SWAT KATS: The only '90s cartoon that actually got an _upgrade_ for its second season.

This show is the reason why I've _always_ wanted a pair of fingerless gloves.

Damn, Swatcats animations look good even by modern standards.

That's not the whole story of how SWAT Kats ended. Ted Turner was butthurt that his environmental propaganda wasn't doing as well as the show that was around before he bought Hanna-Barbera, so he stired up some controversy about violence to get it removed. And Captain Planet lasted, what... 6 seasons? And nobody watched that shit. There was some personal meddling in this.

Interesting fact btw, The friendly aliens in When Strikes Mutilor were originally supposed to be humans. This is taken from the Swat Kats Encyclopedia who quotes Lance Falk: "The pacifist aliens were originally all wearing helmets and you couldn’t see what they looked like, because Mutilor took over their ship, and he changed the atmosphere to suit himself so it was poisonous to the actual owners of the ship, so they had to wear space suits. [The SWAT Kats] rally these aliens, they free the ship, they get the bad guy, and at the very end, the saucer’s taking off and the little computer voice says, ‘Okay, the environment’s back to normal,’ and [the aliens] look at each other and one says ‘Wow! A planet of intelligent cats! How interesting!’ and the other guy says, ‘Well, it’s a big universe. Anything is possible.’ And they pop their helmets off, and they’re human! And then you back away and see the American flag on the wall, and what you’re seeing in one fell swoop is that SWAT Kats is absolutely [set] on another planet in the future." It was only changed because one of the executives didn't understand it and told them to make them cat aliens instead which pissed Lance off.

Probably the best show that spawned from the mutant heroes craze that followed in the wake of TMNT. I honestly think it's held up better than the 80's turtles cartoon.

You know I wouldn't mind seeing this return in a reboot like Thundercats did before it got...canceled. Seriously though this was a show I watched all the time as a kid and with todays technology they could make it even better.

Almost makes you wonder if it COULD be rebooted for today's audience. Heck, the violence is pretty tame compared to other cartoons on air. (The new Ninja Turtles can get pretty graphic at times). I especially wanted Turmoil to come back. She was such an underused villain.

I remember seeing that intro back in the 90's and losing my shit as a kid. That animation! That style! That SWEET-ASS guitar solo!

Swat Kat got cancelled cause it was yoo violent?! How?! And yet Power Puff girls was still going on and that show had blood, decapitation and dismemberment, hell we even see one of the monsters eat the head of a citizen in one of the episodes.

Excellent job reviewing one of my favorite cartoons growing up. Swat Kats was a radical cartoon back when it first aired and it still is to this day.

I loved this show as a kid. The animation is incredible, better than a lot of big budget shows on today! It had cool tech and characters/villains as well. Very creative. Such a shame it only lasted 2 seasons.

I freaking loved this show as a kid. I still find it an insult to fans everywhere that this cartoon only had 2 seasons and F***ing Mega Babies got 4 seasons. People actually stomached that gross out cartoon over this though?! O~O

Ah i loved this show as a kid, even sent a letter to CN with a missile design I drew up. And yeah, it WAS really violent. Honestly surprised anyone still lived in MegaKat City since it seemed like every other day civilians were getting blown up, eaten or mutated into monsters(THEN blown up).

That point about Swat Kats debuting on 9/11/1993 is a double whammy. The obvious being the 9/11 but the year is when the towers got bombed the first time with a car. :( Just pointing that out. The review was wonderful. I loved seeing the bumbers which is a thing I miss. Still love Cartoon Network now but some touches like that I wish they kept. My favorite character was Jake Clawson aka Razor. Rob Paulsen voices characters that end up being my favorites save for Bubsy. Swat Kats was too good to last but I am glad it ended good than being dragged on and becoming irritable. Thanks Mr. Pan.

It wasn't until sometime later where the makers of Swat Cats got so fed up and tired of trying to bring back the show that they had made the next one, Mega Babies, out of cold bitterness, hatred and animosity. Its only purpose of existing was as a form of revenge toward not just Cartoon Network but the entire animation industry for trying to censor what the creators themselves saw as an excellent and well made masterpiece for all to see but to the establishment was too much for a company in infancy to handle...or at least that's what I believe. Oh, and great video by the way, Pan Pizza. Can't wait to see more from you soon. :)

This was and still is one of my favorite cartoon shows of all time. Lets just say the opening theme was enough to get me hooked.

In retrospect I think this show had the strongest influence on me as a kid. Given how uncanny it is that my anthro characters are closely based on Callie's design subconsciously.

Fuck, yeaaaaah! I remember loving Swat Kats as a little kid, and thankfully, it still holds up for the most part. I remember LOVING the fact that this show didn't handle death with kid-gloves and have everyone turn out safe every time. I also remember thinking the SAME thing of Ms. Briggs (I'm really not into furry characters either...but good Gob I'll make an exception for her).

You are incorrect, the main reason Swat Kats was canned was because Hanna Barbara wanted to focus all of its resources on the Real Adventures of Johnny Quest, the Violence was only used a cheep excuse to give Swat Kats and The Pirates of Dark Water (which was canned conveniently around the same time Swat Kats was) the boot. Interestingly enough the Real Adventures of Johnny Quest is still cited as being one the deciding factors to Hanna Barbara closing it's animation studios and being bought out by WB in the late 90's, and that's because(spoiler alert it sucked).

I love how nineties shows are almost indistinguishable from parodies of nineties shows with how over the top some of them got. I'd like to see IDW publish an ongoing Swat Kats comic or something.

I LOVED Swat Kats! Still have the figures & fridge magnet. I remember thinking, "let me get this straight..you cancelled Swat Katz but you keep 2 Stupid Dogs AND Cow & Chicken?! WTF, Cartoon Network...don't you even know a good series when you air it?!?"

I love that show so much mostly because of the different crazy awesome tech and the art style which Pan described perfectly.

It makes sense for SWAT Kats to be cancelled in '93. Ren and Stimpy was airing at the time and we all know what went on because of it.

Swat Kats was so fucking radical, I loved that show as a kid. And as a teen. And as a so-called adult. A duo of cool guys, giant monsters, fighter jets and explosions everywhere, it just hit all the right notes with me!

Chance Furlong (T-Bone) was my first cartoon/furry crush. And those of you wanting more of this series will be happy to know that 'SWAT Kats Revolution' is in the works from the original creators of the show.
