Jay, Thank you and great job presenting this new exciting SunSun filter! I have a few things to add. 1) You did not mention the redesign on the UV Sterilizer system, which has been removed from lid where it was at risk for damage on previous models. The relocation of the UV lamp will also make it possible to service lamp without opening the canister. I do use UVL's (2-HW-703B) on my 150 Discus bioscape and really like that you can set "on" time as well on this and the HW-3000 model too. 2) The no kink hoses are slick, but have less value to anyone running anythng in-line (i.e. Pre-filters, CO2 Reactor, In-line heaters, or a Media tower). It would be nice to see a no kink hose designed with intergrated smooth cut locations that would allow you to shorten a hose to a specific length, add an accessory, but not loose the connecting ends that offer leak free operation. 3) The quick-drain feature will make regular canister service a breeze and will allow you run a dedicated hose to your drain location. It’s like an FX-6 and a 704-B has a baby. I like how eliminating the outside FX sponges dramatically increases basket size. 40w tells me the put an efficient motor in there. Time will tell. Thx J!

Its a dc pump thats why. That is also how you can control and adjust its flow with that controller. It honestly baffles my mind why canister filters dont come with dc pumps, theyre just a better choice all around for efficiency and for the versatility of controlling the flow, instead of putting valves to restrict the water flow, you can just turn down or up the power of the motor.

dun madun because DC pumps are more expensive. As they are becoming more and more popular their prices are coming down. Same as the LED light globes are getting cheaper as they are becoming more popular.

My 3 FX5/FX6 have run non stop for 7 years with zero issues. RELIABILITY! I will buy another FX6 today. One is on sale for 269.

As a reefer i also can say Sunsun is good stuff for the price point . Ive got other aquarist into their products who normally wouldnt be able to afford expensive gear . Sun sun has been good to me

I like that there is no motor hanging off the side of it like the fx6 but how easy is it to get to the impeller to clean that out when a snail gets jammed in there.

totally agree i love their LED lights i use quite a bit of them in my fish room and grow some really rare and demanding plants under them! they are so underrated! looking forward to seeing this filter in action! cheers

I like that they don't waste space with all the foam around the trays like Fluval does. Space to hold bio media is the key with these cans. I don't like that ring to hold the lid on. that looks like it will break easily.

I literally just did a video on why I didn’t buy an FX6 and one of the main reasons was the hoses. I have two 702b’s with the uv light. It comes in handy when there’s an algae bloom, adding or sick fish. I also turn the up light on every Thursday and then turn it off when i do a water change on Sunday.

Thanks for this Jay. First thought is that the product any top class company produces, is only as good as the competition, so the fact that SunSun has upped it's game is healthy and welcome. I've noticed FX filter prices for the 4 and 6 have come down in many places, I buy used so it isn't something I watch constantly. But the change in SunSun just over even the last two or three years, has been huge. Before when I got back into the hobby, we didn't have a contact for SunSun, at least not a reliable one. Now I can go on the Canadian website and but items at a far better price than I could before. I try to stay away from sumps, but only because my fishroom is subterranean and a pain to deal with humidity and I don't want a dehumidifier running all day. I have some FX5's because they are cheap to buy right now, but I am going to need a new cannister for my 150 so I will probably go with SunSun. My LFS has media with bacteria in big containers, so I can jump start the thing. Anyway I digress, thanks again Jay.

Fun video, thank you. I may need a couple of these soon, hmmm. I have a 265 gal sunsun on a 55gal, and it has served well, but I'm doing a couple 75s in the next few weeks, and I may want to step up the game on those. Plus if I grow to larger tanks, these could grow with.. Appreciate the video, and your enthusiasm. Your quick wit and ad libbing is much appreciated and down right entertaining. Its good untoll you need to get new seals on a constant basis. Not a problem with the FX6

Still love my FX6 but this sure looks good!! Not sure about the hoses. I prefer to "cut to fit" the hoses but everything else looks awesome. Might try one soon on a growout tank. Really want to see a follow up video once you it have loaded with media so we see the flow rate. Thanks Jay!

For all things you buy now days people need to handle them very carefully. craftsmanship is out the window,you can tell us in a few month how your SUNSUN HW 500 is doing his job for the price which is good for me.

I have watched the video twice now and trying to understand how it works. Both tubes that connect with the lid both go to the bottom of canister. So if the intake takes it to the bottom of the canister, and the exit is also from the bottom - how does the water flow through the media? In the FX6, it intakes to the bottom, flows up on the outside portions of each basket through the pads then flow internally from top to bottom - where pump pushes it out. How does it work here?

I've been waiting for this video. I have the 704b and the hw-3000. Great filters. Bought them because of you. Only complaints I have is with the 704b nothing, hw-3000 intake is short even fully extended. I like my intakes at the bottom of my tanks. Not super ideal for deep dimensions. Other than that, it would be nice for a larger intake strainer like the ones on the fx series. Also wasn't a huge fan of how the output clips together. Would prefer a one piece design like the fx series. Like you said it's great stuff cheap

So I've had one of these since the week it came out. I have had no problems until the last time I cleaned it and now I get a pretty substantial air build up daily. Any advice on how to fix it? Full disclosure, it's my first canister filter, has done an amazing job on my tank!

Hello .. My hw5000 drain out valve comes off very easily. Just a slight tug and it falls off. Am i missing something?

great video, i would gladly pay an extra $30 for a heavy duty lid clamp, the body, lid, and o-ring are all beefy, but that clamp looks like trouble

I bought one of these and I'm sending it back already- UV light tube had hole or leaked and filled tube up causing the wires that are exposed to get rusty and short out which made my pump act like it had no power (I had it for 6 days) with full power I had the same pressure as my Penn plex 700

I only ever heard of you talk about sunsun from back in the day..but honestly this one looks pretty nice! I haven’t used canisters it some time, as my 2 small tanks are AIO. I wouldn’t mind getting one when I get a bigger tank if it’s not already drilled. Also that latch/locking/ring system is the only real major flaw of this canister.

Very intersting product built by Sunsun But one drawback I see in it is the absence of vent for escaping air bubbles from the top as provided in Fluval FX6 product. Can someone tell me is there any provision in SUNSUN product of HW 5000?

So far this thing looks amazing except it’s so big it’s not going to fit inside anyone’s stands lol. If I get one I’m going to have to cut out the pull out drawer and install taller doors to be able to get this in and out. I already have to tilt the fx6, 304, marine land 360 size filters to fit the under my tank. The fluval clips suck! They are impossible to remover after time but these look to be a big improvement. That locking ring is similar to how you seal 55g drums. They missed the part where you put an adjustment screw in there though to adjust locking tension which is why it’s so easy to unlock.

If your in the UK these are sold by All Pond Solutions and rebranded for them BUT they are often refurbs sold as new so avoid them, ive tried twice so never again, pay that tiny bit more for a real brand lol Most wont know, but youll experience what APS are like when you try to get a refund, basically you wont and theyll still keep your return.

Holy crap!! I didnt even know this existed until this video! I like where Sunsun is going with their canister filters. I am not sure I am raedy to spend $200 on it until the bugs are out. you go over to the Zon and one reviewer already had a leaky housing. To be expected with mass production. Also I am not ready to have another filter taking up cabinet space (SUNSUN # 6!). Great video, keep up the good work.

I enjoyed your review, though I don't use canisters anymore (mattenfilters changed my life). I noticed that you mentioned the Sun Sun has a uv, but when you showed the parts, you didn't show this. Is it sold separately? Is it inline?

@@bostonmainemike I got to try them then... I've been eye balling that Filter & a SunSun HW-603 on eBay for some time... With a 300w inline heater by Hydor. I think that would be a kick Ass filtration system..

@@edwardtomaszewski78 Ed, I've used two Hydor 300w and two ISTA 500w In-line heaters at different times. One on each 703B return line. The ISTA has digital temp control. Both have been reliable, but one Hydor had issues after 9mos. SunSun makes one too, but 110v USA inventory scarce. You'll need adapter for the larger 5/8 ID (16/22mm) models to transition to the 3/4 or 1" that come with the HW-3000 and 5000's. In fact, I will be using Black vinyl hose on the 3000/5000 if I decide to go with them.

The only thing that makes this absolutely not an fx 6 killer is the fact it has not maintenance spout or a gravel vac attachment for the maintenance spout which all of the fx series canister have

In Europe we use those hoses for vacuum cleaners, not for tanks.

I didnt mind paying the extra $$ for the fluval. It comes with peace of mind for me. Just like most things in life, you get what you pay for! All in all competition is great for us the consumer's. If this filter does take off then maybe Fluval will come down in price, then i can get the canister i want for a cheaper price. Time will tell.
