I love this type of IRL reviews. Thank you. I watched the SP7 review of Mr Brad RU-vidr he didn't recommend it for illustrators at all because of the pen sole.

Yea...I watch that as well. I guess it all depends on how you work. I like mine...and I use Wacom tech and the IPad Pro. Either way...it is a great machine overall:)

@@MichaelClaridaArts Studying literature at University has had a huge impact on me to finally start learning illustration and motion graphics just recently; I know that I need a device, but not sure that which form factor is the one for me. Hardware wise, I have a desktop pc, 16gb of ram, 8 gb graphics card, also a mid range laptop, 8th gen Intel cpu and 8 gb of ram with 4gb graphics card. I'm thinking whether I should go for a display tablet, all in one tablet, or simple pen tablet and I wish I just could decide more easily! SP7 comes very close to my ideal device but I hear complaints about low battery life and pen jitter which keeps me off to just go for it.

@@avdima5000 I would not go for the SP7 if you do not have experience. The HP Zbook x2 g4 is a monster machine with Wacom tech. You can get one cheaper now than when I bought mine. Look them up...very nice machine.

One thing i do wish, is that they would make the bevels smaller. I own an 11" ipad pro and its great but i truly am a windows guy and am going to always try to support them when i can. I also am going to order the Raphael 520 today, at that price its a win win. Thanks for ur input, keep the content coming. Im a new subscriber and very

I got my first Surface pro 7 a week ago, and Autodesk is a pretty nice program to use. I have also used Krita a little while ago, and it runs pretty smooth on the surface pro. I'm using some old stylus I have, so I can't say much about the pen pressure since it doesn't respond well at all 😅 I'm still waiting for my keyboard and pen to come in, and I think they cancelled my order since its been like a month or 2 now

Adobe Fresco has a free version and it works pretty well, Opencanvas has a 120 days free trial and its really good as well.

@@e.777.r2 I’ve been thinking on using Adobe Fresco for a while. I bought a monthly pass for Adobe, and Fresco is on there too. I’ll check it out tomorrow

Raphael 520 stylus. Great pen tech. Get a quick key remote as well…XP pen has a cheap one. I do not use the keyboard. You can always order a wireless one. It is a well rounded machine and more user practical than a app based tablet. M

It is weird...the surface devices seem to get better as to get get older. May be the continued optimization of Windows...or drivers getting better. I just updated the drivers last week...it is runs very nice. No issues. M

If you had to choose one of the portable devices you have, which one would you choose? I have been planning on buying a Wacom Display to upgrade from the Wacom Intuos I have since the eye-hand coordination situation isn't working for me. But now I need a tablet for note-taking for my University, so I am looking into buying a device for both drawing and note-taking. Since they all seem to be rather pricy and at the same time every product seems to have its shortcomings I find it really difficult to decide on a tablet to buy.

I've heard that people experience performance "stutter" on the Surface Pro compared to the iPad Pro. I don't really see that in this video, but maybe it only happens when you've got multiple programs running at once?

Well…it is actually a Microsoft pen protocol issue. It has been there since the beginning of ntrig. Nature of the tech. I draw pretty fast and use a smoother when drawing slow. The iPad Pro tech is super smooth. No jitter at all.

Good review. Though, I still see a problem with the diagonal test. I purchased a SP 3 or 4 (whatever the first NTRIG generation was). At first, I loved it. Loved the form factor, loved the computing power. Then I noticed how irritating the pen was... it seemed inaccurate. I'd try drawing some small details and I noticed the cursor would not go down where my pen touched. I did some testing and found it inconsistent. That's when I also found the diagonal test. I figured the sensors and/or drivers just aren't as good, resulting in an inaccurate pen. Every time I look for an upgrade, I check out the current line up of surface pros hoping they've fixed it. So far, they haven't. :( Obviously, many artists don't mind and are just fine with the SP. Maybe they don't notice the jitter? For others, it stands out too much. I ended up replacing the SP3 I purchased with a penabled laptop (i.e., old wacom tech), which was/is perfectly accurate. Recently upgraded to an ipad pro for on the go drawing, and a cintiq for at home drawing.

Yea...I agree...but I can live with the diagonal jitter. The Raphael 520 pen is much better than the surface pen as well. It is the tech they are using. Shame...but still a great machine:)

Great Video, question, have you experienced any heat issues? Mine gets super hot it hurts my hand while drawing.

Not with the 7. My surface book i7 got so hot it separated the screen. Not good. I have a surface laptop studio now. No heat issues at all:)

You say you can't feel latency, but I can see it. I can't stand that when I'm drawing because I use very quick strokes. Waiting for the tech to improve enough to see my strokes as I'm drawing them. Can't wait for it to get to that.

Hi. Did you use some screen protectors on you Surface devices? I trying to find out, are protectors worsen the feedback from the screen or not? On the other hand - intensive rubbing with the Pen. At 12:45 I noticed that the screen of your Surface Pro 5 looks ideal despite drawing on it. And it looks like there is no glass cover over the screen. Thank you for informative review and sharing the experience with previous devices.

I use a matte protector on my Lenovo and have used on on my surface pro 3 and my surface book. They work ok. I used them because the glare is so bad on the surface devices. Also, the pen nib on the older surface pens is rubber tipped so the protector film wore out nibs faster. I currently have a surface laptop studio and do not see myself getting another protector film. I like it how it is:) M

Thank you for this video, even if it is long, it was well needed as I'm still deciding if I should get the surface pro 7 seeing as it's on sale for a nice price! I'm just hesitant because I've seen mixed reviews, but this video (even though it's a year old) has actually helped me, I might just get it today 😁 would you say, in 2021/2022, it's still a great 2in1 for someone who is just now fully submerging into digital art, but still wants a good laptop for general use?

I'm a long time windows consumer, had PCs all my life. I have a beefy borderline desktop laptop that I use for my 3D work, art and animation programs. But it's just not really flexible and convenient enough for the on the go experience, you have to set it up... requires a lot of space as it's 17 inch, you need the charger which requires even more space... don't get me wrong I love it but I'm looking for a tablet that I can actually draw on instead of my bamboo wacom. And that's where I kind of hit a brick wall, as I just love my windows freedom, and Apple and even moreso Android lacking a lot of options for both animation, 3D, and requiring subscriptions for clip studio (which I have a perpetual license for in my laptop, no need for subscription) I feel like I'm getting my wallet milked for just owning an ios or android device. Thanks for this video this was very informative even a year later.

Yea…I feel your pain. The SP 8!is on my radar as it has new pen tech. I use both eco systems(windows and Mac) and see benefits for both. We are in a new world when it comes to software. We will see. M

Not sure. I have the Surface laptop studio…and with the revised tech and 120hz refresh rate I believe they solved most of the pen issues. If you are going to get a SP7…I would get a Rennasier Raphael 520 stylus. It is cheap and works better. The Slim pen tech will not shine on the SP7 or 8. M

My daughter is going to college majoring in illustration. She currently is using an iPad Pro for drawing. she is thinking to get a new computer which will fits her needs for college work. Is surface pro 7 sufficient? What’s about MacBook Pro? She probably doesn’t need surface book 3 right which is more expensive? I just want to get her a computer which ia sufficient for her college work. Thx!

The iPad Pro is great for sketching and art and procreate. The Sp7 is great for everything…runs full apps. The SP3 has a bigger screen and is epic for drawing. The Surface devices are full pc’s running full programs. I would get the best SP3 that you can afford. It is a great machine. M

Mike: How does this compare to say the Galaxy Tab S7+? Is this way more powerful? Will this run intensive painting programs like say Rebelle oir photoshop that take a lot of horsepower? or will it bog down too much? I like the fact that this is full on windows- and can run full programs like artrage or whatever- I like to do some illustration, but mostly like doing painting/watercolor, and am not sure a straight Tablet will cut it? Rebelle is known to be quite hard on even regular desktops machines with dedicated graphics cards- I also tried Paintstorm Studio on my desktop but it bogged down and crashed a couple times- but it was a great program- not sure though that a 2-1 will cut it with full programs?

I am not sure about the Samsung tablets as I do not use them. This machine will run Rebelle well and fresco and runs Photoshop very good. I have not tried illustrator yet. I know this machine runs windows full version...however you will probably want the more expensive i7 with 16gb of ram if you are using it as a work horse. Remember...it is not a desktop machine so don’t expect it to be. It will handle most programs(except painter...it is not compatible). I like the surface line...the pen tech is good...but it is not Wacom tech. For the size...power and portability it is a great option. Mike

@@MichaelClaridaArts Thanks Mike- that helps a lot- I need a 'portable' that i can take with me and work outdoors- not really concerned about weight- but just need something that can run full programs like Rebelle ok- don't mind if it bogs down a bit (unless it keeps crashing, then that's a diff story)- As I'm out and about i start an image- work it a bit- then later, in evening, I'll transfer it to my desktop machien for more work (I have an XP-Pen- (made a mistake, should just spent Xtra and got wacom Intuos)- for more working- as it's got the nice graphics card and plenty of ram- 12 cores too- Sounds liek this surface will fit the bill- I'm also looking at Samsung Galaxy Book Flex 15.6" - Intel Core i7 Processor 1065G7 - 16GB Memory - 512GB SSD - it's around $1700 though- uggh-

Mmm...there a a lot of software packages out there. I guess it depends on your need(traditional vs 3D) and how you will use it and where. Tv paint is good but expensive. Toon boom is good...but again expensive. You could go free with sketchbook pro as it does have a crude animation feature...but you will have to see what matches your skill set and budget.

Hi, great review! It helps me feel better for throwing this much money for my SP7. I have a question do- how do you care for your battery? I meen how often do you charg it and do you leav it to drain completely every time? I feel you shoud know better sinsce you had so many of the Surface Pro devises

I let it get down to ten percent and charge it up to 100. The SP7 is ok on battery...not Apple. I typically get about 4 -5 hours when drawing in Photoshop. If I am multitasking it goes down to 2.5 hours. Good on standby and it will last fir years. My wife still uses her SP2 and that things still gets about 3 hours. It is about 7 years old. Mike

is the rafael AES 1.0 pen? Need a better pen for my Acer Spin 5 2-1 which comes with a small skinny pen- not good for drawing-

It uses the Microsoft pen protocol(Ntrig) with 4096 levels of pressure. The Raphael 520 is a great alternative to spending a hundred bucks on a Surface pen. I am not sure about the acer machine compatibility. You may look on their web site:) M

Ha…no. Married for going on 26 years. If you have not tried the Surface laptop studio…try it. The new pen tech is spectacular.

Hi Michael! How do you compare ur experience with "HP Zbook x2 g4" vs. "SP7" from POV of pen smoothness and tilting in draw/sketch? Does MPP protocol compete good with Wacom pen or what? Thanks in advance

The Zbook is Wacom EMR..industry gold. The MPP is not great. The HP is sooooo much better:) MPP is ok…but for drawing the HP Zbook is just as good as the Wacom Cintiq.

Not really...but quitting times vary. I am not sure if it is Windows defender stealing resources...or the Adobe creative cloud backing up settings. Maybe the windows cloud...they all steal ram and processing power. However...loading is in the seconds...and so is quitting. It is pretty snappy...but so were all my Surface devices.

I believe that is the Surface pro pen 2. I also use the Raphael 520 which is better for details and pressure. I will be doing another tech review and drawing using Surface tech next week. Stay tuned:) M
