We Chinese call it hand pole for a rod without a reel. 90% freshwater fishermen in China use hand pole for fishing. The technique is called "suspended weight(sinker) fishing", came from Taiwan, also called "Taiwan style fishing". A slim and sensitive float is required as strike indicator. The notable feature of this technique is that the fishline under the water surface is always perpendicular to the bottom.

They are used in the Delta a lot for panfish. Bobber and worm type deal. The pole allows you to stand on the levee and reach over the rules and cattails and drop the bait at the edge of the cover. It’s also called “dapping”.

Best time to surf fish is the incoming tide. My dad always said in his living years to fish 2 hours before high tide. I love it. Total Serenity.

Cook episode please! One of the reasons I thumb'd a couple videos down before. If you don't want to always do catch and cook then at least show your methods of cleaning and processing your catches. That's always interesting. Maybe show stomach contents and explain where that species is in the spawn cycle when holding. Coming from the Midwest and freshwater only I can tell you when most species here are pre/current/post spawn. California has to be different! That's information most fisherman would be interested in, especially when they have never fished that region. Also that method of ripping cranks is not wildly popular here but is very effective at catching crappie. Most people usually work jigs or float a bobber and minnows depending on the season.

Cane poles were used in Europe and in the US before reels. But the rod you have is a Japanese style of fishing called Tenkara . Because it collapsed in itself they make them from bamboo that’s the difference, Awesome!
@ChiefToad
@ChiefToad 3 года назад
The Japanese use them a good amount, and just like everything else, they have turned into an art form. They are traditionally bamboo in construction, and can go for a good deal of money, because the quality ones take a long time to produce.(There are some good yt vids on the process.) On the extreme end, beefy versions were used to commercially catch tuna(Also on yt) I have used them a lot while fishing in HI, for Halalu/Akule and other assorted species. You can just tie your line directly to the woven string, with a slip knot. It digs in and holds just fine, but attaching a small swivel also works.
@charlescoult

The cane pole looks perfect for catching trout from the shore with a micro jig. They cruise along the shore 10-20ft out. I think cane pole and micro jig could be a deadly combo.
@chrislling
@chrislling 3 года назад
@@12345B yeah I’ll look silly but I wonder if I can jig a mini jig in front of the trout cruising by shore, sight fishing without spooking them because I can be 24 feet away. Lol

@@12345B yeah I wouldn’t be casting, just holding the jig vertically in front of their face a few feet from shore but far enough away so I don’t spook them

this is how many fishermen fish in Belgium. How I started fishing years ago... :D for me fishing with rod and reel was weird, when I moved to NA :) edit: oh we normally sit on the site of the lake with this in holders, and use bobber on it, so we don't strain our wrists

24' tenkara. Cool. Just a knot at end of short cord at the tip then a loop with the leader passed through to lock on the cord. The knot will keep leader from slipping off. Easily removed when done fishing.

You never want your line to be longer than the length of your cane pole. Otherwise it’s too hard to effectively set the hook most times. Also a bobber and split shots is typically 99% of how people fish cane poles. I know American crappie fisherman sometimes don’t but that’s about it.

You can set it up similar to a fly fishing style with no reel. It'll give you the extra 20 more feet and when you do get a bite, just pull the line in by hand. It would be good for someone who doesn't want a reel... Just my 2 cents.

When I was a kid n new to fishing, we had to engineer our rod n reel cuz we got no allowance cuz it is not an azn thing. A bamboo pole. Take the tab of a coke can which has 2 holes in it. One hole goes into the tip of the bamboo stick and run a spool of line in the other hole. Now you can use physic to throw out your line n it goes far too. Try it out cuz you will not get a RU-vid video of this style. It is the ancient style of the old wise vietnamese fisherman. They brought that technique from the mainland to America. It becomes obsolete after rod n reel became more affordable and it is the cool thing to do.

24 feet?! Jeez! I think you can bonk or whip the fish on the head with that and just let the wave take their unconscious body in! Lol! I know some third world folks use bamboo sticks with a short 6 or 12 inch leader but only in fresh water and maybe 5 or 6 feet. After a year of you using that, you'll be like Popeye the Sailor Man! Thanks for the entertainment buddy!👍
