I simply love you. THANKS! I have 36 years, always love to swim and now that I’m preparing for the 10km ocean man, after swimming practice of 5km my lower back was killing me. Today I tried and I finally understand what is “core” I can feel the strength from my core protecting my column. Your explanations were so right. Thank you! I am definitely trying this tomorrow! I went yesterday and came home so sore in my lower back. It’s been years since I been lapped swimming. I don’t want my pain to discourage me. Thanks for the tip as well that made me learn it more. I can’t wait to try!

“Zipping up a pair of jeans” to naturally tilt pelvis forward - excellent! Stand up your sternum, perfect! Align ears, shoulders and (tilted) pelvis - great! I’ve been using these cues with my So Cal Tri masters team, dropping times and no more low back pain. Thanks CoachM!!!

Your one of the few that can communicate swimming in such a way that it can be understood especially for inexperienced swimmers. Thank you. I tried the catch up stroke you demonstrated in another video and it worked a treat for moving (with glide) through the water, :-)

THANK you for this! I went on a very long snorkeling adventure in Belize, for hours! Then when we got back to the boat and I sat down on the boat - YOOOWWWW my lower back was on FIRE and I could barely walk for a couple days! Thank you for explaining this!

I recently increased my mileage in preparation for a long-distance open-water swim, and started developing mild sciatica. The combination of your tips to "float the shoulder blades down" [maybe I translated your words to yoga lingo], think of zipping up your jeans, and rolling rather than twisting the body have worked magic! After 3 training sessions staying focused on that throughout, the sciatica is receding and I'm feeling the stroke improvement. Thanks!

Thank you so much for this video. I have been swimming for 20+ years competitively and I was too proud to accept that something might be wrong with my form but I tried the “jeans” tip and it alleviated all my back pain within a week. TYSM

Recently I learnt swimming and your videos were helpful. After watching this vedio on core engaging, I am reminded of my Yoga instructions for a asana Which helped me in swimming too. The instructions:- " Bring the feet together, Stand high, Raise your chest, Roll back your shoulders, Head high looking straight, Tuck your tummy in Squeeze your hips

I didn’t realize my swimming position was causing my lower back pain until I had to take a 3 week “Covid vacation” from the pool😫and my back pain disappeared. I’m going to try these tips today!

I tried it this morning and no lower back pain. So , thank you. Modest time /lap improvement but it was difficult trying to remember all check points. Definitely remembered zipper reference. Will take more time to refine.

We just put a pool in and alas my lower back hurts. This was helpful. I just had diastisis surgery (Had my abs sewed back together after birthing 6 kids). So my core needs retraining. I like the zipping up jeans analogy. Thanks.

Hi Coach, thanks for your videos - highly educational! Something weird happened to me tonight. I have been swimming nearly every day for 10 months and have been building up a good endurance - swimming 1700m every night now. However, out of the blue tonight I could feel myself drifting to my right, no matter at what speed I would swim at, I was always drifting to my right. I should add that I breathe on my left, either every two strokes, or every four. I am really disappointed and left confused because it happened out of the blue and I just could not correct it, it was as if I have forgotten to swim....so weird.

Dear Mandy, my compliments on this and other videos: I found here the advice that I didn't see anywhere else on the web and so well explained. After studying them a month ago I thought I would try to practice it and it was like a miracle: the moment I zipped up my belly button and tightened my stomach muscles my body floated up like on command! and by paying attention to proper rotation and kicking my back pain, shoulder pain, and neck pain just disappeared!!! I waited for a month before commenting while swimming regularly twice a week three-quarters of a mile because I wanted to confirm that the improvement is for sure, and it was. FYI, I am an older man who was swimming since childhood in the Adriatic and in recent years in the pool and the ocean. However, with age, I found that swimming was increasingly causing me a lot of pain to the point that I had to take a break; I was afraid I'll never be able to swim again. However, after chiropractic, physical therapy, and your advice it looks like I am back. I would like to continue improving my freestyle but also backstroke which is my favorite style and I am going to join your community 🙂

Wow. I had exactly this low back pain problem when I began to swim six years ago. If only I would have seen this before ;) Now, sometimes other swimmers ask me what’s my trick to stay so easily horizontal without kicking hard (and with no pullbuoy) and my explanations are not satisfying at all. But now I will give them the link to your video. Thank you for your great work.

Hi Mandy, I’m 59, started front crawl lessons about a year ago and made good progress. I still have a lot to improve and so I’ve watched a lot of RU-vid! I really like how you structure your videos with clear focus. I’m a low profile swimmer and my biggest battle has been reducing the drag from legs & torso. I heard about the belly button technique before which has helped me but your video has added to that. I wanted to ask you a question about your comment around the shoulder position at around 1’ 50”. You don’t mention this again in the summary. Should the shoulders (scapula) be engaged forward as the arm extends and maintained through the catch phase? Many thanks and looking forward to your next video!

Nigel Doe Hi Nigel, Thank you for your feedback and that’s great question. So I like to describe the movement of the scapula as “sliding” forward. This engages the shoulders properly without over doing it with tension (very easy to do). So it’s more of a shift which will help you stabilize by adding more weight essentially “downhill”. This will help support your legs higher on the surface. I will have more videos out on this subject and will go in more detail in the future. For now I hope this sheds some light on the concept. Great video, this is one of the issues I’m dealing with, I am trying to be more mindful of my body position in the water. I tend to lose some core engagement when I rotate to breathe

So, unless you are on the swim team or in the master program, you are not taught at the YMCA, too balance using your core. Which is a little strange because most of the swimming instructors at the YMCA use to be on the swim team

I've had back pain but it's constant never stops and its not only on my low back its on my whole back and my back is really straight, i got huge stretch marks on my back. The doctor said that i grew rapidly 3 inches in 2 months and i keep growing because of those stretch marks after swimming

Luca Gian yes it’s very easy to do with a pool buoy this is why it’s important to keep the core engaged if you do use it. Otherwise, the tool is just a crutch creating habits you don’t need.

Thank you Mandy. I have a rare genetic disorder called ehlers danlos which makes me prone to injury from repitive movement... Swimming. I currently have a massive shoulder problem. Please could you consider doing some drills to do when rehabilitation is key that doesn't involve over head or breastroke movements? 🌸🙏💕

Ginger Badjie I’m sorry you are going through this. I am not familiar with this disorder. However, I understand the over head movement situation as I have suffered from a shoulder injury in my past due to poor technique habits. When I had to eliminated overhead movements and focus on other areas of my stroke, this is what helped me. If you look at the second drill example in this video I mainly focus on this point and worked on core stability and a hip driven kick. The more you focus on core stability, the less likely you will try and stabilize off your shoulders improperly. I would still advise talking to your health care professional and finding out what the best solution is for training outside the water in combination with this drill. Hope this helps and sheds some light on what to prioritize while you are recovering. -🏊🏼‍♂️🙌🏽 Coach Mandy

I just recently tried imagining myself zipping up a pair of jeens, and I couldnt believe it but it works! And it doesnt just improve core stability, but it helps to focus kicking from your hips as well. It always amazes me how small simple things can sometimes mzke the biggest differences. So thank you!

Hi Tariq Afridi you should not feel pain in you shoulders. This means your posture is out of alignment which is mentioned in this video. Try the bonus tip as well as the examples shown. No worries. I am unable to attach a photo but look up “posterior pelvic tilt with flat back” that is the position you want your pelvis to move into. It’s just the long anatomical version. Hope this helps! -Coach M

Hi Coach Mandy, I have a question and I hope you could shine a light on it, I am a novice swimmer and I swim fine when I have a buoy between my legs, my strokes are fine, breathing is ok, I engage my core and my butt is close to the surface, but once I lose the buoy and add in the kick, I am out of breath within 100m, my legs are like dragging me down, is that something I did wrong? Thank you in advance

Yes the buoy is providing an artificial sense of balance for you. You have no established balance yet which is why you need this tool. I would definitely look through my last three videos to help shed some light on this concept as you practice. Secondly, you are out of breath because you have no established proper breath control yet. This will happen over time I will be coming out with a video on this concept later. However, for now I will link another video below in this thread to start getting you more comfortable with this part of the stroke. There is a consistent rhythm to breathing. You just are in the process of relaxing and finding it! -Coach M

hi coach mandy, i have a question to ask ,my arm hurt when i raise them up after swimming and i have a very low stamina and hence i find it very difficult for me to reach 25 meter pool , so i thought of going to the gym, but i find it difficult on how to adjust my routine between my swimming and gym,( also coach i did not opt for coaching since it very expensive for me sorry😅 but your suggestion is much appreciated).

Nangsanbha Lakiang Yes I completely understand. First, I would advise to make your swim practice right after your gym workouts so you finish in the pool. I’m just going back to swimming after a ten year absence. 20 cm ovarian tumor. Major surgery. Six months of chemo. I’m feeling a lot of low back pain. Spasms following a kayaking adventure gone wring haha.

I forgot comment about your question. When I keep my stomach muscles engaged my hips tend to rise up in the water compared to men I let them totally relax.Do you think you could do a video on how to create a swimming workout? Thanks!!!

@@SWIMVICE I have another question for you 😁. My coach has been having me wear short fins and a snorkel when we meet once a week for the last 13 weeks. When I practice on my own, I do just fine until I take my fins off. When I take them off my legs start to sink when start the stroke. I asked my coach this question and we are suppose to address it this Thursday. However, I would love to know what you think about this situation. Thanks!!!

Adrian Burton Adrian Burton no problem! Based on what your explaining, the fins have become a crutch to keep you moving. Fins are a great tool and provide very specific benefits. For example, improving ankle flexibility for the kick. However, just like a pull buoy, these tools can easily be used as a false sense of support. Your legs are sinking due to being out of balance. Have you tried the aquatic profile test I have linked below? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f1RRfhBQR5I.html If so, you probably have a lower profile as most men do compared to women. Knowing this will help shed some light on what your priorities are to keep your legs balanced and supported. If you have a low profile, the objective is to swim “downhill” maintain having both arms in front of your chest. Having more weight on the scale out front versus your legs due to a lower profile. This will help keep the legs higher and most important relaxed. Think of fins or snorkel to be used for a specific purpose if they are just used to swim with then they can become a false sense of comfort. Hope this makes sense. CoachM Definetely...I always end up with lower back pain or soreness. I think thay I have a great unbalance between my arm pull and kick...so I feel that my upper body is dragging the lower body, and can feel the stress in the lumbar muscles and I have had countless episodes of lumbar contractures. What do you think?

Tomas Artinano this video is spot on for addressing your issue 🙌🏽. So the reason why your balance is off is due to “pulling”. This action causes you to swim from your shoulders leading to your legs falling followed by your lower back arching (watch my freestyle demo where I go through this action). The next time you go to the pool go through the first two drills so you feel the difference and learn how to properly activate your core so you feel the stress ease off your back immediately. CoachM I promise you that I will try your drills. However I dont really understand what you mean with "the pulling is getting me off balance"...or..."swimming from my shoulders". I am very aware of keeping my elbow high and my hips ride quite high in the water...or I think so. Thanks a bunch.

I actually meant to write that what you have described about your stroke and why you feel this pain typically has to do with the action of “pulling” which drops the elbow and forces the stability to happen from your arms/shoulders. I have this point explained and demonstrated between 2:15-2:25 so this could be what’s happening in your case. I have L2-L3 lumber disc prolapse and also degeneration. It is compressing nerves and pain radiates. Rest of the lumber discs are badly bulged. I have joined swimming recently. I find it very hard to remain on surface and kick in freestyle and also my hips becomes stiff after some kicks. Any special suggestion for me plz.

Sharmi s I would say to let go of the kick and focus on relaxing your neck and legs. This will help you to not stabilizing off your legs which is adding to you feeling stiff. Allow yourself to relax and feel the water supporting you. This will help take the stress of your back and really feel supported properly in the water. What I have noticed while engaging core is that I feel less tired, I feel so relaxed after reaching the other end of the pool.

Conor McGOAT anterior pelvic tilt is the opposite movement. Where your lower back is arched and your spine is not neutral. “Zipping up” helps you correct the anterior pelvic tilt to neutral posture. 👍🏼 -Coach M
