Links to everything below. Yes it's a long vid but I cover the main points on catching swarms . This is one take, no editing... a few things I forgot to mention: YES, the frames hang over dead space below them, This design is ~34 Liters.
Hope it helps. Hit "Like" if you like. Constructive comments appreciated too ! Thanks and Good luck !

I have been catching swarms for about 8 years. Your video has encouraged me to try this size box.I generally use 8 frame deeps with pretty good success, for larger swarms. The box You use should be perfect for swarm of different sizes. The tips were great and thanks for sharing with everyone. Good luck with the traps season!!

The ventilation needed depends on where you are and the time of year. So vents with the plugs that can put in or taken out like you have sounds like the best way. That way if the weather is hot you can change the amount of ventilation for the weather.
@AvocaSingleTrack
@AvocaSingleTrack 4 года назад
Yes. That's exactly what these do. They can be removed. They have a few 3/16" holes drilled in them for minimal ventilation while in...I take them out when I catch a swarm.

@@AvocaSingleTrack I have seen some videos where they put 2 1.5 in holes with no plugs. I think that would only work in the summer and in the south.

Very cool and informative video. Thanks for taking the time to share this one. I now know that probably my biggest mistake of hanging swarm traps last year was that I was probably extremely over zealous with the lemongrass oil and swarm commander. You're not the first one to tell me this. I just wished that I had heard this advice sooner. Oh well, live and learn :-)

Aloha Steve Adel. This has gotten my brain percolating. I remember when I started out trying to trap swarms I said why not a nuc box. Did this without reading. I had gotten tired of doing a cut out of the pulp pot swarm traps. Said why not with frames inside. make it easy. I too like the lazy person approach why work hard when the bees should be able to do the work for you. Of course the nucs didnt work. I think so far I have seen them accept a DCoats nuc only once. I also kept fish so I quickly came to the realization that the nuc is about 5 gallons and it seems that bees want about 10gal. Why not then a double nuc. Had that though in the back of my mind. Can see that this way everything can be cut on a circular saw or table saw. no need for dado blades, routers, etc. one kind of wood. Easy and elegant. Mahalo for sharing.
@AvocaSingleTrack
@AvocaSingleTrack 6 лет назад
I mention D Coates Nuc as a basis for the design, but you add 5 to 7 inches to the depth, making it approx 33L..find a D Coates plan that you like and just make it taller. There are D Coates Nuc plan that have no dado cuts. Thanks Sir !

Nice job on the video. I applaud the use of the computer to make several great points. Not having too much access to areas like you, and living in a city, I've had the most success setting a couple of swarm traps out just in my back yard on the ground (no trees available on 1/3 acre). Last year I had two swarms move in to the traps and got to see both of them arrive. Great fun in swarm trapping no matter how you go about doing it!
@AvocaSingleTrack
@AvocaSingleTrack 6 лет назад
You have to consider what your traps are competing against. Out here, i'm competing against the real thing, Large tree cavities in forests with tall trees. I'm in rural suburbia. Woods behind me, the river...I can see the mountains out my back window. Where you are, the bees may have less options, so your trap may be the best option for bees. In a city, you might also be catching swarms out of other beekeepers hives. At least you are able to get some and yep they are alotta fun for sure !

You might find your bait lasts longer, is never too strong, and you have to use less if you put a cotton ball or piece of paper towel in a 1qt zip lock bag and poke several holes in one side of it. Lay it on the bottom with the holes facing up. OR, you can put a cotton ball into a slurpee (wide) straw, close one end and pit it somewhere inside. Both seem to work well.

as a beginner i done quite a bit of reasearch before i attemped this. I caught 4 swarms in my swarm traps w/lemon grass oil.the height i set my traps was about 4.5 to 5 ft. 3 of them the other one was 16 inches off ground. all entrances faced south to south east. wasn't a bad catch for a beginner i thought.

Just set 2 out this morning with 3 frames, now I will go add more foundationless for the outside.
@AvocaSingleTrack
@AvocaSingleTrack 6 лет назад
I would put the foundation frames in the front , rear and middle positions (1, 3, 5)...and the foundationless "open" frames in position 2 and 4 . This way they don't start to cross comb, the foundation frames act as a guide, keeping them in line. If the foundationless "open" frames were in the outside positions (1 and 5) I think they could cross comb to the box . Good luck Sir !

If you're using just foundation, try to get some burr comb from a bee keeper. Rub that onto your foundation frames ...and also rub it inside the box. In most of north america this is not the best time of year for swarms. Good luck

Steve, I need to hang my bait hive on my own property which is an acre. That puts it not far from my bee yard. When I move the captured swarm to my bee yard, how can I keep them from returning to the old location without moving them two miles away for a week?
@AvocaSingleTrack
@AvocaSingleTrack 5 лет назад
I bring swarms back and hive them in the evening, usually into a nuc but sometimes a 10 frame deep. I put some pollen patty on top the frames and give a comb frame, a honey frame and a little 1:1, (give some sugar if no honey frame avail). I close it up, I shim the telescoping cover off the box with 3/32 welding rod pieces (all for ventilation) . Then I put some small wood cubes on top of the telescoping cover, then a piece of scrap plywood resting on the wood cubes. This shades them and prevents overheating. I shove screen into the front entrance... Then i leave them in for 2 nights: the night i hived them, the next day and night...the next morning i open it up. It's about 36 hrs. Never had one leave with this method. Some people put branches in front of the entrance. The method I use always works, so it's what I do. If you don't ventilate it well, you could overheat them and kill your swarm. I do this for distant swarms and some i've caught right here. Anything else, feel free to ask. Good luck !

How much space do you need under your frames? I’ve built one trap before and had quite a bit of space under the frames and they continued building brood comb under the frames and it was a mess. I had like 6-10 inches of extra space. I’m trying to make improvements on my design, but don’t want to waste their efforts. I had 7 frames in total, but they were intent on building down instead of horizontally. So my only question is ho much space is needed under the frames.
@AvocaSingleTrack
@AvocaSingleTrack 3 года назад
You need to be checking your traps ever week to 10 days . Leaving the extra space will make the box more desireable but ...if you let a swarm go for too long then yes, they will draw the frames right to the bottom once they've filled the frames in the top. The alternative is don't leave any extra space below, you'll basically have a 5 frame nuc swarm trap of smaller volume which is less desireable. I've had best success with 5-8 inches dead space below and alternating the frames, Foundation frame front, back and center and the remaining two are foundationless with just string zig zag . This works
@Nepenthe6

Do you prefer brads or staples for assembly? What gauge and length are best? I know the glue does most of the work, but wanted to check. I am going to use 5/8 plywood.
@AvocaSingleTrack
@AvocaSingleTrack 4 года назад
I use either this finish nailer amzn.to/2pLBbyr or this brad nailer amzn.to/2MhAtRf I like these because they leave a nail hole which i can go over with painters caulk prior to painting. Then I have very few ways for water to get in. I do use alot of staples for other things, like telescoping covers, places where the exposed head of the staple is not a problem. One of my other video's I show the exact models of finish nailgun, brad nailer and staplers I use. I also mention the glue in a few videos. Thanks for watching and good luck !
@PaulHigginbothamSr
@PaulHigginbothamSr 4 года назад
those two empty frames would probably work better with old comb. Or some of your plastic foundations replace with old comb and then put the same two empty frames in so they can use their nasenof glands like they are promoted to do by evolution. they will treat the plastic foundation like tree obstructions inside so as to reduce the overall gallonage of the hive. They like 5 gallons of space.
@AvocaSingleTrack
@AvocaSingleTrack 4 года назад
comb frames would decrease apparent volume. Foundationless "empty" frames give more apparent volume. Using a comb frame is a good thing if you have it. If you watch thru the video I show how I rub old comb all over the foundation, frames and inside the box. It certainly helps.

How often do you re-bait your traps? And what kind of luck have you had with late season swarms?
@AvocaSingleTrack
@AvocaSingleTrack 6 лет назад
I got one swarm around July 3 and it built up 2 ten frame deeps and I got about 7 frames surplus honey in a super , from Sept/Oct Knotweed . I hive the swarms into a Nuc and top feed Jugs + pollen patties . They get a mix that I make, PH adjusted syrup and trace elements added . Anything after 1st week of July is pushing it. Plus the swarms are not as frequent past the end of June so it's not worth having all the traps out. I re bait the hole mainly, about every 14 days , like I show in the video. Maybe just a little sliver of LGO on a twig like once a every 3 weeks . Too much is a repellant.

Do yourself a favor and throw the lemongrass oil aside and buy swarm Commander, my luck doubled, tripled ... I would never use lemongrass oil again, also you should rub some propolis in your hive you'll do better than with that wax, but this is a real good video you covered pretty much everything, also I might add my traps do better shaded not full sun most sites on the internet save face South full sun I never catch swarms out in wide open where they get full sun all day. Not saying people don't but I've done to shade only because that's where I always have luck none of my traps in full sun ever caught anything so now I don't bother.. by the way not saying lemongrass oil don't work people all over use it and have success but I am a firm believer in swarm Commander, I have even noticed my own hives start to swarm and spread in a box and set it out there and they go to it, for real
