Which Shotguns Will Still Work After Deep Freeze? Gas VS. Inertia Shotguns: So what happens when a shotgun gets wet and freezes in sub-zero temperatures? Is there a difference between the performance of gas shotguns vs inertia shotguns? That is exactly what we are putting to the test in this video. With 3 gas shotguns and 3 inertia shotguns, we got the shotguns soaking wet and let them freeze to see which shotguns would still operate fully in this extreme test. Which shotgun do you think wins?

That not a fair depiction of a test because when you take all the shotguns out of the snow at the same time, of course the first shotgun is going to be frozen while the others the snow starts to melt making it easier to shot

-1 is not cold. Owned or operated every type of firearm. Many types of failures, with many variables. The coldest operating temperature was -38c. (Sub arctic). They can all fail under wrong conditions. Most reliable to date is a well used Benelli Montefeltro. Two failures is 20 years. The new fancy, or after factory charging handles are no good.

So what we've learned is to expect that every gun will fail, ensure we don't take a mallet to a seized component and treat guns with respect. If you're going somewhere where climate is harsh, be prepared. Also how can you tell the level of actual ice in each gun and in which component area? Like the enthusiasm though

He’s saying guns aren’t performing because the feed tubes are froze up not because of action issues. It’s kind of a nonsense video. He tried like crazy to get that Benelli to perform, through the Browning to the side and still tried to compare the Winchester and the Franchi for who won. There was a clear winner to me.

Have Win SX2, the original, 10's of thousands rounds thru it, only re-done the springs (recoil, and trigger assembly) once. Also have SBE2, and an A400. A400, too heavy, SBE2, awesome, but inertia,,

Bird hunted 45 yrs 50 PLUS days out of 60 waterfowl season with tons of people. Beretta will always be in my hands A400 is a beast day in and day out.

Yep, I can't agree more. It doesn't matter what you throw at that shotgun, it can handle it. At 63 yrs old I've killed a lot of waterfowl over that time. I also love my Remington shotguns , but the A 400 is in a class by itself.

You can never out do a Winchester. Now I know you did a video and showed the SX4 and Franchi, you picked the Franchi , these test proved the SX4 to be the best Auto loading gun ever. Hands down, no comparison.. I have the Super X1, Super X2, and the Super X3 . Guess what shotgun Ill be buying next. Thats right, Super X4 in 20 ga..

Finally a test I’ve always wanted to see for shotguns. Just to showcase the systems and what they’re capable of. I want to give you a hug for this test but I figured a like would be better. Also I’m not going to lie, there was some satisfaction and laughter when you broker the charging handle off the Benelli 😂

I would love to see these frozen with a live round. Maybe only use .5 floz. on each gun to keep it even? This way we can see how the actions handle the freeze.

Hi Scott, Winchester does not sponsor me in any form or fashion. Gould Brothers used to be sponsored by Winchester but haven't been for a couple years. I had no preconceived ideas on how this video would turn out. Just brought the guns out and shot them, letting the results fall where they did.

The inertia guns really need to be seated solidly against your shoulder to cycle correctly, frozen or not. That’s just how they work. INERTIA

@@THEADMIRALISIN well in all honesty these guys have shot untold numbers of rounds with inertia shotguns over their head, from the hip, and even while doing push ups and the shotguns still cycled a new round in. No shoulders were used for those shots with inertia shotguns. I'm not a mechanical engineer or a physicist so I can't explain it, but they work even when not fired from a shoulder.

Hi, I got an affinity 1 and I adapted a benelli m4 pistol grip stock for it and when I had a bad shoulder injury I found using target loads If I pulled it in super tight with the pistol grip and lent into it to protect my shoulder and absorb the recoil I could stall it nearly every time, to stop this I found with a lighter grip it would cycle fine, when my teenage son goes from his O/U 12g to the franchi which recoils more he tenses up to absorb the recoil and has problems, when he's reminded to relax a bit and take the recoil it again cycles perfectly 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️ weird

@@jonathanhoward1497, those guns did NOT have snow and solid ice throughout the entire working components. Adam Waters suggestion is accurate. Without the solid background of a properly shouldered gun, they are naturally bound to fail. You are talking about a shotgun that is solely spring driven. Therefore, it needs a solid backstop so that all of moving components can function entirely.

I’m curious though, did the charging handle pop out or actually break off? Obviously in both cases that’s a failure of sorts, although beating on firearm parts with a hammer is probably outside of design parameters.

cool test but I think it partly depends on the lubrication you have on the gun and how much, In Montana hunting ducks and geese once it freezes i run them dry and use graphite on the slides

Me and my buddies inertia stoegers never fail during freezing cold muddy duck hunts. Infact my friends m3500 has NEVER even been cleaned after thousands and thousands of rounds. Inertia is the most reliable imo

Great video once again! I would argue that the hottest loads that should have been used were 1 1/8 pheasant loads going around 1290fps. Doubt it would affect the test but just a note 🤷‍♂️. Jan-Feb coldest times in Minnesota, seasons left for hunting are mainly squirrel and rabbit, majority of people use 1oz loads. Doubt it affects anything and this was just a fun test anyways. Baretta a-300 has always served me great after hours in negative temps

@@kellythompson1649 Had great luck among my hunting group of the following, SBE3, M2, A300, A5, SX4, 1012. a few have tried the affinity and none of them had very good luck. lots of issues with minor parts breaking internally and failing to function. but they feel and shoot great when they were working, that was one I hated to see have issues.

I had my beretta 400 in temps that dropped to -19*F. It worked flawlessly for snowshoe hare hunting. But seriously, who TF is going to drop their gun in the water, let it freeze, then hunt with it without first tendering to it? This video test is Bull siht. It shows nothing but a man made predicament that will never occur for everyone else. So, for entertainment value, I give this video an A+. But for realistic situational circumstances, I give it an F.

Went to Wyoming last year. 8 guys 7 Benellis and me with my Beretta A400. 10 below zero. First duck over creek, 7 clicks….. my beretta bang Drake mallard dead Look on 7 proud Benelli owner faces, priceless. Repeated next 3 birds. Was a great day,for me!😂

Honestly the Sx4 is an amazing one built. I've shot an browning A5 and I love it, similar as the Remington model 11 is just amazing built. I knew the 3500 would crap out just because my buddy dropped his in water and it froze over. He did not shot a single round that morning.

All of his tests are dumb that I have seen so far. You cannot replicate field conditions over time. Inertia systems are just nowhere near as finicky as gas operated systems. Especially in super cold conditions or when you don’t clean them often. Go ahead and hunt all day with a gas operated gun in single digit or lower weather and see how it goes for you. Good luck getting a three shot volley off lol.

The bolt handles on the benelli guns just press in with hand force so snacking with a hammer is not advised 😂. Also as someone else said you need to firmly mount inertia guns for the system to cycle properly. The affinity cycled when you shoulder mounted it.

No other tuber has done a mud test with modern shotguns: that would be a hit video if you end up testing it!

I filmed a video this week with different lubricants. First I shot in cold and with snow in chambers and then I dumped way too much dirt and junk in the chambers, but the test was interesting to see. Video should be out next week. 👊 Stay Target 🎯Focused (Hebrews 12:1-3)

Only issue imma say is the inertia ones in you did have the franchi up to your shoulder the first shots then after you did it fired perfect

To give inertia guns a fair chance you need to have them on your shoulder or leg otherwise they are losing some of the recoil energy they rely on to cycle the gun. We shoot Benelli SBE 2s and if you hold them beside you they will jam times sooner than if they have solid backing. My gun basically never jams on me while hunting and I couldn't figure out why it was jamming more when I held it beside me with the same ammo until I thought through it and we did some tests.

Usually like your vlogs. You didn’t show checking the barrel for obstructions? No one with sense would fire a shotgun dropped in snow without checking the barrel. Not a reasonable video.

Did you notice a big difference when you cleaned them how much snow/ice intruded in each firearm? Maybe some of them have tighter tolerances to keep stuff out? It would also be interesting to see an old school gun like an Remington 1187 and maybe a pump shotgun just to see if they are more or less reliable in snow/ice... I would however say the SX4 was impressive!
