Would like to combine this with the recent Dirty Civilian video of putting together a scenario based ruck setup. Pick your made up scenario, the Chinese have invaded or whatever. The mission is to conduct an ambush or recon on a suspected enemy base. The locations is 10 miles on foot to the target. Pull up a map, explain what route you’ll take to get there, where you’ll set up camp, etc. and then talk through the packing list.

Even better question, have you thought out the aftermath of an engagement. Most people think about what they're going to do if they have to engage. They don't think through what happens next. Or of the long term consequences of engaging at all. Do you have medical assets to handle the wounded? How do you transport them? Do you have a plan if the adversary pursues you? Again, how do you handle the wounded? How does the group handle being short handed if you lost people. Plus there is a bunch of things you should be asking before you even think of engaging. Will this engagement seriously hamper the group's survival? What are acceptable losses? Can we sustain any losses? Will this draw the attention of other groups of adversaries? If this is a part of a larger force will it bring the entire force down on our heads? All of this and a multitude of other issues have to be considered. As you noted, we are not the US military and don't have their resources. We should scale our operations to our actual abilities. Small groups don't have strategic reserves and should avoid conflict like the plague. Kill one group and ten more who heard the shooting may come to investigate. Or the main force of the scouts you just whacked. And even if you're large enough to have a strategic reserve, you also have to deal with finite resources. You are limited in manpower, ammunition, medical facilities, and fortifications. My thinking is to avoid engaging unless you are absolutely sure of both victory and there are no other hostiles in the area. The mission objective is to survive. Anything that compromises that mission for your group should be evaluated soberly and honestly.
@Wastelandman7000
@Wastelandman7000 Год назад
To clarify, here is a scenario: if you have a group that has twenty potential defenders, you send out 6 men to ambush bushwackers and you loose 4 of them to a superior force and one was wounded in the leg and possibly out of commission permanently, you just lost 1/4 of your total force. Your defenses are now seriously weakened for no gains and the bad guys know you're there somewhere in the area. They will find you eventually, you may drive them off but you will probably take more losses. Which weakens your group even more and makes being overrun next time even more likely. It only takes one bad judgment call to destroy your group. This is what I was getting at about lack of strategic reserves and the need to think things through before you do anything rash.

I'd suggest cashing non essential gear before you move into the final operation zone. In fact in terrain like you have I'd suggest having emergency caches all over the place. If it was sealed in a hard container something like that brushpile behind you would be a good spot. Its visible enough that your guys could find it, yet not something anybody passing through would think to check unless there were fresh tracks up to it.

An excellent discussion. I always point to the fact your pack should be closer to sixty pounds wet to the rally point or patrol base then downsize. A lot of stuff I see on this topic has been tainted by the GWAT. What happens when there’s no resupply or Medivac? How many days will your 20 pound pack last? Why do we do this? It's implicit that if you own Panos, mawls, KAC's, you've either been educated on the topics of combat, and or have your kit ready to go. It's all implicit. Idk when our community decided that everyone who invests heavily in kit has either zero training, or is a 50yr old, overweight dad, with zero preparedness. If you're investing in courses, you're physically fit enough to hike. Idk when these topics became mutually exclusive to the point that we consistently need to discuss the presumed things that guy's aren't doing, based off of their combat load out. *"What do you know Kid"* don'tet the douchey image fool you, I'm 37 a prior GOON, with the most Gucci MOS you've ever encountered; I promise! Prior Beret, that may or may not of ascended to CAG; it's the internet, so who knows? Founded a SERE academy in WA state, etc, etc. Though the discussion is fine, and I really like the idea of *"stump talk"* these topics are nothing more than a way to cater to the presuppositions of your community, that presumably do not own a LMT/KNIGHTS, MAWL, Panos, etc, and a means of reinforcing their shortcuts made on their purchases, by the implication *"I don't have all this nice sht, but I have a minute man bag, I train and I bet they don't."* We all do, so these discussions are kinda irrelivant, and it's ridiculous to presume a guy that has a $50k loadout, doesn't have a pack, ready to go. I see this logic alot online, and it's only done by those that desire to justify their inability to heavily invest in kit. 99% of us are avid hunters. If you can trek through the woods with an elk on your back, a pack and a rifle are fn nothing. Just becuase I own a set of Panos, I run mawls and KNIGHTS rifles, doesn't meant I don't have a pack ready to go. I get why this video exists, and like I said earlier I really like this *stump talk* I have idk why we feel as if it needs to be said. I really think I need to create a channel. Though I enjoy this content, aside from the military investing an obscene amount into me, I am now am analyst for the largest investment firm on the planet; Goldman Sachs. In 30 seconds I could completely shatter any presupposition people have on the reality of preparedness. I am a literal expert in geopolitics, and I swear to God, if you live in the West *YOU WILL NEVER EXPERIENCE HARDSHIP* beyond a natural disaster, and there is no conceivable scenario in which I would need to grab my go bag, and head out for the shtf in America. Now I currently live in Tokyo, and unquestionably it will happen here within the next decade, not in America though. Maybe host me on a live stream someday and I can break it down eloquently and articulatly to this community. I promise within 5 mins I will make the majority of you feel as if you've waisted decades of your life; again, this coming from someone that is a survival instructor, that has attended BOSS! Boss is a 45+ day survival school where they drop you off in the desert, and you are expected to survive with nothing but what's in your pockets. Guys, excluding something biblical, you will never need your go bag in America, your life is so perfect, you're required to invent reasons to be concerned. This is a hobby, this is a lifestyle, and there's nothing wrong with this, but recognize you are delusional to belive it's a viable skillset, needed in the 20th century, in the richest, safest, most powerful country in our world's history. Our nation has cultivated the greatest warriors our planet has ever seen. Just our geography prevents the west from ever falling. I'm a weirdo conspiracy theorists Christian as well, but trust me excluding the tribulation, none of us will ever experience hardship in the west. I make an obscene amount of no et predicting trends in the industry, so trust me when I say it will never happen.
