Clint!! Thank you so much for the kind words! We have been working with these little guys for generations now, and I feel in some cases really taking the first steps towards a truly “domesticated” reptile. Many people who only knew them 2-3 generations ago would be VERY surprised by how they are now! On a sidenote, I have been wanting to set up a large walk-in enclosure based on Sulawesi island for a mainland Retic in the new shop. Do you know what else lives on Sulawesi? It’s green, small, and loves to jump on people… Maybe I need to put some thought into how to accomplish a multi species environment?

I got my Super Dwarf from you via CNB reptiles, and he is my FAVORITE snake ever! I can pull out my ball pythons when I'm doing something else and they'll hang out with me, but when I just want to straight up handle a snake, as the activity, I pull him out and am both mesmerized and soaked in pee haha. I named him Clint, by the way! Thank you so much Garrett for my best friend!

Steve Irwin spent so many years trying to convince the world that the retic is big and dangerous and it was completely undone by Clint hauling the front third of that beautiful nanner back onto his lap with great effort. They can be almost perfectly safe! Mainland retic guardians just need a snake spotter!

It kind of is though lol. It really does make you think of the matrix every single time. Ive had big false water cobras and burmese pythons and retics nearly get me on the nose before. Its a rush for sure lol. Scary, and not something id want to do on purpose, but the rush you get from barely dodging a bite is kind of "amazing" in a way lol.

It is! I've had ball pythons and juvie boas do it while I was handling them a few times. I'm very careful with going into their enclosures, so nothing ever happens there. But sometimes, you don't pay attention and it just strikes. It gets you wide eyed and shocked for a second. The only way I can describe it is like watching a nature show and a snake strikes at the camera in slow motion. It's funny that there's a strike and they just go about hanging out and exploring.

@@Sometallguy Well as they are now they sometimes hunt people. Dont think you can find anything larger on an isolated island. But you can speculate on seal-eating arctic snakes. They are white and stealthy, very hard to find.

For a sd retic it tends to vary on their size and personality. Same for retics. 6 feet long by 3 foot wide and 2 foot high is probably the minimum size. You want them to pretty much be able to stretch out the length of the cage. Some like smaller cages and some love larger cages with a shelf in their.

Check out the video by Reach Out Reptiles where they rate enclosures sent into them. A lot could be better imo but google could also suffice, I wouldn’t count on any one source being your final source anyways so it’s perfectly fine being imperfect.

Athena is one of my most favorite snakes in the world. My family loved handling her in the reptile room when I bought them there. Because of her, I will some day own a super dwarf retic. Hopefully sooner rather than later. They have so much personality and are a joy to be around.

I got a warning bite from a 15’ reticulated python. It was a bloody mess and I was grateful not to be holding him when it happened. I was especially grateful the men who had been terrified of the snake had left before it happened, I can only imagine how much it would’ve traumatized them.

I can point you towards sd retics in the UK. Kalatoa, karompa's or kauardi. I used to breed them and can get 75% purple albino sd.

I was actually looking into owning a super dwarf earlier this month. I knew that the mainland was illegal but there was nothing on the dwarf/super dwarfs. Unfortunately, when I got into contact with my states environmental conservation department, they told me “Because dwarf Burmese and Reticulated pythons are still classified as the same species as standard Burmese and Reticulated, they are classified as dangerous animals and cannot be legally possessed as pets”. A little confusing because I can still own a boa constrictor imperator and almost all the Morelia species of python (can’t own scrub pythons).

@@krissadventures pretty sure even if a snake escaped in NY it would likely die of cold exposure. Politicians as usual who make the rules dont even understand the rules they put in place 🙄. And frankly most giant snakes are actually far safer than big dogs. But you can't educate the willfully ignorant

@@Madchris8828 I agree, but I don’t think New York is afraid of a snake getting out and killing someone, they are afraid that it’s going to kill the keeper of the snake. Very unfortunate considering that every new generation of captive bred snake is a little more peaceful compared to the previous generation. You can see this with larger snakes very well.

There was also a species of mammoths which was called the pygmy mammoth that grew only as big as s cow. This dwarf retic is the same case. I think it is to not finish all the food on a small area due to the big size. But also some animals become really big on an island, like Galapagos tortoises, komodo dragons etc.

I have 2 super dwarves from Garrett, and I think they are incredible and recommend them highly. With that said, one of the thing SOME people like about the ball python is that it is a slow moving to even stationary snakes. Retics move, A LOT, more so than even boas. This is something I could see throwing some people off about them. That's the only thing I could see requiring an adjustment period for a handler. That an like Clint said repeatedly, they love to eat. No more hunger strikes. My two cents.

This reminds me of an old meme that was passed around the teptile shop i worked at. It was a photo of a huge wall of reptile enclosures and it said, "If anyone ever tells you you have too many reptiles..." "Stop talking to that person, you dont need that kind of negativity in your life". For us employees, many of which bred reptiles, it was painfully accurate lol.

Garret isn't the only reputable breeder of SD/D and there are several other breeders that have locals of dwarf and super dwarfs that Garret won't acknowledge even though something like a halamahara retic only gets to about 10ft in the wild and the biggest I've seen is 12ft or Ternate another dwarf that only reaches about 11ft for a large female. D&M reptiles are an example of a reputable breeder that has locals and morphs that Garret can't touch in SD they are who I'm going with when I get mine, they are truly pioneering.

That’s one heck of a decision you have on your hands. I own a burm and it is by far one of the best snakes ever. It tolerates handelling excellently even with children (obviously children are always under close supervision) Burns are amazing snakes but even I am so draw to D/SD relics as a burm lover

So thrilled to see Garrett Hartle on the channel. I had the pleasure of meeting Garrett in person a few times at reptile expos in Pittsburgh, and he is just as friendly, personable and informative in person as he was on your channel (and is on his own Reach Out Reptiles channel). I do not own a Super Dwarf Retic (at least not yet!), and when I first met him at an expo, I was up front about the fact that I was in no way prepared to purchase one, but was just admiring them. Despite this, Garrett not only let me hold one of his amazing snakes, but took quite a bit of time to educate me on the species and about his breeding program. I will never forget the experience. (The snake was a Black Golden Child, and I could not believe the rainbow iridescence…) I have been so pleased to see the very well-deserved growth and success he has experienced as a breeder these past few years. It is clear that he takes excellent care of his animals, and has an impressive depth of knowledge about their care and breeding.

I’m so glad to hear you say snakes have liquid urine! It’s been driving me nuts because I’ve asked people (including BioDude) what happens with the pee in a bioactive setup and I’ve only been told “they don’t have liquid urine”. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Both my BRB and my ball python pee plenty. Anyway Athena is so beautiful!

That's crazy! I've gotten nearly all of my bioactive setups for my lizards from the BioDude, I wouldn't expect him to say that. I'm looking into getting a snake in the coming years. Have you figured out an answer yet?

Unfortunately no I haven’t gotten an answer. I wish I could because I don’t like the thought of my burrowing BRB hanging out in urine-soaked substrate, and what about ammonia?? I love the BioDude and use his stuff too, I was so disappointed he doesn’t know snakes pee liquid. I asked Mariah (I think that’s her name?) from Reptifiles too and she also said snakes don’t urinate, although she said maybe if a snake is very well hydrated it will. It’s frustrating because I have 2 snakes and they DEFINITELY produce liquid and it’s like I’m being gaslit or something. 😅 Maybe they’ve never had snakes on paper towels at all so they just haven’t noticed the liquid, I guess? I used paper towels for quarantine and absolutely have thrown away quite a few soaking wet ones lol.

I love retics but have never had one because of the gigantic size they get too. They are breathtakingly beautiful. I would totally consider getting a dwarf retic. I've had full grown bermese pythons and even they were getting just a little bit too big at 16-18 feet.

These seem like great snakes. I love the patterns and the really sharply defined scale coloring. It's like a hex grid was wrapped around the snake and then each was precisely hand colored to make the overall pattern. Being semi-arboreal is wonderful you might actually get to see it in it's enclosure when it wasn't being handled. It also looks like handling actually involves handling. These seem even more curious than boas and move around more as opposed to being a lap snake. That's a win in my book.

YESSSSSS SUPERDWARF RETIC VIDEO 😍! I found out that the motley goldenchild morph exists in superdwarf (edit: via crosses with mainland retics) recently but haven't gone down the research hole because the research hole is where the snakes are. And going where the snakes are is how to end up bringing home another snake! Edit: WELP guess I'm going down the research hole, where the snakes are 🕳️🐍 This was DEFINITELY worth being awake at 7am on a Saturday 👍❤️

I had that same "Matrix" moment when I was working for the zoo. I had been there nearly 2 years and "slurpy" (you could hear him drink anywhere in the behind the scenes area) our 16' 9" retic who was living there for over 15 years, and was 14 feet then. He would always sit motionless, and or shrug off the food offerings until 1 day, BOOM, he was awake, hungry, and took me by surprise. He ate 7- 4lb rabbits that day, and wasn't hungry again for 17 months.

There is a python in The Matrix? I haven’t seen the movie, but I do want to. Haven’t heard of a python in the cast.

I just bought a 1 week old baby, 25% dwarf retic.... He is absolutely gorgeous... Definitely looking forward to watching him grow... Plenty of handling, He should be as gentle as my other snakes :)

I am super glad I found your channel. I have had ball pythons for four years and have been wanting to scale up, but a mainland retic is just too big (nearly 30 feet is just mind blowing for a house pet). Now I know I can get a dwarf or super dwarf retic and have the bigger snake I crave.

My short list is Demerils Boa first because the enclosure temp/humidy range is easier and I can learn to keep that steady where I'll be living without worrying I'll end up with a dead snake. One of these or a Boa second since they are semi-arboreal and get to a nice size but are handleable by one person. Finally, once I've learned to read snake body language, gotten the mistakes with that out of the way, and saved up for a while, maybe an emerald tree boa because I don't think there's a better looking non-venomous snake that can still be handled if you know what you're doing and get them used to it early. That obviously wouldn't be the one being passed to somebody else to hold who wasn't knowledgeable in handling snakes.

@@CrimFerret Are we twins?? That's almost exactly what I'm thinking (although I'll probably change my mind a million times before I'm at the point where I can have a reptile.) I need to wait until I go to and finish college before I can have one. I actually have a list of reptiles I want to have, mostly snakes, that has about 15 species in it! My favorites are Dumerils and Common Boas and Super Dwarf Relics, followed closely by Ball Pythons, Emerald Tree Boas, and Brazilian Rainbow Boas. Good Luck!

This is so fascinating to me. I love the science that goes into selectively breeding these guys. It never ceases to amaze me the elaborate colors and patterns breeders are able to create across all breeds. A reticulated Python is my dream snake for many reasons but the idea of having a 20ft snake is definitely intimidating. When I have the space and time I’ll definitely get a dwarf or super dwarf.

Hi Clint, just wanted to say I'm loving your channel, and have been doing all sorts of catching up on it the last couple of weeks (along with Emily's.. ). I've just loved snakes since I was a kid in Liberia, where I sometimes caught and kept west African night adders which were pretty common during rainy season there. Recent denizens in my house include an eastern chain kingsnake, and a hognose. I just adore Brazilian smooth snakes ;), have handled several, and someday perhaps I'll have room for one. Anyway, the positivity projected in this channel is just wonderful. Thanks for doing this!!

My retics were mainlands and the chillest snakes I'd ever worked with. Got them as babies, tap trained and handled often, plus used a very strict feeding protocol (F/T only, separate enclosure, etc) and especially my female was a complete potato. Got tagged twice when she was only a few feet long, both times were my fault, and it never happened again once I fixed my mistake. I miss them so much - they were my babies.

I do think this is a different enough retic to change the video, since in the retic video emphasizing how non ideal their size was key, and a video on their far more resealable alternative is a clear help.

when i worked at a reptile shop there was a super dwarf purple albino retic which i grew very attached to. She taught me how intelligent reticulated pythons can be and she seemed to understand the time at which my shift ended meant that I was going to take her out and handle her. I never grew attached to any other animal while working there as I understood they would all be sold eventually but her personality and intelligence had me feel like i had a connection to this snake. Due to the price point of the animal she stuck around for a few months and I was legitimately heartbroken when I walked in one morning and was told she had been purchased by the largest and most reputable retic breeder in my country. Such an intelligent animal being a breeder and not a pet stung a little lol.

hey love the show I've been watching your channel for a long while. i brought home my 1st ball python this past September and since, my love and passion for reptiles continues to grow i just absolutely enjoy learning about all the different species of reptiles that are out there and also teach others of them. I too created a youtube channel however i am not interested in making money off it. i do not have a patreon and i do not ask for donations at all. i just absolutely love these animals and enjoy teaching others of them. right now i shoot my videos using the camera on my phone and that's only because right now with everything i am dealing with in life (aside from caring for my animals) right now i just cant afford to get an actual camera that records. I've reached out to a couple of camera brands to see if they would donate one to go towards education of animals and both times i was turned down. any who i just wanted to say your an inspiration and i do really enjoy your content.

I don't know if this is true, but how they got to those islands might be because during the ice age sea levels were lower, so those islands would've been attached to the mainland and that's how they got there.

When I was 12 years old my dad took me to a pet store and got me a Burmese python. (My dad had one earlier in his life that was 14 feet) he got to a little over 9 feet and lived until I was a young adult, and he passed away. He was awesome though, on feeding days about a dozen kids would get off the bus with me and run to my house to watch him eat. I’ve always wanted another but have never gotten one because of the risk that it could grow to an unmanageable size (ground zero common sense) I am really glad to have learned about dwarf retics. I may just end up looking for one at the reptile expo coming up in my city

A few days I ago I handled my first big snake. it was a dwarf retic and now I'm even more in love 😂 he was really used to handling (reptile "zoo") and even a 6 year old was able to hold him (for a short time, the snakes was about 6 and a half kilogram)

I have a male dwarf retic. I always loved the look of a retic and was so happy when i found out there was a smaller version. Because a mainland retic for me is just to big and i life alone and don't want people to be there in case something wrong. The feeding respons is something i worked with before when i watched a person retics and mine is cool ones he knows there is no food.

Omfg retics can reproduce through parthenogenesis? That is so cool. Also they look like the babies we find here in Singapore and they always stay baby-sized!
