Surstromming is a Swedish delicacy of fermented herring. It has a famously horrible smell, but this story has a surprising end. Check it out!

Finally someone is just trying fish and not performing on camera. Thank you, Nora for good video and respect to the traditions of a different culture. I also found the smell very distinct and strong, however, fish itself is tasty - good creamy texture with herring-like taste. Rather salty, yet it goes very well with boiled potato, some onion, bread, and a little of sour cream. I have a can in the fridge for Christmas, though I need to admit I am the only one in the house who likes it.

Thank you co much for the kind words, Cyril. When I recorded this video I had no idea there were so many over-the-top pretend-puking videos about surstromming! What a shame; it's certainly not my style.

Great video. There are numerous videos out there of teenagers doing the so called Surströmming challenge which consists of opening a can of Surströmming and eat a piece of it while the aim of that is not to puke. It´s often so ridiculous how they exaggerate their reaction to its smell so its soooo refreshing and nice to see how it really is eaten.
@dumdumdimdimdemdimdum9143
@dumdumdimdimdemdimdum9143 3 года назад
You're actually supposed to open it in a bucket filled with water. This stops the juices going everywhere as the cans are a little bit under pressure, it also keeps the smell inside the water. Kudos to the lady for not wretching lol

Believe me, few people take it very seriously here in Sweden either. When you mention surströmming, most people here regard it as a bit of a joke, but in a good way. The best thing about it is that it always brings a lot of mirth to the dinner party when surströmming is mentioned or possibly even served. Surströmming invariably lightens up the mood in any company

This helped to take the unnecessary pressure out of wanting to present an old swedish custom. No violent reactions like screaming, convulsions or vomiting. Just showing the more or less right way to open the can. There could have been more explanations on the stuff accompanying the fish. What do you drink with it apart from Aquavit? The beautiful woman presenting it made up for the lack of informations, though. Well done. Thx!

Goodness those are some gorgeous fillets, I have heard horror stories of customers opening their cans and finding little more than gelatinous remains with a few bone fragments, but these are premium (I'm unsure if folks are buying expired product by mail order and getting ripped off). This lady's presentation of the product is enjoyable and her demeanor is very professional.👍 I would enjoy trying surströmming, as I do enjoy pickled herring, beef liver&onions, and other strongly flavored foods. I am very eager to give surströmming a try, should the occasion arise, btw EXCELLENT presentation!

Certified Swede here! You eat it on top of flatbred with sour-cream, chives or sliced red onions & slices of cooked floury potatoes. Some put sliced tomato on top. If you chop the herring up first then it can act more as a seasoning for the "sandwich", good for beginners in that you don't get so much in a single bite. Use either dry flatbread and make it into a open-faced sandwich or a fresh flat-bread and roll into a wrap. Some people butter the bread. Maybe some salad on the side?? Perhaps with some spicy arugula. Boiled eggs?? I mean as additional dishes. Enjoy with milk or beer and (preferably) Scandinavian schnapps and together with friends!

Haha, an American teaching a Swede to eat surströmming, that's just hilarious! Kudos! Most so-called surströmming challenges on RU-vid have no idea how this is to be eaten. (Mustard or ketchup isn't necessarily a top hit consumed all on its own, either....) To disprove the Japanese study, I had some friends over for surströmming last month. The first thing the visitors' three-year old son says when I open the can is: "That smells so good!" I can guarantee you, there was no prejudice in this young man.

I think I would be brave enough to try it in the Swedish way, if given the opportunity. I doubt I ever will have the chance, though. My family would just be retching all over the place, ROFL. I have really weird taste in food, though. I'm sometimes partial to a jar of pickled cockles & have also enjoyed slices of processed ham soaked in malt vinegar (as an occasional snack). I've also gone through phases where I'd be obsessed with certain foods; like the time I had raw onions in sandwiches (usually with ham) almost every day, another time when I adored smoked salmon, or when I was addicted to jars of gherkins ... & so on. Not only that, I have to have plenty of salt in my diet (for medical reasons) & I'm used to putting plenty of salt on my meals. For this reason; I honestly wouldn't be surprised if I were to actually enjoy the taste of Surströmming, LOL. 😂

Sorry. But i have no idea where that story came from. It actually dates back in the 1600th where food was difficult to preserve. And when the herring only could be fished in large quantities during the spring you had to either dry, smoke or ferment the fish to be able to use it as food all year around. Northern part of the baltic sea is the only place you can ferment herring without it getting rotten cus the fat content is low enough. Which made the tradition finding it's way to Finland as well during explorations and such! Good video tho! 😊

@@NoraDunn Yea maby 😁 my source comes from the fermented herring/ surströmming academy (yea, that exists 😂) in the high coast land of northern Sweden.
