This is a great summary of the Arizona sexual abuse case involving The Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day, Saints leadership, otherwise known as Mormons. They had the legal option of reporting this abuse to the authorities to stop it. But instead it was not reported and the abuse continued for 7+ years including abuse of the 6 week old sister.

Wow..im appalled that any father wouldnt want to have this issue reported immediately.. it went on for a year or more.. dont make excuses for these men who ring lawyers and not police..its disgusting and this is one of many cases that they covered up..the church has it set up this way.we all have a moral duty to stop abuse..imagine leaving these children in this mess.the mother was useless but putting it all on her shows how we will defend this neglect by members and it has to stop...

As a Bishop my response was to call the police and then seek legal advice on how to contain the perpetrator. Unfortunately by the time I got involved there wasn't much I could do, except prevent him from getting near anyone else. But I don't live in the USA. So are you blaming the Bishop for following the legal advice? How much did the Bishop know? I have also heard that the mother was covering up and denying a lot of what was going on, even to the Bishop. She could have informed the police at any time, but continued to play happy families. I am sure she was advised to, as the bishop thought he couldn't and the Bishop would have supported getting them away from him and there would have been no second child or rape Another time I helped a family get evidence. At first I installed the software, but was told I couldnt do that, so I deleted it, but there was nothing wrong with the woman installing it, that I could help doing. I had to stay on the right side of the law too. Stop blaming the poor Bishops who are placed in these situations, who are following the legal advice they are given. What about the other organisations, friends, family, neighbours, school, work? The church is always an easy target. Then there was the case of the wife suing the church because a bishop did report her husband. So it is a case of you are dammed if you do, or if you don't. I would never want to be a bishop again. I personally would contact the police in every case and I wouldn't care if I was released or not, but its not easy on a lot of bishops who don't have my background in social work and education. There are more cases of Bishops doing the right thing than not, you don't get to hear of them because they are interruptions, preventions and rescues. It is so easy to be a critic, but the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints has some of the best protection procedures in any Christian or religious organisation.

The statute literally DOES NOT permit bishops to report the abuse. Had he done so, any prosecution would have been dismissed.

Is this true? Do you know where I can learn more? I’m assuming these statutes are available somewhere online? (I’m not a lawyer so…am a bit out of my depth)

Wrong. The statute permits him to stay silent. It does NOT prohibit a good man from speaking out. He took advice from the church lawyers and chose the coward’s path of obedience to the made up authority of the church. He ALWAYS had the right to say or do something. The law protects the church from being accountable for his silence. It does NOT force his silence.
