Saw the quick change thing last year. First thing I did was check out the cost on the new filter. Thought no thanks and figured I’d have to change brands of riders when it came time to do so. John Deere has a conversion kit with the oil, nipple, and a drain pipe. It's cheaper than the stupid oil change kit.

3/8" pipe nipple. 3/8" ball valve. 3/8" street tee. $20 at the hardware store. "Easy change" forever without doing it half assed. Open valve, drain into gatorade bottle. Refill oil. No paper towel needed. There is a reason Briggs threads these with good old fashioned NPT pipe thread. Friends don't let friends drive to a Deere dealer.

JD has a bulletin out listing the parts needed to switch back to a conventional filter. Along with installing the filter nipple, they also recommend removing the drain plug and installing one of their longer drain tubes so draining is easier and less messy.

Another great video! I just changed mine and had to use an oil wrench to get it off and to put it back on. Mine did not rotate easy by hand. I bought two of these quick and easy filters when I bought the mower last year. I'm ditching this method as soon as i use both filters. PS, I've changed car and mower oil for almost 50 yrs. This was a pain.

I would put the pipe extension on the drain plug to get it away from the frame....john deere has them all flim flammed

Hey.. There is a butt load of people out there who dont want to do any service on anything. I worked in a neighborhood in the spring the sheer amount of snow blowers and lawn mowers at the curb with free signs was staggering. Kept me in beer money for years. Put a pull cord on a mower. Clean a carb. Sell it. So yea, this surprises me not. Grandpa always said. " Some people have more money than sense." They would say. my time is too valuable to be messing with a mower. Cool, I will take it off your hands. Good idea for some of you young kids out there. If I still lived near one of the upper middle class areas. I would have flyers out. offering onsite Tune up specials. Just on the weekends. Make enough for your new truck. Save them a trip? yea they would be all over that. Cant tell you exactly were that line is drawn. You go into too swanky of a neighborhood and they pay people to mow their yards do their landscaping. There is that next level down. The Almost there ones. Not enough to plow out thousands for a Landscape service. But just enough to not want to have to deal with it. But you have too. Flyers will find that market. Word of mouth will keep you busy.

Great video. Very entertaining! I think that most of the commenters don’t understand the audience that this feature is targeted at. Some people don’t want to to deal with used oil or get their hands dirty. Thousands of people pay their dealer $200 to tuneup their lawnmower every year. This product fits right in between for those people who don’t want to get their hands dirty but also don’t want to pay to have the oil change done for them.

Thanks! I would just leave it the way it is and drain the oil before I use the ez oil filter. Top it off if necessary.

Being top heavy like that, seems like over time it wouldn't be good to have that thing vibrating because it may loosen or screw up the threws on that mount where the oil filter would normally go.

Great video. I will be buying a lawn mower that will have this wonderful 50 dollar filter. I am not certain if I will perform this modification because I run fully synthetic 5-30W oil after the break in. You video is great.

I have a 1993 JD LX188, one of the solid commercial duty lawn tractors with the LC Kawi twin. It's an amazing mower but I get flack from all the JD guys because it does not have a strongbox battery, Hygard in the transaxle, JD oil in the crankcase or a JD filter... The JD oil filter crosses to one for a 4cyl Toyota Carolla. I used Tuff Torq's recomendation for the trans oil and I just have good oil in the crankcase... I also have a 2006 Husquvarna YT2148 with a 23hp Vanguard and aside from being louder being air cooled, it works and cuts just as good, steers almost as sharp and rides a little bit better. The Husky originally came from Lowes as well

The part number for those kind of filters and not Auto parts line and it wix is fl400s and a friend is 3614 and it STP it's s3614 they all work

plastic hoods on john deere mowers which break easily are a real turn-off

I was at home Depot I was looking at Cub cadet also as of July first2020 and then Lowe's also has 30-second oil change on some of theirs Troy-Bilt and others riding mowers with Briggs & Stratton engines I'm on the Eastern side of the United States I don't know if that would make a difference because I know when I travel some products are available out west that's not available here I don't know why

My 10 year old Toro Titan with a Briggs cost almost that much to change the oil and it has just a simple spin on filter!

A motorcraft FL 920S filter cost 3.99 at walmart, compared to 12 to $15 from john deere and its a better filter.

I'm a cheap SOD so I use Super Duper Tech ST3614 oil filters from Walmart. They replace Briggs, Kohler and Tecumseh or at least everyone I have. Double check but $3 beats $18 by a 12 pack.

Always entertaining & educational! Question for all reading this. I’d like to install a oil pressure gauge on my 1999 Kohler Command Single CV15S spec 41592. Any thoughts on a plug location to be drilled & tapped for a sensor?

For those concerned about only partially replacing the oil, consider this: Today’s good synthetic oils don’t go bad - they just get dirty. For example, Mobil One has a semi-truck running around the U.S. that never gets an oil change. Every 10,000 miles they take the oil out of the truck and filter the dirt out of it. They then put the oil back into the engine and at the last count I’ve read they have over 3 million miles on that same oil. So it makes sense that if you use good synthetic oil in your lawn tractor and then use a good filter to keep the oil clean you should also never have to change the oil. (Most owners use their lawn tractor 50 hours a year or 500 hours in 10 years - That only 30,000 miles in an automobile.)

Taryl, I have a 21 ohv I/C v twin 407677. It has a cap where the oil filter would go. Can I put an oil filter in its place? I know I have to get the fitting because the threads are part of the cap casting.

The hex 12 can be used to install the Briggs oil filter connector. I think that’s the size. I’ve done the conversion before and doing another soon. I’ve seen the John Deere filter and oil for $70 now. Insane. Using a Napa Gold filter and Castro Edge synthetic oil, it’s no were near that for me to do an old fashioned oil change. SMH 🤦‍♂️

I have a 5 yr old JD which has the standard oil filter, a few months ago changed the oil and filter, picked up a Purolator oil filter for half the price JD wants for theirs. This new design, while convenient, is ridiculously over priced. Since JD went to this I figured if I ever had to replace the mower I would have to go with a different brand, but now that I see it can be changed back it gives me hope.>>> Now I see the comments about the factory conversion listed below, definitely the way to go!

In Canada the filter is $80.00 Cdn. I am definitely converting to the old system.

so does it release oil out of the new filter once you screw it on? say you have the drain plug off at the time you install the filter. will you then lose the oil from the new filter?

How about putting a galvanized pipe in the sump and extending the drain out to where it wouldn't leak on the frame?

I don't mind using it i change the oil every 2 years anyways only put little over 20 hrs a year on it.but I do drain all the oil.and the quick change oil filter has a filter thats 2 times bigger then a regular filter to me thats a plus i have seen people cut these open

Some additional background information on this deal. John Deere didn't really want to do it because it adds to the cost compared to their competitors. The real push to add this *feature* (LOL) was Home Depot. They did some consumer surveys and the number one complaint was having to take their lawn tractors to a dealer to change the oil and filter for $150.00 or more because Home Depot would deliver the tractor for free but you were on your own after at that. So by the time the consumer rented a trailer (assuming they could hook up to one) the cost was sky high. So this was the solution the Home improvement stores came up with. John Deere dealers went nuts. Here in Canada, these 30 second oil filters retail for $79.00 + 13% sales tax. I've already converted 20 of these JD tractors here in Ontario. By the way, John Deere will not honor their factory warranty the tractor of this unit is removed. So the customer keeps the assembly, then buys at least one new 30 second oil filter as a backup, should the motor need to have warranty service.

I had to do something similar to a Toro ride on mower my dad was minding for a "friend", it ran the Honda GSV530 twin cylinder engine & I bought a Repco ROF142 (equivalent to a Ryco Z142A) oil filter for it instead of the Honda oil filter which costs much more. It looks like I have to rebuild my Briggs & Stratton 92500 engine (3 horsepower vertical shaft or 3.5 hp ungoverned) as it's burning much more oil than it appears to. My dad used it for 1 hour to mow the lawn & it burned 250mLs of oil in that period of time,note that I topped it up with oil the last time it was used. That's nearly half of its oil gone as the oil capacity is 600 mLs,I'm starting to think that it's worn rings,in behind the inlet valve looks all clean & the exhaust valve isn't oily, the spark plug tip is starting to show up as having thick black carbon deposits on it from burning oil !

Taryl I'm not here to tell you what to do. I am simply here to pick up on tricks and methods of repair that you are willing to share.

I started back in the day when parts lookup was in paper manuals, then microfiche. Ordering parts was spending 10 min or more on the phone calling out parts #'. Then came along the fax machine , When the parts arrived, sometimes we would receive someone else's order.....

That oil change system seems like a really bad idea for longevity. Only changing 25% of the oil and none in the bottom of the pan where the the bulk of the sediment exists. I am in the market for a new lawn tractor and will not be purchasing one with this on it.

You can change it using Amsoil and a Wix XP filter for half the price of that filter.
