I love that you actually actively try to dissuade most people from getting the actually dangerous and difficult to keep animals that show great responsibility and true love for them
I wish other people were more responsible with animals. Too many people get animals on a whim or like they are buying new clothes and dont provide them with the life they deserve. Makes me angry 😤 Breeding irresponsibly is also done too often.
It's good to know both sides of it. While they are available and capable of being kept as pets, there is a huge commitment that comes with owning a reptile that can kill you with brute force. Some people think that animals that can be kept as pets, cant kill you. Or because they are a "pet" they are domesticated and wont kill you. I aim to own a black throat monitor, and that is a huge commitment. Clint is the only dude I know, that will lean heavily on the cons of owning these guys, versus hyping them up as this awesome pet.

What a gorgeous snake! “So maybe the fact that they, on extremely rare occasions, manage to swallow somebody shouldn’t be viewed as a deal breaker at all.” That’s definitely my new favourite comeback to friends/family who say my snakes are going to eat me!
Yeah no way my snake will eat me,a 1,5 meter corn will eat me. Also I'm native Indonesian those retic are common as hell. I even help local farmers catch the snake.
Love how calmly and respectfully you handle all the animals on this show, such a breath of fresh air compared to so many other reptile channels who love to play up the drama and talk very quickly and loudly.
And there are some who have a habit of talking with their hands and flailing wildly to emphasize their point...while handling the animal. Makes me cringe.
It's the perfect example of years and years of experience in breeding, handling (to learn when and how you can do it) and body language reading (the BEST skill you can get,imho). And snake like these can feel it.
@massimot.1112 its interesting, being a military working dog handler and trainer, how similarly that is to dogs. I handle and train dogs for patrol (so biting, chasing bad guys, etc) and explosive detection. They will always pick up on our nerves, anxiety, and if we have any hesitation as a handler (depending on the dog) they'll take full advantage. Its cool to learn snakes have that same vibe
@@DisDatK9 I think most animals can't pick up on emotion the way a dog can, but they can all pick up on energy level, if that makes sense. In my experience, a dog might even notice that you're sad, which is pretty unique to dogs. But if you've got a lot of energy, you're moving fast, talking fast, shaky hands, most animals are going to notice this, and not appreciate it. I used to work at a hair salon, and I tend to have nervous energy, particularly in a busy and loud setting when I have a lot to do - I got barked at by all our visiting dogs (except the service animals of course). 😅 Outside of work, animals tend to like me, but definitely not at work!
The comment "tragically cheap" is horrifically accurate. They are incredibly regal animals and should be priced as such. Many of the conventions I've been to have had them available for approximately the same price as ball pythons, and often times uneducated people are in attendance. I deeply appreciate Clint's non-bias assessments, and honesty, hopefully anyone considering one of these amazing creatures watches this!

I have a Retic and I will say it is like having a child and it is a lot of responsibility because these animals watch everything you do and one bad interaction can be a disaster and yes they will not hesitate to bite you if they’re having a bad day or if you disrespect them in anyway. A strong bond is a must with any exotic animal
I love how you approach snakes like this. You make it very clear that they're not really a good choice and that they CAN BE dangerous, but you also make sure to highlight that they aren't necessarily guaranteed to hurt you. Scaring people away from snakes and other reptiles is harmful to the hobby, but some people make the mistake of glossing over how harmful these animals can really be in an attempt to not scare people. It's so hard to find people who balance "this animal is capable of killing you" with "they're not likely to kill you".
It's cute how she really seems to prefer Richard to Clint. Could be in the editing, but she comes across as such a loyal snake chillin' on Richard's lap with her head on a pillow.
I have a shy young gopher snake and she is surprisingly hissy and skittish with other people, to the point where she'd try to slither from my bf's hands onto mine - specifically. If he put his hand there she'd pull away
I got to handle an 18 foot python named Katy as a kid. She spent 20+ years of her life teaching kids and never bit one. RIP Katy and Jim Dunlap. Thanks for giving so many kids a taste of Nature.
And this is why super dwarf/dwarf retics are best. 1. Manageable size 2. Simple care 3. Eats rats, no rancher needed 4. Worth it: a mainland in a 8-12 foot, 12-45 lbs (ish) body. Best decision I’ve made. Ask Reach Out Reptiles and/or Richard Bilbo (and more) for more info.
personally i'd say eating rats is too small, the perfect size would be big enough to eat rabbits because you can breed those yourself, all they need is hay and water and if you have fresh grass, they don't even need the water.
Agreed, i have a 90% jampea and she's wonderful. Still much larger than most of the animals you'll find from Reach Out Reptiles, but absolutely still in the manageable and affordable category. I'm looking forward to getting my next retic from them, i've only ever heard wonderful things
@@Kvs-vf9nt those are karompa locality, and yes, they stay 5-7 feet but they are really expensive. I’m talking about at least 50% SD cross animals here, though.
I agree with the "there are some creatures you just want to spend an afternoon with, or visit occasionally". I totally agree! I love so many reptiles, but I really just want some time with them, I don't need to own them. Just because you really love a creature, doesn't mean it's in either of your best interest for you to own them for life.

Richard makes a great point about vetting potential buyers. Retics are majestic, beautiful, and powerful animals. And they are not meant to be trifled with. There's a breeder in my area that I've seen at local shows that has beautiful retics. But I've heard conversations with them and potential buyers that were more than just concerning. I really don't think alot of breeders are responsible with making sure their buyers know just how massive these animals can get.
@CreativeHandle The reason a lot of retic breeders don't care is simply due to greed. You will find human greed within every economic system that has ever been tried. Bringing politics into this is unnecessary.

Animals I've gotten based on Clint's recommendations: Black and White Tegu, Blood Python, Banana Pectinata. No regrets. Still hoping for an Eastern or Texas Indigo one day.

Im currently making my beardie an enclosure.. one of the size im building, empty would easily be 500$ + for just the walls it was 65$ for the wood to make the box.. i still need to put it together then decorate it. My cousin's dad had one of these babies when we were kids, and he would take it to our elementary school for show and tells. That started my love of reptiles in general I think. A couple of years later, when the snake was somewhere around 15 ft long, someone found him completely constricted by the snake, but thankfully they were able to get him unraveled before anything too devastating happened. He gave the snake to a sanctuary after that. Scary stuff! I'm pretty sure he always handled that snake alone, and hearing y'all's warning about that definitely hits close to home. I haven't seen him in many years now, but he is still alive and well thanks to pure luck that someone walked into his house to check on him!
I always want one of these, until I see them like this. It's easy to forget how big they get. I love that you are showing these beautiful snakes honestly.

watching the way you do everything you can to not just handle the animals in a way that is safe for them, but also comfortable for them is amazing to watch
The way you talk about handling them reminds me a lot of horses. You don’t train your horses alone, their huge and can kill you even by mistake, and it’s crazy important to socialize them when young.
I strongly agree! My mom has a gelding and he usually is a sweetheart, but having been a stallion for six or seven years (not completly sure right now) I know that I need to make sure that I show him, that I'm the boss when in the box with him. And that might include a hit to the chest, or other "save" areas, that won't hurt him but show him "hey I'm here! Be careful!" We have some Iceland Pony stallions as well in the barn and the owners are always shocked when he gets a verbal, louder "ey!" Because his 700kg might kill me if he isn't careful

Because he's quite a lot heavier that me, he can squish me against the box wall. He has horse shoes,, with which he can easily break a bone. Or your skull. His head can break a nose (and actually did) Of course a horse wouldn't eat me. They're herbivores.

Agreed! It's appalling to see how many large constrictors end up on websites like 'preloved' or 'pets4homes' after people purchase them without giving it the proper consideration. I personally chose a jampea locale because as much as I'd love to say I could provide the proper care to a 20 foot plus snake the reality is that I couldn't, and I've kept reptiles since before my teens.

@@crystaltripi7574 Hi, thank you! You're right, there are alot of people breeding mainland retics as though they're corn snakes or ball pythons. It's shocking really because hardly anyone can provide the proper environment for a snake this large. It's a shame because it is damaging to the hobby.
@@crazychrislovesretics6790 or how upset it makes me when people realize they won’t get rich breeding bps so why not try to breed reticulated pythons after all cows and other morphs are still high dollar🤦🏻♀️and with certain people guarantee that you will get 50% cows with breeder packs makes want to throw up. I wish both parties would examine their choices more carefully before they cause problems for people who love their animals and did the proper research and hands on training instead of going in both eyes wide shut.

If you want ideas on large snake heater pads, you should think more along the lines of how heated concrete flooring works. Piping hot water through part of the enclosure stone/concrete can keep the surface temperature reasonably high enough. It's also important to know that the best snake enclosures that can house retics are like building fallout shelters, encased in concrete on the bottom with incredible metal frames. Keeping an animal of this size is like keeping a professional wrestler contained. They have incredible strength and will use that to try to escape their enclosure. So unless you were casually thinking of building a fallout shelter addition onto your house, maybe consider a smaller snake breed.
Sounds like simply giving the snake it’s own room would be easier. Maybe add a reinforced door with a window to see where snake is before entering. Although i have seen some videos where they allow the python to roam free around the home. Enough to where the python knows how to open doors.
purple is so adorable and the pattern of her scales is just beautiful. i don’t know if i’d ever have the chops to take care of a reticulated python but i’d love to meet one at some point!
I love hearing you and Richard talk about how wonderful they are, but also balance that with realistic expectations for what responsibilities you undertake when you commit to one of these snakes.

One quite like this was just recaptured in Japan. They searched quite extensively, but ultimately it was found in the attic of the appartment building. It even looked like the same morph I think.

You said something in another video that has just stuck with me! It was a video about the croc trainer who was bitten at a birthday party. You said “people don’t care about saving things they do not love, they do not love love what they do not know!” This hit me! That is exactly why I LOVED Steve Irwin so much and why I love so many reptiles and things most people would consider strange!
Oh, I must say that *THIS* is the video I have been yearning for, for the longest time! Even though I can't see myself ever personally owning a reticulated python, it is absolutely one of my favorite snake species 😍 so when I realized "Clint made a retic video!" it was a moment of unabashed excitement for me! When I see some of the largest specimens alongside a human, I can only think to myself, "Dear gods, that is a *LOT* of snake!" (Kind of like my reaction to the green anaconda in that other video.) It's kind of like the analogy of "the moth and the flame" -- where I'm drawn to it for being so large, powerful, and impressive, but it also represents a potential safety hazard, on account of those very same characteristics. Then again, you could say the same thing about lions, tigers, wolves, etc., and people love those. My eventual goal is to see (and interact with) a retic someday at a reptile facility or event, under the supervision of experienced keepers. One of the Earth's natural treasures, to be loved, valued, and treated with respect! 🐍
I have a wild caught retic right now, I rescued it from a bunch of farmers looking to eat the snake. It's pretty long I'm keeping it for now until it's wounds heal, not sure about the gender, but it's pretty chill

I swear this channel is the best! I come here every time I want to do research on new animals to consider as pets or just learn, and I love how calm Clint is while speaking to us. He is honest and really cares for our safety and that truly says something about someone. He makes the videos fun and entertaining and even does things like hold giant reticulated pythons so we can get a understanding of what we would be dealing with. You can also see in his eyes while he is making videos and speaking to us that he is really enjoying what he is doing and It's so rare you find that, its awesome to see not gonna lie. We love you Clint and we know this channel will keep on growing! ♡
Love my retic I work with him everyday he is now 6 ft.this is a wonderful video and is true main thing is training so they know difference in feeding time and handling time.
My family went to a show in St Louis today and my wife fell in LOVE with one of these. I told her it wasn’t very wise because Clint said so and she nearly threw a tantrum. So funny. It was an absolutely beautiful snake, but too big for our house!
I'm considering sending this video to my mum. She won't understand anything, but it would be nice to show her what snake I could get - but I definitely won't. Beautiful creature, but I will stick to my BCI (thank you for recommending this wonderful snake Clint!). At least I will not have to worry about being killed, just potentially injured :)

Anyone who has animals and has been around them long enough can tell by looking, this here snek is super comfortable and content when chilling on the sofa with Richard. That's a man who, you can tell, takes excellent care of his animals. It's also cool to see how quickly the big girl went from "what's this, where am I" with the tongue flicking a million miles an hour to "well I'm safe" and calmed right down with Clint as well.
I just met Richard Bilbo the other day! He was at the park with one of his snakes letting it get some exercise. He let me hold his snake. He just told me what to do and she had a blast crawling around me. He is a really cool guy!
I completely agree that they are TOO available. I believe you should have to apply to own a constrictor that gets 8-10' or larger. It's ridiculous that the average person can buy such things as retics and anacondas.
As much as I would love a retic I don’t think I’m ready even for one of the smaller localities so I went with a much, much smaller alternative a Children’s python. All the personality with none of the risks.

It's crazy how I've never been an animal person, and yet when I found this channel, I haven't missed a single video that he uploads. He makes talking about animals just so fun!
I would like to point out, key tip for handling snakes of this size. Socialize them when they're young, and when they WANT to socialize. Let them use you similar to a branch and it'll really help getting them out of the enclosure without tiring yourself out
