I think that Christopher Reeve's ability to be both Clark Kent and Superman without turning into a cartoon caricature of either is amazing and underrated. The audience knows he's the same guy, of course, and Lois has her suspicions, but it never comes across forced or contrived when he switches from goofy, lovable Clark Kent to cool-as-hell Superman in a matter of seconds. I came to the realization recently that seeing Superman as a child when it first came out (totally giving away my age, but whatever LOL) started my fascination for tall, dark-haired, handsome slightly mysterious men. He really was born to play this role and Margot Kidder was born to play Lois Lane. I'm so sad that they're both gone from us now, but I pray that they are together, in peace and love.

Clint Eastwood would have just shot Lois after the first time she badgered him. Smoked a cigar while riding a flying horse. Hanged Lex Luthor while the theme from "The Good the Bad & the Ugly" played. Punched Perry White in the face for making him do 'paperwork'. Then told every one his name was CALLAN-EL. Traded Superman's iconic red boots in for some janky dusty cowboy boots, with spurs. I can't even go on...

We all do *sigh*. I was so heartbroken when he died, but then there was that little glimmer of comfort in knowing he was truly free of what had to be unbearable physical and emotional pain, even though he hid it well with the amazing strength and heart he had. I was just as heartbroken when his wife passed shortly after him and wonder if she didn't just sort of give up the will to live so she could be with him. I know she loved their children and never would willingly leave them but when the love of your life dies after such a struggle...well, I wouldn't blame her for wanting to be with him. May they both rest together eternally.

Christopher Reeve’s accident was most surly a burden to him and his loved ones. But to the rest of the world he became the perfect example of what a Superman in the real world should be. He fought for so long to cure his Paralysis while at the same time Sharing inspiring messages with the world. There’s a video of him moving his foot very shortly before he died. In that one moment he proved that paralysis might be cured one day.

I was talking with him a few days before, and he was his usual self which he could be only if already knowing you, as his true personality was to be just a born reserved person, observant. He was always so careful, nothing could tell of what would happen, he barely survived then and there, and I believe for a purpose too. His loved ones needed him much longer, and all those brave ones dealing with handicaps he came to represent as Public figure. But I had never the chance to see him again in person. Missed him way before he passed away. Many millions of people did, not only because his career, but because he was a very likable person.

Watching Reeve body language and posture change from Clark to Kal el is amazing physical acting. He did something like this in the first film when Clark arrived after Supermans flight with Lois. Clark takes off his glasses, voice changes, body language shifts, starts to tell her, has second thoughts, and reverses back into Clark persona..very impressive. But then, Chris Reeve went to Julliard so..

I think the other does the character of Lois more justice. It was always a little ridiculous, that probably the foremost investigative reporter in the world, couldn't discern Clark from Superman when she was the closest to both. The window jump and the gun in Donner's original version, isn't about trickery, it was about Lois doing what Lois would do, pursuing her hunch, and uncovering the truth. Getting to the real him, and wanting him to be truthful with her. His reaction when she reveals it was blanks in the gun, is just pure admiration for her, which is again exactly right for both characters and their relationship. RIP Mr. Donner, who brought me here (and to many other clips today).
@sandal_thong8631
@sandal_thong8631 Год назад
That was for casting. And it doesn't make sense that Superman wouldn't know whether he was hit by bullets or not. I do think Lois should have figured it out for herself, like the scene where she doodles on the newspaper and jumps out the window.
@venividi8523
@venividi8523 Год назад
@@LFire12 I think it makes more sense for Superman to reveal his identity rather than have Lois expose it, because the crux of the movie is about the battle between his selfish desires to be with Lois and him protecting Earth as Superman, so for him to reveal it is to start his arc of ignoring humanity meanwhile Zod takes over, otherwise it wouldn't be his fault cause Lois found out herself.

I'm torn by this scene, I prefer the Donner version because it shows Lois' resourcefulness with the blanks as opposed to the clumsiness of Clark by tripping on the rug. But the Donner version was a screen test with both actors being distant and almost uncomfortable compared to the Lester version, which had the advantage of time allowing the actors to become closer and familiar. Also there is one thing I believe this version does better, which is to show the vulnerability of Superman. The Donner version Clark was more closed off and judging at Lois for shooting at him, but this version we see Clark in a more open way, not as the bumbling reporter with no friends or the immortal and confident god Superman, but as the real man inbetween those identities. The vulnerable and regretful way he speaks whilst holding his glasses is one of only a few times this character gets to be honest with others and himself, this the Clark who sits on his own in the fortress of solitude hearing the whole world at once and maybe regretting his role as Superman.

@@michellemckillop2931 Funnily enough, Henry Cavill tried this out once in New York. He strolled out in public wearing his Clark Kent disguise (glasses, suit, everything) and nobody actually recognized him. PLUS, he even straight up opened his jacket to reveal the Superman logo underneath and STILL, nobody recognized him. He tweeted about his experiment later saying: "The glasses are enough!" Famously, Christopher Reeves once ate at a diner in his Clark Kent outfit and nobody batted an eye. He came by sometime later in his Superman costume and suddenly everyone wanted a picture. Seriously, you know what they say. If you want to hide something, hide it in plain sight. If you want to hide a tree, use a forest. If you want to hide a man, make that man as unremarkable as possible and watch him disappear in a crowd.

This version of Lois is by far my favourite: she points out how stupidly see-through Clark's disguise is, she is resource-full, brave, grateful, inquisitive and she helps Clark out a lot. Most other versions of her are such whiners.

I remember watching these movies and enjoying myself. Superman, Star Wars , Raiders of lost Arc and many others. Some were exciting and some were just nerdy, but you were taken away for a couple hours of the harshness that life can bring you. No hidden messages except for products and no politics or causes, unless you went to see a movie with that theme in mind. I miss these movies even if they were a little corny at times.

I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion, but I prefer the theatrical cut of Superman II to the Donner cut. There are some things the Donner Cut does better than the Lester cut, but overall, I think the Lester cut is the better movie. It felt like a romance movie with Superman and told much more story, something the Donner cut didn't have a lot of.
@DarlingNikki2
@DarlingNikki2 4 года назад
I've also thought Superman 2 was top-notch. Superman was the introduction, but Superman 2 delved further in and is one of those wonderful sequels that matches the power and impact of the first movie (if not surpasses it) and draws people further in.

Both the original 1978 and II were the best. But the Donner Cut of Superman II is the best in terms of being more in line what Richard Donner had envisioned.
