@ChessMasterNate
@ChessMasterNate Месяц назад
The body does need calcium. The small amount in Pantothenic acid is not going to hurt anything, as calcium is the most needed mineral. Buying the other form is certain to do one thing, cost you more money. A 500mg Pantothenic acid supplement has 18mg of calcium, or roughly 1% of the daily recommendation for calcium. Why would anyone think they need more than 500mg of pantothenic acid, when the recommendation is 5mg? There is also a reason for the prefix "Pan-" in the name. It is in nearly all the food. It is hard to get a deficiency. That calcium ends up in the cell for some other reason than normal calcium intake. Iron intake on the other hand certainly can be a problem. However, it is a fine balance, because we need it to make hemoglobin, so we can get oxygen and transport it around the body. I agree, you need labs that show you are low (anemic), before supplementing, and during supplementation. Copper is important for Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), which is one of the most potent antioxidants the body makes. We have more of this than just about any animal ever tested. It is the main reason we live longer than most animals. We have 3 kinds of it. Each operates in a different area. SOD1 operates in the cytoplasm, has copper, and is absolutely required. SOD3 also incorporates copper. That one is used intracellularly. SOD2 incorporates manganese instead, and operates inside the mitochondria. All these elements are essential. Eliminating any of these from the diet will kill you. In general, it is usually a bad idea to get large regular doses of any mineral. Large being relative to the recommendations and especially avoid exceeding the listed upper limits, without a doctor's order.
@AncestralFuel
@AncestralFuel Месяц назад
It also seems the case that we get much less copper in our diets than our ancestors due to the depletion in soils as well as the substitution of water from natural sources such as springs and wells with recycled tap water.

Thanks for your comment. Very interesting info particularly about SOD 1-3 co-factors/areas of operation that I wasn't fully aware of. Could you kindly suggest some biochemistry books that are more directed to the context of nutrition? I mostly referred to textbooks like Tietz and Stryer/Devlin during my academic years but want to explore further...Thanks in advance.

Good info! My exceptions are that I take 60mg Dy Zinc for eye, male, and general health and detox and drink filtered water and need maybe 1mg Copper Dy to avoid depletion by Zinc and Zinc Copper tabs come in 2mg per 30mg Zinc. If I don't take Copper I run towards anemia. That's my rationale for taking Copper Dy, I'm not so sure whether 2mg Copper is required but at 10:1 ratio of Zinc to Copper is frequently recommended. I take Pantothenic Acid 500mg before workouts and it does give an incredible energy boost but other than that I would stick to the RDA maybe. 100% I take Iron every two to three days in Ferrochel form (not raw Iron). It makes a huge difference to my energy levels, helps Oxygen uptake also I suspect. High Zinc is incredibly important for older males I am sold on that for prostate health alone for at least 30mg. Eye health supplement AREDS has I believe 80mg Zinc and 2mg Copper. Wish you the best in your optimization journey and hope everyone finds their personal sweet spot. It will extend your life and get you much greater activity energy. One more caveat is that Iron metabolics require Copper to break down raw Iron from the diet.

Some oxidative stress is essential for longevity. While avoiding excessive intake of supplements like iron, copper, and calcium is advisable, the oxidative stress induced by intense exercise can actually enhance our resilience. However, overusing antioxidants can be harmful, as it’s crucial to maintain a balance between oxidants and antioxidants.
@joenabbi1214
@joenabbi1214 Месяц назад
excellent point, you need everything in balance for your enzyme reactions to work properly. The body just needs enough nutrients to operate and then the antioxidants will help where your body might be lacking depending on your stressors.

I recently discovered a fascinating presentation that delves into the critical relationship between mitochondrial health and oxidative stress. The speaker highlighted the significance of maintaining a healthy cytoplasm to support optimal mitochondrial function and discussed the role of antioxidants like glutathione and vitamin C in cellular homeostasis. They also emphasised the need to manage intracellular calcium levels to prevent cellular damage and the importance of mitochondrial support agents in promoting mitochondrial health. Additionally, the speaker cautioned against the indiscriminate use of certain supplements, particularly iron, which can exacerbate oxidative stress if not taken under appropriate circumstances. Overall, the presentation underscored the intricate interplay between cellular components and the importance of targeted interventions in maintaining mitochondrial health and combating oxidative stress.
