In Europe we had a just all-stars cart to start with then later got a cart that was all-stars and world combined.

a interesting fact about american mario 2 though? it actually WAS mario 2. Not so widely known was that when mario 2 was in development, before Myamoto was the man that could do no wrong in the company and had complete creative control, he origonally wanted to make mario 2 vastly different than the original. but then nintendos owners went "no, more of the same game that was super successful" thus his origonal work on mario 2 was scrapped. BUT was reused for Doki Doki Panic. so in a round about way we ended up getting the real mario 2 over here. Look it up!

Aladdin and the lion king is way better on Sega Genesis. And yes i was a SNES kid and made fun of my cousin and the Genesis all thru the 90's. Genesis does have better sports games hands down no contest.

Yeah so innovative, platformers just like in the NES era and JRPGs just like in the NES era.

@@EnwardHiggins what's it like to be so cynical? I've never tried it because life is better when you appreciate things more. I'm guessing you probably weren't even born before home consoles leapt out of the 1980's and showed us things we never thought possible.

@@EnwardHiggins In terms of storytelling, gameplay mechanics, the hardware, and just the overall replayability, the SNES was such a step up from the NES. Like there are very few NES games I go back and play, but the SNES has dozens I can go back and play again today.

Yeah, you can't go into town or buy anything before then. All you can do is hope the crows drop cookies when you beat them, and that could take a while to get a full inventory from.

The same can be said of any console in history.

Limitations really do help an artist shine. The SNES is a perfect example. :)

I love gaming but have trouble enjoying the classics I loved. Earthbound is a rare exception, but my god. I've got an emulator and nearly every SNES game on my phone and I just find myself getting sad quickly. 😂

I skipped the sound stone once. But the time and energy it takes to do so really outweigh the tiny reward.

Yeah we have All Stars, and the later All Stars + World here in North America as well.

AFAIK, for PAL territories SMAS+W was only available as a console bundle.

Can also confirm that there was a release of the 5-in-1 Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World in the U.S.. It was the game that was bundled with my Super NES in early 1995, and _might_ have only been available as a bundle, but it exists.

While the GBA translation definitely improved some key aspects of the translation, they did retain a lot of Woolsey's translation to some degree or another. Why they felt the need to change that *one* specific, iconic line was, indeed, very disappointing.

They even changed it the Pixel Remaster

Thing is, I actually like the localized look far better! It even matches the aesthetic of the area where you find him!

The same can be said about the Revenge of the Sith video game which had levels based on deleted scenes and early concepts

Yooooooo Super Bomberman 2 had THE BEST multiplayer, glad someone else remembers!

While I eventually got a SNES, 3 or 4 years after release, I definitely know that feeling and appreciate that others experienced it too.

My last comment was deleted I'm assuming because I included source links to external websites, but Doki Doki Panic wasn't a reskin. Aside from being on a different platform, there were a bunch of differences between DDP and SMB2. The lost levels also wasn't just cut content, the levels were based on the arcade game Super Mario Bros. Vs. The reasoning given for going with a completely different game was that it was both too hard, and not different enough and may alienate western audiences from the franchises. Essentially the same dev crew worked on all three games though (SMB2, DDP, SMB2LL). You are correct that Miyamoto wanted to explore vertical scrolling, and a prototype was shown to him which became the basis for DDP using Mario assets, so an argument could be made that DDP started development as a Mario game, but according to the information that I could find (statements and interviews with Miyamoto and Kensuke Tanabe) the prototype wasn't engaging enough and shelved until the ideas could be retooled into Doki Doki Panic. I wouldn't call it a false myth, more a murky misunderstood one. Information is out there, but it's difficult to pin down an exact timeline and over time the origins of these games have become distorted.

Unless it was a bootleg, no, you didn’t. It was a Famicom Disk System game and wouldn’t fit into an NES at all.

@@sharmat1611 well, i can attest to saying, it was a very odd shaped cart. Bootleg as it may(ChinaTown, NyC in the early 90s) i get exposed to quite the bit in the last 4decades. But i recall getting a chance to play it for as short a time as we had it.

The SNES has a 15-bit RGB palette which is a hell of a lot of colours. It can only display 256 colours per layer at a time, so you may be better off finding the palette from a specific game or a specific scene from a game.
