You’re quite right. This is keyboard music through and through, quite idiomatic. I especially loved the gavotte, so expressive.

I agree the gavotte is the jewel in the crown of this suite.

I've thought for decades that the Sarabande from BWV 995 is my favourite movement of all Bach's work. It's such a perfect and simple journey through dissonance and resolution, and yet the sparseness of it forces the brain to fill in the chords - even when played on a monophonic instrument. Each section of melody, each bar, is a puzzle solved by the bass note arriving. I was surprised by your departure from the norm, John, at 26:32, and I wonder what led to that decision, what kind of precedent there is for such a dramatic ornament, if that's how you'd describe it. All beautifully played, as usual. You've inspired me to put this on my piano todo list. Re lute, harpsichord, lute-harpsichord, etc., Bach's music seems endlessly translatable to most other instruments with some accommodation. The cello (or would that be da gamba?) suites are wonderful on guitar or piano. I was thinking how important ornaments are for harpsichord, since its sustain is so short, and whether trills would have become so common in Baroque and classical music if the piano had been invented earlier. In order to hold a note, you've little choice but to play it repeatedly, which would be fairly dull and technically troublesome, or waggle back and forth with its neighbour. Congrats on putting this all together again for a second time, and thanks.

First of all, I apologize for the very late response. And I'm very happy you liked the video! Regarding the embellishment I added, this was a means of heightening the expression of that passage. In terms of whether this is an appropriate thing to do, here we get more into the area of personal preference, so I would never claim that what I did is necessarily appropriate. However, adding dramatic embellishments was part of the Baroque Style, and we have many examples of Bach himself adding a variety of colorful and imaginative ornaments in his music: consider, for instance, the vast difference between the "plain" and the "ornamented" versions of the sarabandes in the second and third English Suites; or, as I have argued in another video, the Sarabande of the sixth Partita, which is already heavily ornamented. Another aspect to consider is that when it comes to ornamentation and embellishing, many modern performers tend to treat Bach in a different way compared to other Baroque composers. What I mean by this is that, while performers will freely add ornaments to the music of other composers, it is fairly common not to be so "creative" with Bach. I think this can be traced back to an older 20th century aesthetic that advocated playing only what is on the page. This means that we, and I include myself here, are used to hearing performances that don't depart too much from the written score, so that when a performance does deviate it is going to stand out in relation to what we are used to. But I do not see any reason why we should treat Bach differently to other Baroque composers. Of course this does not mean what I did was successful -- only the listeners can decide that! But I do wish more performers would experiment more with adding embellishments to Bach's music, just like they do with the music of other composers.

Thanks for the video. It's very informative! I'm working on this suite at the moment and liked your performance, very rich sound and effective ornamentations. As a plucker, I love hearing these works played on the good old keys! I would also say Bach intended the work to be played on lute, but was not proficient on the lute himself. It is common for composers to write music that has to be modified when writing for the lute or the guitar when they don't play themselves. Even composers as brilliant as Benjamin Britten have made mistakes when writing music for guitar/lute.

@@zepewto901 It's definitely a fascinating instrument. I got to play one a few years ago, and it was a wonderful experience. Incidentally, the score I used is the Neue Bach Ausgabe edition. I haven't checked, but I imagine imslp has the older Bach Gesellschaft Ausgabe edition from the 19th century, which should be good as well.

wao fascinating topic; i will listen to it again tommorow and post comment more complet. Without listening, I can agree, but anyway, it's a proof that his music has been transcribed very soon for other instrument; and the lute, for any suite (from 995 to 1011) suite perfectly this music, it's a wonderful instrument which surely inspired keyboard composers at some moments! Thank you by advance

Yes, the lute definitely suits this music, and it certainly inspired Bach. Perhaps, after all, the lute harpsichord may have been invented because keyboard players were so fascinated by the sound of the lute and were trying to approximate it on a keyboard instrument. So any piece conceived for lute harpsichord works perfectly on the lute.

Based on the resonance of my instrument, and especially considering the bass notes, I felt this was "tres viste" enough :) Now, if I had a lute-harpsichord, I can imagine playing it faster.

Thank you for your introduction and playing-beautiful work. I enjoyed the comment and discussion of the Sarabande regrading ornaments. I appreciate your idea that Bach is held apart in terms of improvisation. David Russell discussed his recent guitar performance of BWV995 with David Tannenbaum-the subject of the austerity of the Sarabande is explored: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yr_sGrqhdBg.htmlsi=p8PlZpuRnbiJzv_B
