Sams did not have broth. Sam's had brine. The salt/sodium content is 100 grams higher for Sam's than Costco. This means that Sam's may last longer on the shelf, but will be more detrimental to your health if you are on a low sodium diet. You should drain and rinse the Sam's salt water chicken, the Costco chicken you can actually use the broth. If you're making chicken soup, Costco is the best. If you're making chicken salad sandwiches, Sams might be better after you rinse & drain the brine off.

FYI, modified food starch is a sneaky way to say MSG. And if you Google about “natural flavor” you’ll find that it’s not actually all that natural. 🤢
@thelawnmoerman
@thelawnmoerman Год назад
Modified food starch has nothing to do with MSG. It is used to thicken or emulsify foods. Likely used in this case to add more body to the chicken. Natural flavor on the other hand is only “slightly “ natural so you’re correct there

Hello TCgirl, MSG gets sneaked into many foods these days by calling it umpteen different things!

@@ChefPrepper right, and I am not saying in a survival situation that I wouldn't consume it if that is all there is obviously, but if I am prepping in advance, it's good to know in case someone might need to avoid MSG or the like, in favor of something else they might be able to find that doesn't contain it. Thank you for being open to hearing this without jumping to judgement as others on here have. I appreciate it. I also appreciate your channel! 🙂

I prep mostly with white rice and dry lentils. I have about 1000 pounds of rice, and 1000 pounds of lentils. I use about 2 pounds of lentils a day to cook for my family (we LOVE lentils) so the stock gets rotated out every 500 days or so. When the rice gets about 5 years old, I buy 1000 new pounds of it, and donate my stock to the food pantry;)

Probably not survival food, but we use the canned chicken from Costco to make green chile enchiladas. Layer thusly: tortilla, shredded chicken, Young Guns Hot Green Chile, shredded sharp cheddar. Repeat two or three times depending on hunger level. Microwave for 3-4 minutes on high. Dress up with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and dice onions. Beans on the side if your wish, or a quick Spanish rice. Start to eating time is about 20 minutes.
@ChefPrepper
@ChefPrepper 11 месяцев назад
Hello robedmund, Your recipe sounds delicious! The microwave might not be useful in a true grid-down situation, but, we are not there yet. In such times, make your own flat bread with flour and water as a tortilla substitute, a little powdered cheese and use a camping type of oven and you can still have your enchiladas! Thank you for watching and sharing this recipe.

This was a great comparison, with the Chef Prepper Labs exposing the differences in labeling. You confirmed something I've noticed with other canned meats, in that the Costco meats have always appeared to have more meat packed in a little less liquid. But I'm speaking from casual observation as opposed to your hard data/facts. While I have tons of freeze-dried meats, veges, fruits, dairy, etc. for my long-term preps, I also store a lot of canned goods for every day use and short to mid-term preps. I've never used anything from Sam's Club simply because I don't have one close by (60 miles), but I do have two Costcos within about 30 miles in the Olympia, WA area. I love canned meats for simple recipes or to enhance side dishes that I can easily make into meals, so I really appreciate what you brought to the table (no pun intended) with this one. As always, thanks for what you do. 🙂

@@ChefPrepper Hey Les, I was surprised at what you turned up as well. Your results show we really need to pay attention to labeling and compare when possible. As I stated earlier, I thought I had noticed a difference in the meat to liquid ratio between like products of different brands but didn't think much of it. Something the Chef Prepper labs totally confirmed. What gets me is that I always assumed that "net contents" meant the product (meat) itself, and not the liquid it's packed in as well. Live and learn, eh? 😉

I would rather have it from Sam's due to the modified food starch in the 😮 Costco brand
@Rob-BC
@Rob-BC 11 месяцев назад
One huge detail you failed to notice was the serving size comparison; Sam's was a 3 oz. (84 gm) size, and Costco was a 2 oz (56 gm) size. That skews the results heavily. Secondly, the Sam's chicken was on sale, and reduced from $14.98. Thirdly, Sam's had more liquid in the can, and less meat. Compare apples to apples!

Since I live in the very heart of Sam's Club territory here in NW Arkansas (main headquarters just 15 miles from me), there's not a Costco anywhere. In fact, Costco announced about 2 or 3 weeks ago their plan to build here...yea, that plan lasted about a week before they inexplicably & suddenly pulled out, with no mention of ever returning to NW Arkansas. Yes, the Walton family is royalty here. So, Sam's canned chicken is the choice, by default. However, Keystone (chicken, beef) is my favorite for taste & that is available at Wal-Mart.

Thank you for your video. I'm so happy that I can still "afford" to be fussy. Not that it matters. There is neither a Sam's or a Costco here where I'm at in the Great White North. There's one Costco in the next Province over but they are a bunch of hard asses and won't even allow a fellow a "test drive" in their store to see if you want to pay the membership for the long haul. I was lucky enough to find someone with a membership and got my order shipped right to my door. Just some bulk Beans and they were out of stock with half the Beans I wanted so I doubled up on what they did have. I have 13 meat chicks and two bags of feed left so when one bag of feed is finished, I plan on harvesting the largest birds in the flock and using the last bag of feed for growing out the smaller birds. The eggs I hatch to replenish my small flock of Layers always produces roosters and I pressure can those tough birds up boneless in a quart jar. I don't debone the legs, I just chop the knob off them to make room in the jar and to expose the bone marrow to the canning process. Yum, yum. Then I simmer the carcasses with Onions, Carrots, and Celery, for about three days for the broth. I haven't been canning the meats that I use to can because of the rising prices so I've been buying a lot of store bought canned meats for the storage pantry in the past year or so. Mostly canned Ham, Beef, and Fish because I do my own chickens. Now I'm not one for buying processed Cereals but my dear old Mum likes them for breakfast so I have to stock up on those things before they become "unobtanium", or too expensive to buy. There are great big bags of No Name "Oaty O's" for $5 a bag at the local grocery so I'm going to buy at least four of the suckers and pack them away in Mylar with Oxygen Absorbers. Meanwhile, I'll just keep the rotating pantry going as well. Honeycomb is her other favorite cereal and I have a hard time finding that on sale, but when I do, .... We have a Toast and Cereal rotation going for Mums breakfast with the odd bowl of cooked Oatmeal to change things up. As for the canned chicken, get it while the getting is good. Get it before the old saying of, "Beggars Can't Be Choosers" kicks in eh? Just call me a choosy beggar for the moment anyway. Keep up the great work and good luck.

@@ChefPrepper Thank you for the compliment but it's not for me, ... I'm too "mental". You see, the minute I associate making money doing something, I lose all interest in doing something. Sad but true. Call it my own "vow of poverty" but I only use money given to me freely and unconditionally, ... and that would be social security and the old age pension, all $132 of the pension every month. Thank god because that entitles me to welfare and what would I do without welfare? AKA, Social Security? I call this place the Gulag of Poverty and one must be resourceful here in the great gateless, guardless, prison of despair called the Gulag of Poverty. This Gulag creates the incentive in losers such as myself that would drive us to agree to flip those "for profit" burgers, "serve" those for profit tables, and clean those "for profit" toilets, all for a part time, minimum wage, no benefits, position of subservience, ... and I'm sorry, but I was never good at saying, Yessum Massa". See? Mental. I have my "papers" stating it so too. Besides all this written drivel. So I work on the Ways of the Win/Win and the Economics of Time for the future child. It's the least I can do and were I to be distracted by "work" and that eternal quest for "money", I wouldn't get much done now would I? I'm happy planting my seeds of Win/Win in the dismal and depleted soil of the win/lose with the knowledge that failed human filth makes the best fertilizer. Just don't be the best fertilizer. The Economics of Time are a community owned "not for profit" worth and value of our time and energy based in time alone, backed by the abundance of the world, and built on a foundation of truth and reality. No more lies and corruption of "eternal growth and profit" here where nothing grows forever and "profit" is a concept not to be found in nature. We lived in a world of abundance, not profit. Plant a grain of Wheat and get 14 grains back, that's not profit, that's abundance and "profit" was the method used to concentrate that abundance of the world into the hands and control of the few, the elite, the entitled, and those great winners in a perverted world of childish win/lose. The abundance of our time and energy serves others and we currently allow it. Might be too late for the vast majority too. Seems we have traded our lives for a privately owned "for profit" road of convenience that has taken us so far from all that is natural and organic, such as the ability to feed, clothe, and shelter ourselves, that when this proved unsustainable road of "eternal growth and profit" collapses, we're going to die by the billions. Too harsh? Maybe. Twist your head around this for shits and giggles. In reality the time and energy "spent" in production renders the product paid for. Imagine a free world for free children. In reality, everything we need for our lives and convenience can be calculated in the human time required for production and exchanged for equal amounts of all that "time" produces. I know, that just stinks of true equality and would only be declared "too Commie" by the afflicted. No profit in it they say because they are blind I say. Imagine "how" the abundance of the world transformed into the worth and value of our time and energy would compound annually until the future child was born rich instead of being born an ignorant slave to the lies and corruption called "eternal growth and profit", because Mommy and Daddy were/are. Oops! My "real" crazy is showing! With the Ways of the Win/Win only people with the proven ability to practice and achieve the Win/Win advance to the highest tables of power where the action and direction taken by the people "serve" to benefit everyone equally and not just benefit the few, the elite, the entitled, and the great winners of the world as we do today. Remember, they crucified Christ and almost burned Galileo alive because they dared to question the Status Quo. Now I ain't that mental to believe that I'm anywhere near those guys but I am crazy enough to question the Status Quo. Shamed too, that it takes one such as myself to do so. Where's all the smart and qualified people? Oh yeah, bought off by the system and rewarded well for their compliance. They have too much to lose whereas all I have to lose is my life and that's taken anyway. Nature will see to that eh? OK, I'm ranting again. I pray I've entertained if nothing else, ... Keep up the great work and good luck.

Hello, lusnorthernhome, Usually it is for us, but the labels can sometimes be misleading. The actual meat content of these two was much closer than the calorie content on the label, with Costco actually having slightly more weight than Sam's (according to my unscientific test). Thank you for watching.

But what do they taste like? There are no Sam's Clubs in Canada, anymore, but there is a Costco, if I wanted to drive 1 2/2 hours to get to it. Jon in rural BC, Canada

Hello JonTanOsb, That's a long drive! Actually we have to drive about the same, so, our visit is when we make the drive for another reason and then go to one or the other place on that trip.

I assume the calorie difference is due to white vs dark meat.

Hello mrallan, I am not sure what made the difference, both are supposed to be breast meat from the chicken.

Let you in on a little secret of the chicken biz. Canned chicken is from OLD Layer hens.
@TCgirl

Well, that’s kind of sad. But it does still taste good and gives you protein that you will definitely need. I guess its a good use for old layer chickens.

Hello 8ema, I think you are right and we have some old layers that we have to do something with, Hmm, I think we are going to pressure can some of them. Thank you for watching!

Hello SupaStah, I am glad you found a clear winner for your preps! The color I think had something to do with the additional "stuff" in the Costco chicken. Thank you for watching and commenting!

The winner is the store that is either available to you or closest to you. In WV, there are no Costco Stores, therefore, Sam's Club is the winner.

Sam's Club taste better, n not as salty as Kirkland's brand, Sam's club even looks better n isn't as mushy, so for me I prefer Sam's Club Brand

Hello antoniobressi, I like it, but not as good as freshly made fried or baked chicken, but in times when the fresh stuff isn't readily available, the canned chicken will come in very handy. Try a can or two and see how you like it. Thank you for watching!

In things like soups or chilis with a lot of other ingredients, most people wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. Definitely avoid the whole chicken in a can if you’ve seen those though 🤮

With the people who has kidney disease? We cannot have that MSG in it. So Sam’s would be the one. It’s a cleaner meat. Yep we cannot have that sulfate in it. No it has to be clean. And with me having a kidney failure, the meat has to be very clean no sulfates in it to those names that they try to sneak in their meat has been very lean and very clean. Sam’s would be the one. I’m glad you showed me the test that way I’m gonna go and get me some of that meat.
