I'm researching the Alaska right now, but i ask myself "am i going the right way?" every time i see one of those in the enemy team and blow them up instantly... Still, it's such a cool ship. Like a mini-Iowa.
I grinded it and regret-ish it. It's a decent good ship, good fire rate with decent shells, good AA but poor placement of the magazines and poor armor. It's more of a sniper than a brawler since it's fire arc has a high angle to get in from the deck on BBs. But compare to the Kron and Sharn it's a bit underwhelming.
It’s an incredibly fun ship, highly recommended. The AA and secondaries on it absolutely shred, it’s armored if you angle and keep distance, and the main guns are a perfect balance of firepower and reload speed. If you ace the ship it’s damn near battleship levels of survivability.
I have the Alaska and I absolutely love it. It's such an amazing ship IMO since it has such a high fire rate compared to other US battleships and it also has amazing pen.. the downside is the explosive filler and the survivability.. other than that it's amazing
It’s been 6 months, so I’m assuming you have it, already. But yeah, if you use it in its IRL-intended role, it slaps pretty hard. Use her amazing (for a cruiser) armament to shred battlecruisers, cruisers, and destroyers, and use her speed to either run from or HE-kite battleships. Stay angled, my friend.
Hey cap, I recommend you bring some VT 5-inch ammo. I find it far more effective at taking down aircraft than manually aiming AA. Plus, with Alaska's radar, you can calculate lead, making your 5inch/38s extremely deadly against aircraft
Also, I think the place the Alaska really shines is Naval EC. The open seas really allow Alaska to take full advantage of its speed to fire and maneuver. I've easily gotten 20 kills per death in EC mode with the Alaska
I totally agree! I've played her in EC and also a 1 hour long Circle battle. The super long-range fights with her ability to dodge and mask turrets are great. I'll definitely run He-vt as main HE for secondaries. Not quite unlocked them yet. A dozen more games, and she will be spaded.
Alaska Class were the last type of battlecruiser have catapults on midships since Northampton, Portland and Pensacola class to have catapults on midships 5:35 baby Iowa well more like downsize South Dakota class battleships
Despite the fact they were rated as a "large cruiser", the Alaska-class DO have more in common with the roll of a true battlecruiser. They are what would be a modern method of the battlecruiser doctrine. Back when HMS Invincible was being built, the plan was to use such vessels as cruiser killers and NOT exactly capital ships per say (That is until John "Jackie" Fisher thought it was a great idea to have more vessels emphasize more on speed than anything else). Essentially, knock out enemy cruisers (at the time of Invincible, the old "armored cruisers") whilst keeping a fair distance away from contemporary battleships. They had the armament of a battleship but had to sacrifice either armor OR had fewer guns (basically in the case of the German battlecruisers) in order to obtain a high level of speed. They were NEVER supposed to be used as equals with the battleship, and the Battle of Jutland back during WW1 made that abundantly clear. Now, I know that by the time the Alaska-class were being commissioned, no modern battleship of the time was armed with the 12-inch gun since the Wyoming-class battleships. But the 12-inch gun the Alaskas were armed with had the same or slightly superior punching power when compared to the 14-inch/50cal naval gun used on both the New Mexico-class and Tennessee-class battleships. To me, a cruiser armed with anything much bigger than an 8-gun, has the speed comparable to that of the Iowa-class battleships, has armor protection against cruiser caliber guns but not battleship caliber guns, and also has the tonnage equal to that of a treaty limit battleship (35,000 tons), I'm sorry, but I'm calling that a battlecruiser. They may not be contemporaries to any battleships, but their characteristics are pretty much straight forward.
Yep that's correct. The difference with the Alaska vs the contemporary idea of a battlecruiser,(and where the debate stems from) is that the Alaska's were scaled up from a cruiser base design. Whereas most other nations took their concept of a battlecruiser from a scaled down version of a battleship. In my personal definition, it fits the battlecruiser designation. I find the slightly different "definitions" for a warship amongst various nations to be highly interesting.
7:53 IRL Alaska (Duilio and Scharnhorst as well for that matter) had an internal torpedo defence system, however Gaijin only models external torpedo bulge systems atm...
Good day sir, (well this video took 2h to watch, medical issue.. ). Anywho I shall have this large cruiser in a week of research soon but it's definitely a good ship for it even has basketball hoops & all of the floater net baskets everywhere on the model. Well that's probably the best map for Project 56K since it forces CQC action & one of few ships that can up BR'ed for defence, But I should warn you although that's a cheeky move using the stone arcs if a player is watching such attack run will be your DoooooooooOM (Spoken in Admiral Trench's voice).
Hope everything is all good with the health mate o7 I guess I was questioning his motives in the DD. they were soon made plain when I saw that contrail and realised it was Bravyy XD
Before I thought adding Iowa, Bismarck and Yamato would be too op compared to other nations, but USSR is somehow the top of ships too, and the hood is as far as I know the biggest Britain’s got
hood is by far the largest ship in war thunder, it was also longer than the bismarck. but tbh length doesnt mean much. The KGV was quite small but had the best armour out of every allied ship and some of the best tech.
Incredibly fun ship with a Moffett sized off button. I have good luck when angling and moving in a consistent zig zag while changing speeds. Get lazy and that front ammo rack beckons to be tickled.
what was that background music playing when you went through her history and place in the game? it almost sounded like world of warships port music lol
Ive been grinding british naval with the HMS Renown and it makes me so envious to see the accuracy of the Alaska's guns since for some reason the British 15" guns struggle to get half to a third of a salvo on target at 6km. Im pretty sure the 15"/42s are more accurate at 12km than under 10km lmao
I feel that. Some triple turrets have amazing dispersion compared to their twin gun counterparts But then ships like Duillio have horrible dispersion despite having triple turrets 🤣
This. It was such a letdown after doing all that work to get to Hood and then taking it out in the test drive and seeing that the guns can't hit shit. I would have far more preferred that Hood stayed out of the game until Gaijin thought the game was ready for the 15" guns because it's really obvious that they've artificially nerfed the accuracy to balance the ship.
@@CmdrTyrael I have that bind for my mb4 but it still won’t let me fire individual barrels like you cause when I hold down the button it shows my shells flying
Not a mod just a setting. 🙂 There is an option the naval settings to "Bound secondaries to primary fire" Currently the event has overridden naval controls, so it's not accessible. Once the event ends it should revert to normal and then be toggled "ON"
if u play the Alaska only bring 450 AP shells u will survive a lot longer i promise u. anything under 450 is best. and if u bring any HE shells u will get ammo racked. normally if u get ammo racked u die but having limited ammo When ur ammo rack shells just vanishes and u live idk thats just how it works as of 2/4/2024
It's a shame. They should of never scrapped them. They should of just made them like kirov battle cruisers. Added alot of missles. And jist kept upgrading them . We could of had uss Alaska and uss Guam there in the 80s to vs the kirovs
@wastelander89 I think if you removed a turret or two. You could keep the armor and stack her front and back with VLS. One turret for the iconic shore bombardment. Not to mention all the CIWS and systems it would be able to carry
Everyone has trouble with scharnhorst. She is most susceptible to AP rounds from Alaska at long range. You out Penn her shells at range and plunging super heavy shells can defeat the turtle back. The closer scharn gets the more dangerous she is. Despite this... still hard to sink.
If I go low ammo I usually run out 🤣 468 only gives me 17 mins of fire. I will always rely on my gunnery. 🫡 But I'm glad that ammo count finally means something. I hope that eventually, we will be able to affect our draft through ammo and fuel weight.
