(FROM THE NATO CHANNEL)-- Swedish Air Force Gripen fighters practised the art of landing on civilian highways during an exercise near Gothenburg, Sweden on 21 May 2024. Swedish fighter pilots learn how to land on civilian roads to give them flexibility in the event of a crisis. If airbases, airports or auxiliary landing strips are damaged or unavailable, the JAS 39 Gripen fighters can land on roads that have been deliberately engineered to accommodate landings by fighters. On the ground, the Gripens make use of a mobile forward arming and refuelling point (FARP), gassing up in a matter of minutes before taking off again.The Gripen is Sweden’s premier multirole fighter.Footage includes Gripens landing on a road in rural Sweden, and interviews with Swedish officers.-SHOTLIST-(00:00) WIDE SHOT - GRIPEN JET OVERHEAD(00:10) WIDE SHOT - GRIPEN JET LANDING(00:18) SLOW MOTION - WIDE SHOT - GRIPEN JET LANDING(00:29) WIDE SHOT - GRIPEN JET LANDING(00:42) SLOW MOTION - WIDE SHOT - GRIPEN JET LANDING(00:52) WIDE SHOT - GRIPEN JET MOVING ON ROAD(01:00) WIDE SHOT - EMPTY ROAD(01:06) WIDE SHOT - GRIPEN JET TAKING OFF(01:22) WIDE SHOT - GRIPEN JET MOVING ON ROAD(01:28) SLOW MOTION - WIDE SHOT - GRIPEN JET MOVING ALONG ROAD(01:38) SLOW MOTION - WIDE SHOT - GRIPEN JET OVERHEAD(01:45) WIDE SHOT X2 - GRIPEN JET(01:53) SLOW MOTION - WIDE SHOT - GRIPEN JET MOVING PAST GROUND CREW(02:00) WIDE SHOT - SWEDISH AIR FORCE GROUND CREW VEHICLES PARKING(02:09) WIDE SHOT - SWEDISH AIR FORCE GROUND CREW SORTING EQUIPMENT(02:13) MEDIUM SHOT - SLOW MOTION - GRIPEN JET TURNING(02:17) MEDIUM SHOT - SLOW MOTION - SWEDISH AIR FORCE GROUND CREW(02:20) MEDIUM SHOT - SLOW MOTION - GRIPEN JET ENGINE(02:25) MEDIUM SHOT - SLOW MOTION - GRIPEN JET BEING ATTENDED TO BY GROUND CREW(02:35) MEDIUM SHOT - SLOW MOTION -SWEDISH AIR FORCE GROUND CREW LOADING MISSILES(02:43) MEDIUM SHOT X2 - SLOW MOTION - GRIPEN JET MOVING BEHIND PILOT(02:51) VARIETY OF SHOTS - SLOW MOTION - SWEDISH GRIPEN PILOT WALKING ON HIGHWAY(03:30) CLOSE-UP - SWEDISH FLAG ON GRIPEN PILOT(03:35) MEDIUM SHOT - BRIG. GEN. TOMMY PETERSSON OBSERVES GRIPEN JET ON HIGHWAY(03:45) SOUNDBITE Brig. Gen. Tommy Petersson, DEPUTY COMMANDER, SWEDISH AIR FORCE‘Three months into our NATO membership, I'd say Sweden is stronger and safer. And the Alliance is also stronger with us as an Ally, especially here in northern Europe.’‘This is a very long tradition. Today, we call it agile combat deployment or dispersed ops. For us, I call it normal operations. We started in the 60s to design the system. You must remember Sweden, non-Allied country, neighbour to the Soviet Union. We have always perceived the threat from the east, that we have to be able to leave our air force bases very rapidly. And this is a part of that. So, I say it's a part of our DNA.’‘I think Sweden is punching above our weight, when it comes to many things. And we have a long tradition of domestic arms manufacturing in all arenas or domains but especially of course, when we talk Air Force here, it's a fighter tradition. We started to build our own fighters during World War II, and we have continued ever since then. Then of course, the Gripen fighter of today is a multinational cooperation. There are many, different subsystems from many different countries, but this design is Swedish. And some of the key elements of the fighter are Swedish.Some of the design features that we can see here when they taxi behind me on the runway. Designed for 800m runway length and designed to be handled by conscripts in the field. ‘(05:12) SOUNDBITE - Captain Patrik Lange, Pilot, Swedish Air Force‘You're quite vulnerable around the main airbase if you get on the cruise missile attack or whatever you see in Ukraine, you know, the whole base can be destroyed. There is no way to again lift off with your aircraft or land and refuel and so on.So, with this system, you have like multiple small road systems all over the country. And so we can just drop down at one that is active. So, it's good for survivability in wartime, I would say.’Since it's a lot shorter and narrower, you have to be more careful where to point your nose, of course. And you don't have that much margin in case anything goes wrong, you know.’‘Since this is not anything we do every day, we have painted kind of this runway on the main runway. So, we train there, every day, and so. But, now it’s for real of course, you have, another extra pounding of your heart, of course.’But it feels good to be a part of NATO, and it feels like you're backed up with a lot of resources. And we can also back up NATO with our resources, our country and those kinds of airstrips.’SOUNDBITE - Colonel Adam Nelson, Wing Commander, Skaraborg Wing, Swedish Air Force‘Well, the biggest advantage of using highway landing strips is that you could have more possibilities and you could move around to more take-off and landing surfaces.’ The appearance of NATO visual information does not imply or constitute endorsement.

Entire Swedish defense forces on air, land and water are based on shoot and hide over and over again from a much larger invading enemy. (russia) a kind of guerilla tactic. That's why the airforce is built to land on temporary roads all over Sweden since the cold war era. 2 specialists and 3-4 conscripts in a hidden truck will gear up rearm refuel and they go up again in 15-20 minutes creating havoc. Have in mind that 70% of sweden is forest and there are hidden roads all over and different storage and bunkers all over. A regular fighter plane needs a very vulnerable fixed airfield that is a really highclass target and takes large logistics tasks and 1 hour to equip in many cases

Mixing up Sweden and Switzerland, perhaps? Swedish mountains aren't that high, highest one being just over 2000 meters. In fact, most ow Sweden is fairly low lands, seldom higher than 400 meters, with the (again, low) mountains being situated along the border with Norway - and that's probably not the direction from where Ivan/Vladimir would attack. (Granted, it would have been one of the major attack vectors if Adolf would have chosen to invade in WWII.) The major impediments for an attacker of Sweden is and has been throughout the cold war * Establishing a bridgehead if attacking by sea. Both the navy, the coastal artillery (when Sweden still had one..) and the air force had as its goal to stop a landing at any cost. Eg for the air force it was more or less a doctrine that when the first enemy set foot on Swedish soil all Swedish airplanes had been shot down. * If going by land (entering the north of Sweden from Finland) the terrain is difficult with few roads snd a lot of obstacles in form of rivers, lakes and bogland. Add long distances making logistics quite hard. If your vehicles can not move over harsh terrain, and don't have the ability to switch to amfibious mode for crossing waters then you won't move much at all. Narrow mountain passes is not on the top ten list of obstacles for an invader of Sweden. In Switzerland, yes.

The big problem for the F-16 isnt the landing gear, even if that can be an issue. The problem is the low, very big airintake for the engine. If the runway isnt clear from gravel, stones, sand etc, it gets sucked into the engine and destroys it. The Gripens airintakes sits higher and are smaller. The Russian intakes have covers that they use for landing and takeoff
@airailimages
@airailimages Месяц назад
And, if I recall, the MiG-29 can block the normal inlets and open air ducts on top of the inlet bay for takeoff to avoid FOD, switching to normal inlets when in flight.

Regarding take-off and landing Gripens (and Viggens) are much better than F-16. The latter is a Formula 1 car that sometimes gets flying. I am not sure if the F-16 will be so good for the Ukraine who was used to fly with Russian tractors (MiG and Su).

Why was the USA so successful during the Cold War? It implemented the Marshall Plan to economically strengthen its partners in Europe. The USA was the largest economy and opened its market to the products of its allies. The USA offered its allies a security umbrella with nuclear deterrence through NATO. As a result, America managed to push back the influence of the Soviet Union on Europe and ultimately won the Cold War. The alliance between Western Europe and the USA is proving difficult today. For example, Germany follows a mercantilist economic model and is therefore dependent on cheap energy and large growth markets. Russia and China can provide both of these for Western Europe like no other country. The USA, on the other hand, is becoming increasingly less important as an economic partner. And since the collapse of the Soviet Union, there is no serious military threat from Russia to Western Europe. Nevertheless, tens of thousands of American soldiers are still stationed in hundreds of US military bases and US nuclear weapons are stationed on German soil. If you look at the situation objectively from the US perspective, America is protecting Europe from the countries with which it has close trade relations. Europe's core interest, however, is to further expand its economic relations with the USA's biggest competitors. Don't be blinded by the politicians' rhetoric. Feelings, shared history, values, culture and traditions play no role at all in whether alliances really work. What matters is whether the interests coincide. And it turns out that the interests of Europe and the USA can no longer be reconciled today and this partnership will soon end.

No one in Europé wants to increase trade with China and/ or Russia nowadays ( except Hungary perhabs), on the contrary, all civilized countries regard especially Russia as paria/ outcast. But other than that I agree with you that Europé as a whole has a lot to thank the US for in terms of economic help and protection during and after WW2. On the other hand I totally disagree with you regarding the threat from Russia. Look at what they have done to Ukraine and they are constantly threathining all their neighbours and tries to expand their evil empire. It is vital that Ukraine get all the help and weapons they ask for.

As a historic note, rather than a comment on the current situation: The coin that was the Marshall plan had two sides. The one mentioned above (about strengthening democracies in Europe so as to form a front against the Soviet expansion westward). But it was also an aftermath of the enormous buildup of manufacturing industry in the US before and during the war, the immediate and huge scale-down of military production in 1945, and the return of millions of US service personel from overseas, that the internal US economy and "social fabric" would have been put under enormous pressure if nothing was done. By implementing the Marshall plan a (for the time) huge market was created in Western European democracies to which the US industry could export civilian, and to some extent military, products. Out of that comes the extraordinary 1950's, primarily in North America but also in Europe.

Compare the size of their landing gear to the robust landing gear of the Russians aircraft. No contest. Russian planes also don't need to have clean roads. Stones and nuts and bolts are not going to affect them.
@BJ-lw3vz__Björn_sweden
@BJ-lw3vz__Björn_sweden Месяц назад
Partly true about robustness, but the low weight of aramidic fiber and carbon fiber of a small plane makes a big difference. And the alloy and steel quality and suspension in landing gear also is a big difference, even compared to german and some Japanese steel /alloy. Still carbon fiber is much lighter and undetectable than titanium for velved and rounded forms with big surface areas. The fuel efficiency of the motor and sleek frame makes its fuel consumption extremely low-which means you dont need to land to often. The landing gear is testet and strenghened over the years without sacrificing weight or suspension performance Then there are helicopters and drones for the gravel and grass places:)

If you noticed, those roads are in use. They just stopped the traffic while the planes were landing, maintaned and taking off and then they just released the traffic again. Been doing this since the 1950's. The roads are not cleaned or prepared way before use. You can look up "Bas 90" and "Bas 60" ("Flygbassystem 90" and "Flygbassystem 60") on Wikipedia for a short introduction of the concept. These particular facilities were shut down during the "eternal peace" era at the end of the 1990's bus as one can see, it's still a thing but just a bit different.
