But they aren't usually voice-acted past a couple words or grunts, which is also why the most recent Luigi's Mansion's dialogue was so strange. This is reminiscent of how Zelda's voice bothered a good number of people, they just aren't used to it.

Absolutely agree, its always been a really hard game to judge. Some of the worst parts are mandatory which certainly doesn't help (though I would have done them anyway at least once, being a completionist is frustrating). I think it could be reasonably agreed that it is the weakest of the 3D Mario games ( though considering its legendary siblings it's pretty understandable) but I think I like it more than Galaxy 1, 3D World or Odyssey. To be clear, I love those games too and I think they are consistently better but there's something really engaging about the pure precision and unrelenting nature of Sunshine. Even weaker Mario is head and shoulders above what most game franchises can muster on their best days.

Words cannot describe my hatred for the watermelon festival, and the pachinko machine level, and the lily pad level... and the chuckster level... and the balloon shooting level... and some of the blue coins... but despite all of the blemishes, I still have an absolute blast every time I play Sunshine. I dunno, as bad as they are, they aren't enough to distract me from how much fun the movement is, how great the music is, how pretty the environments are, and how unique the missions are. Maybe I'm biased since it was one of the first games I played, but it just has that weird charm that the other 3D Mario games don't have

they look kinda average imo, good for their time and stylistically very nice but it's not like they were massively ahead of their time. i understand nintendo fanboys can be a little delusional but cmon man

@@Scroolewse nah I hate the brown greenish realism that conquers todays graphics. Super Mario sunshine has the best color palette period. It is Justin’s gorgeous to look at. It shows how games are art very good

Yeah, just played it again recently. The graphics really hold up and were a huge leap compared to Mario 64

Yup literally the 2 most memorable things about this game for me was the god tier movement and the horrible structure of the game. Delphino plaza definitely an honorable mention. Most of my play time was just screwing around having fun with the mechanics. I came nowhere close to beating this game

In a lot of ways I agree. It's not a bad game at all, but there's something about Sunshine that never quite felt right to me, coming off of 64, and I think Dunkey hits the bulk of them with the mention of those "wonky" segments. Just strange, jarring moments where things don't quite work or just don't feel great doing. And I, for one, didn't care for the consistent tropical theme, really. Like, it makes sense, sure, I just... eh. I like variety in my Mario levels.

I did the same thing. Not sure how many hours I ran around that desert throwing cars at army guys in Hulk ultimate destruction. But it was too many. The same with Freedom Fighters I think if I hear it again I can recite the whole intro.

Shrimp Ross Freedom Fighters was so good. I'd play it and get stuck at one of the beginner mission as a youngin, and I remember the lightbulb moment of "Go to the manhole cover". Within the week I'd gone from only playing the intro and and the first mission on repeat to replaying the entire game. So. Damn. Good!

I remember when there was no saving games.

My roommate told me about having that problem with Wind Waker for months. (He was probably 6-7 at the time, at which age I barely knew what a video game was.)

There's a lot to Super Mario Sunshine that you can play for dozens of hours without discovering. I never found Noki Bay when I was a kid, because I didn't know you had to use the z button to stare at the sun while standing in that spot.
