its so much of a goof fest there are like 3 boss battles that just happen, the first is 2 jester that just show up at Booster's place and now you're fighting them. then there is a Flyguy who is just watering his plants, which just so happen to want to kill you and you cant just leave i guess?😆 and then the cake that comes to life with no explanation, to where even the chefs who made it dont know why.🤣

This game really did invent Bowser's entire personality for the next twenty years. He did not have one prior to this. He was a huge angry monster that kidnaps a princess. He was, in a very literal sense, the antagonist of an arcade game in the local pizza parlor. Every moment they've had Bowser speak for more than four sentences in a row, this is the personality he gets.
@@borderline67"although this game did invent Bowser's personality". That's all he said in the video. Nothing wrong with expanding on a point. That's how conversations work. Why are you so salty?

Woah! Kyle is here! The Paper Mario remake is coming out tomorrow soon. So much nostalgia this year. 2023 is shaping up to be an epic year for games, movies, and pop culture.
I adored this game as a kid. My first RPG. Maybe I played Chrono trigger before this? But I definitely did Mario RPG before FF7. Years later I'm almost 40 and loving the remake. It's just good damn game design, and that's timeless.
Roughly my story too. I had a lesser known game called Super Ninja Boy that probably nabbed my "first RPG" trophy, but the battle system was more like Double Dragon than a turn based game like Final Fantasy
I played other RPGs before the OG, but I didn't really understand them until Mario RPG because I was too young. This was the perfect prequel for young me, that brought me into the powerhouse that was FF7 shortly afterwards. What a time to be alive, then and now, while we could experience all the imagination and spectacle from OG to re-master/make. Cheers.
"This game did invent Bowser's personality." It really did, and I'm still amazed by that. A Mario RPG spinoff made by Square was what solidified Bowser's personality all the way to the present day. The character we all know and love got his true start from this game
It's insane how thoroughly they established it right off the bat. A villainous brute who loves being evil like you'd expect, but who's actually a little insecure and genuinely wants to impress Peach, and to some extent, even Mario. A tyrant who acts ruthless toward his minions but does ultimately care about them. No future games really even add anything to that idea, they just worked off of it because it's so good. Even in the movie released this year, it still sticks! Bowser is an awesome character and it's thanks to this game.
I’ve been praying for an earthbound remake for YEAAAARS. I always thought a claymation style would be cool for it, but I wouldn’t mind if they went this route.
As someone who never played the original release but hear so much about it I'd love for this to be real. Although now I'm super geeked for a prospective Chrono Trigger remake
I never knew I needed an earthbound remake before seeing this video. I would fork over TONS of money just to play a 3d/claymation/Mario rpg style earthbound game with tweaks and new additions
i remember discovering this game for the first time in a random list of snes roms and just having my absolute mind blown that it even existed without me ever having heard of it. playing it was like some fever dream or like maybe i found some insanely huge fan game that was created and i was just never in the know. smrpg is a masterpiece

They absolutely nailed the remake. It looked exactly like my memory of it was, and the new features (which they've blended very well in the world) kept it fresh
Artepiazza are masters of SNES remakes. They did excellent remakes of Dragon Quest 4,5,6 on DS + Romancing SaGa 2,3 remakes (which are much better than FF Pixel Remasters).
Ty soooo much for making a video on this game, it's criminally underrated and the community wants it to do well so classic mario rpgs may get a new game in the future ❤
3:36 "I love this guy cause he looks like my baby" is the last thing I'd have though Dunk would say which is 100% true. Proud of this man. Enough to make a grown man cry.
Especially seeing him at his low points in those old mario 64 videos years ago compared to now it makes me so genuinely happy for him to see him with someone as wonderful as Leah and now having their own child it just makes me want nothing but the best for his new family
I've never seen Dunkey support an RPG this passionately before. It's great to see and I totally get why. I never got to play the original because it came out before I was born, and now that I'm finally able to, I can say it's incredible. The outlandish designs of the original characters, the vibrant, colorful worlds, the iconic music, and the streamlined, easy to understand battle system are all fantastic. Nintendo really nailed this remake.
I got to play the original via the Wii Virtual Console in like 2014-15. I got it because I thought it was the main basis for SMBZ. It was not, despite taking inspiration from it (I immediately recognized the Axem Rangers when I met them in-game). However, that misconception-fueled purchase gave me an experience I would never forget.
In a surprising turn of events, I find myself witnessing a side of Dunkey that I never thought possible-the passionate and romantic endorsement of an RPG. Known for his comedic and often satirical take on video games, Dunkey has built a reputation as a charismatic and humorous commentator. However, in a recent video, the gaming icon revealed a deep and unexpected affection for a particular role-playing game. As the pixels danced across the screen and the epic soundtrack filled the room, Dunkey's usual wit and sarcasm took a backseat to a genuine and heartfelt appreciation for the RPG he was exploring. It was as if a new love had blossomed in the world of pixels and polygons, and Dunkey couldn't help but express his admiration with fervor. His commentary took on a more tender tone as he delved into the intricacies of the game's storytelling, character development, and world-building. Each compliment was delivered with a sincerity that resonated with fans who were accustomed to his lighthearted banter. It was clear that this RPG had captured not only Dunkey's attention but also his heart. Perhaps it was the captivating narrative, the immersive world, or the compelling characters that fueled Dunkey's newfound passion. Whatever the reason, witnessing this unexpected romance between the gaming icon and an RPG added a delightful twist to his usual content. Fans eagerly embraced this softer side of Dunkey, celebrating the unanticipated connection that had formed between him and the virtual realm. In the end, the video served as a testament to the diverse and unpredictable nature of the gaming experience. Just as in real life, love can bloom unexpectedly, and Dunkey's passionate and romantic endorsement of this RPG left an indelible mark on the hearts of his audience.
I really like how dunkey points out the sheer length of most RPGs and how much commitment they demand. I like most RPGs (I really enjoyed Persona 5 Royal last year and I loved Octopath Traveler 2), but my word do I wish they were just generally shorter. This is another reason why I love Mario RPGs, EarthBound or Chrono Trigger. All of these games are quite concise and can be beaten in like 15-30 hours. As a result, they also have a ton of replay value by comparison. I've replayed every Mario RPG like 10 times at least. And though I really liked Persona 5, I don't see myself going for another playthrough anytime in the foreseeable future. It's another reason why I liked Sea of Stars a lot. I spent 35 hours with that game and then I had done everything. Perfect length, if you ask me.
I never would have anticipated someone saying, “I love this guy because he looks like my baby” in reference to a turtle in Mario RPG would be the thing that convinced me to play a remake of an RPG that’s over a decade older than me, but here we are.
@@andrewodinson3726 Dunkey saying that made me so happy. After going through hours of horrible posts on twitter, a wholesome dunkey video always lifts my spirits.
@@turningmememachine7256 fam you gotta get off twitter, reddit too prolly. Then a whole week. Then a whole month... soon you can get off entirely. All that free time back, all that psychological health back.
I had a Sega Genesis (and later PlayStation) as a kid, but I played Super Mario RPG in the 90s at a summer camp I went to. Nothing special, imo Super Mario Bros. 3 is the gold standard for the old Mario games, no doubt.
Im 33 and this is one of my favorite rpgs, loved the atmosphere, story, characters, mini games. Was gold as a kid and its gold now. One old man to another :)
I was filled with absolute joy when I saw the remake of Super Mario RPG being announced. I remember playing it as a child back in 2014/2015, and still have fond memories of it
I loved this game sop much as a kid, and the remake filled me with so much joy and nostalgia. If they did Chrono Trigger like this I would explode from glee.
Replaying the first couple levels over and over as a kid is so relatable. I especially had this experience with GTA3, just watching the opening mission cutscene over and over again and driving around aimlessly
This is me as kid in Super Mario World 1-2. You get yoshi, red shell for Yoshi to spit fire, kicking turtles for that 1-up, Charging Chucks, and even more 1-ups in the underground. If I was a kid playing games in 2017, I would probably keep playing the Great Plateau over and over again in BotW.
Thats me and Neverwinter Nights. I only ever beat the first part and then, idk I just want to repeat it with a different character or lose interest entirely. I think its the same thing that has people playing Vanilla WoW in 2023.
Super Mario RPG has always been my favourite game of all time. The did such a good job with the remake, and as you noted, the remastered soundtrack is just as killer as the original. Such good bops
Artepiazza are masters of SNES remakes. They did excellent remakes of Dragon Quest 4,5,6 on DS + Romancing SaGa 2,3 remakes (which are much better than FF Pixel Remasters)
You review nails everything. The pacing, the style, its not too long, the MUSIC. Even before this release I get some of the music from this game stuck in my head. And yes Earthbound needs to come next!!!!!
Hi Dunkey. I really enjoyed this video. I prefer your videos where you talk about your past or childhood experiences with games, and show games you like to play and talk about features of games you like, for example, background art, character design, gameplay, like in this video. This was entertaining to watch and a helpful recommendation. I find joy, entertainment and prefer type of videos like this. My other favourites are prank calling videos where you goof around and have fun pranking other people, being silly while in the background you play a browser game or show relevant images.
I hope they kept the optional "secret" boss fight against Culex in Monstro town, I kept a save file just before that fight so I could load it up and jam to the sick ass battle music
This is what makes me come back here. The understanding of video games in it's historical context, combined with the sentimental feeling of: "Yes that's what playing a videogame felt or feels like". It's just pure quality right here.
There's so much stuff to do in this game that's just different from the usual talk/battle/navigate menus in JRPGs--minigames, weird scripted sequences, platforming, puzzle-solving, exploration, it's all there
I played this game through 25 years later. But this time my kids (7&5) are watching. And I am watching them react to all the memorable moments that are near and dear to my heart. Teared up multiple times, and cannot recommend this enough. 10/10. Dunkey hits the nail on the head with this one. shorter game but 100% excitement with no filler.
Dunkey needs to make a full album where he recreates entire versions of video game songs using only his mouth and voice as the instruments, its always been one of my favorite parts of his videos whenever he does it.
Hi Donkey) I find your channel too late, but allready view most of your reviews 3-4 times (except games i want to play one day so try to avoid any spoilers :)). Its really a pleasure to see how you, from one side, evolve like reviewer, and from other side, you kept an open mind and didn't change your view of what really good games should be. I try to find somebody like you to watch more "donkey-like" content, but failed) Because no one else has such passion and love for games, such a clear understanding of the essence of gameplay and the importance of the plot, such a sense of beauty and aesthetics of what is happening on the screen, this manic attention to detail and references to a million well-known things and even one’s own personal life... Your reviews are simply the best the internet has to offer these days. Thank you for your hard work! I'm really excited to see your new creations ;) Best of luck brother.
Dunkey with any other franchise is nonstop jokes and, if they goofed, hammering them for it. Mario? An absolute word smith of an essay with pure honey rolling off his tongue with each sugar-kissed sentence
An already delightful RPG gets a proper remake that does it justice. Maybe it wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but I loved every second of it. And I'm glad that dunkey was a fan as well.
@@sandyk9300 No they're not. There's a few songs that are medleys or heavily changed remixes of Mario 1 and 3 tracks, notably the Bowser fight song and the Mario's Pad theme, but the vast majority of the soundtrack is original.
Every track in this game is amazing, and I'm so glad you appreciated it. I think the composer that made them, it was like her first time as lead? She also wrote the music for Legend of Mana too
Dunkey to be honest I’ve always been really impressed at how you can finish a game so fast and post a video on it less than a month later. Your energy to get through that many campaigns a year is actually crazy
@@ConnorHammondvery much, yeah. If you know what you're doing, I won't be surprised if you can finish it under 5 hrs, even if you're casual about it. Secrets might take you longer tho, and there's a LOT of them

Dunkey videos are always so cozy to watch and it's because he's so passionate about what he talks about. Never stop as long as you continue to enjoy doing this, Dunkman.
@@its_elkku135 It seems like he only makes videos he really wants to make rather than pumping out content just to pump it outage. I like NakeyJakey because of this too
Oh my god. When Dunkey is talking about the style of the game at 4:24 he switched to the original game's soundtrack for a few seconds and then switched it back to the remake version. So subtle, but so good!
Great review! I particularly enjoyed your in-depth analysis of Super Mario RPG and your candid views on RPG games. Your point about the commitment required to see these games to their end was well made. Love the enthusiasm! Keep up the good work.
The only thing Nintendo would do with the series at the very least would be to release Mother 3 worldwide, but given how they are, they probably won’t do it until in a year after 2026, which would be over 20 years after the original game’s release. Think about it. In less than 3 years, Mother 3 will be 20 years old and it’s still Japan only. I can imagine that the big salt rub on the wound would be is to release it on GBA Switch Online, but again Japan only. They did it on the Wii U so it’s not the first time they cockblocked the rest of the world from officially playing it without relying on fan translations.
Super Mario RPG is one of my favorite childhood videogames and one of my favorite games of all time. The Remake is excellent and I'm glad Dunkey thoroughly enjoyed it.
This game opened the door to turn based RPG's for me. I loved the OG so much and this remake managed to recapture all the fun I had back in the day and give it a face lift while adding some quality of life changes. Enjoyed every second of my time playing this game.
I loved this game as a kid, unlocking all the secrets while in elementary school and talking about it, or even reenacting it on the playground. Now that a really faithful remaster is out, I'm reliving that joy, but with my elementary school son. It's effort in games like these that make the media more than just a game, but an art, a cherished memory.

This is a GREAT commentary of what being an adult gamer in a market saturated with great games is. And it truly makes me appreciate SMRPG more, which I made a short work in a long weekend of because I have played this extensively before.
“There is not enough time in life to play just the RPG’s from this year. You kind of just have to pick one and hope you picked the right one for the next five years” This statement is both haunting and reassuring because now I don’t feel so bad for never beating all the games I’ve purchased.
Yep, i picked Starfield instead of Baldurs Gate3 and i enjoyed it,solid 7/10 imo, but i was also bed ridden and almost paralysed with a bad back, so for 2 weeks, Starfield was my life and it helped me, but i was aware of its flaws and gave it a 7/10 myself before seeing the internet's reaction. I am now 100 hours into my Baldurs Gate 3 playthrough, 9.5/10 easy! If i can finish it before my 2 weeks vacation for the holidays, i am starting Tears of the Kingdom during christmas time, which should last me a few months from the looks of it.
You are definitely not alone in that feeling, friend, there’s so many games that I’m like, “wow! This looks so cool, if only the average human lifespan was 10,000 years then I’d be able to play it.”
Ironic that a marketing tactic used to keep people playing longer actually drove people away. Don't get me wrong, I don't wanna throw shade at the bigger games because they're sometimes made by people who care way more than they're paid. But if people being sick of longer games means they're more appreciative of what they have and they're less inclined to be mindless consumers, I'm all for it!
I love the soundtrack for this game! I especially love how they incorporated Kendrick Lamar's 2015 smash hit "Alright" into the tracklist. A bold move but it pays off!
This gave me the right amount of nostalgia and I can't wait to play this game all over again. It's exactly how I remember it was and the remaster just looks and sounds perfect to me. This was my jam in the 90s. I remember patiently waiting for the one copy at my local video store to be returned so I can finally rent it. It was one of my favorite gaming memories of that decade!
@@JorganGJorgan im definitely more of a ff guy, I never actually owned a snes when I was a kid, but this is coming from someone who played chrono trigger and Mario rpg within the last 10 years or so for the first time: they are incredible games. No nostalgic tie in for me at all. I have yet to actually play earthbound.
Just finished streaming it not too long ago, it's been worth every penny to finally play this again especially with how much more they pumped into this version. Glad to see you enjoyed it as well! Anyone else wondering if Dunkey beat 3D Culex?
I also really enjoyed how simple and short they made this game. I've been playing so many long rpgs, and this one was a nice break without too much commitment or story to focus on. There was still story, but not an insane amount that I had to keep up with to truly enjoy the game. The music and characters were also amazing.
It's cool seeing people discover this game--always one of my all time favorites. It just oozes charm the whole way through, even now, which I think is impressive. Not all the games I liked as a kid are as good as I thought they were.
This is my first RPG when the time I was a kid just learn how to hold the controller. I'm not realizing this game is such a gem until I grow up and played bunch of games. easy story, fun combat, hilarious cutsense. It had what standard RPG had but lighter. And I think this is the true idea behind Mario RPG. They want to make an easy chilling RPG experience. This game was teaching me how to enjoy a RPG game before I step deep into video game rabbit hole. I feel lucky this is my first RPG experience.
Your dunkviews inspire me, my gaming habits, and my channel a lot Dunk. Super Mario RPG was for me what Paper Mario was for you as a kid, so I love getting to hear your take on it.
As a 30 year old man with a family I can say that I get about 5 hours a week to myself, if I'm lucky. The chance to play something this nostalgic from my childhood to the end would be a pretty great experience.
I understand you. There are plenty of games that I would like to play, but when I see that I have to spend at least 50 hours to complete the game, I just ignore it
Thank you for this Dunkey! I was waiting since this game came out in 1996 for your review to decide whether or not I should try it, but after hearing your praise of the music that goes babababa ba ba gee ba baaaaaa, I think I'll buy it!
Im soo glad you enjoyed this game. It's one of my childhood favorites that defined the games I like today as an adult. Also, if you ever find the time to get them, the secrets and easter eggs are really fun
As someone in much of the same situation as dunkey, not being a fan of long RPGs and not having played Mario RPG before, I was blown away by how good this game was as well.
This is the most appreciative dunkey has been to RPGs and as a fan of them I feel heard. Dunkey should have babies more often, they make him a nice guy.
I still haven't played this yet but my excitement for it is so high, this looks like a truly proper well done remake of a classic, I hope you can get to Sea of Stars next that game is phenomenal on all fronts
