The fact there's an option to change the language of the flowers without changing the language of the core game is honestly an overlooked gift. You want screaming italian flowers? Absolutely
Personally I love the flowers, they're so unnaturally positive and upbeat. Like every moment for them is full of wonder. You'll find one in a snowy mountain range and it'll gasp "Snow?!" in awe. Like it's not a completely stationary being who lives constantly in snow. I love them!
I love them too. I’m like, an adult male but I look forward to all of them lol. So many of them are genuinely funny or sometimes actually helpful. And a good excuse to help people figure out what to do or where to go, same with those little floating blue unbloomed petal things that spawn a line of coins pointing to where you should go when you touch them that are throughout the levels- I haven’t even seen people mention those. It’s fun.
Considering some would buy inspirational artwork, or just plaster motivational phrases around their house, I very much welcome these talking flowers and their upbeat attitude. Although my favourite moments are when they are in distress lol
I will always love how much @MaximusAlcarinque loves how much @woodsandhillsplc loves how much @UndertheMilkyway99 loves how much Dunkey loves Mario.
My heartfelt congratulations to Dunkey. Even in his ripe old age as an 80 year old black grandmother, he is still pushing out babies and bringing new life into the world
This genuinely feels like the spiritual sequel to Super Mario world, its been so long since a Mario game has brought this much vibrancy and innovation to the series. I personally think its one of the best Mario games weve ever seen
Few people talk about how each Yoshi's Island level feels like a self-contained story, an episode of a delightful kid's show, more like an adventure than an obstacle course. Your description of Mario Wonder reminded me a lot of the reasons I love Yoshi's Island, and I'm glad you concluded the video referencing that game. I was afraid it would just be another New Sup with a different aesthetic, but I'm happy it doesn't seem like it. Looking forward to playing it.
That is such a well-worded description of why Yoshi's Island looks as good and feels as fun as it is to play, and while I haven't played Wonder yet I can only HOPE that it's as good as YI.
@@albertnortononymous9020 Yoshi's Island does has its annoying moments, but the quality of the narrative is consistent. But you got me! I'll confess that I don't know if I would've ever finished that game without save states…
I still remember playing Yoshi's Island for the first time. It was a lifechanging experience. As much love as it gets I still feel it's an underrated gem. There are very few games I would call "perfect." Tetris is a hard lock. Yoshi's Island though? Maybe it's not perfect but it's so close to perfect I feel it's fair to argue it is. The beautiful spritework still stands to this day as some of the best of all time imo. The graphics were especially incredible for its time on the SNES no less. That 3D chip was such a wonderful idea. And don't even get me started on the OST. To this day random tracks from this game will suddenly start playing in my head. I also think it has the best fortress theme of any Mario game. There was a sense of magic to Yoshi's Island that few experiences ever quite match. It is one of the few games I ever gave a perfect score to.
I was playing with my 9 year old when we got the wonder flower that triggered the singing piranha plants and it was one of those magical gaming moments that we'll never forget. Maybe Mario is a baby game but I would trade a million big boy, paint-by-numbers, open-world slogs for a single game that can deliver a moment like that.
Recommend playing the newer Raymans too. I feel like a lot of influence is taken from those games such as enemies that sing in unison with the level and other slapstick humor.
I feel like this game is in some ways a response to everything that came out of Mario Maker. Players got such mileage out of the standard Mario elements and came up with such amazing designs, that Nintendo must have seen it all and realized that in order to make a new 2D platformer, they needed to do something truly unique and impossible to imitate. That's why I think there's so many brand new ideas in each level; an example of fan-content pushing the developers to innovate their own IP and bring back the "wonder" that was originally associated with the series from the beginning.
After years of having 2D Mario games being way too similar with each installment, I think this is something the 2D Mario genre DESPERATELY needed. The final result, being absolutely fantastic 👏
I don't see it, how does turning into a blob and an elephant revolutionize the Mario formula that has gotten so stale? Just because the environments are cutesy with singing flowers? lol
@@Parallelocam Its not about revolutionize the Mario formula is just about adding new and fresh ideas. I was already tired of the New Super Mario Bros. Series because they all felt like the same game, the aesthetic of the games was also very boring (they even recycled the music and the animations from the DS one). When Nintendo announced Super Mario Maker i thought that was Nintendo saying "okay make your own levels cause we don't know wtf we should do anymore", i legit thought that was the end of the 2D games. In Wonder every level feels unique and different from each other and has a ton of variety, also the animations and graphics have been improved, wich makes it the most visually pleasing 2D Mario game ever. Of course is not a revolutionary game but for me is definetly the best 2D Mario game since Super Mario World(at least in my opinion).
@@DannyRecioI played and beat the first world and admit I was too harsh. I still stand beside the elephant thing is dumb as hell, doesn't fit whatsoever and feels completely forced in lol
@@zorlucanoglu178 Kojima inspired the game industry to innovate and Nintendo is a byproduct of Kojima's intellectual genius; if it wasn't for him, Nintendo would have never been founded back in 1889.
It felt as if they took a bit of inspiration from the way Retro made Tropical Freeze, which is great. Overall a joyful title all around, looking forward to more
I think that this shows that even Nintendo realized that their usual flow of adding a mechanic and then expanding the mechanic from level to level doesn't work anymore, because that might no be what most people like about Mario. This game actually feels like a jump back in time to the old 2D Mario's where in every level everything was possible. Great on them for pulling it off so well
I unashamedly love the talking flowers in this game. They got quite a few laughs out of me. Plus one of them asks how your day has been going; such a thoughtful little flower.
The hardest I've laughed at the flowers was probably in Dolphin Kick Challenge II, when that one flower tells you to focus and take a deep breath before realizing, "Wait, we're underwater."
I keep expecting one of the flowers to tell me to gather as many love bits as I can, only to turn psychotic, call me an idiot, and tell me in this world it’s kill or be killed…
The distinction between Mario's Plot and Story was on point here. Never really had the words to summarize why I still "felt" something from the mario games, and that hits it perfectly.
This game is absolutely beautiful. It definitely breathes fresh life, personality, and freedom into the 2D Mario formula. The levels are so creatively surreal and imaginative, the character designs are cute and fun. And the new power ups are so cool.
The flowers annoyed me at first but fast became one of my favourite parts. In addition to the wonder seed novelty I was excited to hear what the flowers would say next and it was always funny, silly and heartwarming.
I love your comparison of the difference between story and plot. Really puts Mario games in a new perspective for me which gives me a new appreciation for the games. This is coming from someone who respects the impact and history of Mario, but doesn’t really care about platformers.
"Everybody says that Mario is for babies, but I played this game with my baby and she fell asleep right away." Already a masterpiece of a video! Also, congrats!!!
If anything, I'm glad we're seeing a (relatively) new name in Shiro Mouri taking hold of a top shelf series at Nintendo and it actually translating to a great, refreshing entry to a very mature franchise. Gives the feeling that the old masters are passing the flame
I like you enthusiasm but I'm a little confused by this. NSMBU was a directorial debut, so was NSMB2, NSMB1 and Wii were directed by the same guy and his only works to date, Odyssey was the solo directorial debut from Hayashida's protoge... Like, can it even be said that the old masters are the ones passing the flame when they gave it up to other young prospects decades ago, some of whom failed? Mouri clearly knows what he's doing but he isn't like some wunderkind that they finally found to be worthy of the Mario mantle
when Dunkey said "they turn you into a Goomba and it becomes a battle of survival" it hit me in the heart because it reminded me of what becoming an adult feels like in our world.
My wife and I have been playing through the game and it really is a testament to how creative it is that we're still deeply interested in what each level has to offer. It's been awhile since we've played any video game that kept both our interest for this long.
The sheer level of creativity and childlike wonderment in Mario games is genuinely heartwarming and nostalgic to the old days of gaming I grew up during. Games made to BE GAMES. Not movies with gameplay. Those are fun too. But Nintendo, still believes in pure gaming. Which is fantastic as well. Their legal department is a bunch of friggin' Nazgûl, but the developers are keeping that flame alive.
It might surprise you that there are literally tens of thousands of Mario fan games and projects that Nintendo's reportedly super aggressive legal team are fully aware of and fine with.
@@PlayMadness if that’s true, I think that might just be a numbers game. Like, if 500 new fan games go up one month, and Nintendo only DMCA’s 300 of them, (because that costs time and money,) and then that happens every month for dozens of years, then yeah you’re gonna have thousands of games that haven’t been taken down, but it’s just the ones their legal department hasn’t gotten to yet Edit: I’m down to be wrong though. If there’s really ones that Nintendo are confirmed just cool with then that’s actually hella interesting lol
@@PlayMadness Also, just because Nintendo may choose to ignore a project doesn't make me wrong. And it's not just fan projects. They are spiteful in litigation. Remember the hack seller Bowser? Went to prison, and was sued for 10 MILLION for selling modding tools for hardware that they own. He'll never be able to pay that back, and they know it. They ruined his life over something stupid. Just a mega-corp pushing a kid around. They are cold-hearted to their biggest fans and have been for a long time.
It's really the animations for me that breathe so much more life into everything compared to the older titles. This is probably one of the best looking games with a cartoony animated artstyle ever.
Maybe the Castle and Boo Levels have the art direction they have because it establishes the motif that Bowser and his children are above all else and don't need to have any ties to the kind world that Mario and friends live in. Also, congrats to you and your wife on having a baby!!! I wish you and your family a life time of happiness and much good fortune.
My son was born in 2018, so I remember using the kickstand on my Switch to prop it up and play Let’s Go Pikachu with the R Joy-Con while rocking him to sleep in my left arm. 12/10 experience, congratulations to you and Leah!!
It’s incredible! I so hoped they would find a way to reinvent the 2D games and Mario Wonder is just such concentrated fun. Every level is fun in its own way
I'm 30 years old Japanese but still play Mario. This game brought me back to those good old days. The journey was like a roller coaster and I got excited what's coming up next.
The ONLY thing I feel like is missing is that PvP multiplayer chaos that Mario games have. I like the current system too, but it would be awesome to be able to do both
The part with the wonder seeds is so true. Sometimes the levels even without the seeds were already so much fun and creative that when I forgot a seed I sometimes didnt even notice, just at the end I was like "Wait, I didnt get it?"
Honestly, this has been one of the most fun and creative Mario games in a while. Every course is extremely fun to play and explore, and the Wonder effects are a welcome change of pace. My only complaint is that excluding the final two courses, this game was extremely easy. I 100 percented every level leading up to the final Bowser conflict first playthrough and 100 percented the entire game a few days later. For reference, I often find myself struggling with the later pre-bowser courses in Super Mario Bros. 3 and World. So I could only imagine how easy this game is to long time veterans of the series. Despite that though, I do highly recommend it to anyone looking for a Mario game closer in design philosophy to Super Mario Bros. 3 and World. It won’t challenge you as much as those older titles, but compared to the New Super Mario Bros. games from the past few years, it is a welcome breath of fresh air.
You really never know what to expect in mario wonder when you pick up that wonder flower. The sound when you pick it up, and the anticipation on how it’s gonna change the level always makes me brimming with excitement.
Bro congrats to you and Leah and your baby, I'm happy to hear everything went well. I'll be picking up Wonder for my bday later this week, too. Lots of love.
I knew when I was watching the trailers that the talking flowers probably would have been a deal breaker for me. Luckily, Nintendo knew that and let you turn their voices and/or text bubbles off. Incredible feature.
I love this game. It reminds me of 3D world. Both gameplay and design. The level choice is like a better version of 3D world. Also, its just full of new ideas and has a theme and goes all in on its weirdness like 3D world went all in on the cat theme.
As a former software engineer, I honestly do wonder how the heck they were able to cram so many unique ideas into all the wonder flower parts of each stage. I feel like that had to be a nightmare for the developers.
as a hobby game developer, i can see that the complexity of programming is reasonable, but the level of drama is so off the chart it looks like it is impossibly complex
I felt this way about Yoshi's Island, that a lot of Mario games can be separated into worlds but I couldn't tell you a favorite level per say, 3D World was probably the closest to actually having varying levels that felt entirely different concept-wise from one another, Yoshi's Island was the original for me though.
"Ah, the nostalgia hits me like a ton of bricks! Mario games have been a beloved part of my gaming journey since childhood. It's incredible how Mario continues to bring joy and adventure to players of all ages. Can't wait to dive back into this iconic world! 🍄🕹️🌟"
it's great to see a new mario game that inspires creativity come at a time when our beloved dunkey is experiencing such an amazing point in his life. It reminds me of that one time Dunkey beat Sky in smash
When I was a smallish child of 8yrs old, I had already seen the movie Halloween and Friday the 13th. And hell, I beat LJM's Friday the 13th NES game. But nothing prepared my body for the final boss of Yoshi's Island. I thought the blinking arrows meant "stand here". I remember tossing my controller and crying.
Not enough peopel mention how good dunkeys audio is in his videos. Its not easy making a video where every sound has a very intentional decibal level that adds to the video. Well done on audio to whoever is editing these.
Legit I feel like this game took the best elements of all the 2d Mario games and put them into 1. The cute/wacky worlds of Mario World SNES, The funny transformation/side objectives in Yoshi's Island SNES, the difficulty of Mario 3, the different and unique appearance of Mario 2. Its so fantastic. I'd recommend this game to literally anyone who has ever been a 2d mario fan even once in their life. Playing through this game made me feel nostalgic to so many periods of my life where I was playing one of the games mentioned above, be it as a 9 year old playing Yoshi's Island on my GBA, being at my aunts house as a 5 year trying to find hidden exits in Mario World, exploring the interesting/different world of Mario 2, and the frustration and me outright shutting off the game like 100000 times whenever I died playing Mario 3. Total masterpiece. Also Dunkey, you can turn off the voices for the flowers
Excellent review and straight to the point. And hell yeah - shout out to Yoshi's Island. After Super Mario World, for me that game epitomized the SNES's days on a great positive note. Same as with this SM Wonder with the Switch as we move along to the supposed next - gen Switch 2.
I grew up playing Yoshi's Island with my mom. I've got a kiddo of my own now and I'm excited to play this with him to continue the circle of suffering. Thanks for the videos. Good luck with your little one.
Dear Dunbly, youve been my favorite youtuber since your Ziggs champion spotlight featuring frank. I too knew it was gonna be a good game when they busted out the singing piranha plant level on the second level.
I honestly think Super Mario Odyssey turning out to be a huge success paved the road for them to try a similar approach in Wonder in that they're free to try new game mechanics instead of being forced to play it safe with gameplay as other big studios with established franchises make their design teams do.
