Just take your time, have a copy of the manual and you'll be fine. I have another video of the entire top end install, not sure if I covered any additional information. Good luck, let me know how it goes.
@@TomsTinkeringandAdventures Will do I'll check out the other video. Doesn't look too bad and like you said the manual is helpful. Just waiting on parts now I'll let you know how it goes.
@@TomsTinkeringandAdventures Cheers! Looking forward to cracking open those beers once I get the parts delivered, fitted and the engine running sweet again after turning it over by hand. Previous owner stripped down engine to replace bearings etc and didn't apply loctite, bodged the locking washer pin or failed to torque down the cam sprocket bolts. One got shorn off and the dowel pin went AWOL - digging around in the RH casing to fish it out. Your video is exactly what I needed. Beers on me if we ever meet!
@@igotakai5644 well…I guess it’s been like that ever since!! My friend still has this bike, might have to take a look and see if it has caused any issues.
@@TomsTinkeringandAdventures you would definitely know it if the pin came loose but it's certainly worth a check. Maybe make a video and RTFM ;) haha Glad to hear he still has it. My first bike back in 2005 was a 96 DR350. Just picked up a 1990 and a 1997 package deal. Hopefully I'll have a runner in a few days.
@@igotakai5644 sometimes you get lucky and your silly mistakes don’t bite you in the butt! I’m still going to take a look, he has been having issues with the bike not running great. I don’t think it’s eaten the timing pin but now I’m curious. Will update…might be a bit because I’m traveling now.
@@TomsTinkeringandAdventures thank you for the info. I’ll look around for the kit. I just picked up a 98 DR350 on Sunday. I was told a few months ago it “made a funny sound” and they shut it down. So that basically means I should crack the case and inspect the whole thing. I figured while I’m in there just do the big bore and cam. I’ll keep watching your channel. Your info has been extremely helpful!
@@richardoconnell9165 late model DR’s had a balance pin issue, I showed that on one of my videos here…just something to check. Best of luck and let me know what you find out.
@@TomsTinkeringandAdventures I tracked down what happened to Thumper Racing. They closed in 2020. One of the former staff, a fellow named Kevin, opened his own shop called Built Motors based out of Minden, Nevada. In case you need future parts.
I’m guessing that you must have an aftermarket cam? If you can figure out what kind it is, maybe the company has information on how to set it. Let me know what you find out.
Hello, I'm asking from Puerto Rico. I recently changed the cylinder and cap gaskets. The engine starts without difficulty but pulls compression through the carburetor. what could be the problem?
The first thing I would suggest is to double check your cam timing. It's pretty easy to get the cam chain one tooth off, the bike will still start and run ok but it could cause an issue similar to what you're describing.
Hi there, I'm to put together a DR350. However I'm struggling with the valve adjustment. If I follow the instructions, having the cam set at "T". Then the valve clearance seems to end up way too much and the engine doesn't start. I know it was a while ago, but do you remember the camshaft position when you did the valve adjustment? Best regards
Lisa Guldager the “T” mark will be visible when the engine is at TDC (Top Dead Center) on both the compression and the exhaust stroke. Watch the valves open and close as you turn the engine. As the intake valve opens and then closes, slowly turn the engine over until the T is in the window. That should be the compression stroke, which is where you need to set the clearance.
Harrison High when we did a valve adjustment, noticed wear on the lobes. It was ran that way for a few thousand miles, maybe would have lasted forever but not worth the risk.
I'm trying to get my chain back on my cam but the chain is super tight with 0 slack and will not fit on. It's a brand new chain and the same size as my old one. Am I doing something wrong?
@@TomsTinkeringandAdventures turns out the chain was skipping a tooth down on the gear where is connects to the crank. Thank you though, video was super helpful.
@@TomsTinkeringandAdventures thank you! However I'm having a new issue now. I seem to have no tension at all in my clutch cable. Do you have any idea what may cause this?
