I think it was halfway through when I realized he actually expected an actual surgery robot.

Mot an electronics "expert", but as a hobbyist 3d printer/cnc guy and professional IT guy I can confirm what he said about the motors is true. A regular brushless DC motor can run real fast, but is unable to tell how much it has rotated due to the fact its a rather "dumb" piece of electronics. it's just some magnets and copper wire. Adding a driver board that can measure how much it turns is how you make servo motors, which are motors that can tell how much they have rotated using additional electronics. It's an old trick for DIY CNC mills if you don't want to shell thousands of dollars for a high quality servo motor ecosystem.

This video was like 10 times funnier having a surgeon react to it i actually died watching this

Michael Reeves represents why I went into engineering and he continues to be an inspiration for me and all of my engineering friends. The man is brilliant and like any true engineer has the skills and the determination to bring any and all of his ideas, no matter how dumb or ill-conceived, into the real world. And once he makes his dreams a reality, the chaotic gremlin of a human being does whatever the fuck he wants with them. We could all take a page out of Michael's book.

Michael Reeves is the guy who was smart enough to get into MIT or some other prestigious engineering school, but when they told him he couldn't specialize in Mad Scientist, he said "screw it, then I'll just do it myself on RU-vid." We should all be thankful that he is documenting everything; imagine the carnage he could be creating if he wasn't being monitored.

Bro did this all in 2 months by himself, basically not possible for anyone else tbh. Very few people could achieve this in that amount of time.

You could actually use Michaels machine as a mount for the Da Vinci robot which would solve the range problem and also make it easier to move if something goes wrong. Michael only needs to make it a bit more precised, for example making it so you could input the coordinates to where C.U.M would be located.

Funny enough, he's not formally trained like.... at all. Pretty much everything he knows he learned from RU-vid and personal research. Smart as hell, no filter, and entertaining for days.

(though not gonna lie, I spent half of the video terrified that the knife was gonna accidentally impale someone and the fake blood was not my thing.) I'm not normally into reaction videos but yours are great--offering interesting info but letting things just be funny, too. and also: your hoodie at the end--- thanks. 15:26 As an undergrad I worked on this laparoscopic AR system, it was totally running late, the phd student whose thesis it was was stressed out and depressed, and then we had some surgeon come in to test it. The surgeon loved it! He was most impressed with some feature that got thrown in as a gimmick, where you could see the percentage of the liver volume left if you removed a piece using the ultrasound probe as a virtual knife. He said he'd use that immediately. Definitely always test it with the actual user, not just developers.

oh wow, I didn't even know that Michael kinda knows his stuff, I thought he was just making a funny video but now I realized he's highlighting legit problems and suggesting some solutions for them although still not usable but at least it's a good start to a brainstorming process that could actually bring a potential usable solution! Totally EPIC !

I'm loving this sub genre of RU-vid, where actual professionals in a field watch RU-vidrs and their videos about it. My introduction to it was an economist and small business owner reacting to Brian David Gilbert's video about making $20,000 dollars a month which, spoiler alert, was a horror sketch based off of a modern adaptation of Dorian Grey. I can't wait to see this sub genre evolve and adapt.

This is a really great video and I'm glad you didn't take it seriously and shared your opinion and knowledge knowing what it was all about. I'm surprised you don't have more subscribers than the other people I've seen doing videos like this.

Having seen the original video before, watching this was hilarious seeing you overestimate what Michael will do so much

From an engineering point of view, a major portion of the cost of a robot like the DaVinci is how much time and effort they've put into making the controls and the machine's articulations match with the hand motions surgeons already know. Which is great for letting existing surgeons work remotely without adding too much additional training to their already busy schedules. At the same time though, a robot which departs from that can also depart from the limitations of the human hand. You can see this in some of the industrial robots now in use, where they have multiple articulations that can bend and move in ways that a hand never could and so can do things which an unassisted human would have severe trouble with. The next level evolution of the technology will be to go from replicating the performance of a surgeon at the table to improving upon it. Ever wish you had an extra hand? You could. There's probably a place for "canned cycles" as well, where the surgeon lines it up and then lets the machine do one, routine thing while continuing on with the bits that require human judgement. This, however would require training and developing one's surgical skills on the machine specifically, which reduces flexibility later. The visual hand tracking has some advantages, but... I'm hardly a surgeon, but I've sutured a wound or two in my life (mostly on animals), and I really, really wouldn't want to attempt it robotically without some amount of tactile feedback. There are technologies on the horizon that can do that via ultrasound, but they're so expensive as to totally defeat the purpose of trying to build a cheaper robot.

As a trauma surgeon, I can't imagine what you were thinking while he was climbing into the path of the high speed motion controlled kitchen knife. "See you soon", maybe?

Despite the fact that Michael's design is basically one giant shitpost, you actually gave me quite a bit of insight on this video since I watched it when it came out. Made me realize that, somehow, Michale was actually onto something xD But no seriously, with what little patience he has, it's amazing to see what he managed to create in such a short timespan. I can't help but wonder if his idea, with some more thought and work put into it, could actually be better than what Intuitive made? Idk, just a random insight I had. As a software developer, some things are not as hard as they look, and others are far more difficult than they appear. Creating 3 dimensional movement using stepper motors is not that hard. It becomes much more difficult to rotate an implement in all dimensions, e.g. like a hand could (think 'going in at an angle'). This is called Inverse Kinematics, which is difficult, but achievable. However, the near-impossible step is verifying and PROVING that your software operates as you intend for it to do.

Obviously a lot needs to be fine tuned, but from what a father of my friend, who has been working in different surgery jobs (I don't know specifics, I'm sure he told me at some point, lol) for about 40 years, said after seeing this, if you added two more points of movement it could actually work as a prototype for a serious surgery robot.

All I'm thinking while hearing all your amazing insight and genuine curiosity, is the freakin' chaos that is gonna ensue when it is finished.

i can see how both the davinci machine and michael's creation can be used together. The 3D vr thing can help with proper wrist movements to the patient where it would have to be more toned to be able to have less latency and such, and having the elevated limbs can help with moving the machine out in cases of emergency. As well as moving the machine to a different part of the patient.

I always love seeing reactions to videos I already enjoy by people who actually know what they're talking about and explain how everything works.

16:20 That is a pretty good line. But also, I'm not a medical pro, but I've heard from EMTs and first-aid trainers that if you have a knife or arrow (or other penetrator) in the body, you leave it in so the hole stays somewhat plugged-up. This helps prevent bleed-out while the patient is waiting for surgery to fix the hole.

The amount of pure JOY this vide brought me .... is beyond compare.

I don't know how I found this video, but as someone who watched everything michael does religiously, watching someone experience his madness for the first time was incredible.

Love the video ! Michael is an inspiration to us all! Just wanted to point out the time in the video where you talk about interactions between the surgeon and the robot and say that maybe Michael's way of handling it might be better. Idon't know if it's a joke, but to add some clarification to it there's a whole part of robotics that studies HCI, and especially in the medical field. Actually the reason why the DaVinci robot is so expensive is partly because of this part, the HCI is very easy and intuitive to use and I think some even have haptic responses (those are one of ,if not , the most challenging part of robotics ) and it allows an accuracy that arguably Michael's robot do not have. Sorry if this comes across as know-it-all ! Great video, loved it !
