Hi! I just wanted to add that you can say, "Itadakimasu (いただきます)," before you eat. It's translated to "I humbly receive," it's not a prayer, but it's to show respect to the life given so that you can eat and to acknowledge the work it took to get the food to your plate. Traditionally you put your two hands together while you say it, but nowadays people just say it quietly to themself and towards the food. If you're at someone's house and they cooked for you, definitely direct it at them. After the meal you can also say, "Gochisousama deshita (ごちそうさまでした)," which translates to "it was a feast" as a way to thank the sushi chef for the omakase. You can also put your hands together as well for this one, but nowadays people omit the action and just say the words.

May I ask u a question? Excuse my ignorance but why do we have to complicate our dining? We got such a complicated life and in general I wanna just pass by a restaurant, have my food and pay the bill! I don’t wanna jump from my pants caring about mental health of a chief who makes his job done which is cooking! We aren’t living somewhere like a hundred years ago to do whatever in order to be accepted by this or that group of society… Especially when the group of ppl are employees of a restaurant since a restaurant exists for consumers and not otherwise
@rebeccaedmonds6104
@rebeccaedmonds6104 3 месяца назад
@@jilinak I think that depends on circumstance better to know what to do if necessary. Than be ignorant. You don't have to do it all the time, but if put in a situation where you would be frowned at and not accepted better that at least we can pretent, we know as we have watched, the etiquette videos. It's up to u some people don't care and they don't want to change but just to be accepted. Sigh it gets complicated. Just do what you love 😍.
@Xantosdude
@Xantosdude 3 месяца назад
@@jilinak It's an interesting question. Why complicate something that should be so simple? The best answer is that society is complicated. You absolutely have to play by societies rules to be accepted, If you show up naked, the restaurant wouldn't even let you in, let alone serve you. Why wouldn't they serve you if you're a paying customer, albeit naked if a restaurant exists for consumers and not otherwise? The restaurant values customers as a whole and not the individual. Thus if you scare other customers away, they'll make less money and they'll deny you entry. Whether it's by screaming randomly, shooting guns into the air, or being a general disturbance by being naked.
@jilinak

@@Xantosdude having morals and caring of chief sensitivity souls aren’t something similar… My question was more about having and enjoying your food but not thinking about what I should avoid in order to “respect” a guy who cooked this food for me… It doesn’t mean I can come there and insult ppl but it shouldn’t be like oh if I use soya souse now or later just to keep the cook in a mental peace, u know what I mean?

Having eaten sushi in Japan multiple times, it was great to learn the proper etiquette. Thank you! I live in Thailand and the sushi chefs here like to drizzle mayonnaise over the different rolls. I wish they did not do this. It takes away from the flavor.

Jamila, thank you for this video. It is so informative. I do have a question: I have a very small mouth and also cannot swallow large amounts of food. Even a large vitamin supplement may cause choking. Eating an entire piece of sushi is just not possible for me. Is there anything I can do, like slicing the piece of sushi in half? This is what I do when eating sushi at home. 😊

I'm a new subscriber and I love watching your videos since I saw the video I first watched in your channel. ❤ If you'll ever notice my comment, I humbly request guides or email etiquettes, how to buy and dress codes at luxury brands like Dior, Chanel, LV, etc. And maybe parenting etiquette because I'm watching your vlogs with my Mom most of the time while eating snacks ❤ If possible, I would like to suggest meal planning or something? I'm so excited to see more of your videos, Miss Jamila! 😍 Sending loveiiieeess! ❤

Interesting! I was taught to eat nigiri the following way: you separate the fish from the rice and dip it in soy sauce. Then you put a bit of Wasabi on top of the rice and place the fish above. I really love the taste of it and do it ever since. But now I wonder if it would be considered rude to do it at a fine dining or traditional restaurant. Because you said that you should not separate the ingredients from each other. But in this case you put them back together afterwards. What is your opinion about it? I would appreciate an answer, thank you. ❤️
@Xantosdude
@Xantosdude 3 месяца назад
Hello! In a traditional setting, Omakase (お任せ) means "I'll leave the details to you." If you request this and start slathering on more wasabi, it can be quite insulting to the chef after you've just requested his expertise. However, in a traditional setting, usually wasabi isn't given to you on the side to help yourself. The simple reason is that real wasabi is extremely expensive. 95% of restaurants use a mix of horseradish, mustard powder, and green food coloring. Real wasabi comes from the rhizome root and is one of the most difficult to commercially grow root out there. 1kg or ~2lbs of real Japanese wasabi can cost anywhere between $300-400USD. Also real wasabi must be ground fresh using a shark skin or stingray leather NOT metal (as the metal graters cannot be fine enough). That being said, in most other settings, it can be seen as playing with your food to deconstruct and reconstruct your nigiri. It's far easier to take some with your chopsticks and just put it on top of the fish.

Since I have a deep appreciation for the japanese culture and also want to visit Japan very soon I want to gather as much information as possible.
