My greatest fear in eating surströmming is filleting and gutting the fish, but now I see that some surströmming brands come pre-cleaned. I will definitely have to order the Kallax brand.
It's almost enigmatic to me to see someone properly preparing and eating surstromming. Personally, I'd never touch the stuff because my nose is far too sensitive for my own good, but I've pretty much only seen it when people either are exposing themselves to the smell or eating it improperly.
Surströmming actually not that bad, most ppl eating wrong way and make fun video with surtromming , im eat with onion, bread, purple cabbage, hot sauce drink with beer =]]
I never tasted it but i guess the same thing, if you eat it with bones and skin it will be 100% horrible. there is plenty of food around the world that will be awful wihout proper eating technique.
I think we have seen enough video of Surströmming “challenge“ which is rather childish. I’d like to see more “constructive” video like this introducing how Swedish people eat it in their traditional way.
It is very bad. Oh I have horrible childhood memories of the smell from this when they ate it. I have never been able to understand how someone can like this. I have tried it , several times, but NO!
I have noticed that the surstromming you would actually eat the fillets are still roughly intact and it is mixed with other rich flavours and the flavour makes sense to me in that context. I feel its a bit unfair to have people show videos of people trying to eat a bloated can of the stuff straight. Its like would you eat a jar of mayonnaise on its own....after you left it in the sun?
Derpin Bird exactly!!! I saw one video where the fish looked like a total mess, extremly disgusting. All for the drama, I guess. You must be able to see it is actual fish - otherwise throw away.
Katarina Rombe Too right, theres a buzzfeed video where they got a bunch of employees to eat it straight, the can was bloated and the fish looked like a bunch of guts not fillets. One girl was like "nope, im out" hahha i respect that
I know, everybody likes steak right? Now try eating that raw straight out of the cow you just slaughtered, without washing, with all the blood and hair and dirt on top for flavor, I bet you'd love that! What, no? Then why the hell you try to eat Surströmming the wrong way? Freaking dumb asses. So much need for attention indeed. The slow motion was an exaggeration though, as if you were doing something awful. You were not, you were just eating caned food. :)
Katka, for a moment I thought you had forgotten the sour cream. I prefer the crispbread you can get at some IKEA stores, along with all the flavoured herring and the truly fantastic cheese. Brings back fond memories.
Norske here. We don't have surstromming in our diets but we do have lutefisk!! Fish soaked in lye so the rats wouldn't eat it on the ships to America. I let the Irish part of me choose the fish I prefer- fish and chips and a good Irish beer. Yumm!
The last shot of booze being drunk reminded me of Apetor ! I presume you can buy the fish whole or filleted, I would definitely try the filleted version. Thanks for showing how to eat them. 👍🏻
Katarina you are adorable and I love your video! I have never understood small minded people and love to try foods from other cultures. I hope to try your beloved Surstromming one day!
I have been thinking of actually throwing a surstromming party so me and my family can try it. Just a mental note to open it outside away from everybody's noses. XD
I don't know why I like watching videos of people eat this stuff. But I really do want to try it. I wonder how much it'd be to order it online and have it shipped to the US
I have tried it and would love to eat it again. The smell did not worry me which is unusual because I have a very weak stomach. What does put me off is the cost of getting it to NZ.
@@richardmullins1883 in my drink, truth is it was water. 😅 Among friends it would be some swedish snaps, i.e hard liquor, preferably with some sort of herb.
What fascinates me about surströmming is, somebody would have had to be the first person ever to eat it. That somebody wouldn't have known the techniques like opening it under water, etc, so they'd have to have been hit with the full force of that diabolical stench. And then they'd have said, "you know what? Shag it, I'm eating this stuff!" What would possess someone to try tasting something that smelled like that?
Awesome! After I watching this, I would like to try surstromming as a Swedish authentic gourmet. Lady, you did great job to present this famous food to look good 😊✨ Unfortunately I am Japanese and living in the small house without the garden, so it is difficult to try it though...
I want to try it out, so I have a question considering its smelly reputation. After opening, do you do nothing, just put it on the plate and then eat with bread as shown? I saw some websites recommending to "wash" them on the plate so that the smell goes away. Does it somehow distort the taste and is it necessary at all?
Sorry for this late answer, I totally missed your comment! I wouldn't wash them, but there's no harm in doing it but the smell will remain even after washing. 😊
What is the main taste of this fish??? Sour? Salty? Sweet? if it sold in here ill deffinetly buy it and try many ways to serve this thing like fry, boil, sandwich, and many others untill find the perfect one
The main taste is salty, and besides that something I can't really describe but of course it reminds a little of the smell. Good luck with your project! 😊
Hmm... no, not really... Anchovies are salty also but have more fish-taste to it. Surströmming is salty but not really fish-tasting. Something else, completely unique. :)
would love to try this but unfortunately it's been a decade since i'm vegetarian. i don't really get the bad reputation the fish has, sure it has a foul odor but i'm imagine this to be really good prepared this way
Damn she was downing them vodka shots like a pro. I think it's vodka at least because in another surstromming video i seen before this they were drinking absolut vodka
I haven't had it but it's minus the shitty tasting fish. I would be chugging liquor down as well if I had to walk around with that taste in my mouth hours after eating it
Interesting, I think I'd be down with trying this one day, wonder if I can get it down here in Houston, Texas. The thing I love most about this video though is seeing the inside of a Swedish kitchen, and there's another surstromming video that shows a Swedish family having some kind of out door surstromming dinner party. I like seeing the slices of life in these countries that in my mind are exotic.
It's not possible to hide the taste really, the other things taste good together with the fish. Like when you eat a hamburger you know. 😜 The shots to go with it is an old tradition.
Theman Oje We have a "surströmming premiere" every year in august. Always on a thursday. ☺ Most people eat around that time but it's available in stores all year.
Yep-notice that most of these rather horrible "foods" (like hakarl (rotten shark)) go down easier with vodka or snaps? I suppose you can eat any kind of protein..but this doesn't appeal to me.
I guess every country has its own way of preparing “special” plates which other people may find it repulsive or even foul to eat. Every other Swedish I’ve met speaks highly about this canned fish I guess they’ve been eating it forever so they just enjoy their traditional way of preserving this particular fish.
" yumm very swedidish" wow is the only thing I can think of to say without being rude. I sure don't want to judge someone's heritage or way of being raised. I hope you enjoyed your fish.
In britain we see swedish people as exotic and mysterious, like Caribbean people but instead of easy going sandy beaches and palm trees, yams roasting on coals, swedish have long nights, long days, snow hotels and rotten fish delicacies. It's like anti-tropical, perfectly attractive in it's difference to tory grey britain.
as a Filipino, this is similar to our fermented fish or shrimp. i can eat the whole can for breakfast, lunch, break, and dinner. i wish we had that here.
Funny that the lady says her husband doesn’t allow it to be opened in the house! My wife says the same thing when I eat sardines or smoked mackerel or even Kimchi!!!!
