Christopher Reeve was a class act all the way. I had the pleasure of meeting him once. It was about the time Superman 3 came out. I was on a ski trip in Colorado with some friends. One morning we heard a commotion outside the lodge and went to check it out. People had recognized him but it was obvious he had tried to enjoy some skiing incognito. His hair was different and he had on dark glasses, but at his height and physique there was no blending into the crowd. Later in the day he came into the large lunch hall at the lodge. The place was pretty crowded and I was at a small table by myself. When he got through the line and started looking for a seat people were flocking around him and he was obviously uncomfortable. As he walked by I motioned to the other chair at my table and said he was welcome to it if he liked. He thanked me and sat down in the corner where the crowd couldn't fit. They slowly dispersed. We sat and ate quietly for half an hour or so making small talk about the weather and condition of the snow. I was dying to tell him how much I loved superman and my favorite movie of his Somewhere in Time. I would have loved to get an autograph too but kept my cool and acted like he was any other stranger at the resort. I excused myself and said I was going to hit the slopes again before the weather turned bad which had been forcast for late afternoon. He asked if I minded if he tagged along. Of course I said he was welcomed to join me. We took the lifts to the very top and skied together for a couple of hours. He then stopped at a sign to turn onto a slope that was way beyond my abilities and I told him I wouldn't survive if I went that way. He laughed and thanked me for the company and we parted ways. One of my fondest memories from my college years. He was a genuinely nice human being, even after his tragic accident. He is truly missed.

Christopher Reeve's wife was also just the nicest, sweetest, most loyal and loving person. She died young from lung cancer, despite never having been a smoker, orphaning their son at only 13. Life isn't fair, is it? 😢

As a big fan of Superman and these movies, gotta say I appreciate you just getting into the movie and suspending disbelief as opposed to picking every little thing apart. You definitely get all the reasons the Christopher Reeves Superman movies are so special.

As a child I wanted to be Christopher Reeve when I grew up. I saw him as an image of what a man was supposed to be like. And I’m not talking about having super powers I mean his character as a person. Also, I loved Superman 3. It was funny and entertaining. Superman 4 is umm well it’s ummm it has Christopher Reeve in it that’s the best thing I can say about it.

The chemistry between Clark and Lois was very heartwarming

In one of the great mistakes of my life, in 1994, Christopher Reeve did an appearance at a sci fi convention near where I live, but I decided not to go because I figured he'd be back since he was doing conventions now. Unfortunately, a year later is when he had his accident and was paralyzed. I really regret not meeting him because he'll always be THE Superman to me.

I'm Brazilian and SUPERMAN for me is the best superhero movie of all time! I watched it at the cinema when I was a child and I still feel like a child today and I am enchanted by the action scenes and special effects! For me it will always be a wonderful and untouchable classic.

You mentioned Christopher Reeve's likable reputation. There's a story about him that we were told, touring Mackinac Island several years ago... As others have mentioned, the 1980 movie Somewhere In Time was filmed on location on Mackinac, so Reeve was there for a few weeks. While he was there, the island had a showing of his 1978 Superman, which he attended. During the showing, the film's audio went out. So Reeve stood up and delivered all of the film's dialog, until the audio was fixed.

I really liked Jen's reaction to the magic kiss at the end. Margot Kidder and Christopher Reeve were great in these movies. For some reason the orange juice part always stuck with me. It's such a small detail but goes a long way in showing Lois' idiosyncrasy and how Clark plays off it. The running joke is that putting on glasses makes him unrecognizable but I love Clark's mannerisms and clumsiness. Hiding in plain sight. Also, Gene Hackman scene "Superman, thank God! I mean, get him!!"

To me, Christopher Reeve is and will probably always be the best Superman ever. And in real life, Reeve was a super nice guy too!

Superman III is a quite different atmosphere of a film but still worth the watch for its best scenes.

I think the scene at Niagara Falls where Superman flies past the Canadian flag may have been a nice tribute to Joe Shuster the co-creator of Superman. He was the artist who gave Superman his look. His fellow creator of the character was the American writer Jerry Siegel.

Okay, Jen... Since you are so smitten with Christopher Reeve, you MUST see 'Somewhere In Time' which came out in the early 1980s. It is a tremendously romantic film with the stunningly beautiful Jane Seymour as his love interest. It is based on a novel called 'Bid Time Return' by Richard Matheson. As far as the Superman films with Reeve, there is 'Superman III" with Richard Pryor, Annette O'Toole (as Clark's high school crush Lana Lang), and Robert Vaughn. It is a fun film, but it's more Richard Pryor's movie and Superman/Clark Kent is in it. As for 'Superman IV: The Quest For Peace', it's a mess. It had a story by Reeve, and he was really passionate about the themes of the story, but between a small budget by the studio that made it (Golan-Globus, which made quite a few schlocky low-budget movies in the 80s & 90s), the director not doing a good job, and other factors...it's not very good. Just warning you now. It was Reeve's last performance as Superman. However, he did return to the Superman Universe...in season two of 'Smallville', in the episode "Rosetta", Reeve played Dr. Virgil Swann, a quadriplegic scientist who helps young Clark Kent (played by Tom Welling) learn about himself. 'Smallville' had many characters played by 'Superman' film alums...Martha Kent was played by Annette O'Toole for most of the series run, Margot Kidder also made appearances, and the voice of Jor-El was played by Terrence Stamp (General Zod). It's a pretty good series if you ever get interested. As usual, it was fun watching you swoon over Reeve (I'm a straight guy who had a man-crush on him for most of my life...I get it!). Looking forward to the next reaction!!!

Christopher Reeve was a real life Superman 🦸‍♂️ all that he went through and never quit. My Dad used to fly me around the house as a kid wearing the costume, great memory. Broke my heart that my hero in the 80s accident happened in my home state of Va. Great having him in episodes of Smallville with Tom Welling. The best part of Superman 3 is him fighting with himself, not trying to spoil that, but that whole part of the movie is great and in 4 that Lois remembers is awesome too.

The whole thing with Superman in this movie was a conglomeration of decades of comic book madness. Superman was introduced in 1939. For four decades (at the time of the making of these movies), countless comics were made about him; at various points Superman, Lois Lane, Jimmy, Supergirl, Superboy, and Krypto the Superdog all had series ongoing, and he appeared in other heroes' comics as well. So how do you keep him fresh and interesting for so long? The writers were constantly giving him new, newer, strange and stranger and stranger powers. Originally he was 'faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to *leap* tall buildings in a single bound!' By the mid 1950's he had super-hearing, super-windy-breath, super-freezing-breath, super-suck-up-tons-of-water, x-ray vision, heat-vision, shapeshifting (by flexing his facial muscles he could change his appearance), Amnesia-inducing super-pheremone kisses (he had to kiss Lois frequently to make her forget every time she figured out his secret identity) and on and on AND ON. There had been Superman movies and shows before, but these were the first of the modern era of superhero movies featuring state-of-the-art big budget special effects. But clearly the writing was seat-of-the-pants and they gave little consideration to how to carry forward a sustainable set of sequels, much less a full franchise like Marvel has been doing lately. How do you one-up Superman spinning the Earth backwards to alter time? A flying cellophane 'S' symbol, I suppose. At least it's unexpected.

Is it weird that I keep on tearing up every time I hear his music and see him saving someone in the first one? I was 3 or 4 when the first Superman came out.

The issue I had was Superman is a guy who has to treat the world like paper 24/7. He has perfect mastery of his powers as not to hurt people (this would be his ultimate weakness during the diner fight) but he trips over a rug? I figured that he loved Lois so much, he was legit nervous around her and it got the best of him.

I always liked the fact that the tv show Smallville cast the actor who played Zod in Superman II as Jor-El... the actor played Chancellor Valorum in Star Wars I: Phantom Menace

My older brother and I saw this in the theater when it came out and the scene where Supes was crushed by the bus, my brother and I truly thought that he had died! General Zod, Ura and Non were great characters to bring into the sequel. Lex Luthor had me and my brother laughing our asses off! Gene Hackman is a legend! You need to watch his movies "The French Connection" (1971) and the sequel (1975). I'm so glad that you got to enjoy this film! 📽❤

I saw this at a preview for newspaper delivery kids (I was one) and it was the most amazing audience response I've ever seen. They cheered and applauded non-stop and literally jumped up when Clark shows up at the diner. An audience of Jimmy Olsens.

There's a version on the story for Non that is quite horrible. In it, Non was a member of Krypton Science Council and Jor-El's mentor. He was happy that Jor-El actually surpassed him in scientific knowledge. And he was the only one who would support Jor-El's theory on the inminent destruction of Krypton. For that, they captured him and lobotomized him entirely, leaving him next to mindless.

One of my favorite Christopher Reeve film’s is titled “Death Trap”. It also stars Michael Caine. It is a mystery thriller based on a stage play.

When Sonny Bono died while snow skiing because of a tree collision, there just happened to be a rash of snow skiing incidents involving people and trees, back in the 1990s. 😢 Musicians are wary of travel by airplane because so many of them have died because of crashes, going all the way back to Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, and Richie Valenz in the 1950s. However, equestrian incidents don't happen as often. Actress Kaley Cuoco had one, but rather than ending up in a wheelchair as Christpher did, she of her legs was crushed and the bones were replaced by titanium. They did such a good job, that you would have to know where to look to see her scars. Her recovery period is why "Penny" is missing in a few episodes of "The Big Bang Theory". The character "Penny" had a boyfriend who wore a "Superman" costume inspired by Christopher's! 😊

Happy Birthday to Terence “General Zod” Stamp!

This movie had the one thing i always wanted to see when i was a kid: ACTUAL SUPERVILLAINS! So-called superhero movies and tv shows always went the cheap route. All we got were bank robbers and terrorists, with the occasional mad scientist. But this movie actually WENT THERE!

My favorite Superman movie. Great Ken Thorn score and his adaptation of themes composed by John Williams.

One of the minor gripes I have with evil Kryptonians in Superman movies is they're often portrayed as arrogant for nonsensical reasons. Take the line, "they need machines to fly," in this movie, for example. She utters the line like it's unthinkable that humans couldn't fly when she only found out she could fly a few hours ago herself. If she'd criticized the helicopter as primitive, that would've made more sense.

He's brilliant as Clark Kent. Lois had him figured out and not only did he avoid turning into Superman in order to help her... But by the end of the order SHE ends up having to pull HIM out of the drink. Totally brilliant!!! Love it!

Everyone liked Christopher in the industry. No one had one bad word to say about him Robin Williams was his best friend and it destroyed him when he died.

Terence Stamp who played General Zod,was the perfect choice for that character.Did you see 2006 Superman Returns? That story basically picks up what happens after Superman gives up his powers in this movie.

This was the best sequel ever

Christopher Reeve filmed part of "The Rose and the Jackal" at the Stone Mountain Scenic Railroad near Atlanta. A friend of mine worked there and was the actual engineer of the train that Reeve's character was supposed to commandeer in one of the scenes. He backs up everyone who talks about how nice Christopher Reeve was in real life.

You actually can trust Luthor… to be untrustworthy. 😁 The later sequels are not as beloved, but I hope you will still watch. Reeve is great in all of them.

A few years ago a friend of mine wanted to buy a new Guitar. He had stopped at a music store in Bozeman Mt and the staff spent a good deal of time with him. He left without buying anything. He checked with the music stores here in Billings but couldn't get over how well he had been treated in Bozeman. He decided to take a trip there and purchase one from them, As we approached Livingston our conversation turned to Margot Kidder and how much we loved her portrayal of Lois Lane. Livingston had been her home for many years. When we stopped for lunch we commented on how cool it would be to accidentally run into her. He wound up buying a new guitar and we came home. The next day the news announced that Margot had died. It was a sad day for both of us. I never did ask him if he thought of her whenever he played it. To me she will always be Lois Lane.

I recommend seeing both "Superman III" (1983) and "Superman IV: The Quest For Peace" (1987)!

Superman has so many powers in this movie that he never had before, and never had again. 🤣

Others have mentioned Somewhere in Time as a good Christopher Reeve period-piece romance. You also might want to try out The Aviator (1985), a survival adventure/romance with Reeve as a mail pilot in the 1920s, and Deathtrap (1982), a murder mystery.

Terence Stamp who played General Zod would go on to portray Jor-El (Clarks father) in the tv series, Smallville. Also Margot Kidder, "Lois" and even Christopher Reeve would make a couple guest appearances on Smallville.

The original ending of the first film was Superman releasing the rocket into space, which explodes and releases the Kryptonian villains. But they needed to finish the film on time, they used the original end of the second film. They couldn’t afford Brando, so they decided to use Lara instead of Jor-El, which is just *one* difference compared to the Richard Donner Cut.

Where's Superman III? Come back and finish this series. It's a must see.

You would probably enjoy the Lois & Clark tv series. It focuses on the love story between the two.

The wedding issue actually hit the stands the same week that the show had the wedding episode. Currently, there is a show on the WB (and I believe on HBO Max), "Superman and Lois", which just finished up its second season. Lois and Clark are married and have twin sons (fraternal twins). The chemisty between Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch is terrific, and the production of the show is far and away better than any other superhero series on the WB. It is close to, if not equal to, theatrical quality in writing, visual effects and pretty much everything else. The episode where Lois realizes that she is in love with Clark and not Superman (she didn't know at the time it was the same person) was really endearing (season 1, episode 11 - "A Brief Reminiscence In-Between Cataclysmic Events").

My friend and I quote this movie all the time. One of those rare times when the sequel is as good or better than the original.

You really should watch "Somewhere in Time" where Christopher Reeve costarred with Jane Seymour. It is a love storage you will never forget. The British elderly lady who was a main character had a short part and the producer told her, "You only have 4 words, but everyone will remember those words". The were, "Come back to me." Please you must see it. Such a love story as you have never seen before.

The other thing is, the fortress of solitude computer probably should have had some way to detect if a threat has arrived on Earth and it should have alerted Superman. 😲

Hey Jen given your love of Romance and Christopher Reeve you should probably watch Somewhere in Time(1980). Maybe not a well known film to react to but you would enjoy on your own time.

Superman II was by far the best Superman film.

A great Christopher Reeve film from the Superman I & II era is "Somewhere in Time" (1980) It's a time travel/romance with a very sad ending. I won't spoil it any further.

Superman III isn't quite as good as the first two but it's still enjoyable, especially if you like a light-hearted Superman. One sequence in particular is considered among the best in all the movies. It was a good decision to watch the Theatrical Cut for this one. While some people prefer the tone of the Donner Cut, it really isn't a complete film and thus not as suitable for a first viewing.

When those who dislike Superman snapping General Zod's neck in "Man of Steel" make reference to Christopher's "Superman" not being a killer, it is pointed out that in this movie, in this scene, he apparently does let the trio die, if not outright kills them, just by exposing them to the very cold temperatures outside, including under, the "Fortress of Solitude"! 😮 By the way! A contemporary of Superman's known as "Doc Savage, Man of Bronze" also has a "Fortress of Solitude" up there! In the comics Santa Claus is based up there! Somebody at "DC" eventually realized how crowded it must be, so Superman's home was relocated from the frozen Artic Ocean to Antarctica! Being on frozen land there's no cold water for victims to slide down into to their doom! 😮

There's a deleted scene where at the end of the movie the three villains are arrested and seen in handcuffs. This is important because without it, it looks like Superman kills them which goes against his code. I've even heard there was supposed to be a comedic scene where the depowered General Zod ends up in the same prison with Lex Luthor. However this was never filmed as Hackman had left the project and refused to work for director Richard Lester.

To my knowledge, he is physically and dressing. He’s just doing it so fast you don’t see it.

I loved seeing the people of New York, uh Metropolis, willing to confront the Kryptonians.

As this is the old-school version of Superman (Supes was revamped in the mid 1980s) in 1969 scifi author Larry Niven wrote an essay titled "Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex" detailing the problems that would arise from Superman having sex with a human. If you can find it, the essay is fairly hilarious.

Loved your reaction to this. It took me back to my childhood and made me appreciate this film again (understand I was burned out from seeing it so many times), when this movie was new, and it, along with things like the Star Wars trilogy and the Indiana Jones original trilogy - ruled the cinema.

The final fight in the Lester/theatrical cut isn’t in line with Superman power settings. I explain it by saying the Fortress amplifies his powers.

This is my favorite Superman movie.

Fun Fact: Christopher Reeve was so dedicated to staying in shape for the role that his physique changed notably during production, leading to some scenes been redone for continuity purposes.
