Supporting children, supporting nations: Peguis First Nation and the exercise of Indigenous child welfare jurisdiction in Manitoba
In 2020, the federal law “An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families” came into force. The act creates a path for Indigenous governing bodies to exercise jurisdiction over child and family services (CFS), and for Indigenous law to take precedence over provincial CFS law.
This event will explore the implementation of the federal act in Manitoba, with a particular focus on the example of Peguis First Nation, the first Indigenous Governing Body in Manitoba to have its law come into force, and the first to sign a trilateral Coordination Agreement with the governments of Manitoba and Canada.
Speakers:
Clemene Hornbrook, Executive Director, Peguis Child and Family Services
Scott Amos and Marilyn Birch, Indigenous Services Canada
Emmet Collins, Indigenous Governing Bodies Support Branch, Government of Manitoba
