Survivor 42 | Know-It-Alls Episode 3 Recap 

I think in one episode Daniel might have tanked career of a lawyer. He found a way to: 1. Fail to understand how the idol works or read the evidence 2. Lose the idol (lose evidence) 3. Make the worst opening statement 4. Indicate his CLEAR favoritism/bias 5. Throw his own counsel under the bus 6. Then agreed to the opposing argument And yes I know he saved himself at that point but he was not kidding when he said he could not win Survivor 42

Chanelle: “I need my vote tonight. Every vote in my alliance matters.” Omar: “All right. Heard you loud and clear.” walks to the wheel Chanelle: “After telling Omar how much I needed my vote I’m sure he will decide to protect his vote, so I’m going to decide to risk my vote. There is no way he will risk after I told him how much I really needed my vote and made it sound like I wouldn’t risk under any circumstances. I just got an extra vote 😏. I’m a genius 🧠 “ Omar: “I can definitely risk my vote. Chanelle told me how much she really needed her vote tonight. She would be extremely sloppy to risk her vote after expressing how much she needed a vote. I can definitely take a risk and get an extra vote. I got this 😏.” 💀 Chanelle seemed to be vying for the worst player of the episode title. She was in deep competition with her buddy Daniel. Lot of bad play this season 😂 Embrace the mess 🥳

Maryanne's always talking funny that when she said that odd phrase no one bat and eyelid and thought it was sus. Surprised to see that Mike even caught it tbh lol

Jonathan with the most dominant performance in a challenge EVER!

The funny part is none of this happens if chennell doesn't make a horrible decision on summit Island. She dead spends time telling Omar I can't risk my vote tonight and proceeds to risk her vote. Can't get anymore dumb.

That challenge looked rough. I kind of got the impression that the currents at the time would have challenged even a strong swimmer. Really shows Jonathan’s physical ability that he was able to carry his tribe in those conditions.

It seemed pretty clear to me that Daniel more or less immediately grasped the situation that Hai had all the leverage and he was going to be forced to switch his vote to Jenny, and so his idea was to get his alliance to co-sign the move so that they(or at least specifically Chanelle who was his #1) didn't feel like he was backstabbing them when he flipped. Where I think things fell apart is that since he knew both Lydia and Hai were going to be sticking around, he wanted to preserve the relationship they had before he just backstabbed them in the vote so he tried to shift all the blame off himself(and he probably felt it was justified by that fact that Chanelle had hung him out to dry by foolishly losing her vote in the first place) as if that hadn't just happened. I don't know if it was possible to accomplish both tasks with some smoother talking, but as it was the execution resulted in Chanelle getting blatantly thrown under the bus at which point she was in no mood to help when he basically begged her to just say "You have my blessing to vote Jenny", even if that was the right play for them both.

The thing is, if more than one person with the secret phrase idols employs the "I will wait for the two other people to say it" strategy, the idol will never get activated!

Daniel lost the argument the moment he said he wouldn't draw rocks. It was a game of chicken at that point and he told Hai he would blink.

Chanelle lied and told the entire tribe that she didn't risk her vote.. so if she goes back and tries to exploit the fact that Daniel threw her under the bus, Daniel could just say she lied to him and pretended she had a vote and that's why he was willing to vote alongside the 4. chanelle had the worst showing imo

Don't you just LOVE it when a smart, sophisticated, patient player who essentially does nothing wrong themselves pays the price for the dumb moves of others? 🤦 Sorry Jenn. You will be missed.

I think the strategic move to say, "I'm going to let Omar think he has a vote, knowing the voting blocks I have tonight, just to ruin his next vote" would have been a funny 4D chess move.

Jonathan reminded me of Ozzy in the Cook Islands, when the Aitu 4 where so far behind people wise. He just smashed the challagenes. But not to forget Lindsey at least carried herself throug the challange. She and Jonathan are challange beasts and Omar and Maryanne are good at puzzles (from the triangels) so they very well might not go to tribal council for the rest of the premerge.

Chanelle caused all the chaos. 1 risked her vote. 2 got paranoid which made hai suspicious 3 mouthed Lydia to Dan in trible which hai saw. 4 when dan went crazy instead of giving him assurances so he wouldn't change his vote and deal with him later for outing her, she went defensive and allowed hai to take advantage of dan's paranoia. She sunk the ship for the alliance.

jenny had so much potential, was rooting for her along with jonathan, omar & hai. insane tribal tho nani

the 3-1 split hai talked about made sense in case jenny played a successful shot in the dark. it protects against mike’s vote bouncing back and sniping someone

Jenny was my winners pick and I do feel bad about the way she went out. However, I thought this episode was very entertaining. I was super worried that the tribes were gonna get swept out to sea during the challenge and then that tribal. Tribe implosion, I'm just here with my popcorn.

Chanelle deserved to be rocked out after that, lmao. I don’t even blame Daniel for putting her in the spotlight. She kinda screwed them.

Daniel made the right choice if he just explains it mathematically to Chanelle and Mike. With rocks being drawn, there was only a 25% chance their alliance would be safe. Everything he said at tribal was an attempt to make it look like he was swinging to the other side.

Give Jenny a second chance!

36:45 I'm pretty sure they cut out the bit of the Beware fine print, it says " *in order to activate this idol,* you must say this phrase at the next challenge." as we know from 41, brad did not say his phrase at every single challenge after he said it the first time until somebody else (Xander) finally found one and said his phrase

The episode was great for all the right and wrong reasons. Sad to see Jenny go and I hope she gets to play again if she wants to. It was a clusterfuck of Tribal given the lack of votes and the conversations that were had. Amazing that they had to force the reveal of the non voting players, but even if production did not, Hai would have pressed for answers. Loved the fact that John singlehandedly completed the challenge. Those waters were really choppy and rough. Good call to have them restart at a "save point". Rob and Stephen, you two did a great job dissecting the episode once again. Always fun to watch Know It Alls right after Survivor!

If Daniel and Chanelle had asked Hai and Lydia to put both of their votes on Mike instead of splitting, Lydia would probably have gone home.

if production is going to keep putting in twists, YOU CANNOT PUNISH THE PLAYERS FOR YOU NOT THINKING IT THROUGH!! Chanelle and Mike were screwed. Now everyone knows that Mike has an idol on his tribe and that Chanelle lied (still not sure why she risked anyway). DOES NO ONE PLAY OUT THE SCENARIOS! first the challenge I’m surprised no medical attention was needed and now this that shows everyone who wants to play, “hey if you find idols or advantages Jeff can just tell people you have them”

I give this episode 6 episodes of Survivor Tocantins.

Last 6 episodes of Tocantins were some of the best

Know it alls should have Probst on for every season finale to clarify points.

One of my qualms with the tiebreaker discussions is that it looks like they only have about 3 min to make a huge decision. I think the discussions would go better if they had a little more time to discuss and debate. I think the short time window may be one factor that led Daniel to give up the negotiation from the start to avoid drawing rocks 2 min later.

When Chenelle revealed she might have lost her vote to her tribe mates at camp, they should have all flipped on Channelle and voted her out

I haven't seen someone dominate a competition like that not only did he win it himself but he drug his teammates with him .

45:00 Stephen: "But why doesn't Mike have to keep Dan happy?" Because it's MIKE'S advantage, not Daniel's. Mike already read the note. Daniel already had a chance to read it. Mike was right in being averse to repeatedly whipping the Beware Advantage out whenever someone wanted to see it, especially given what happened before and during this episode. Daniel is right however; his paranoia (the thing that led to him wanting to re-read the advantage parchment) is definitely going to wreck his game.

I think Chanelle's only move going forward is to announce at the challenge that Daniel is a snake and WILL lie and WILL throw you under the bus. Then back at camp explain to Daniel that the only way she will publicly take that back is if he sticks with her through to the merge. It's a long shot but otherwise she will be going out next.

I haven't seen every season. Has a deadlock on revote ever led to a negotiation among players before? I feel like it should've gone straight to rocks after the second deadlock.

I thought to make the challenge fair to the tribe that completed it the way you were supposed to, they should have given them both rewards instead of having them choose (between the food and the fishing gear). That would have been an alternative to sending both of the other tribes to tribal. Edit: obviously that wasn’t considered unfair enough to do either*

Can someone tell me why the winning tribe from the first water challenge didn't get the fishing gear and the fruit? But the 2nd place got both.... I thought 1st and 2nd got fishing gear and fruit.......

56:41- At that point you need a unanimous decision, Chanelle and Mike could have lined their "votes" with Daniel, and Hai is still in the Dark. Hai and Lydia still wouldn't know who didn't vote, they'd have to try to figure it out later on. Then that cause paranoia at camp, Maybe Daniel reveals Mike's Beware Advantage to Hai and Lydia, and they don't believe him. I think there is so much more that could have happened by not revealing who didn't vote.

Hai and Daniel got to go! He made the biggest mistake of voting Jenny. She was so great in puzzles, I hope they all get voted out except Chanelle and Mike.

Daniel definitely made a bad move by blaming his vote on Channel and should have never even mentioned her. However he should have flipped and not gone to rocks because it was Channel's fault they're going to rocks anyway. Channel made a really bad decision and forced her whole alliance to go to rocks. I wouldn't go to rocks if I was Daniel but he made it look really bad when he called Channel out.

Did Daniel save Lydia or did he just save himself from rocks?

every episode feels like with less content than 41, it's so weird.

i think because they lose their vote they shouldn’t have a reason to have to say it. to the producers it benefits the player to say it because they can get it activated and get their vote back but to the producers they probably see no harm in someone not saying it.

So im curious, is it a rule that the two ppl that were targets (jenny and lydia) dont get to vote? Or is that just bc its assumed they vote each other? Bc it seems like jenny hai and lydia all wouldve been happy to vote daniel after the first vote. No rocks and less risk for those 3 going fwd without daniels craziness

imo it's not so much daniel bad play and more chanelle bad play. She stupidly lost her vote, didn't tell her ally and when daniel tries (wierdly) to check with her to change the vote to stay on the same side she ghosted hin and declined to answer the question...
