Wayyyy back in the original comics, they had him do this to put out an oil fire (lol) that was going out of control. The writers are nodding off to that one, but making it wayyy more realistic (since water is used to manage reactors, but would do nothing to the oil fire). Great scene. @@MynameisBrianZX

@@danielhughes5932No, cooling towers are not full of liquid water, that’s not how this works. A crack in the side would not be that big a deal relative to the reactor overheating. Chances are the core is overheating due in part to loss of coolant, like a pump failure. But by the time core temps get to this level, any restoration of coolant will just result in a steam explosion. The actual fix would be to take the core into space, certainly within Supe’s skill set.

@cgi2002 3 месяца назад
except he worked inside the cooling tower, which has nothing to do with the reactor or its cooling setup (they are for the secondary cooling loop which is the power generation system), so all he did was make the floor wet. The reactor would be in a sealed reinforced concrete building several hundred feet away and honestly by this point has already melted down, it can do that without exploding or releasing radiation into the air, the tear in the containment shell has likely flooded the reactor building with superheated radioactive steam or worse, hydrogen, and there is now a major risk of an explosion causing a radiation leak (its contained by the building at this point). That the reactor isn't SCRAM'd already means it can't be, as that would shut it down and stop it generating heat, means this reactor is already beyond saving, now its just all about stopping it or its containment building exploding. OG superman would just yeet the entire thing into orbit, this superman just killed Metropolis at worst, at best caused a major evacuation of the city and several hundred billion in cleanup. Doesn't matter what the chinese woman states, a reactor thats reached this point of failure has already failed, the people talking are about 5 minutes too late and are been overly hopeful about fixing it, it can't be fixed.

@cgi2002
@cgi2002 3 месяца назад
I'm finding it amusing they think its a fixable problem (i noted the stupidity with the towers too). A reactor thats overheated like this has already melted down, its SCRAM has failed, and its containment vessel is apparently breached so the containment building is now a radiation flooded deathtrap. People seem to think that a meltdown means an explosion, it just means the fuels overheated and melted, and no reactor would be allowed to reach that point without been SCRAM'd first, meaning that must have failed (which should be nigh impossible due to the design). Best case here, he stops the explosion (once he realises he's in the wrong place), goes to the reactor building and USES THE DOOR & AIRLOCKS to enter (otherwise he just breached containment and spread radioactive gas across the city) and manually cools it (his breath would work for that arguably). Now the DoE gets to spend the next several decades playing cleanup at a cost of hundreds of billions, likely people die of the limited exposure, and there is lots of political fallout. True best case though is he realsied his mistake, flies around the reactor building, digs out its foundations and yeets the entire building intact into space, no cleanup needed, no fallout, no deaths, just a large hole were the building used to be.
@steamandsmoke97
@steamandsmoke97 3 месяца назад
@cgi2002 SCRAM doesn't really fail. It's a light water reactor. If there is no Moderator, which in this case is also the coolant, there is no Reaction. It scrams in the absence of coolant with no need for control rods. However, while the Fission reaction itself has stopped, there is still a tremendous amount of Decay Heat depending on how dirty the fuel is. Even in their cold shut down state, the Core is still making 5% of its thermal capacity, which is why Reactors need continous cooling even when they're not online. This is what melts Reactors that have already "Scrammed". That is what happened at TMI, and also Fukushima. Both Plants lost cooling, so the cores melted. Both plants had Hydrogen Ignitions as well. TMI's hydrogen burn stayed within the containment building and people only knew it happened because of a pressure spike on the containment's pressure gauge as well as the building shuddering. The aftermath of which they saw when they entered the containment for the first time after the accident years later. Fukushima's containment needed to be vented so the hydrogen collected in the ceiling of the reactor buildings (not part of the actual drywell or containment structure) it found an ignition source and blew the blast panels off as the building was designed to do.
@cgi2002
@cgi2002 3 месяца назад
@@steamandsmoke97 exactly, a SCRAM can't really fail in that way (can't really fail at all unless you've done a big dumb already in one of a handful of well known "do not do this" ways) but due to what they were saying and how it was about to basically go full chernobyl on them, its clearly not shut down properly hence SCRAM failed in some way. That 5% standby heat (likely even at 10-20%) while it will melt fuel, its not going to instantly cause issues of that magnitude, the building is designed to handle that still. Now give it a few hours for gas preasure to build up and you might have issues, but 5mins isn't nearly enough time. Also you still don't put a block of ice in the cooling tower, hell you don't put it on the reactor either, cooling its surface is pointless, the coolant needs to contact the fuel, not the shell, all cooling the shell will do is make plenty of steam to burn the workers in the area.
@steamandsmoke97
@steamandsmoke97 3 месяца назад
@cgi2002 It's obvious the fuel assemblies that comprise the core *inside* the reactor vessel are what need to be cooled, not the outsife of the pressure vessel. However, you forgot something that rapid cooling of the vessel would do, regardless of internal or external. Plant personnel getting flash steam burns is mild in comparison, because they would be dead before they had a chance to realize they were burned. Why? Thermal Shock. If you rapidly cool a carbon steel reactor vessel with ICE, or even just inject extremely cold water, especially into one that is over 40 years old and has been embrittled by neutron bombardment, the reactor itself will fracture like glass and a massive steam explosion will result blowing the vessel and the containment building to smithereens.

Melting tempurature of uranium is around 1100 degrees. So if the pressure vessel is still in one piece, the molten uranium has just melted through it and started pooling underneath the reactor. You know, the same as chernobyl. Then there is the fact that the reactor isn't in the cooling stack, but in the reactor hall, and with the displayed tempurature in an unsealed environment the ice will sublimate and be of no us what so ever in cooling it. Water is a good nutron moderator, but its just going to boil away too fast to be effective. Supes would have to move the ractor and drop it into the ocean, or sink the the reactor into it..

You need to be careful about admitting cold seawater into an nuclear reactor approaching a loss of coolant accident (LOCA). On some nuclear-powered submarines, a last resort in the case of a loss of coolant emergency is to flood the core with seawater to draw off the excess heat. While this ruins a very expensive reactor, it theoretically saves the rest of the submarine from the meltdown. A cold water accident occurs when the seawater admitted is, as seawater usually is, cold. While cold water is fine for absorbing excess heat, it also traps more neutrons than standard coolant or even warmer water. When the neutrons get trapped, they trigger more fission reactions, generating more heat, in a chain that eventually generates temperatures that no amount of coolant can absorb. Eventually, a cold water accident causes the opposite of what was intended: rather than cooling the reactor, it causes it to approach meltdown. This was portrayed in THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, with one of the submarines that had a bad valve that broke and caused a LOCA event. The engineer saw this and opened the exterior seawater valves, flooding the reactor vessel with COLD, DENSE seawater, triggering quite the opposite, the Cold Water Accident. The reactor interacts with the water causing a prompt criticality that overheats the core, melting it down. The poor engineer sees the containment wall get red, then blue from the radiation interacting with the hydrogen, then oblivion as the core melts through the walls and falls to the ocean floor.

@kryojenisist
@kryojenisist Год назад
Too much heat over a LARGE surface. Thats like you trying to cool a giant room with just one small ac unit.. Sure it may get it done with time, but if you could find a way of cooling the whole room by 5 degrees in five seconds. Its better than cooling portions of it over a long period of time. Also, with a nuclear reactor, its pumping out constant energy, so you need to either cool it all down, or nothing happens.
@nokkr6m
@nokkr6m Год назад
@@kryojenisist his freeze breath could cool down the reactor instantly but sudden drop of temperature could possibly brings more problems. That's why he use the iceberg to cool down the reactor slowly and not sudden
@okmangeez
@okmangeez Год назад
@@nokkr6m Not to mention, the biggest issue with the meltdown shown in the scene was that water was leaking from the cooling tank and exposing the uranium rods to the air (which superheats it and leaks radiation). By putting an iceberg in there, he’s refilling the cooling tank to make sure the rods stay under water (where they won’t leak radiation into the air).

Listen to the scientists when he goes in they say his breath won't save it because all the water is gone (not sure the difference, prolly isn't, but at least they attempt an explanation) it apparently drained from the crack he seals with his optic blasts. Then because hand scooping water back into it would take too long he freezes a big ass Boulder of it so he can transport a couple hundred thousand gallons at once

Wouldn't this cause a giant hydro-atomic explosion?
@halhala2
@halhala2 2 года назад
Specifically no. Meltdowns aren’t explosive, not like nuclear bombs. What happens is a massive release of radiation closer to a dirty bomb. It’s a giant poisonous mutagenic cloud. However this volatile reaction requires a certain amount of energy to activate, energy beyond the normal operating temperature of a nuclear reactor. Nuclear power plants use water to cool down the reactor so this threshold is never hit. By sealing the system rupture with heat vision, Superman kept any radiation from escaping and made sure the water he brought in would actually cool the reactor properly.

Directly putting ice-cold water inside a breached reactor core would cause a huge expansion explosion, like the one risked ad Chernobyl. But hey, they are making us believe a reactor breach can happen inside a cooling tower without a containment building, and that super guy spewing lasers from his eyes can fix the breach, and that a portable iceberg can cool a reactor down for good...

Maybe, but there's two things. 1. Considering this is the modern era and that his sons were born in 2006ish, we can say this takes place in the 2020s. Let's say Clark is in his 40s which would be an appropriate age for having teenage children. He'd landed on earth in the 1970s. He'd be at least 7 when Chernobyl happened. I wouldn't expect a literal child to prevent a nuclear disaster. 2. Considering the multiverse, there's a possibility that Chernobyl didn't go the way we knew it. The mentioned Fukushima, another notorious disaster from 2011 but is overshadowed by Chernobyl in terms of having the title of worst nuclear disaster. The fact they chose that disaster instead to describe the impending impact this one would've been had Superman not intervened, especially considering how everyone was concerned and how the visuals conveyed the disaster, presents the possibility that Chernobyl may not have gone like how it did. Maybe it didn't even happen at all. After all, most American cities in DC comics have different names than in the real world. Why not history have gone different.
