Up for test is the SVS PB-2000 Pro Subwoofer. Details can be found at the manufacturer's page. I have taken the liberty to provide an overlay of a comparison against the Monoprice Monolith THX 12 (in ported mode, THX EQ) because I have gotten many questions regarding how the two compare. In a nutshell, the two are pretty closely matched with the edge going toward the Monolith in terms of response linearity and max SPL per the CEA-2010-A/B standards. However, the SVS provides built-in Bluetooth connection for settings controls in addition to those found on the back. Additionally, with the BT app you can also access 3 bands of P-EQ which, IMHO, is a notable feature and may be a deciding factor for some.
You can find the CEA-2010 test results spreadsheet here:

Thanks for watching.

Don’t have any audibility data, but you can plot the frequency wavelength time on the graph and this is usually just referred to as 1 Cycle, and usually they do a 1.5x multiplier for 1.5 Cycle as well. So, if it’s at 1 Cycle, then the time it takes to start playing is delayed by 1 cycle. Ideally, it would be a flat line, so all frequencies start playing at the same time. Since one typically phase aligns at the crossover point, you are mainly going to normalize it to say 80Hz and see how delayed the 20Hz-40Hz region is. I mistakenly used to think it was decay, but it is just delay.
@ErinsAudioCorner
@ErinsAudioCorner 3 года назад
I looked in to that but I've not had luck yet exporting the GD data in a manner that I can then again import it in to REW. In fact, IIRC, I can't import GD at all in to REW. I would have to generate an IR directly with REW. I may do that next time. Or talk with Klippel to see if they have a recommendation (or, assuming it's within my capabilities, dump the raw data and generate it myself). At any rate, thanks for the reminder on that. :)
@homeboi808
@homeboi808 3 года назад
@@ErinsAudioCorner Yeah. Not in REW, but you can easily do it in Sheets, just make another column with the formula =1000/Hz for 1 Cycle and =1500/Hz for 1.5 Cycles.

Hey, so I think I can shed some light on the bumpy FR curve - all of it is hiding in plain sight, as it were. The long and short of it is that SVS has a parametric EQ bump around 15-16 Hz tuned to let the FR hit F3, bounce off, and then come down again. This is how they're getting to the specified 16 Hz low extension number, at least as long as power and Xmax hold out. The proof is in the group delay chart (6:05). Any time you boost the woofer's output, there will be a rise in group delay. This happens acoustically or electronically. You can see the first boost at around 22 Hz, which is the port tuning. It starts dropping off again below that, until it slams into a heavy-handed parametric filter that is boosting the absolute hell out of the output, with the attending jump in group delay. You'll notice this lines up very closely with the lower peak of the impedance chart (11:00). Apparent amplifier power load bottoms out here, which leaves more amplifier headroom for the parametric boost (to a point). The actual maximum output curves (9:35) reveal the natural behavior of the subwoofer when there's no more headroom to run the parametric boost and naturally the sub is down at 17 Hz much more than the low power FR curve would imply. As an added curiosity you can eyeball what the sub's natural behavior ought to be by using the parameters for a Peerless XXLS 12 (and of course you have the real T/S parameters from the Klippel). The box is much too small to provide the specified extension on its own.
@Promit
@Promit 2 года назад
I wanted to double check so I grabbed the T/S for the latest Peerless XXLS 12 (P830845) in WinISD and dropped it in a 4 ft3 box tuned to 22 Hz. Drop in a parametric boost (17 Hz, +8 dB, Q=3.0) and the model will pretty much produce a PB-2000 Pro. SVS's driver and filters are more tightly controlled than my eyeballed approximation, but it's basically right there.

Wondering if I should look at the 13”. I only keep my subwoofer level at 25% otherwise it shakes the house apart lol. Imagine what a 13” or 16” SVS Elite subwoofer can do? @@1L3g3nd I mean like he said in the video the 3 PEQs are pretty useful for toning down some peaks in your room from room modes changing the frequency response at your seats. Those PEQs are a set it and forget it thing with the only reason to revisit the app after you've finished initial setup being after moving the subwoofer to a different location or if you request from SVS the port plugs to allow the ability to switch it into sealed mode.

Nice technical review as always. Love seeing the driver test results. That dip with the high group delay increase probably is a result of a bigger box than optimal, to make the port diameter bigger or to shorten the port. Does the port not wrap 90degrees around the back like the monolith?

I threw the T/S in to winISD and kind of came to the same conclusion; but I didn't want to assume too much so I left my assumptions out of the review. The ports are straight. Not bent.

Forgive me if this has been suggested before. You do an impeccable job of real life comparisons that incorporate objective and subjective viewpoints. As your viewer, I greatly appreciate the work you have invested into these videos. My biggest AHAH! moment thus far is when you take the results from previous videos and graphically overlay them into the current test results. It is AMAZING to have that visual for reference. I feel those overlays are meant to prove a point about how much better sound you get, the more money you throw at the sound. I was wondering if you could finagle another comparison. Since those overlays are relative to the money spent on the subwoofer, what about comparing equal $$$ spent? Example: Monoprice 12 inch budget sub @ $100 but FIVE OF THEM, compared to the Monoprice Monolith that costs $500 dollars? Perhaps the true apples to apples comparison could entail taking cost fully into consideration? If I have $500 to spend, do I get a $500 sub? Do I get two $250 subs? Do I get five $100 subs? How hard would it be to actually test this?
@ErinsAudioCorner
@ErinsAudioCorner 3 года назад
Well, it's pretty simple. Simply adding like speakers provides you an additional 6dB for every doubling of speakers (3dB per doubling of drive units, 3dB per doubling of power; which would be 6dB per every doubling of subwoofer). So, for 5 total subwoofers, you get about +15dB (or so) compared to one subwoofer. Problem is, with cheap subwoofers they simply don't have much output on the LF. So you're going to have to add that many subs to match the LF output but the 50-100Hz region will be too high and you'll need to pull that down via EQ. It's an idea... and it would help to smooth out the room response. But a lot of the budget subwoofers just won't go down to 20Hz no matter how many you put in a room.

One question. Have you experienced limiter kicking in while playing single sine wave and changing volume? (Externally) I have experienced this in pipe organs in my Svs 3000.
@ErinsAudioCorner
@ErinsAudioCorner 3 года назад
When I was testing this subwoofer (and every other one before it) I have experienced amplifier limiting. Certainly done to keep consumers from blowing a speaker. It was more noticeable in the middle band (40-80) because that's where the natural bump for *most* subwoofers is (especially the cheaper ones that don't have much output below 40Hz). My testing stops when a distortion threshold is crossed and that happens at lower input voltage for lower frequencies than it does for higher so to keep the amp from overdriving the woofers the amps are limited. Haven't come across one yet that isn't made this way. For example, this particular subwoofer never got above 114dB no matter how much input voltage I fed it between a certain few frequencies.
@adrianegowski5012
@adrianegowski5012 3 года назад
@@ErinsAudioCorner , thank you. My experience with it is that when i play e.g. single 20Hz tone it is clean (at least to my ear). But when i start lowering/rising the volume I can hear the limiter. Even if at target volume sine wave sounds clean. That was very odd to me. If not pipe organs I'd never hear this. My guess is that because of lowering/rising volume I introduce additional frequencies (which add up to basic 20Hz) and because of that limiter is limiting the current and therefore the noise. Just wanted to ask someone more experienced. SVS responded to me "stop listening to sine waves, start listening to music". Well, they are right :D

Iv'e personally have had a bad experience with the SB1000 in terms of transients. I agree there is no exact science to transients, I've even had experts in the industry swear that there is no such thing and that it is a mid frequency phenomenan while others mention that group correlates with the subs overhang. I've also had many say that groupd delay has nothing to do with the transients. From my experimentation with closed subs the lower QTC definitely gives less overhang and more punch. You have reviewed the Rhythmic sub and curious in terms of a subjective take on listening to some techno how does the Rythmic compare to the SB2000?(Rythmic website states a QTC of .3) Also, can you shed any light on the ported alignment of teh SVS? Unfortunately SVS does not provide any information on that.
@ErinsAudioCorner
@ErinsAudioCorner 3 года назад
Oh, man, I wouldn't be able to remotely recall my experience with the Rythmik subwoofer to be able to make a comparison. I will be reviewing the SB2000 (and SB3000) soon but won't be able to make a comparison against the Rythmik. I can provide some impedance data, though. When you ask about shedding light on the ported alignment of the SVS, do you mean what's inside? If so, it's just large flared tubes. Standard ol' ported stuff.
@Trdat
@Trdat 3 года назад
@@ErinsAudioCorner What I mean does the Klippel system tell you if its a SBB4, QB3 or some other type of ported alignment? This will give us an idea about how transient it is. To be honest, I have DSP and curious about the transients as I can play around with frequency curve and rather get info about the overhang(I suppose personal preference when comapring subs) but I think it should be a standard in testing. Many in the forums correlate transients with subs that have less bass down low(it seems this is the closest I have come to understanding transients from the forums), and I've experimented and although you do lose some transients when flattening out the curve with DSP in sealed cabinet it still is very transient as the box's original alignment was a low QTC. Anyway, pity about not being able to compare it cause the Rythmic is known for its transients with its direct drive technology. In any case, if you can keep an eye out regarding transients with the higher SVS models comaparing them as you go up even if its is subjective would be appreciated. All I did was put the cheapest driver from Dayton in a sealed box at a .65 QTC and it blew the SB1000 out of the water of course subjective and purely based on its transients so I am curious if the SB1000 is made for the one note bass to get more bass out of a small cabinet and that perhaps the higher models have allevaited this comprimise?

Hey Erin, have you heard of the C-Note speaker diy kit from Dayton Audio? I've built it for a friend and it sounds really smooth for the price and measures pretty decent, too (as far as I've seen). Would you be interested in reviewing a c-note kit?

Far to many subwoofer reviews wasting my time with unpacking followed by a bad recording of the sub playing a movie soundtrack. Then concluding this beast of a sub is great because it rattles my house even at half gain. Erin's way is definitely the right way. Anyone who doesn't appreciate the scientific approach can easily find subjective reviews from other sources.

Hey, i have a SB2000 in a 5.1.2 setup but im not totally satisfied by it and i think i should have bought a ported one. Do you think i will make an upgrade or a downgrade if i exchange the SB2000 for a PB1000 Pro model? Will i loose something?
@keepitshema
@keepitshema Год назад
I have one sealed and one ported and they matching to each other(I did some eq and checked a phase). The sealed one(sb1000pro) dips down very well and kicking in chest too but there is lack of “fullness” which I hear from the ported one(monolith 12). That’s way I am changing the sealed for the ported-just I am still thinking if I should stay with my monolith and buy a second one, or should I sell both and buy 2x pb2000pro.
@AexoeroV

@@keepitshema I see, thanks for your info. I should go ported too but i need to sell the SB and lose money on it and then add a lot of money to buy a ported, they got more expensive here in my country.

@@AexoeroV pb1000 and pb2000 is a big difference in power and a lower extension. In UK svs are very expensive too, I would even consider a refurbished one if I could found. If you want cheaper, monolith 12 is a strong option for you(more power than the svs pb1000pro - 325W vs 500W) if you can find it😅 but there is no app which svs offers you. If no one buy both of my subs I think I will go for another monolith 12 and svs will be just lying unused until is sold.

The dip at about 26Hz looks like it may be the natural roll off of the driver, with a bump where the ports take over to provide extra extension. That's what it looks like to me, anyway. Maybe someone else has a better idea?

I then asked SVS the same question, they all make these subwoofers in China. I don't think the location has any effect on the quality of the subwoofers.

PB2000Pro or Monolith 12" ?
@ErinsAudioCorner
@ErinsAudioCorner 3 года назад
If you have DSP already (such as with Audyssey XT32 or Dirac Live) then the monolith might make more sense for you. If you plan to listen in a stereo setting and have no DSP then the SVS' built-in DSP is great to help tame room modes. Just depends on your needs.

It looks to me like the Monoprice 12 is better than the SVS PB-2000 for $100 cheaper. I guess the biggest factor besides initial price is warranty and customer service.
