My thoughts on the SVS SB-2000 Pro sub. So many things to say, I surely didn't cover it all, but I think you'll more than get the gist of it. I didn't talk too much about how it not only adds to the bottom end, but it also makes for a more palpably full sound, even in music where the bass is not front-and-center, like acoustic music. It adds a sense of ease and space.

Hi Tim, saw your review on Steve Guttenberg's site last year. After watching your review of the XLS1002 and others I jumped in and got a pair @$289 each. They're driving .7 Magnepan. Also saw you have the Schiit Freya S preamp, so do I! I just upgraded my SVS SB1000 using their one year upgrade program to two SB1000 Pro subs. Whoa, what a difference and having that app makes setup so easy even with the phase issues with two subs.

Great video, I am running Kef Ref R400 sub, not a HT sub, and is under powered.(Great music sub with my Kef Q950's) Added a preowned Paradigm ultracube 12, meeeh! not a good mix. Great job on your thoughts and impressions including the DSP app. Until now I was "gung ho" for one SVS SB 4000. After seeing your video last week, I checked out a heap of dual subs on You Tube. I now am convinced watching your video a second time that dual is the way to go. I am having all sorts of problems with Bass, even with Dirac Live using my NAD T758. Getting 2 SVS SB 3000!!! and looking forward to an out of body experience!! keep up the good work

Thanks! Yes - two (or more!) is the only real way to help fix bass issues. It takes patience to get it set up right, but the payoff is worth it.

For listening to music, did you have to locate the subwoofers forward of the left and right main speakers? Is there a delay that you can hear ?

I strongly believe whether it is SVS subwoofers or other makes probably the 1,000 or mm if you go dual is better than going with the huge door size up just one subwoofer it's more important to go smaller Subs but two of them and you'll get better balance sound what do you like bass a lot or not as much you can set it to how you want it enjoy it so.

Just ordered an SB-2000 Pro to replace my SB-1000 and am pretty excited. Any tips regarding the APP? I have a huge room gain centered at 35hz which makes any sub sound like a 1 note wonder, and I hate what Audyssey does to my speakers, so the Pro's onboard EQ should be great. Nice review.
@timbathras2660
@timbathras2660 4 года назад
Thanks! The app has two options that can help with that room gain - #1 the room gain compensation and #2) the EQ. First, I'd try turning on the room gain compensation, try both the 31 and 40Hz settings. Then after listen to that for a while, you can try the EQ (remember to turn off room gain compensation, you won't want both on at the same time); Perhaps set band 1 (PEQ1) with a center frequency of 35Hz, a boost of -3dB, and a Q of 2. You could then play with the boost and/or the Q (the higher the Q number, the shorter the band around the center frequency it will affect, but this can sound odd at extreme settings, and can make seats other than the sweet spot sound real funny). A lower Q will sound more natural, but could roll off more than you want.

@@timbathras2660 what's your subwoofers settings and avr
@timbathras2660
@timbathras2660 4 года назад
Waymon French I don’t have an AVR, I’m using an SMSL SU-8 DAC, Schiit Freya S preamp and a pair of Crown XLS 1002 power amps. My sub settings will differ *drastically* from what will work for you. I have the high pass crossover on my main speakers set to 80Hz and low pass on the subs is 80Hz as well with a 24dB slope. This caused the least phase issue at the crossover point for me. The front sub I have set to negative polarity. The rear sub is set to default positive polarity but with phase set to 37 degrees. Again, this was to align the phase of both subs at the main listening position. I also have a slight negative EQ at 25Hz to remove a little ‘room boom’ on both.

Hello you stated that dual subs are the way to go. I have an SB 3000 and a lesser paradigm 12 inch driver sub. Is it possible to integrate 2 different subs well? My room is 12 X 10. Any input from you would be appreciated.
@timbathras2660
@timbathras2660 3 года назад
It is possible to integrate different subs - however - it's not very straight forward. First, they really both need to be either sealed or ported (it is very hard to mix ported and sealed). Second, if they have wildly different group delays, it might not work well. Thirdly, you'll be limited volume-wise to the least capable sub, otherwise, you very well could over-drive the less powerful sub and either just get poor sound or even blow it. Really, if I were to mix two different subs, it would be more to fix a very specific problem in a very specific spot (i.e. if you have one seat in your room that just has no bass at all, or way too much), and probably just for movies. BUT - you just don't know unless you try it out. Every room is different, every sub is different. If you already have the gear, why not play around a bit.

The sub on the back wall; is it firing into the couch? Which direction does it fire?
@timbathras2660
@timbathras2660 3 года назад
The direction doesn’t matter as long as there is a couple inches between the woofer and the nearest surface so it can ‘breath’. Bass this low is omnidirectional, there just needs to be a little clearance for the woofer to move the air.

@Tim Bathras Hello Tim. Just get to know about you from Steve Gutenberg's recent video. As you mentioned in the video that you had PS Audio M700s. How does they compare to Crown XLS 1002? Can you please explain in detail. I am thinking of getting a Crown 1002. It would be really helpful if you can tell me how do crowns compare to high end gear like PS Audios. Thanks
@timbathras2660
@timbathras2660 4 года назад
The last time I was able to do an A/B comparison was a few months ago, so I can't give great detail about the differences. What I can say, is that for the Magnepans I'm driving, I found the differences to be minimal enough that I had no problem switching to the Crowns, especially because of the feature set they have. The real question is: is the price difference of over $2k (for a pair of M700 vs pair of 1002's) make any difference to your budget? If the extra $2k is no issue at all, then giving the PS a try might be worth it, but that will depend on your setup and your needs.
@HarshKumar-ts9mu
@HarshKumar-ts9mu 4 года назад
@@timbathras2660 Gotcha. I guess if you are finding Crowns matching well with with an Electrostat which are extremely clinical in nature, then I guess they will go with any type of speakers. As the Electrostats have best mids and highs compared to any other type of speakers, and that you don't see much difference in PS Audio and Crowns, then I don't think any other type of Speakers can show any difference. Am I right?
@timbathras2660
@timbathras2660 4 года назад
@@HarshKumar-ts9mu Maggies are planar magnetics, so they are different from electrostats. I have not heard any electrostatic speakers before, so can't comment on the difference between them. There are difference between the amps - but what you hear and how much of a difference will depend on your speakers, source, room, and your ears. Both products come with return policies (you'd want to verify with the store you might buy the Crowns from) so you could/should try them both if the cost of the M700's is not a factor.

Since the SB2000 Pro is so good, the SB3000 is not worth the extra price in sheer LF performance?
@timbathras2660
@timbathras2660 4 года назад
It all depends on your room, your listening preferences, and your budget. I have not heard the 3000 line personally. If the extra $$ for the 3000 is no issue at all, then it may well be worth it. If the 2000 Pro is already a stretch, it won’t disappoint.

@timbathras2660
@timbathras2660 3 года назад
Yes, I am. It’s actually on my to do list to take measurements from the back row of seating where we watch movies from and setup one of the built in DSP presets for that arrangement on the subs. Right now they are just optimized for the main listening position and that yields fine enough results for the theater seats.

REL subs are amazing but head to head, it’s an apple vs an orange. SVS is a powerhouse with speed and power for a harder to control and larger space. In my smaller stereo listening room, REL is just perfect. REL does music and does it really good. SVS does music and does it really good. Delta is the SVS does what the REL can’t.

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate your comments. I’ve been trying to show the product in question more as I do more videos, as I enjoy seeing them in other’s videos as well, but frankly sometimes I just forget. I’ve also tried to cut down on length and get to the point and deliver more information in fewer words. It’s harder than it seems, at least for me. As for sound demos, I won’t be doing those as there is little objective value in them. I understand there is great entertainment value, but a true judgement of the product cannot be made, in my opinion, on a recording of it. Thanks again for taking time to watch and leave your thoughts.
