My father took me to see Superman The Movie back in when it opened in 1978. I was about 5 years old. I remember that we had to wait a while because the projector malfunctioned and someone had to repair it. I cried and my father bought me a candy bar. A few hours later we saw it. Thirty years later, I took my father to see Superman Returns. I drove him, bought him a candy bar, and we had a great time watching the movie. His memory is now fading away but I will never forget that special moment of taking my father to watch a brand new Superman movie.
I remember seeing this in theatres goin crazy. I was six years old and I had just recently seen all of the Christopher reeves superman movies and had no idea they were gonna use this music
+sultaa86 I heard that if Christopher Reeve didn't pass away, they were going to have Christopher Reeve in one scene on this "Superman Returns" film in his wheelchair as a person passing by saying something like "oh Superman, please save us from Lex Luthor." Unfortunately, Christopher Reeve passed away before the director could include him in a scene.
This is the best opening to any superhero movie ever made That opening motif with Brando voiceover and then the first few beats of the main theme give me chills
Exactly Best movie of 2007 Bryan Singer was accused of sexual allegations Legendary Pictures also did Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) and Where the Wild Things Are (2009)
Yup....this was basically a thank you note of a movie to Christopher Reeve and Richard Donner, and there's nothing wrong with that. At least us fans of the originals have this, because let's face it, Man Of Steel is GARBAGE
It was. Brandon Routh was great, to me at least. He was so close on Christopher Reeve’s version. I thought the story was great, great supporting cast too!
Fun Fact: (Bryan Singer) the director of this film wanted Christopher Reeve to make a cameo appearance in Superman Returns, but, he passed away as they began filming, so he decided to dedicate this film to him
@@guypeate3628 if you seen Man of Steel, there is a scene in which Superman (Henry Cavill) that just before he flies into and destroys the ship near the end, you can see Reeve’s face very very briefly placed over Cavill’s. It gave me chills when I saw that
When I first saw this film in 2006, it had me at the beginning of the Krypton theme. I was enthralled. Then it captured me for life with this epic opening and the rest of the movie. I love you, Superman Returns. Haters gonna hate; this movie reawakened the sleeping Superman fan inside me from childhood.
I remember this like it was yesterday. Went with my friends from college. I was crying and all were staring at me weird😂😂. You cannot compare Hans Zimmer's score to this masterpiece. Thank you John Williams!
I'm not sure why, but during this first minute, I could probably cry on cue. Marlon Brandos voice, the stars, THAT JOHN WILLIAMS MUSIC.. It's easily the best part of the movie, and makes me want to make movies of my own.
I am not a fan of M.B.But he knocked this one out the park! And the theme gets me jazzed up.I was a kid and saw superman 2.And I was sorry I didn't see the first superman movie. It looked as if he stepped right out of the comic book.
Jor-El: "You'll travel far my little Kal-El but we will never leave you even in the faces of our deaths you will make my strength your own you'll see my life through your eyes as your life will be seen through mine the son becomes the father and the father becomes the son"
I was born in the 2000s but this was my true introduction to Superman. This movie with its plot, story, character, and theme touches my soul and has now become my permanent childhood memory and true interpretation of Superman.
I will never understand the hate on for Superman Returns. This movie had a ton of great moments, and the scene with Lois and Superman hovering over Metropolis just completely nails what the character of Superman is all about. Routh's Superman is criminally underrated.
Indeed! Superman : Listen; what do you hear? Lois Lane : Nothing. Superman : I hear everything. You wrote that the world doesn't need a savior, but every day I hear people crying for one.
In 1978 Superman's opening we travel from Earth to Krypton. Here, we travel from Krypton to Earth. With this music, it's the most fantastic space travel in cinema history!!!
This part along was actually one of my favourite cinema experiences I've ever had. As someone who was brought up watching the old Superman films, watching this on a cinema screen was absolutely incredible. The rest of the film was hit and miss yes but this one part alone sent me into violent fangasms just hearing that music again for the first time in years, it was incredible.
The opening credits are the best part of the movie...with the exception of the airplane scene. The airplane scene is on the same level as the scene in Superman I where he caught Lois and then the helicopter. "You've got me!? Who's got you?"
+bolatluver29 It looks like a classic by comparison Haha. I didn't like Lois or the side story with the kid. But I certainly loved the rest. Spacey was a great and sinister Luthor. Routh was a bit stiff but you're not gonna get better continuity when it comes to looking like Reeve than Routh. Would've given this another movie.
L.J. Garcia I just had an issue with Routh and Bosworth's age, they were both in their early 20s. Being bland is one of the downsides of being Superman, you kinda have to be a bit of a "boy scout" so when comes the time where you uproot a whole freakin kryptonite island and off it into space, it makes it look amazing. And I really didn't feel Routh and Bosworth had good chemistry...
+bolatluver29 even with the extended cut being way better and having more of Superman, Returns had the help of being a semi-reboot for give us the Superman that most people love from the beginning, a good move. Man of Steel tried to have things from the darkest era of comic books, a move that maybe with Batman could work, but Superman wasn't the right choose.
A bad ass villain to put sup through some office walls would have made it good. The story was too grandma friendly even though Brandon R was a good successor to Reeves. And its a shame they never got a good writer and director to use him again.
I actually saw this in theaters, and while I don't remember what I thought of the film, this opening scene is possibly the happiest I've been in a movie theater. Not the most dramatic, but while seeing this on the big screen and hearing John Williams' score, I actually felt like I was flying. It was pure joy and adrenaline all wrapped up into one. I walked into this knowing that I would be seeing a Superman movie in the theaters, and regardless of how I re-evaluate the movie today, I'm glad I got to watch a happy Superman movie in theaters, if only for this one scene.
Superman Returns was and is great. ( And if you watch MoS you´ll see that they took a lot of parts from other movies including the eyes of Todd Ingram (and he was played by Brandon Routh)
Yea I know right. A lot of my friends hate the fact that I like Superman Returns, they give me this crummy reasoning about how bad the acting is. I thought the acting was fine, and the story was great. Fantastic movie!
How can anyone from the 80s not hold back tears at :50? The 70s and 80s Superman movies were campy as freak, but there was musical genius in some of Williams' work. The creators of this movie clearly understood that.
This is what I call an intro. This is what I call a movie. And this is what I call MUSIC. Kudos to John for all of his work. Kudos to Bryan. KUDOS to Christopher. You made my childhood. No more words needed.
My dad and mom and neighbor friend took me to see this, but we missed the entire opening credits since my Dad was arguing with his boss outside the theater and all i heard inside was the clapping and cheering and exciting of the audience as the credits and theme played, which still gave me chills but i was upset we didnt see it inside the theater, but once we sat down to watch the opening scene and the rest of the film, I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fun fact, Bryan Singer asked John Williams if he wanted to return for this film but he was unable to due to existing projects. Nevertheless, it’s great that they were still able to use his theme for the film.
CroPETROforeverNBA Absolutely! It gets you pumped up for the movie. I love how the music changes in this too!! You can't beat this nostalgic classic theme tune. I wish they'd bring it back some day. I do like the modern Superman of today though. I turned Man of Steel off after seeing 30 min of it. The flying dragons and the modern version of Crypton pissed me off. After seeing Batman VS Superman and Wonder Woman, I actually gave Man of Steel a chance. I actually like how all 3 movies link in with each other and the story is done quite well to a point. Batman VS Superman's battle could've ended better at the end though....
Agreed. And as a somewhat casual fan of Superman (mostly through the animated series, a handful of episodes of Lois and Clark, the Christopher Reeve films whenever they were on TV, and Smallville), this was friggin' epic to witness. Helps it was also a drive-in theater. :)
If THIS was the Superman we were going to get in the DCEU I might just have become a fan. I see nothing but EMO in the DCEU. EMO Superman. EMO Batman. Grab some fortitude. Be like Captain America. Be like Brandon Routh.
Oh my goodness...the MUSIC!!!!!! It's pure magnificence!! It literally energizes me... it's inspired!! THIS is the music I'd use to workout to, (if I worked out at all, that is).
kim daniel thorkildsen it could be worse at least it didn't create even more plot holes turn superman into a neck snapping jerk who always looks like he can smell other peoples farts from across the room and is trying not to get grossed out by it then proceed to make lex luthor a joker knock off then have the secret twist at the end be that both him and batman both have mothers named Martha and finally put the icing on the cake by giving the only two redeeming characters (batman and wonder woman) the smallest amount of screen time in the whole movie so that they can further develop the fact that superman likes to whine... dammit not again. my apologies for that these days it seems like whenever I talk about dc it turns into a rant about ether batman v superman or teen titans go. but they can still come back... right?...
personally I'm fine with a superman movie to have some somber moments as long as it still stays true to the character and they don't take over the whole movie that's where both this movie and man of steel went wrong this movie tried to shy away from somber moments to much while man of steel let them take over the whole movie until it no longer resembled anything close to a superman movie. I love that this movie was trying to be a loving homage to the original 1978 superman movie and think that the modern ones should probably try a bit of that to but it was just poorly executed. maybe is they tried again with say Sam Raimi directing it tom welling as superman and Bryan Cranston as Lex Luther
It warms my heart to see all these people come together and marvel at this no doubt masterpiece of an opening, a time when, like Batman was a symbol of fear and hope for Gotham, Superman was an icon of the goodness and miracles of Metropolis, and by extension, Mankind themselves, as he is not some egotistical demigod who sees others beneath him, but is just a genuinely nice guy who saves and protects others The hero is the disguise, the man is the real person
I am an old superman fan, as I've said in my previous comment, and THIS IS THE BEST SUPERMAN INTRO EVER for me. Couple of reasons: Marlon Brando's voice, and our old school intro in this new age. I was like 25 when this movie came out... I was siting in cinema, my girlfriend was with me, I CRIED ON THIS... I FU...ING CRIED.... why... once as a child I thought I can fly, in my mind because of Superman, he was more than superhero in movie...this theme gives you hope like nothin I ever saw or heard in my life, not to mention any other superhero theme... Everyone who understands me on this, and there are MILLIONS OF US around the world, trust me on this; we all have some of Superman in us, I think that's the whole point, you dont have to fly and be man of steel, you can help and fight trough the life how ever you can... NEVER SURRENDER. And yes, I cried in cinema. Girlfriend was in shock when saw me lol, she understood without me sayin anythin. Man of Steel NEVER EVER gave me this goosebumps, goosebumps like I could die from it and live forever in the same time.
I went to see Superman the Movie at the cinema watching the credits thinking wow sending a shiver up my spine , then I went and saw this movie and the same music and credits came on and it made me emotional, thinking of all those years before , nothing has came close to the original music
I don't care for this movie at all but this remains the greatest thrill I've ever had from opening credits. I was there opening night too. Energy was palpable
What an amazing experience! This was the first Superman film I saw in theaters. I was just a little boy when they were coming out in the 80s, so I never got to see it at a theater until this one came out and it blew me away!
When I saw the intro in the theaters, my eyes were filled and i had goosebumps. I grew up with this version of Superman. I still think it was a good movie but to much of an homage to the past. I understand what Singer was doing, he was trying to bring Superman back to our collective memory. I think he would have nailed the sequels. Man of Steel is a completely different version of Superman, more in line with the times we live in now.
Had chills in the cinema watching this - Jor El's parting words accompanied by the Krypton theme, with that amazing pull back to reveal Krypton dwarfed by Rao in the sun's dying moments - then the implosion, the quiet flare as the sun attempts to reignite, and then the awesome and horrible moment when that fails and enoxorable physics shatter both star and planet alike. Farewell Krypton, and welcome to your last son... Got to add, I've always appreciated how Jor-El's final words ('the son') sync with the pan up to reveal the full size of Rao ('the sun'). Nice touch. And apparently this is the 1000th comment on this video, so I'm glad I found the inspiration to put down so many of my thoughts! Thanks so much for uploading this Amkha! :)
No matter what people or critics say about this movie, I still get chills everytime that S shield bursts onto the screen when the Superman theme starts playing. It's such an epic feeling that always makes the hair on your arms stand
It's quite incredible : I remember my chilling in the cinema during this opening... despite the fact the movie was forgettable... What a sound... J.Williams is a freaking dude !
I'm torn between the two recent iterations of The Man... I like the gritty-ness of MOS, yet SR was so much more true to the original movies... Love these opening credits
mos wasn't really gritty, the haters just make up bullshit like he's emo, whiny, and not a hero, when the whole movie was based on the successful earth 1 run, and was literally about an outsider trying to find his place in a planet he clearly isn't from
@Anarchy Productions rewatch the movie, Clark didn’t destroy a single building in metropolis, the only things he destroyed in the metropolis fight was the world engine and somewhat the satellite, all the destruction in metropolis was 100% the world engine and Zod’s fault, with your logic, Superman and 99% of the marvel and dc universe aren’t heroes because they’ve all caused collateral damage
I remember seeing this in the theater and turning to my brother as soon as John Williams classic Superman Theme began to play and said "Best opening Superman scene ever and a classic tribute" and I still believe that to this day.
This is what a theme for Superman should be - The thunderous swelling of a miraculous force of nature, careening to demolish what ever is wrong and save us all. Beautiful.
This entire sequence outright gave me chills. It was such a great homage to the original Superman films. And this is the best Superman theme ever. John Williams is a majestic genius.
I am a die hard Superman fan and for me Superman Returns is the perfect Superman film. It's everything Superman is about. I like MOS but took me a very long time to accept it in to the Superman family. As for Batman Vs Superman don't get me started. Any future Superman films needs The Superman March Theme back.
The Superman theme is something WB should NEVER neglect. It's up there with the theme for Star Wars, Mission impossible, James Bond, etc. Superman: Legacy better show respect.
Same with the Batman theme from the Keaton movies. When you have a theme that becomes iconic and instantly recognizable, you shouldn’t not use it. Period. Especially when John Williams wrote it. For example, I think we’d all agree it would be criminal to not use John Williams’ 1984 Olympics theme.
Just watched Crisis and Infinite earth, this superman is still gonna, the references and the score for his superman, basically a Superman Returns Returns sequel lmao, I’m so glad Brandon Route is back, the nostalgia is real. Like seeing the Christopher Reeves in him.
My father took a 6 year old me out of school to see this movie in IMAX 3D. I believe it was one of the first 2D movies to be converted to 3D. And as a little girl, I reached out when I saw a man fly. He said he saw the original movie in 78 as a kid, and wanted to give me that same experience. I'm always going to love this movie. It's a wonderful tribute to the Reeve movies and the character as a whole.
Indeed this intro does justice to the Epic and unmatched old Superman film its such a good thing they kept the Epic Theme it is one of the Best scores Ever writen for Any movie period
The way they paid homage in the intro to the original Superman movie was a class act all the way! Superman Returns was a great movie, hands down! Way better than the "Man of Steel"!
Bash this movie all you want but this shit right here gave me goosebumps in the theater when i saw it and gave me a knott in my throat. Felt like a 6 year old again watching Superman 2. RIP Christopher Reeve.
Say what you will about this movie's shortcomings, but bringing back John Williams' main title was perfect. Dispensing with it was a boneheaded move on the DCEU's part.
While I do believe that Superman The Movie is the best Superman movie, this one holds a VERY special place in my heart because not only was it the first Superman film I ever watched, it was the first SUPERHERO film I ever watched. Because I was born in 2001, I didn't grow up with Christopher Reeve. I feel kinda sad I didn't. Still. I LOVE this movie and I HATE the hate it receives.
