On “My Car Story” we're in Rosemont IL at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals on 11-22-19.
We’re looking at a 1969 Dodge Daytona NASCAR # 71 K & K Insurance in Orange Paint. The car features the race version of the 426 CI Hemi V8 engine.
The car's Owner is Tim Wellborn. Tim’s had this car since 1994. Tim shares this real unrestored 1970 NASCAR Grand National Champion Car driven by Bobby Isaac which comes from his museum.

When I first saw these cars racing on Wide World of Sports, I was like, "They look stupid." Now, 50 years later, they are the coolest cars ever designed. THIS would be my ultimate dream-come-true, then a convertible with white interior.

So Kool Lou! A legend! Thanks for showing that one! A little fact I read, as I own a ‘70 Charger R/T 440 Six Pack. The Charger had 10 wins in 1970. More than any other car including the Daytona and Superbird. Bobby Isaac raced the Charger at tracks other than the super speedways, helping him win the championship.

Lou That is a living legend of a Nascar, that is history , living breathing history, I'm lost for words what you are looking at. This should be a shrine dedicated to the K & K Daytona. That is absolutely awesome the Daytona that cracked 200 mph. That Daytona is a god in my world, I would bow before it. Thank you Lou l so so wish I was there. They were not banned. NASCAR simply put engine size limits on the winged cars making them less competitive. Bill France president of NASCAR made rule changes in 1971 limiting engine displacement on special cars which included the Mercury Cyclone, Talladega , Dodge Charger 500, Daytona , and the SuperBird to a 305 cubic inch engine displacement taking away their advantage. Winged cars were run in the 71 season but much less completive due to the rule change. NASCAR'S next agenda was to also place limits on the large displacement V8's making them less completive by the mid 70's.

@@loucostabile I have driven at 345kph/215mph in a Supercharged V12 Mercedes 600 AMG. It was thrilling to say the least. It was Perfectly Legal on the Autobahn where I drove that speed.

In 1969 & 1970 this car was a proven winner, however I'm sure the cars today have improved technology so this car I'm guessing would have a challenge keeping up. Maybe a Viewer with more knowledge could share thoughts?

Tim has a very beautiful and historic car, but he is delusional if he actually believes this car was the 1970 champion......Bobby drove 3 race cars in 1970, the Daytona with an average finish of 20th was his worse car.........the Charger 500 gave him an average finish of 4.7 and the std charger gave him 7 wins and an average finish of 2.73.......he got NO wins in the Daytona in 1970.
