True story. Mid 80s. I'm playing bass in a bar band. Supertramp is in Cleveland for a concert. About midnight people start requesting Supertramp songs, which we don't do. I look over at the bar and see John Helliwell sitting at the bar. I say; hey, I think that guy knows some Supertramp. Ask him up on stage. Turns out the whole band was there. They all come up! Owner locks the doors. We're doing shots and hanging/jamming with the band. We're there till like 5AM. A memory I'll never forget. Thank you, Jamel for the reaction. Stay safe. Peace out.
"I say, now watch what you say, or they'll be calling you a radical, a liberal, oh, fanatical, criminal. Oh won't you sign up your name? We'd like to feel you're acceptable, oh presentable, a vegetable." Some of my favourite lyrics in the history of pop and *still* IMO, as relevant today, as they were, when written.
No bullshit, I sincerely enjoy your spirit. I am noticeably more relaxed and focused after spending a couple of songs with you, I thank you for your decency and kindness, Your not going unnoticed...we're listening and fortunate. A better world for all.
In the past that one was a hard one to find on RU-vid. They kept getting taken down. I havent tried in a long time, so maybe that isnt true anymore. Anyway, that is probably my favorite.
This song was incredibly comforting to me as a 14 year old misfit. Now that I'm a fifty something year old misfit, it's very comforting to see you enjoying it too. :)
There’s also the guy from Journey.. Sorry, I forget his name.. And even the new young dude, from the Philippines that they have now, is quite awesome :-)
Supertramp makes me think of my aunt's husband so much. He was a huge Supertramp fan that unfortunately died of cancer. I was always trying to get him in to Phish but I get his love if this band. RIP Peter.
.....and yet, he wasn't missed when he left. Brother Where You Bound, the bands first album after he left is one of their best. He was more 'pop' whereas Rick was more prog....and that's when Supertramp were at their best!
@@stevemurrell6167 not missed?, Ha. He went on and created great solo work. The Tramp kind of flopped. Brother Where You Bound was good. Especially when you add David Gilmore from Floyd.
Something worth mentioning on this song is that it is a “Pop” song. Very hard to find a pop song with a quality chord progression and arrangement like that today.
Esperanza Spalding, Laura Mvula, Janelle Monate, Hiatus Kaiyote, Anderson .Paak, Sampha, Little Dragon, Robert Glasper, etc. I could go on. All outstanding musicians creating intricate arrangements and they can sound Pop if they want to at times. It's just that your local classic rock station won't play them because they are stuck in the past.
Of all the youtube reaction channels, Jamal is the one I'd like to hang out with the most. Always seems so positive and open minded. Everyone could use more people with that sort of perspective in their lives.
"School", "Crime of the Century", "Even In The Quietest Moments", "Fool's Overture", "Child of Vision", "Take the Long Way Home" all very much worth a listen.
This song awoke my Spirit. It introduced me to philosophy and to question myself. Since then I have been on a journey to try and be a better person. I was 14 when I first heard this song.. The lyrics are haunting. Thank you!
Breakfast in America & Take the Long Way Home... Supertramp must hear songs( you've heard them at work! Edited- put Road in title instead of Way... sorry my bad!
when I was in a school this song came on. I used to think what it would be like to be on the other side of it. ...Now I am. I feel like I touch the child I was now.
“Bloody Well Right”... the band’s breakthrough hit in the U.S. (#35 Billboard Hot 100), a classic rock radio standard to this day, and arguably Supertramp’s hardest rocking song. Love the main riff. Love your videos, brother! Keep ‘em comin’.
I love how many songs you've heard but didn't know that you get to rediscover here. I don't know why it's so enjoyable to see other people hear songs you've grown to love, but it is.
Never ever heard of Ambrosia. Doesn't get played on the Classic Rock channel here in New Zealand. Sounds good though. Cheers...dude dressed like Star Trek??
@@jivekiwi I love this episode, and yes, I am a big Star Trek fan. Love science fiction in general. As for Ambrosia, check out the first two albums. They have a strong Latinx disco flavor, but they're also fueled by symphonic rock. Additionally, they're produced by Alan Parsons. Some members would later guest on the Alan Parsons Project!
COOL! I love Andy & Alex's reactions. They are the Siskel and Ebert of music reaction videos. They remind me of my best friend and myself from 50 years ago, hearing these tunes for the first time.
Up until about a year ago, my husband had no idea who Supertramp was. To be fair, his parents made him and his sister listen to bluegrass for years. But he is learning now.
I didn’t realise it then, but our songs had a total story, meaning, or just things to activate our minds. No wonder we would be in our rooms just listening to music. We didn’t need to do anything but listen to music.
When I was probably about 6 I heard that for the first time and my dad said it's OK to say "naughty words" in song because it's art, so I ran around singing it non stop just so I could say "bloody well right" and not get told off 😂 😂
These lyrics!!! Imagine you are a teenager and this is all you feel: I used to be a happy child and then they teach me how to be logical, sensible, forget all your fantasies and creativity. I loved that, I really needed that. I think there is s/th very British in it.
Yes School is definitly a perfect song for this channel as well as Crime of the Century, Rudy or Bloody Well Right I would say. But School is by far the song I would use to introduce the group to someone. And damn it is one of the most powerful songs ever!
One of my top 5 favorite bands! Please check out: “Dreamer” “Take the Long Way Home” “Breakfast in America” I also agree; Jon Anderson reminds me of Geddy too!
@Mike Walter Think you need to learn the lyrics matey. Hint: "watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical , a liberal, oh fanatical, a criminal sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're Acceptable , Respectable, oh presentable, a vegetable!" Yeah, so no. If your a Republican, then you are in Supertramps own words.. a vegetable.
Except for the brief use of the Colico electronic football game touchdown noise right after the "d-d-d-d-d-d-d-digital!" during the fadeout. That, immediately followed up by the "one, two, three, FIVE!" count were my favorite parts when I first heard it on the radio back in the long, long ago. :D
I saw these guys in concert when this album came out and twice more in the mid 80s. I haven't deliberately played their stuff in ten years. Yet today, listening to the lyrics, I can't help but see a parallel to all that a younger generation is living through. Compassion goes a long way "There are times when all the world's asleep The questions run too deep For such a simple man Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned I know it sounds absurd Please tell me who I am". It hurts to hear that voice.
“Roger Hodson” and Micheal Jackson, both have one thing in common. They both uttered the word VEGETABLE in a song. Getty Lee (Rush), Jon Anderson (Yes) and Roger all have that very high talking voice that truly makes them unique. Breakfast in America album could be listened to front to back. Not a concept album necessarily but every track is just awesome. Good string of hits on this one!
I love you and all the other young hip guys who are discovering my music 🎶. I get to enjoy it from a different perspective. Thanks so much and keep it up!!!
