I saw this when I was in high school because I recognised Andrew McCarthy & James Spader from all the John Hughes movies. But I had never seen RDJ, he was amazing in it.
M t v boombox radio's, cassette tapes checkered vans rubik's cubes, parachute pants, Night clubs, exciting films, and the best music ever made. I mean, get this back to the future. Didn't just show part one. It ended with the showing of part 2. It kept you prepared. Roads where we're going, we don't need roads. The whole delorean flips a u turn and flies up right over the camera.
Newman's soundtracks have a way of arousing your, heart, brain, inner being. Makes me think of soulful moments of life that nothing else has and gives me inner peace. Thank you Thomas Newman.
What a movie this was, I was in love with Jami Gertz, and all the cast is great, I prefer Robert Downet Junior in drama roles, and of course James Spader!!
As a Gen Xer, I saw this film when it was released. Though far from a rich kid myself, I immediately connected with it. 35 years later, the sound of deep loss and regret represented in the film and score now inextricably mixes with my own personal experiences of loss I've experienced since...lost loved ones, and lost youth. This music now cuts right through me, and I can't listen to it without my face melting off. Whenever I do watch the film now, I have to remind myself its a work of fiction.
Very powerful movie. I grew up in the 80s. This is one of the best movies from that era. The music is haunting but so good. I miss those days. Lots of good movies and great music.

Road to Perdition, Meet Joe Black, American Beauty, etc... I just recently found this score and the love theme from Jumpin Jack Flash. This is truly another level, couldn't agree with you more that he 'outdid' himself
Newman composed the score while thinking of a loved one who was struggling with drug addiction.. you can hear the emotion Newman must have felt.. throughout the entire score.. hauntingly beautiful.. 😢
Sublime...somber...you can feel the mirth and subtle joy of these youths. It’s as if they revel in Julians celebrity and visible destruction with an unflinching acceptance...holding his hand all the way to the grave...this film is not just about drugs, narcissism or adolescent conduct disorder...it’s about friendship and unconditional love...tragic at times...and unalterable. A morbid, voyeuristic exploration into despair
@@faniymx Hence the titel, Less Than Zero. because by the end they ruin their prospects, good looks and money. And where any other person might have atleast built a moral compass or strong character, the characters in this story failed to do that. Less Than Zero. Because a guy with no money in the bank still has his moral compass. The film is very weird becomes it gives the characters this moral compass and in doing so subverts the entire point of the novel.
@Jon Duncan - Very well said sir ... I saw this in the theatre and it has always been a favorite of mine, despite the sad reality of the story, it definitely holds your attention!😽
I've tried finding this score so many times. You have no idea how happy I am to have found this. Thank you! I was introduced to this movie during my "party days" and I used to watch it over and over. It was so far ahead of its time. Just the cinematography alone is stunning and beautiful. I will be enjoying this from the grown up version of myself, who enjoys staying in with a good book on the weekends.
I have seen this movie a 1000+times know it word for word. When I first heard the name Julian,I said If I ever have a son, that's his name. Yes my son is named Julian. This is on my top 10 favorite movies of all time. Way ahead of its time!!!
I'm now 53 and was just a teenager when this was released and when those notes hit, not only did it take me back, but I suddenly realized there has never been another score, song ....nothing that compares to those melancholic chords.
This song makes me think of my life and the people who effected my life and betrayed me and used my family and myself. I managed to get thru alot and I went thru hell and back in hell and thank god I never did drugs. I chose the gym and church and that's how I get by. I faced my demons and people and I paid my dues. This movie The title speaks for itself Less Than Zero. They didn't have anything. The 80s was a great time for music movies and cartoons and people were alive back then and happier unlike today***
" Just make an EFFORT Julian!!!-Rip.....I cried everytime at the end when Julian died in the back end of the car...sad and real, but one of the best movies ever made with a allstar cast.
This soundtrack has just been released on lalaland records. It is slightly different from the versions floating around on you tube. Limited release 1500 CDs. Never released before now,it is excellent. not to be confused with the various artists release, which is dreadful.
Don't ask me why. Because I really have no succinct explanation for what I'm about to say. It's just a feeling I have had for years. I've always viewed this movie as the closing chapter of a book with three of them. Even though the other two were made by a separate filmmaker John Hughes. Chapter 1: Sixteen Candles. Showing the lighter, humorous side of life as a teenager. Chapter 2: The Breakfast Club. Showing high school age kids as they really are. Complex characters, no matter how different they are. Chapter 3: Less Than Zero. Follows the progression of this age group beyond high school and allowing the viewer to appreciate the fact that darkness can enter life, no matter what your age. Again, just a feeling I've always had. Peace. p.s. Thomas Newman is a musical genius. Nuf said.
John Hughes was a genius. He's one of the reasons the '80s were so magical. This coming from a childhood perspective of course. He was a big part of it.
There is a limited edition release of 1500 units through La La Land records still available.. audio CD that is selling for ridiculous prices on other platforms.. I preordered it and have several copies for collection.. it’s amazing.. still
The moment during the detox scene, Julian slips Clays mother’s ring he had stolen onto Clays finger. Heart breaking 💔 addiction changes good people and destroys family and friendship

I was crushing hard on Jami Gertz as a little bit younger guy after seeing this in an actual movie theatre. This movie is one of reasons I went to live and work in California. Underrated movie.....needs more love....
