Hot on the heels of my special on LWB executive saloons, here is one that I missed out. And if you've got a Lexus you'd like to see reviewed - let me know!
But for now, this is a 2010 Jaguar XJL with the 510hp 5L V8 - worth the risk?

I had a 2010 XJ but it was the 3 liter Diesel and it was fantastic. Mine was a portfolio spec so had all the extras on it and nice leather on the doors not and wood inlays as a jag should have. It was a great car and despite the comments from a lot of people it never had any mechanical issues at all (I bought it 2nd hand and believe the original owner probably got everything fixed before I bought it) as a used car its a brilliant buy they have depreciated so much that you get an insane amount of car for your money. Also for a big car it handles and drives pretty well, I even did a track day in mine becuase my 911 had broken down and it did reasonably well and I got to overtake some very surprised sports car drivers as I went buy in a car not much smaller than my first flat!

I had a 2011 xjl 5.0 s/c RWD, drove it 50k miles. What a car! Handles way better than its size, much more of a drivers car than BMW, Mercury, Audi - light - way better than a Maserati. Effortless power and speed. Eats brakes, replaced ac compressor, water pump, steering rack - I had a warranty. Had very cool jag option wheels - flat dish - on grey/silver. 1200w Bowers and Wilkins stereo was unbelievable. ZF six speed I prefer to 8 speed, power always accessible. Might go look for a 575. Or XJL-R. Service is expensive consistent with cars like this., even if you buy cheap. Beware. But an awesome ride that you rarely see. Looks depend on color and wheel choice. Buy one with FULL service records, new brakes, water pump and get a warranty. Smokin fast, pulls like a freight train from 70-130mph.

As an owner of the facelifted XJ from 2016, I have to say, that Jeremy Clarkson was absolutely right: on twisty roads it‘s not short of a masterpiece. The one in the video doesn‘t seem to be the LWB model, you can see that more clearly at 6:48 minutes. The rear door should be noticeably longer. With its light weight and wider front axle, the car doesn‘t know what understeer is. It‘s brilliant.

First time I learned about these was about 3 years ago when I saw a couple go at a BCA auction for less then £20K (back then I was looking for a W218 Mercedes CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake). They both had been part of a limo fleet and only had about 15,000 miles on the clock; they were absolutely immaculate. I believe they are incredibly good value cars if you are in that market segment.

Love this car. Fun fact: Its a ZF steering rack. When you throw in the German brakes and suspension components this car is some 44 percent German by parts content. Makes these early versions of the last gen XJ a great drive. Oddly the Supercharged version with 470HP had bigger brakes with 15 inch rotors on the front.

@@davidspropaganda You may not have the problem (and seem to keep your luck of not having any real issues), but lots and lots of other people have experienced the complete opposite, especially Range Rovers. To be fair Jaguar seems to have been getting better in terms of reliability for the last five years, but they appear to have difficulties on justifying their price tag. They're more expensive than the Germans (albeit more equipped) yet with lower build quality and also less luxurious. Their infotainment system is also frustrating to use, unlike the Germans who seem to always get it right. People tend to give reviews when they have negative experience. And considering that you had had multiple positive experiences with the brand, I suggest that you go on those surveys and share that experiences. If more people do that, maybe, just maybe it would reduce the negative stigma about the reliability surrounding the JLR group.
@aabidamn
@aabidamn 4 года назад
@@davidspropaganda I really like the XJ and X type design of that era, hated the S-type, though. The good thing about the Ford era Jaguar is that they shared a lot of components with Ford, so cheaper parts are available as long as you buy the Ford parts. Once you buy the Jaguar stamped parts, the price can go a lot more expensive. The bad part of the Ford era Jaguar, is that they shared a lot of interior parts with Ford, so they can feel cheap once you know they were using Ford parts. Lol As for the X-type, a friend of mine in the US had to replace the fuel pump. Parts weren't that expensive cause he bought the Ford ones. Unfortunately the "engineers" that designed the car decided that in order to access the fuel pump, you need to remove the fuel tank. Moreover they also think that it was a good idea that in order to remove the fuel tank, you need to remove the subframe of the car. So changing a fuel pump that normally takes 30minutes tops on Japanese cars, would probably take a whole day for his X-type because they had to remove pretty much the whole backend of the car, which ultimately cost him more than $1000. Make sure you use more than good quality fuel to prolong the age of the fuel pump in yours!

I've got 160,000 miles on my S type R now ... second S type in a row (first from new) ... no issues with either and each has done the Nurbugring and Oulton Park respectively when my Elise and Caterhams both had issues (crash and HGF - guess which was which). This one feels like it did from new and beside regular sensible maintenance (including suspension after riding the curbs hard at Oulton and standard air con/heat exchanger work) both have been totally free from major issues. The best cars I've ever owned - apart form my S1 Elise which I've had for 20 years and had only that one hiccup with HGF on a European jaunt and hammering around the ... oops I've given away which one it was now haven't I? Love the big Jags and mine have been pretty much faultless. Keep up the good work Jay - man after my own heart :)

I was gonna pick up one of these, but as with the kia stinger its just a bit too long for my liking, I might get one one day, but i picked up a XE S instead with all the toppings and i made the right decision, and for my driving its much more economical than a 1.6 turbo juke.

Agree with other posts. Ford may have signed the cheque when the AJV8 was being developed, but it was Jaguar engineers submitting the expense claim.

Hi JM, I enjoy your reviews. I always liked the XJ, beautiful classic exterior since 1968, the acres of wood inside, only its reliability made me not consider it for my car. I went for the classic, beautiful "Magnificent 7" E 38 740iL instead, owned one from 2005 to 2017, I doubt the XJ would be less reliable. On the contrary, my current E 320 Bluetec diesels 2007 and 2008 have been utterly bulletproof reliable. That 740's 4.4 lt v8 had just 282 HP, I can imagine how more powerful it would be with the 510 of your XJ! Let's go back to this XJ, though. I like the modern styling too, but wish they kept the quad round headlights. ALso, just because it is a fast car is no excuse to eliminate all the GLORIOUS WOOD VENEER from the Dashboard which all lesser XJ's have.

Do you rate the 3.0 V6 Diesel version? Would love a supercharged V8 but my mileage just wouldn’t allow it. Been looking at BMW’s (F10 535D, F30 330D, etc.) but love the way these look and seem like better value for money. They are something a bit different and special too, plus everyone thinks they’re much more expensive than they actually are.
@tavirosu25
@tavirosu25 2 года назад
I mean the 3.0L diesel is a common engine used in Discovery, Range Rovers etc. There are a few issues with it, but nothing major. Thing with the XJ is that you won't have any electrical issues like Range Rovers have. So pick the 3.0L XJ as it's a better option for motorway driving.

jlr reliability came about when they were owned by ford and used garbage bmw engines, since they were bought by tata motors, they became quite reliable, and for me atleast owning a range rover 5.0 autobiography and an xjr has been the best combo. benz s class will honestly always be the leader in luxury saloons but the xj to me will always be the slick one and classy as well.

The Jaguar supercharged V8 (AJ133) wasn't Ford derived. Yes it's built in a section of Ford Bridgend engine factory, yes it has parts with FoMoCo stamped on it, but it's not designed by or derived from any Ford engine
