with the 4 characters, the music sucked, 3d worlds all seemed empty and didnt have as much variation and life as s2 did. Characters came back but didnt give me enough build on it to make it worth my time and effort. To be honest i don't mind if they go back to 2d mode as long as they make it fun and have good story with loads of mini games and stuff like s2 had. I swear i went for 100 hours at least with s2. Im so glade to hear so many passionate comments. But sadly game makers don't really listen and try to reinvent the wheel all the time.,

One of my biggest gripes with this game is how zoomed out you are in towns and even battles. Always looking at stick figures during story time doesn't make me feel invested. They also kept the pathetic style of rune attacks from 4. What I mean is that they feel like they have no depth of power. In 1, 2, and even 3 we had big magic attacks that filled the screen and felt like it expanded the battlefield to show the destruction! In 4 and 5 there are weak looking little spells that don't make my jaw drop at the awesomeness. It makes me not want to use magic at all. Just let Richard destroy everything alone.

I remember how Suikoden 5 trolls seasoned players by having some NPCs dress with noticeable designs goading you into thinking they're recruitable. The little girl with the big red ribbon still haunts me. Then you realize the recruit is a lot harder in this game, so you start over forever cursing your seasoned player mindset. I couldn't recruit Raven without a guide, and I was constantly looking for Taki in this game, lol.

There won't be a revival Konami cancelled the project in 2015. On profiles you can see Sony Interactive Entertainment JAPAN Studio has snatched up Norikazu Miura who composed Suikoden V, Suikoden Tactics and a few tracks for Suikoden Tierkreis. He is not the only one. A couple of designers, artists and programmers who worked on Suikoden V, Tactics and Tierkreis joined JAPAN Studio in 2015 as well. I don't know what the studio is up to but it's pretty interesting. Konami is dead.

See, I just don't understand how EVERYONE seems to dislike the first part of this game. For me, that first part up til the big shocker moment was some of the most fun I have had in any RPG ever, and that's saying a lot. But as soon as that shocker moment happened and the "game" actually started and became open world, I found myself instantly bored to death and actually had to quit playing because it instantly got so slow and boring. Before that, I thought the story was absolutely enthralling, and packed with action and excitement at every moment. I wished so badly that the entire game had stayed on its on rails type gameplay like it did up to that point where it changed. I just don't understand how I am the only one who feels this way... why is this??

For me, I think SV is a great JRPG, but I'll have to make it my least favorite Suikoden of the series. My biggest issues with the game were the character designs, skill system, difficulty, and the "best" ending. I don't wanna give anything away to those who haven't played it, but I wanted a little bit more "bitter" to balance the "sweet", you know? The problem with IV was their production schedule, more than anything else; If you you look at the release dates for IV and V, they were a little more than a year apart. I guess this was close to the transitional period between the PS2 and PS3, and it may have lead to Suikoden IV not being baked long enough in the oven, so to speak.
@HellFireRPGs
@HellFireRPGs 9 лет назад
Roshambeaux89 Interesting. Seems quite rare to find people ranking S5 so low. My housemate is playing SV too, and he mentioned the character designs lacking, and how a lot of the characters looked like regular towns people a lot of the time. I also remember getting through S5 the first time without breaking a sweat due to putting the wall rune, firefly rune, and plenty of defense on a single character. I'm trying to stick to the traditional 3x2 formation this time around without using that strategy.
@Roshambeaux89
@Roshambeaux89 9 лет назад
Hell Fire RPGs All of my aforementioned complaints are really just minor gripes. I tell people who disliked 3 and loved 4 that, just to rile them up. I don't know how much of the staff worked for IV and V, but you could clearly see the differences aesthetically and to a lesser extent, philosophically. Also, Junko, who was the lead person for IV, used her own money to fund the development in that game, which allowed the series to go on. I thought it was worth noting that, and deserved some credit.
@HellFireRPGs

Roshambeaux89 I think Suikoden IV is still a good RPG, but a disappointment compared to the other 4 in the series. A shame about the development issues because it had some really strong aspects. I've actually only played it the once, so I think it may be time to give it another shot :)

I think it was close to being the best in the series...the story was brilliant and unbelievably tight...it was missing something just to kick it on and pit it passed suikoden 2 and for me...that was the lack of a great villain. The godwins were ok in regards to there scheming to take over the country...but once you get Lucretia...she knows everything....you don't feel like your in any danger of losing the war...and I get that your always going to win but there are moments in all the previous titles where you feel under the cosh..you don't have that in this. Because Lucretia is all knowing and the godwins lack a strategist on her level ..it just feels easy. Also they seemed to try hard to copy suikoden 2 on ways..not a bad thing....but childerichs not luca

Suikoden 2 and Suikoden 5 are my favorite. I like all of them, but as time has passed I have changed my mind about them. Suikoden I- Nowadays it bores me a little, and I think it didn't age very well. Today is my least favorite. Suikoden 3- I like it, but I find it way too long and not interesting enough for its length. Also nowadays I get annoyed by the fact that a lot of scenes are repeated though different chapters. Luc chapter was a total disappointment for me, I expected more. Suikoden 4- Initially, it was my least favorite, nowadays the more I play it the more I like it. When I was younger I would say: II-V-III-IV-I Nowadays: II-V-IV-III-I.

It's a mixed bag. It's a pretty good jRPG in it's own right, but as a Suikoden game it kinda fails. Especially as it isn't set in the same world (that the rest of the main games are set in) and doesn't have return characters. Part of the charm of the main series is that you see characters you know from the other games, or their relatives. You hear about places and people and runes and the like before visiting them. There's this feeling of continuation. For example, the first three games are set in countries near each other, within a timeline of about 25 years. Thus you have people from the first game turn up in the second and third. Places you heard about in the second game turn up in the third game. Fourth and fifth games also do this, even though they're set, time-wise, before the first game - people you meet in the first game are referenced in the fifth. That kind of thing builds a big image of the world itself and places existing outside of the borders of the game you're playing through. You hear about the Grasslands and then in a later game actually get to go there. You learn about mermaids and then meet them later on in the series. You learn about a character who did x thing and then meet them or their kids in another game. The series weaves stories together. Teirkries was missing that, which means it doesn't count as part of the main series. That said, it was still a pretty good game... bar the voices. XD

The story is also dreadfully a copy of Suikoden 2 if you look hard enough. A Nanami character, the events of Two River recreated in Lordlake, rescuing Lymsleia in a three part battle ala Luca Blight and the f*cking Do Re Mi elves. Basically copied 2's progression and altered a few bits.
@Posirep
@Posirep 8 лет назад
+ed cap Don't forget, Childerich is a piss poor clone of Luca Blight. He even screams "DIE PIGS" at one point in the game. I think youre confusing Lordlake for Lelcar. That was the 3 district town...and I enjoyed that more than I enjoyed chasing Chaco all over Two River. The Godwins were interesting characters tho. I have also said they lifted shit straight from Suikoden 2 but it works. It's not as good as Suikoden 2 but it's still a great RPG. Plus it has my favorite character from any game, ever....Miakis.
@edcap8029
@edcap8029 8 лет назад
+InvisibleTeeth I guess they did use the story of Suikoden 2 to a much better effect, but that only means Suikoden 2 could've even been a lot better if it was released in the PS2..with Luca Blight ordering that woman to act like a pig in glorious 3d.... I never liked the Godwins. In all honestly, the story builds them up as a cunning force, but they don't really do much. Didn't do a lot of evil things to make us hate them, and didn't do anything that made them well rounded. Joey poisoned himself to kill the king, why didn't they copy that in S5? lol. but that's just my opinion. S2 forever!!! XD
@Posirep
@Posirep 8 лет назад
I just thought it was funny that even Marscal thought Gizel was a moron...yet did absolutely nothing about it...and then is all like "I've done nothing all game while my son schemed shit..but Imma go be a moth now"...he basically Barbarossa'd his way into the story. Didn't do shit all game but then decided to be the final boss. Also, they always tried to copy Jowy in Suikoden 4. They tried to build Snowe into a Jowy like character but kind of failed. I liked Snowe's story arc tho...but that was probably cuz he was the only character in that game with a personality at all.
@edcap8029
@edcap8029 8 лет назад
+InvisibleTeeth Lol, Snowe? Jowy?! Suikoden 4 sucked on a whole new level then. I wanted to love 4, but if only they put more land dungeons instead of boring sea travels. There's a lot of thnigs s4 screwed up. My biggest gripe is the lack of involvement from the Scarlet Moon Empire. As a fanboy, I kinda wished atleast Windy made an appearance and had a dialogue with Ted or Jeanne. Talking about this series is making me want to play again..then get all depressed suikoden 6 will never come.

I actually got excited when I first saw the art before the game was released because I thought we were getting our first female main character (Chris had to share the spotlight so while I love her to bits, she doesn't really count). Frankly, though, I love Frey and his design. He looks like his mother which makes sense since, you know, she's his mother. Besides, they took our bishies in 4 and gave us Waddlebutt Lazlo to look at for the game instead (a very piss-poor replacement) so they goddamn better have made up for it in 5... which they did. I'm glad they went the way they did with the story. Your idea is pretty... uh... yeah, no thanks. No thanks at all. One of the things I love about the Suikoden series was that women were considered just as strong as men, so having a Queendom be treated as a normal, decent thing and not thrown to the dogs by making everything about 'the man' was really cool. I'm super glad it didn't go into a struggle over power in that aspect (the throne was always out of Prince's grasp) and that they didn't go the trope "women devouring men so men have to fight back" bullshit routine. Media has that coming out it's ass already.
