My Dad had a Hahn mower for many years-I hated cutting the grass, but what I would give to have one of those days with him back-I miss him so much-good job as always, buddy!

I like how Taryl sees a little roll pin and immediately his mind goes back some 30- 40 years and remembers the fix B&S made for the fuel leak issue, realizing someone installed the fix on this tiller!

I’ve rebuilt many of these in my day but was not aware of the Teflon/pin repair. What we used to do is to flat file the aluminum top of tank to even out the warpage. Worked every time.

Damn! 50 whole minutes.... wow this can’t get any better.

I have a 1975 model Briggs 5 HP on an old 1958 Gilson front tine tiller and it's the best running piece of equipment in my stable. People have discounted Briggs & Stratton over the years but I still love them.

Chances are you won't see this message on such an old video but i wanted to say how much your videos have helped me with fixing and learning how to do things right. Watching about 5 videos a day and the way you describe and show how things work and how to fix them is really great. Today I had some new briggs plastic carbs to rebuild and after watching your video on it I did the job without any dramas and got two mowers working again. Watching this one is also showing me how to service the carb on my old 1970's briggs engine power classic mower I am going to be doing a restoration on soon. So many things I have fixed easy since I started watching your videos so Thanks a heap from down under.

We used to have a Hahn Eclipse dealer in our neighborhood back in the 60’s. I remember seeing this tiller new along with the awesome lineup of Hahn Eclipse mowers when I was a kid. They all had the handle grips curved back at an angle, were all yellow and white and the mowers had a picture of a giraffe on the grass bag. I guess a giraffe was their mascot or something. Great quality mowers, of course we never had anything but a cheap department store mower.

My dad had one when I was a small child. I tilled with it for years. Good machine. Ours was far older then 1970.

I have Ad Block Plus, but I always disable it for watching Taryl's videos. I also watch whole min of commercial and won't skip. It's a small effort on my part to help these guys, considering the effort they put to make the videos. These guys are better than anything on TV.

Another good video. This tiller would have been a great complete restoration project , I wish ya'll would do more total restoration videos.

That tiller look exactly like the first tiller my Dad bought way back in the 1970's. My Dad and I broke up the first garden we ever had at our home I was 11 or 12 years old at the time. That thing went through the bolts that kept the tines in place like they were nothing. lol ! Later on my Dad bought a 8 horse power rear tine tiller from our local Co Op it was a Turf Til and that machine was light years easier to till and operate than that old front tine tiller. Sure miss plowing our and my neighbors little garden she had every year. They are all gone now but my memories are still very much a part of me. Love all your RU-vid posting. tip of the week... put a magnet along your pressure tester - can place where you want it so it stays put!

You can also put two diphrams in these carburetors to fix the internal leak. Cut a circular hole in the choke lever area, remove the choke link arm, and put the diphram with the hole cut out on top. I have a very rare 1968 Firestone 20 inch mower with this carburetor and this is the way I fixed it. Figured it out on my own and it runs great. I put new points back in mine. My mower also has the rare wind up starter! Nice tiller you worked on Teryl! Keep it up.😎👍

I’ve worked on many of those same engines over the years and even converted a couple to the electronic ignition, (should have been a Magnetron sticker in that kit too) but it’s fun watching Taryl go through the whole process again. Can’t beat those early Briggs, they were well built.

Wish I had this back in the 60's when I was a kid! Had to now grass for money back then. And my dad was overseas with the Navy so I had to do all this stuff hit and miss!

If the gas that was in it was 1978 or before, chances are good that it was "leaded" and certainly non ethanol. that carb would likely be good for many years if using non ethanol gas in it. Taryl, I think you're Great.......love your program!

My grandpa had the 5hp version. Ran it for many years. Was a decent "scratcher" for sure!

Wow. I love the long ones taryl. Honestly, who doesn't like a long one?

Back in the 80's and 90's I stocked dozens of those 391681 diaphragms, roll pin kits, and points. Put so many of them in. Still have the special pliers to compress the condensor spring to install the wires, lots easier than the little plastic cap they include in the kit. I still stock a couple of these, but they have been on my parts shelf forever. Most I do with them now is dust them off every so often. Lol

I soooo wish I could have seen this back in the 80's when I was just learning to do fix these engines. Taryl's experience is first rate, and so is his diagnostic ability. Well Done!!

I picked up a ancient SEARS tiller from the 60s few years back! Had to replace the points with a Briggs & Stratton electronic ignition kit, cleaned out the carb, and she started right up.

last Fall, I purchased a couple of those air gap spark plug testers. after spending a LOT of time trying to use them, they made the trip to the 'round file' I'm still looking for a good spark plug tester that (perhaps) uses a neon bulb rather than a air gap.

I forgot a great deal when I watched this. I grew up through the latter part of the 70’s and 80’s back then where I grew up people didn’t like paying for the land fill, and the scrap pile was free, you could dump whole mowers and things in it back then but lots of people threw their trash away in the woods. There were always engines and mowers, tillers etc. just thrown away off the side of the rod in turn offs and in the woods I scavenged all I could because I had no money for nothing and the old man said go earn it, and he didn’t give me anything. I built my first lawn mower it had parts from a Snapper, Toro, and Montgomery wards. What a Frankenstein but I learned a lot about engines loved working on these things as a kid my dad however did teach me about carbs and such but the rest I learned as I went. I suppose that’s why I enjoy watching this dam channel...

Those Briggs & Stratton engines and the carburetors I personally think they're one of the best engines out there for small engines. They last forever was hardly any issues.😮😮

I had a Hahn snow thrower, I called it a Hahn death machine. The controls were like a motorcycle as you pull on a grip lever to stop it's movement if you let go of machine it just kept moving.

Need to make a video of how to check oil? I did my neighbors mower and the oil was past the full or below the mark. Love the videos learn a lot of new stuff that I didn't learn in school

That's a good tip with the Teflon washer inside the carby as I have a 4 HP Briggs & Stratton engine in pieces which has that part missing,it's a 1985 model. I'm pretty sure that they fitted the spring on the tank side of the diaphragm instead of inside the carby. Either way,the engine needs a rebuild including a new inlet valve, camshaft follower,camshaft & piston rings. The case also needs some aluminium soldering repairs as well & I'm prepared to go that far with it.

I've got the same exact engine on my 1972 Sears rototiller. I have put 3 gas tanks on it and rebuilt the carb 4 times. I finally got smart and soldered a petcock in the new tank so I can drain the gas. It's in my shed now. Have to bust it out for spring planting of my 10 x 20 garden.

Ideally, before putting the ignition coil back on, the area under it and around the cylinder should have been cleaned thoroughly. Those cooling fins were nearly completely filled in with dirt. Clean those out thoroughly to ensure efficient cooling so you don't have to do it again after 50 hours of usage. Or find out the hard way when the engine overheats.

Taryl with all respect AND the learning/ enjoyment I get from your videos. I think you have dinosaur juice all over you 😆 on the topic of the pulsa-jet carb. just for clarification, the long tube draws up the fuel using the fuel pump and deposits it into the chamber until it fills enough, the small tube ( acting like a vacu-jet carb ) draws the fuel up from the chamber into the needle jet. thats why if the mower has sat for awhile and the chamber is empty and the tank is half full it takes several pulls to pump fuel to fill the chamber enough to start the engine. If you notice the cut outs at the top of the chamber , if you fill the tank all the way up fuel will flow in through those cut out and it will fill the chamber for easy starting. I always thought that the tanks on those carbs warped which is bad because as you know the tank is the bottom of the carb. In the owners manual it says to let the mower cool off before refilling. which for a long time I thought was for safety. i later started to think it is because refilling a hot tank will cool gas causes the tank to warp. look how thick the gas tank carb area is on the mylon ( plastic carb) carbs. I still have my mower my parents bought for me in '65. has a different deck...the tin worms attacked the original deck. It's retired now. i use one of the 12 or is it 13ci mowers B&S makes...it was a curb find..it was full of dinosaur syrup. great videos , thanks for making them

I've got one just like it was my Dad's. I got it running a few years ago. Run fine was using it the it started oil smoking a little when hot and losing power. Checked on parts like rings and piston. Couldn't find any so back it the garage and still there. Good video😃
