This should not be surprising to anyone. I’ve always said Safe Streets is a program that pays older black men(35 and over) that have come from prison to not go back to the streets and a life of crime. Most of them don’t want regular jobs and job training. For them at their age, it would be too much “work.” Most are simply unemployable anyway, by choice mainly. The progressive idea is to give people an income - even if they refuse to take a job or job training. Kind of like universal basic income, another progressive program, but this not exactly that. Safe Streets at least uses violence mediation as a front to pay them with no requirement or conditions… So Safe Streets gives them $41-$55ka year and asks them to please don’t commit more crime. It really doesn’t work and most of them are 50 percenters - one foot in and one foot out. Look at the arrests and indictments; those are just the ones that got caught…. There are many groups that do some so-called violence mediation with gangs, but that’s a very small part and it mostly does not work. Brandon’s thinking is he feels that ending the program would take their weekly cash income away and they would go back to crime. And again, many are still involved in crime anyway…
