Suppressors 101: 3 Things to Know Before Buying a Rimfire .22LR Suppressor

In this video, Rob Orgel looks at the essential factors to consider when purchasing a .22LR suppressor. He highlights three main aspects: serviceability, durability, and versatility. Choosing a suppressor that can be easily taken apart and cleaned is crucial, as .22LR ammunition tends to be corrosive. A suppressor rated for 5.7 x 28mm ammunition ensures robustness and the ability to handle various calibers, offering great durability. Additionally, while integrally suppressed systems are extremely quiet, they are dedicated to specific firearms, unlike versatile suppressors that can be used across multiple guns.

00:00 - Intro
00:10 - 1 Serviceability
01:35 - 2 5.7x28 Rating
02:43 - 3 Integral Suppressors
Correction:
0:38 Black Powder is no longer used for .22LR, however it's still a very dirty round due to the powder residue and lead.

For years I've been to the opinion that the NFA review Channel is the premiere RU-vid channel for suppressor information and knowledge - and while that is still one of my absolute favorite channels and people this channel and the information you give Rob has proved to be an equal standing in my opinion

What? Sorry to be that guy, but modern 22 LR is not loaded with black powder, and it is not corrosive. The reason that you need a serviceable 22 LR can is because vaporized lead cools and builds up in the can. Eventually it will fill all the space between the baffles. I did this with my Gem tech Outback II. Thankfully I heard about their rebuild program, and now it is a serviceable can with a monolithic stack. I have been liking your videos so far, but that black powder bit blew my mind.

.22 LR is not loaded with Black Powder, it is loaded with modern smokeless powder. It is dirty, and the leads up suppressors.

22LR is notorious for being a dirty round. How much is from lead bullets vs powder is debated bout as much as the caliber debate

@SilencerSyndicate when .22 LR was first designed in 1887 it did use blacknpowder. So calling .22 LR a black powder cartridge is not incorrect, it just doesn't use black powder anymore. Still, his point that .22 LR is dirty and will gum up a suppressor is valid.
@davidproctor7102

Came in to say the same thing. Modern loads are certainly not black powder. I haven’t done any testing to confirm this, but I suspect one of the things that makes 22LR so dirty is the wax-lubricated bullet.

Great video. I bought the same Gemtech Outback II can about 10 years ago. (I also did not know to look for one that could be taken apart, and I also missed out on the factory conversion option) I have never cleaned mine, but it has only had a couple hundred rounds shot through it. (So far, it is still pretty hushed.) I just started looking at getting more suppressors, since I have started looking for a parcel of land to buy. (I want to be a polite neighbor 😁) I have one in jail now, and am looking at a couple more. (another .22 and like you said, it has to be 5.7 capable. Also looking at a .46 cal one) The problem now is availability of product. One in particular I want is listed as backordered at Silencer Shop, Silencer Co, etc. I contacted the actual manufacturer, and they said if I ordered one today, it would be about 3 months before they got to a new order and had a serial number to ship to the dealer. (Glad they have that much business, but it is sad when you are the customer wanting one) I went to about 4 dealers yesterday, and they all had some suppressor models in stock, but none were models I was familiar with. (And I kept asking myself why those particular cans were available in the store, while the others that I am familiar with, are not...Makes you kind of think those models are there in stock for a reason? - perhaps they are not as well designed, or it might be new companies trying to cash-in on the new demand.) Thanks for the video(s).

Don’t own a suppressor yet, but I suspected as much that the ability to clean a suppressor would be a huge advantage. Also considering using a 5.7x28 rated “rimfire” suppresser is great intel. Would love to see an episode on how to address concentricity issues on an AK-47. What steps should be taken to remediate the issue such as getting a 90 degree crown tool as a start (just ordered one) from PTG, etc.

Love the suppressor in the thumbnail. Pro tip. Move that round baffle further down the can. It will collect less crap further down and be easier to take down for cleaning. Just my experience. Great can at a great price. The wipes did not really do anything in my opinion.

Love your channel. I bought two suppressors from Silencer Central last month, and they e-formed them on 4-18, 24. So it has been a month, and they make you do a trust, so I have awhile to wait. I bought the Banish 45 for my CMMG Banshee and Stribog SP9A1, both 9mm. It has aluminum baffles so I will have to scrub them by hand, but the Banish 22 has titanium baffles, so I think I can use the Hornady Ultrasonic Cleaner I have with it. It will be used with a Sig P322 and S&W M&P AR15-22. I hope both are good suppressors.

I was just thinking about instead of getting a 22 getting something rated for 556 because of the extra capability and that it should be generally fine but I might just be way off base with that theory craft lol. Kind of same logic with getting a 30+ even for smaller rounds like 556
@Ertactical
@Ertactical 6 дней назад
i don't put 22 lr through my 556. but you def can. just be ready to clean it later. also is a lot larger and heaver than a 22 can. id get both but i also have 73 so i am a bad example hahah

I bought a 30 cal can for my first suppressor that was servicable because i wanted to shoot 22 thru it but also bigger things. It kinda makes me wonder though l, is there an advantage to having a dedicated 22 suppressor over something like a 223 suppressor? They always have more volume and will shoot all the same rounds as a 22 can and then some
@Ertactical

What's your opinion on reflex design suppressors for larger cartridges? I don't see many out models there, and the additional volume without adding length seems like a good thing- but there's also the additional weight to consider I guess.
@Ertactical
@Ertactical Месяц назад
I am not sure what you mean by "reflex design". tell me more?
@mikedebear
@mikedebear Месяц назад
@@Ertactical A reflex design can gives you the volume of an integrally suppressed rifle without bleeding off gas before the normal end of the muzzle. The attachment threads for the suppressor are recessed several inches inside of the can. The first chamber effectively sleeves several inches of the outside of the barrel- the gas travels backwards to fill the first chamber after exiting the muzzle. The internal baffle stack is conventional, it's just that first chamber that sets it apart. I've only seen them used on .50 BMG and Cheytac .408 rifles and I was curious why they aren't more popular.
@Ertactical
@Ertactical Месяц назад
@@mikedebear ah, so like an "over the barrel" type?
@mikedebear
@mikedebear Месяц назад
@@Ertactical Exactly
@Ertactical
@Ertactical Месяц назад
@@mikedebear I have had some like it, the problem is that many these days we set up our rifles differently with full length hand guards and this makes over the barrel cans tuff, as well we use shorter guns now and this puts the gas block close to the end of the bbl, this is my guess as to why they are less common, I do still have the OCM5 and that too comes with OTB issues. hope this helps, tell what you think
