On this Summer Edition of MBB, Mayim and Jonathan are joined by Mayim’s very own vocal cord surgery doctors, ENT + Anesthesiologist practitioners Doctors Shawn Nasseri and Bita Nasseri! They discuss ways they’re able to manage the mental health of their patients, how stress levels and sleep cycles can impact overall health and their holistic approach to treating patients and in their own lifestyles. The Drs. Nasseri explain the importance of analyzing your environment and getting to the root causes of symptoms rather than quelling them with medication. They open up about the experience of taking on all of a patient’s anxieties, the physical manifestations of psychological causes, and Eastern vs Western approaches to medicine. Mayim breaks down the science behind recurring nightmares in another installment of Ask Mayim Anything.

As a proud wife, mom & mom-in-law of three Dr. & Dr. Nasseri alike docs/surgeons, all MD out there may be like them & put the patient (never a customer) holistically first. There’s an old say in Spanish (hard to properly be translated well here) that says “Un Doctor tiene dos profesiones: médico y cura” playing with the two meanings of “cura” (“he that heals” & “priest” or “soul healer” understood as the one who brings comfort to the soul) it could be translated as “A good MD has two proffessions, physician and soul’s healer”. Other thing: As a motorcycle biker myself, I used to got sinusitis & be on antibiotics. From the moment I left diary from veggie “milk”, sinusitis dissapeared forever! Great episode, as usual! Thank you MB & JC! 💜🫂

Another great episode! Mayim is correct in saying most doctors are treating way below what is acceptable. It’s as if they all hate their jobs, but stay in it for the money. I’m literally living this reality with PCP, ENT, Pulmonology, Rheumatology! I so wish Dr. Nassari was in my area so I could see him!!

Regarding these good docs, as a non-smoker patient of vocal chords issues myself (I undergo a surgery of a bening tumor there that didn’t let me speak in 2000) I know how handicapted you feel & how this stressed my yet stressed life/mind. But my body didn’t learnt the lesson then. Anxiety, bad sleeping, workaholic stressed life went on, till my body sent me the worst alarm ever: A CANCER. There and then I learnt the mind/body connection..😞. Btw, apart from things of my yet recovered cancer, I still keep the old notebook used to communicate myself during my long vocal chords rest. As a reminder.🤞🏾

This was really a fascinating interview. I LOVE that both doctors view each person holistically & are in favor of using both traditional AND Western medicine as the specific need applies. What a wonderful duo from whom to learn, & more proof that there are so many things we CAN do for our bodies & environments that can up our wellness game without the use of “just take a pill for that”. Thank you for another outstanding episode!!

You're so welcome, Dr. Bialik! I really enjoy seeing each new episode come out. 🙂 Just a thought - do you have any plans to cover the benefits of float therapy (old-school sensory deprivation chambers but have been popping up commercially everywhere over the past ~decade)? I first read about them in Dean Koontz's Door to December when I was a teenager & started floating at my hypnotist's office in my late 20s (~20 years ago), but hadn't done it in years until I used some gift cards I got for Christmas & now have a membership to a float facility. I don't believe you've explored this topic on an aired episode yet, but I would be really curious to see you do so. I've been floating several times a week for almost a month now - between 1 - 2.5 hrs at at time - & have seen some pretty drastic improvement in stress relief, problem-solving, creativity, etc. I'd be very interested in an episode on this topic & would love to hear about any experiences you &/or Jonathan have had on it. The science is fascinating, & my own anecdotal results have been worth every penny. If I didn't lease my home & had the funds, I'd have a tank installed at home for personal use!

Delighted to hear that you're going to get James Nestor on. A deep dive into breathing would be awesome. I've just read Nestor's book "Breath" and can't recommend it highly enough. Thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated the balance of holistic and western approach the Doctors Nasseri have, wish this could be more wide spread. Thanks again for another highly educational, humerous and sincere episode, I love it when a Tuesday rolls around! ❤

I enjoyed this one! Having had an ND who came from a line of traditional healers in Iran, I can vouch for what they say. I eschew pharmaceuticals, whenever I can, and a rent experience with chronic pain reminded me of the limits of modern “western medicine” (I call it the industrialized system) and of holistic practitioners. Because of my $ situation, I’ve had to resort to a sports Med doctor who listens to me part of the time and an OD who pretends to listen but ignores my insights into my own body. Both prescribed meds that were counterintuitive to other issues I was having. (How is it that I’ve ended up with the “rare” side effects that I had to verify on Internet databases?) I’ve consulted with an acupuncturist clinic with specialties that seem to fit my needs, but I was cut off as soon as I mentioned I could only go every other week (instead of the usual routine of weekly, 10-12 sessions). So, it looks like I’ll be doing daily guided meditation and breathing, along with energy work and prayer, on myself. It’s actually had a good effect, but given that I was once a meditation and rhythmic breathing instructor in a dojo, I wouldn’t recommend it for everyone. P.S. I’ve identified some of the emotional energy (aka old issues) that were stored in my body, and that energy has been moving much better since I started doing qigong again!

On the topic of health issues being solved from the perspective of diet, have you, Mayim, considered that being vegan is the source of your health issues, anxiety, and depression? The Peterson's are controversial, but their health story is absolutely amazing and inspiring. I'm super skeptical of the anecdotal testimonies from people that do a carnivore focused elimination diet, BUT the visible and tangible results are undeniable. The purple look so happy and healthy without seemingly like they're exaggerating. I've looked, and I've never seen such a transformation from a plant-based advocate.

To start off I want to say that I really like be like what you're doing with this Podcast. I am 58 years old 12 years Sober.Back in 2003 a doctor told me that I had low blood sugar. I stopped eating carbs completely for over 6 months. I got down to an unhealthy weight of 120 pounds. I started having really bad anxiety attacks and started using xanax. That was my 1st true addiction. In 2005 after hurricane Wilma and losing everything I had, I started using wellbutrin and other drugs for depression.I feel that my brain is really screwed up from the up from the no carbs for 6 months back in 2003. Currently I am microdosing on magic mushrooms. And before that I did 6 treatments of ketamine. Any suggestions, do you agree that my brain could be screwed up from the no carbs for 6 months?

Difficult to find good doctors these days. Many of them are in it for material reasons, and some of them are not well-educated. Drs. Nasseri are the real deal. I think good professionals exist in any field but you really need to look for them. We can no longer assume that a degree = excellence. Thank you.

Well dear friends, thanks so much, ı don't think my mental state is healthy if ı've to admit, obvioulsy ı'm nuts, a serious asscoholic and also just as you ı'm having OCD problem sometimes even heavily, ı can't sleep too much either it's a not a full insomnia situtation but annoying anyways,ı'm wakin' up so early mostly, when ı get some melatonin pills in order to stimulate my melatonin hormon it's a bit better in this case but not much, if ı get psychosomathic pills it's better but that causes obesity and gaining weight sort of problems this time time so ı've been forced to quit because ı've another cardiovascular problem and ı've to be careful, my medication is based on classic lustral pills but it's never enough. Well Jonothan is right most of the people actually are having nevrotic disorders in our society and less people are having serious psyhotic (with Freuadian terms) issues such as schizophrenia for instance . I coulnd't figure a proper quick way in order to bind my spinal cord with my pineal gland so far and trying to medidate is a bit annoying for me, ı'm a sag sign and we sag people get bored ao quickly while trying to focus on something lol, peace & love.

When she said “sometimes her job is a thankless job” should not even be said from her mouth a doctor. In my opinion there are other jobs out there that are more known as a thankless job. This comment quite offended me.
