Super Comet - The longest night | Science Documentary
Watch Part 2 here: • Super Comet: On a Stra...
65 million years ago the dinosaurs were wiped out by a gigantic asteroid. We could soon be next. We don't know when it will happen or where the asteroid will strike. We only know that it will happen - sometime - perhaps in 1000 years' time or perhaps tomorrow. Will it be the end of mankind?
Through the eyes of a young astronomer we experience this catastrophic event. On discovering the asteroid on collision course with Earth, he tries to give a warning, but in vain. He survives, but this is just the beginning. The impact results in an eclipse of the sun leading to a global winter and the extinction of many life-forms.
This documentary will depict the scientific background to the catastrophe, with all its consequences for mankind and the natural world. This is the end of an era, but also the beginning of a new one - the age of the conquerors.
Part 1
Sixty-five million years ago, a comet hit the earth, putting an end to life as it then was. Now a comet is about to hit the earth again. In the dramatised part of this episode, Fernando Martinez, a Mexican who works in Houston, Texas, sets off home to be with his family, the Vaton family in France seeks shelter, and the Baka pygmy tribesmen continue to hunt, unaware of the impending disaster. Astrophysicist Noah Boyle, and computer scientist Shiang Yatan, remain at the observation centre in Hawaii to try to find out exactly when the comet will hit.

Hello my friend, I just left a comment about something I experienced.. have a little look at my comment.. I have actually been diagnosed with anxiety disorder .🤗 Directly connected to my fear of this happening... I worry about it alot. I have stopped living because I fear this so much.. people say that I'm just an idiot. But I know that it's only a matter of time... And I believe this will happen in my lifetime.. if I have thoughts triggered by almost anything about this.. it stops me from wanting to have a family. Because I will be beside myself with worry about losing that family.. I don't move forward with my life. I am just waiting for it to happen.. I have mental health services helping.. but they don't know what I know.. and tell me that it's erational... but is it ..??????

One small thing… Not all life was extinguished. A few animals are said to have survived the blast. Not just the tiniest of organisms such as an amoebe , but more than one kind of tortoise 🐢 (meiolaniidae on the Southern Hemisphere did too and as was discovered relatively recently so did a kind on the Northern Hemisphere (Laurasicheris relicta). Both died out eventually thanks to humankind. (Aren’t we awesome. Well we kinda are but also relentless because we play such a big role in the extinguishing of animals, tribes, plants and even something you may not consider important: languages. Every day languages die out, because of colonization, globalization and urbanization. Young people aren’t interested in their native (tribe) language anymore, or forget because they move to cities and don’t pass it on any longer. It’s not a survival-thing per se but as a linguistics graduate I find it sad that all this diversity is lost every day, every minute to the point where likely Chinese, English, French, Portuguese and possibly Russian will be the biggest languages with only a few other smaller ones alongside it. I personally enjoy learning a new language, I am now trying to at least learn to read Vietnamese and I can understand a few things when I hear it already which just feels kinda awesome. But I drift.) In fact, it was about 70% of life that was extinguished and from the other 30 new life evolved. I’m to lazy to type those 30% out. But just to be accurate, again, the statement “all life was extinguished” is not true at all. It surprised me you actually put it that way.
@FreeDocumentary
@FreeDocumentary 2 года назад
Thank you for the extensive enlightenment. I am with you on the native languages, the dialects getting lost. I am a language lover and grieve at the continued loss of diversity. Because that’s what makes the world so vibrant.

Bro I see this happening as we speak. I don't know if you know about the recent troubles in Hong Kong. My bro teaches English there and the CCP are wiping out the traditional Cantonese language there and replacing it with Mandarin. The children as young as kindergarten now learn it growing up instead of the traditional Cantonese. The highschool classes once taught in Cantonese are now taught in Mandarin. The everyday news is now broadcast in Mandarin in the primetime slot with the Cantonese version aired later in the night (soon to be removed altogether) and more and more shows are aired in Mandarin instead of the traditional Cantonese language. Magazine, print and radio now is predominantly favored towards Mandarin. Give it ~100 years and Hong Kong will just be another province in the CCP regime with Cantonese a lost/ghost language. Also the CCP are doing an ethnic cleansing of the Uighur people again killing off another language.

@fluffy-fluffy5996
@fluffy-fluffy5996 2 года назад
@@heyojayo8642 yes I did know a bit about it but not as much as you just wrote. I find it very sad and hope Cantonese will still survive somehow. That people who speak Cantonese now manage to preserve it by teaching younger people/their children who then are at least bilingual and hopefully pass it on to their children. Sadly, time and time again it has been shown that this just won’t be reality and young people aren’t interested in a language that is never used outside the home if the rest of their world is another language. I hope it can be preserved in books, schoolbooks and otherwise in other countries so the language(s) will not disappear entirely. Sadly that too is a task that won’t be reality as for that it needs to be translated too to be able to learn and understand it. Guess there is no winning there :( I wonder what will happen to countries like Kyrgyzstan or Kazachstan which are between the Russians (will they become part of Russia much like the USSR and be forced to learn Russian and slowly dying out their language) or will they be overpowered by China, which I deem the most likely scenario tbh. I hope I’ll be proven wrong and they will be able to remain autonomous countries with their own language but they do rely on support from one of the two giants and thus I’m afraid one day one of the languages will start to dominate because they are forced to learn in order to even do business with them, get help from them etc. That’s why I am also smiling when an ethnic group, tribe etc keeps talking their own languages where the elderly want to preserve their culture, their identity, language, but sadly it is still endangered because young people tend to leave the reservation and also only learn everything in English outside of it. Nobody gets ahead or a job if they speak their native language so they tend to not want to bother to learn it. (It is however taught on an app called DuoLingo btw if anyone is interested in learning a foreign and sometimes “exotic” language. It’s free, but can be bought so you can practice your mistakes more often and have limitless tries, can make as many as you want. The free version only had five “hearts” that represent 5errors and you haven’t wait until they are full again. Sorry for the spam, but I’m learning my Vietnamese with them and while they make the weirdest sentences like “The goat is at the Ferris wheel” (for real!), that makes you pay more attention to the words and their spelling BECAUSE it makes no sense. I think there is a learning strategy behind the nonlogical sentences. As said you can download fully for free and are not forced to buy after a trial, you can remain on the free version forever. They also teach other endangered languages but I haven’t checked which one. One native Indian language I do know. (Which they call Navajo but I recently learnt that is not a term the native indigenous people of the US like to be called, so I’m just keeping it at this because the exact language I don’t know) I hope that helps with the preservation but I don’t have enormous hopes :( ) I also know one language (sorry I don’t remember the name of it or the people who speak it) which has only 21 speakers left. Or had. I’m thinking that that might even be gone already now too because there was nobody to pass it on to. I’m amazed at the fact people actually respond to my comment on the language losses, I never expected that. Sad to hear about more examples but nice to be able to have some conversation about it ☺️
@fluffy-fluffy5996
@fluffy-fluffy5996 2 года назад
@@blushellneon7958 it shouldn’t have anything to do with it and guess what: it doesn’t. It’s not about choosing “a simpler language “, it’s about economical Status in the end an especially politics. If you don’t speak Mandarin it is likely you will not get a job (anymore or when you become an adult) . Which is one heck of a good reason to learn Mandarin and not spend time learning Cantonese or letting go of using it and have it die out in a few decades. It’s NOT because it’s deemed easier by you. I assume by your comment you are not from HongKong or China.

Just thinking out loud here. Sending a intercept rocket with a payload of steel ball 1-2 ton and cable of 150-200 meter which is then attach to the asteroid. the rotation of the asteroid will keep the ball in orbit and so all the needs to be done is have trust nozzles in the steel ball activating at the right time during the spine to case a tug in the direction you need the asteroid to go. the gravity of 1-2 ton ball at 200m will have some serious tug on the asteroid with the thrusters having more tug in a direction if the steel ball is full of thrust fuel it would keep it up for a long time until empty.

00:27:52 more than 100 megatons? ALOT more , make it like 3000000 megatons. From the moment it enters the atmosphere until it hits the ground , that would take 2 - maximum 3 seconds. the entering the atmosphere alone would create a shockwave that causes in the areas below it massive damage and the air would heat up so much and fast that half a second before impact trees, plants and people would get very bad burns and directly under the path the comet crosses things would just catch on fire. and all that happens in less than 3 seconds. and then the impact. you gotta realise how much energy that massive thing creates flying through the atmosphere. if you could stop time right before the impact the ground would be lava because of the energy. and when you let the time run again for the exact moment it hits the ground. in less than 2 seconds the ground 40-100 meters deep and a few kilometers across , what turned lava even before impact will most of it become plasma during the impact and some of the ground just vaporises. In this 1 - 1,5 seconds where it touches ground, turns ground into plasma the entire 12km/8mile comet is gone. the eplosion would create a fire/plasma ball so hot that it is pure white. other side of the earth from the impact you would know after 4-6 seconds after impact that something just happened. that you probably all know, but it makes a HUUUGE difference between couple 100mt or couple million

Dear lord I am freaking losing my damn mind because of that damn canned sound. I can't freaking stand how often that metal door sound is used. It's used in every damn film these days.

The sad truth is if this hits now, we all die. The comet alone would see us off but the hellscape after?. Every single nuke plant has melted down, every single weapons depot and nuke site if not blown is leaking, and lets not even talk about bio labs and what nasties may now be oozing out. now you miss all that great what food are you eating, what clean water you sucking back?. what clean air you breathing?. The sad fact is while this makes a great movie and full of frankly unbelievable survival we wont make it alas ;/.

To be truthfully honest. They would never tell the public, because of the hestareia, and lawlessness that would happen.

It said at the beginning that ALL life was extinguished....not an accurate statement. The seas were teaming and alot of small mammals and small reptiles and other forms of life survived and then thrived after the skies started to clear.

I've been afraid of an imminent impact all of my life.. one thing is certain!!! "It's only a matter of time" I remember the news .. In fact it was one news on at six o'clock at night. Here in New Zealand , The first story of the night was about an asteroid on a collision course with earth. They actually told us about the thing and staited that this will be the only time we will be notified, As the problem of wide spread panic etc is not what our government wants.. I remember the year it is supposed to hit was 2028??? Or something. That year didn't stay in the forefront of my mind.... I couldn't believe that it was on one news ..my 75 year old father and I talked about it for hours..we were both shocked.. we told other family friends etc but most just scoffed at the idea.. I know that there is one that is on a direct coarse.!!!! One news New Zealand told us once.. and then exsplained that they won't be telling us again.. I believe this is what the new space race is all about.. I'm sure. One hundred percent!!!!!

In a few decades of a human life time the chances you will be involved in something like this is less than 0.1%. The comet is called a near miss when it is still much more further out than the Moon.

If there was only one window of opportunity why would they send just one payload knowing it wasn't likely to work? In reality, they would send multiple detonations, with a second wave to disperse the projectiles.
