Dunkey talking normally: "SpAgHeTtI aNd mEaTbAlLs!!!" Dunkey talking about Mario: "Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate."
I went out and bought one an hour after this video premiered, without so much as thinking of getting a Switch or caring about the Switch when I first started watching. It's now my favorite device.
I'm here doing exactly that because my son is downstairs discovering this game for the first time and hearing his little shouts of glee are reminding me of my own playthrough, and that brought me back to this review that made me buy the console and the game.
I just want another game to be this good so I can hear Dunkey talking about with pure joy and excitement. No other video I rewatch as often to feel good
I think there are quite a few games he talks so passionately about. But the video that comes to mind(isn’t even about a video game lmao) is his Lalaland and Whiplash review. Maybe it’s because I love those movies as well and don’t really have anything like that about Mario
@@tigirao5926 saw this comment and it made me feel good cuz I just watched his 64 video before this one. My dad passed away in 2009 and he was the reason I got into super Mario so much. If he was here today to see what games like this have become I think he’d be very happy. I wish I could show him how good they are now 🥺
@@nintendude6477 no hes right though... No point in arguing with a braindead nintenbot thats username is litterally nintendude 64 anyways. If you cant see that nintendo has been releasing the same game since the 80's then Nintendo truly has you by the balls.
Gentlegeneral You act like no other company just copies what is loved and makes them money. Literally every company does this, be it video games, other media, etc. Like Xbox and PS4 can be accused of the exact same thing, movies and tv shows, you get my point. Plus, this game isn’t even similar to the other 3D Marios. I get you’re a troll spamming replies to comments, but I don’t get why. You should try this game though. One of the best games I’ve ever played on any console, and I didn’t even play the other 3D Mario games (but I did watch my brother play Sunshine when I was little)
Sadly...I'm sure other companies are looking at this game and thinking "You know....i bet Nintendo could have sold that cowboy hat in a randomized loot box for $1.99"
This review made me question being a sub to this channel. Such gushing praise for the absolute worst 3D Mario game. It has amazing controls and it never tests you with them. "Some of the moons will floor you" is he serious? Filler and recycled content everywhere. The number of moons isn't impressive when 90% of them are absolutely garbage. Every puzzle room is a pale imitator and the worst case example of something that has been done better and more engagingly in previous titles. You get moons for... Playing a song. You get moons for... Finding toad who isn't hidden. You get moons for... Getting moons... You can spend coins to buy moons. You can find them out in the open. You can find them hidden in boxes or rocks. You can find them in the most mundane places or repeated content again and again and again. My nephew is into Mario games and he found this one "boring" and "too easy". And he's fucking rubbish at games!
‘Other triple A studios look at and go “what are we even doing over here” I don’t think this was an invitation for square Enix to make whatever balan wonderworld was
This game review right here made me buy the switch just now, I come from a poor family and I am at a university studying but I still managed to get a bit of money to purchase the console and this game. I don't have a ps4 nor xbox because money reasons and I have an old pc that I play some games on it. I bought it today and once I started to play and watching mario, tears start to run across my face and I felt a huge amount of joy and excitement that I can't describe the feeling, made me remember the good old times of the n64 mario. This review alone made buy this game and console, thank you Dunkey thank you for showing what a game review is and should be like
and to add to that list -not forcing motion controls. It actually bothered me that doing some of the hat tricks and what not actually required you to shake your controller and you have no option to just map it to one of the buttons you have. 3 buttons share an action with another button. Just crazy. no one talks about this though. Not a huge issue but still there. Primarily homing cap throw and using spin throw reliably. I'd at least like to not have to spin in a circle for spin throw. However I get these abilities are "recommended not required." for me, it feels like it takes away from the gameplay elements. Maybe not for the rest of you.
I love listening to you compliment things. No idea how you do it, but your energy is so infectious. This sounds disingenuous, but I actually shed a tear while watching this. There's something so special about listening to people talk about something they are unconditionally passionate about. Its like, just for a moment, you get to dip your head into their world, while they show you all the special parts about it that they love. I hope this video is special to you, because it is very special to me.
Bob Ross won't matter. Nintendo fans won't recognize games flaws . Only 100% absolute praise. If you don't like the game entirely you are either 1) not a Mario/ Nintendo fan with nostalgia 2) game just "isn't for you" 3) a Nintendo hater. I really dislike how they force the flick controls with the game. You can only do those actions with shaking the controller. Really sucky when it's in portable mode. Aiming feels clunky without it but still doable. Unable to rekeybind etc. So you are stuck with multiple buttons doing the same thing. Other issues with the game, somewhat. Still a great game but I don't think it's a 5/5 like people keep saying. "it makes it a classic, a master piece. Doesn't mean it has to be flawless" meanwhile anytime a game has a few flaws "eh, 9. Still great."
Get off your horse. There are dozens of channels around for critical analysis. Dunkey is simply in a league of his own when it comes to conveying the emotional impact of whatever game he discusses. Respect what he's done, even if you don't agree what was said.
I love Dunkeys positive reviews, because even though they're not the most in depth, his enthusiasm is so contagious. Everyone i watch this i wanna replay Odyssey, he sells it better than any commercial ever could
Finally, FINALLY beat this game, as someone who has had Sunshine as my absolute favorite game since it came out. I gotta say, Odyssey pay homage to ALL it's old games, while throwing so many new things in the mix. I never thought I would say this, but Odyssey is literally the perfect 3D mario
4 years out and I still come to watch this because this video just...I love how much passion is in it. It's a fucking glorious depiction of appreciation and love.
I remember that Mario Galaxy was such a massive surprise of a game, that one of its cons was "music is too epic". Good Egg Galaxy STILL gives me chills.
originally i had that part set to jump up superstar but nintendo claimed the video, but then they also claimed the video for having galaxy music like a day later
@@videogamedunkey So you re-watch your own video and re-viewed the comments like, half a year later? Still great cause I also wanna know the answer. Nice reply Donk-born
Crazy how depressed this video makes me for not having a Switch, or any console. This is truly a reminder why I fucking love Dunkey. He's so passionate about games, and loves to talk about good ones, understands why bad games are bad. It's just magic listening to him talk about a game like this. Edit: Okay I got a Switch and Odyssey is one of the best games ever.
It depends--they've got like two sides of the doggo coin. This game lets you play fetch with the dog. BOTW lets you do tricks with the dog. Neither let you pet the dog :(
It was the most disappointing game I’ve ever bought. 0 challenge, and I hate the capture mechanic. I just want to parkour as Mario through challenging and fun platforming levels. I loved the idea of jumping into 2D segments, but they are breathtakingly pathetic. It’s literally run in a straight line and jump over one pitfall. I don’t think a toddler could die in this game. The boss fights are awful. There are no difficult levels or challenge at all. It seems the challenge comes from… deciding to try to creatively figure out how to introduce a degree of challenge into the game? Nah. I want the challenge to be baked in so I have a clear goal and it tests my skills to accomplish that goal. I don’t want… use hat, become frog, jump to high place, grab moon. That is boring and lame. Or… get from point a to point b. But don’t use platforming to get there. Throw crappy on a plane and fly over there unimpeded. No jumping necessary whatsoever. I had too high of expectations. I thought it would be crazy fun 3D platforming where you jump into a 2D wall and then do some glorious 2D Mario platforming. The 2D segments I can’t stress enough, are just walk in a straight line for 3 seconds and jump over one goomba. The end. I pray they don’t make a sequel to this and make an actual fun 3D Mario again, instead.
I still remember the first time I stumbled across your channel. It was at the end of november, 2020. I'd just had a really rough year thanks to covid (my grandfather had also passed away recently), and felt really down. Depressed, even. I was scrolling through RU-vid late at night, and saw this video in my recommended. I hadn't owned a Mario game in quite a long time, as I skipped the Wii U/3DS era. But I remembered loving Mario when I was younger, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I clicked on it, and god damn am I glad that I did. I genuinely cried at 3:56 (still gets me every time), because it made me feel some, if not any semblance of emotion. The passion you gave off in this video was incredibly infectious. It showed how much you adored this game, and I just couldn't help but be swept away by it. In the following weeks, I rewatched the video time and time again to the point where I almost got obsessed with it. I just KNEW I had to play this wondrous game, so I saved up enough money to buy myself a Switch and a copy of Super Mario Odyssey which was at a discount thanks to christmas. The day my Switch arrived, I popped in the game and started playing. It was the best experience of my life. Zero exaggeration, Super Mario Odyssey (and by extension, your review) quite literally restored my will to live. The amount of intricate little details, immaculate worldbuilding and charming dialogue made this just such a complete experience. It even helped me cope with the passing of my grandfather, as his funeral was still fresh in my memory. I 100% completed the game in about a month's time, and then did it all over again (online classes were NOT it as many of you may know). Super Mario Odyssey quickly became my favourite game of all time, and still remains there to this day. Thank you, Dunk. Thank you for helping me get through the darkest periods of my life. I can barely describe how much it means to me. -A dedicated fan.
You know what I like about you dunk? The love. Your videos are so full of love, so sincere, it reaches right through the screen and gets me in the feels. Don’t ever stop baybeeeee
Odyssey is the closest any game in the last 10 years has come to capturing the wild eyed optimism of youth that games like Mario 64 and the other greats of its era used to evoke time and time again. And this video is the most uplifting review of a game I think I've ever seen. Thank you, Dunkey, for convincing me to buy a Switch when no other marketing from Nintendo or IGN or anyone else had been able to. Thank you for convincing me this game was worth it.
I have two really good friends and one of my good friends said he doesn’t like odyssey because it doesn’t have enough Luigi. He went missing a while back, not sure what happened to him
So I've never been a big Mario or platformer fan. Those kinds of games just passed me by. Decided to give Odyssey a try after getting a Switch at Christmas. Holy shit, it's amazing. Played for 6 hours straight tonight without even realizing it. I can't wait to play more.
@@bareq99 I did finish! Put about 35 hours into it, got about 560 moons. Really really enjoyed it. Some frustrating bits near the end but really liked it overall
@@thrawn4388 Now I also have Botw, SSBU, Celeste, Dead Cells, NSMB Deluxe, South Park 1&2, Undertale, Bayonetta 1&2, Mark of the Ninja Remastered, and Cuphead
Dunkey can make one of the best reviews I've ever seen in 5 minutes while everybody else would need a 3 hour long video on Odyssey to even reach this level, and even then it probably would fail in comparison to this one.
I've ever played odyssey, nor do I own a switch but when dunkey says "wipe yourself off man, because you are dead" and that montage plays it brings tears to my eyes. I honestly am not sure why, maybe its because it encapsulates that feeling of love for a game that is hard to express or something like that, either way this video is a masterpiece
To this day there was nothing like running through New Donk City as Mario for the first time. The fact it was advertised the most (on the cover) and yet it came later on in the game, expecting you to recognize the visuals but you are so far in the game you literally can run around freely with knowledge. Like what amazing level design to know that we want to go crazy there and it’s available around when our skills ARE - GOIN - CRAZY
Mario and Zelda alone are worth getting the Switch for. They're like 5 games in one. A piece. It's like your getting 10 games out of only 2 games. The amount of content per game, the nostalgia, the music, the personality, the original content that only the Nintendo can deliver. These two games alone crush all other consoles. That's saying a lot. I haven't felt the way I feel when I pick up my Switch since N64 days. I'm fuckin' 27 now and I feel like a child. It's just happy and good. FEELSGOODMAN
Connor Drew Games aren't really limited to a certain age. If they like playing Dora and they're 31, that's fine by me although I won't really understand why they find enjoyment in that...
Zach Digital especially when he tells the beginning with the orchestra and T Rex. The greatest part is when he says "COME ON HOW THE F*CK CAN YOU NOT BE PLAYING THIS GAME RIGHT NOW!!"
The montage at 3:50 gives me chills every time. Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are nostalgic games for me growing up. To hear their music in this context is an emotional experience
This game came to me at the hardest point in my life to date, and its freedom and ability to just bring that emotion out of you the way Dunkey describes it was exactly the type of thing I needed most at that time. This game is a solidified part of my heart.
Dude I have watched this vid like 10times it’s so nice to hear, just a purely positive and fun video on this platform, the excitement and joy I get from watching this vid still after 4 years is great
I’ve watched this at least 20 times over the years. Only recently did I have the time to sit down with my youngest as he cheered me on to complete this game and finally get all the references. This is the best review to ever be published by anyone.
Here I am, a grown ass English teacher, watching this video with a smile on my face writing down a transcription to use in my English classes in Norway. The vocabulary, the phrasing, the enthusiasm, the knowledge of gaming, the feelgood-factor - it's that good.
a kid in my class just got knack 2 and i said OHHHH KNACK IS BACK BAYBEEEEEE!!!!!! and everyone looked at me weird and i realised no one i my class watches dunkey. It was the worst moment of my life
Worst Moment?? In the moments where you know you are truly unique and not one of the sheep out there....embrace it. You don't know how important it is right now but you will.
