I carry a Compact in a slip pouch in my pocket. I also attached a single pocket wallet thingy to my phone, which I keep my swiss card quattro in. Perfect edc for me.

First, I must say English is not my first language. Now, I've been following VicSpain channel even before it was created, we both used to post and chat in a certain internet forum. I can say that Marcos is really an expert. I recently discovered your channel and I must say it's fantastic, I really like your way of making these videos. As for me, personally, my EDC is a Victorinox Deluxe Tinker. It has all I need and I use it every single day, for sure! Great video, Anne

@@thevineclimber The 111mm version of the Handyman is the Workchamp. It's a larger knife and heavier and it's more easily carried in a sheath. The blades are longer, so they're easier for cutting tasks. Think for example if you're peeling a pineapple or a watermelon. The longer blades are indeed more useful. However, the 91mm do the job too and are easier to carry. You can't go wrong with either choice.

That's awesome, thanks! I really appreciate the specific comment. I am thrilled that people want to watch what I am putting out all of a sudden, but I am always a little puzzled by why! I'm so glad to find another fan of the nail care - It's such a basic tool set that it really doesn't get a lot of RU-vid play except for people briefly looking at it. No one seems to ever do anything with it! Maybe that's a video idea. Except that really all you ever do is use the tools and they work and there's not a lot video-worthy in that!

I LOVE the Handyman. But I've learned how to make a custom one by getting a swiss champ, removing the scales, and then, after getting the bushings off, removing the tools that I don't use often. I actually made one similar to the handyman except it has the magnifying glass and the Phillips. Oh, if you like the 111 millimeter sak then the hercules and the locksmith. Awesome knives. I have the Hercules on my motorcycle tool roll and the locksmith with my backup camp knife. Saw your knife sheath video and became a subscriber. Got something similar to the one you linked to because the one you linked to became unavailable. Awesome content.

@@thevineclimber I posted the custom sak on my RU-vid channel. Since I did the first one, I seem to have ordered a few used sak and have a lot of extra parts. If you want, I can make one for ya for free just so I can get rid of the extra parts. ha ha And yes! I know. I got lucky by getting the knife for 75 bucks. It was slightly used but still in mint condition. The locksmith will be the new classic in the 111mm series. Oh, if you want some good information on the knives go to SAKwiki. Highly recommend it. I will post the link to the sheath when it comes in after checking it out. Keep the great videos coming, young lady.

@@thevineclimber Thanks. It is really easy to do. Get yourself a used swiss champ and then file off half of the bushings until they slide out and then put them to the side. I took pictures of the tool sets so I wouldn't forget and then used the ones I used the most on it. Then just put everything back and hammer the bushings tightly until you get that snap sound of the tools and that is it. I got a bit crazy and made a few knives now. Ha ha I made a few "yeoman" type knives from the SAKwiki website that are no longer available. If you are the type that uses the knives instead of collecting them it makes more sense than spending serious money for a SAK that will sit on your shelf.

Another great video. I love thinking about good EDC combinations. I travel with a Jetsetter, SwissCard Nail and NailClip 582. To replace everything on the SwissChamp except the in line Phillips, pliers and fish scale tool, look at the Ranger + SwissCard Nail or SwissCard Lite. This reduces the knife width by 33% or from 33mm to 22mm or 0.87" which is pocketable for most...
@richardneff
@richardneff Год назад
My solution to trying to carry a large SAK is to carry 2 smaller ones: The Midnite Manager (58mm) on my keys (in one pocket) and a Compact (91mm) via a KeySmart (P7-style) suspension clip (in the other pocket). While there is some redundancy in the toolset, I find it has most of the stuff I use everyday. I actually like having the 2 sizes of scissors and 2 pens is always handy! If I know I'm going to be outside hiking or something, I might carry something like the Huntsman or the Camper if I think need the woodsaw. I've never owned any of the SwissCards, but it might be something I'll consider. But, I already have too much in my wallet, IMHO. And I typically don't like having a pouch or bag attached to my belt for EDC. (Although, I have no problems with doing so when outside hiking or the like.) So, I really prefer to have everything, keys, knives, wallet in my pockets. Hence my trend towards carrying my smaller SAKs.
@thevineclimber
@thevineclimber Год назад
I like your solution! It provides the same modularity that using the Swiss card for some basics provides. I actually think it makes sense to have 2 different blades and that's why I like that most Swiss army knives have 2 blades. They dull fairly quickly, and the 2nd blade means you have a sharp one available, probably. And honestly, the Swiss card is a practical solution, but it just isn't as FUN as having another SAK! Thank you for watching and commenting!

I'm a Ranger-guy since 1999 and I carry it here on the farm at all times (well, almost, I also got myself a Bosch-Outrider when they were so ridiculously cheap and sometimes use this one). When I go to town (like twice a month or so, I hate people) I carry a Workchamp.

@thevineclimber Год назад
So I did look this up to try to make sure I understood. You carry a larger knife when you go into town? Is that because when you go into town, you'll be too far from your regular tools so you'd rather have a bigger set with you? Or is it because you leave them in your car so you don't mind that the workchamp is a behemoth? The ranger seems like a great knife. I just re-watched a video by @minstrelontherun, who commented on it - and mentioned its very high tool density! And if course I want a Workchamp. Maybe when prices come down.

One of my most carried SAK's is a Farmer X. It does not have the corkscrew though so if I think I am going to need it the Huntsman is a good alternative. Besides the wine bottles you mention, I use it for picking out knots and holding the mini screwdriver. I have the tinder and ferrocerium insert for it, but generally keep the mini screwdriver. I think one of mine has some tinder at the end. I have tried reversing the mini screwdriver for more reach but generally have not found that all that helpful. I keep a Swiss Champ at my desk. I do have one I acquired that is a stripped down version of the Champion Plus which I sometimes carry in a belt holster. At the moment in response to your mentioning it, I am carrying the Swiza. I like that it has a locking blade with button release. I always thought that for that reason it might make a good scouting knife.

That's a nice collection!I never thought about reversing the screwdriver but I can understand why having such a big handle on such a tiny screw driver might not give you a lot of advantage even if it does improve your reach. The Swiza as an option for kids! I had not considered that.

For me the great thing about Swiss Army Knives is that you don't have to settle on one particular model for an EDC but you can carry based on where you are going and what you are likely to do. The Swiss Champ I carry (usually in a sheath) if I am likely to be doing small odd jobs, the Work Champ if I suspect heavier work. Just shopping or out and about, I will usually carry a Climber or Mountaineer or else a Spartan/Sportsman/Swiss Army 1 or similar pocketable model together with a with Classic SD (on my keychain). If I want smaller than a Swiss Champ but with scissors and pliers, I take my Deluxe Tinker. For hiking and travel I like the Outrider or the Explorer stowed in my camera bag. Variety is the spice of life :-)

@@thevineclimber You found me out !!! 🤣🤣🤣I confess I do like acquiring SAK-s, although I am not a collector per se. I buy them new to make make use of and collector's editions only if they have a combination of tools I find useful and not usually available - like the Christmas edition Climber Light last year. I considered the Hercules but opted for the Work Champ mostly because I find both types of saws useful. I would not carry it around as an EDC but the larger size is better for use in the the workshop and for minor household repairs/tasks. Most times I do not have to dig out my full sized tools to do typical thinks around the house, even when it comes to replacing doorknobs and such. I do like using the larger SAK-s for eating as well. I guess I am pretty lucky that I have an extra one put away (in reserve) to carry once the one that I use regularly is put out to pasture and joins my original 1985 model Champion for a well deserved retirement. Interesting review. Here are the tools I commonly use: large blade, nail file, scissors, cap lifter, corkscrew mainly for storing the mini screwdriver, pliers, and toothpick. After reviewing my needs I realize I already have the ideal tool... the Evolution 52. The Evolution S557 is another good choice for me. As a bare minimum I need a blade, nail file, cap lifter, and toothpick. So, if I want to go with something less bulky in the pocket I will carry a Spartan and I always carry a Classic or Rally on a SwissLinQ key chain holder. The 58mm knife pops easily in and out of the holder when I need it. If I carry a O/H tactical knife I still have a nail file and scissors (Classic) or a nail file and cap lifter (Rally). Why the Rally? Because I needed a cap lifter twice in the last few months.

@@thevineclimber I want a Compact, but all sellers are asking a premium price for them. About the Evo S52... I like the extra bit of safety the locking blade gives me. I can feel the lock when I grasp the knife, but it doesn't bother me. For many years I alternated between carrying a Waiter and it's Wenger twin. I paired them with a Wenger money clip and that gave me the necessary tools for most everyday situations. I have 108mm German Army knives (the same as the Victorinox Trooper) and SwissCards in my vehicles. I bought the GAK's when they were cheap and plentiful on the surplus market. So, we carry our SwissChamp, Evo23 or Evo S52, or some other large knife with everything, or we compromise and carry 2 or 3 less bulky tools, and that makes it interesting for us Swiss Army knife collectors.

But honestly that was just more of the charm and good memories of my trip. If I had this fork - you can pretty much drink any liquid and you can eat all of your other foods with the fork but you can't use the fork at the same time as you're using the knife to cut it so I'm not really sure about that? Also I don't really want to carry another knife with me when I go camping. So would I use it at home? I just can't see sitting down to dinner and having a Swiss army knife instead of a fork. It's big but I don't think it's too big as it's a one and done multitool so you wouldn't generally need to carry any other items with it, whereas when I carry a SAK with less layers, e.g. Climber or Farmer X, I tend to add a pair of Knipex Cobra XS and sometimes even a pocket bit driver as well which in total is more bulk. I checked the thickness of the Swisschamp and it's the same as my Climber and Hiker together, and I've experimented with carrying them both in the 5th pocket of my jeans which works so I could put the Swisschamp in there. I'm torn between the Swisschamp and the Handyman though. The Handyman lacks the inline Phillips driver, but I don't really need a fish scaler or magnifying glass for that matter. I've also been perusing the Tinker Deluxe as I don't really need a file and woodsaw on a day to day basis, out and about in the city. At the moment none of my 10 SAKs have pliers so I need to try one of those 3 models. I watched the Vic Spain vid about the discontinued models. I lived in Spain previously so I didn't need to put subtitles in English. He uses a very graphic expression to describe a knife being discontinued (se va a tomar por culo) so I've got no idea how they tried to translate that lol.

I don't own a Swisschamp but I checked out the dimensions online and basically by putting my Hiker and Climber on top of each other I have the same size, and this can fit into a 5th pocket on my jeans. If I carry a SAK anyway I tend to add something else for the pliers capability and other tools, either a mini multitool like the Leatherman Squirt, or Knipex Cobra XS pliers, sometimes adding a pocket bit driver to that too, which is more bulk in total. But none of my 10 SAKs have pliers (or inline screwdriver or file for that matter) so I'm always thinking about adding a Swisschamp to my rotation.

If u want a inline driver and scissor and the mini plier try the cybertool M, a very capable tool the u could complement it with one of ur other tools depending on what u might need that day. Me personally I pair my cybertool M or the S with a Alox victorinox, they have bigger tools more sturdy. I usually pair it with the electricians or alox 7for the M and for the s a alox with scissors. think there is a discounted cyber tool L with file and saw but the “L” are heavier in the 5th pocket. I usually have a leatherman on my belt hip so don’t really need a file or saw

Spreading your options from massive swiss champ to 2 or 3 smaller tools is best option for many ? My solution to carry the swiss champ is Level 1on keyring always with me leatherman squirt which gives a mini but capable pliers tiny blade very capable tiny file a small flat and Phillips, the scissors is a joke . Level 2 I go with the small Recruit, Tourist or Sparton, good size blades good flat /pry and I mod the can opener to give good small flat (with good clearance) /Phillips. I complement the small SAC with a knipex cobra 125 which is way better than even the largest multitool pliers. Level 3 if i need a saw or scissors i add a huntsman or Swiss champ, or just take a small toolkit . I rarely need or use the scissors, i get by with the blade or if in the house or car /work i always have scissors at hand . Same with saw not something i use a lot ,but bring the farmer or huntsman as and when needed. Looks like the swiss card is giving you good options as to what your main SAK to carry .

Do you follow Felix Immler ? in his latest video he uses a finger nail file to sharpen his Swiss Army knife. If you could modify one to replace the plastic one in your Swiss card you would have a nail file and a knife sharpener with you to sharpen your larger knife.

Hitch Post, Felix Immler is terrific. The nail file is glass according to Victorinox. Out of curiosity, I tried something similar, not Vic, and the abrasive was just a coating, not etched glass, so it wore off. Disappointing. Generally I use diamonds, with metal backup from the clipper, and something smoother for light finishing use. Not particularly obsessed with nail care, just with long-life, low maintenance gear. I do have a split nail now, so the diamond hone gets more use than I would like when it grows out and snags on something. Now I appreciate the person who always carried a Vic Cadet in its nail file version as he had a split nail. I just carry the Eze-Lap I mention which serves when I need it, without having to worry if my EDC has a file on it. That can save a layer too.

@@thevineclimber Do you see any of my answers to your questions? One long probably a run-off-at-the-fingers response, then a shorter one since that disappeared, which answered your sturdiness question and retail source "question," in much shorter format. I think they are being stripped as I supplied a link. I would not mind the link deletion from the post but dislike the wasted post. I will post a truncated link to a KnifeCenter page for the Model H separately in case it disappears. As to sturdiness the small Model H is 1/16 inch ferrous metal, probably stainless steel. Note my review of it on that page as to how I use it and how I carry it.

What do you use the magnifying glass in your day to day? I personally carry the handyman. It is small enough that I actually forget that I carry it on my pocket but has all the tools I really need (bar the pen which is the easiest to replaceable) out of the SAK. I really think it is the best EDC Victorinox. Slimmer than the champ and I never found a use for the fish scaler nor the magnifying glass anyway.
@thevineclimber
@thevineclimber Год назад
You make an excellent point! And it has a very high tool density, like the ranger. The most tools per layer! I use my magnifying glass all the time because I can't see that well when things are close up. But it does such a great job magnifying things that you don't even necessarily realize are there! For example, we were working with some wire and my husband needed some information off of the wire jacket and it was printed extremely small. But it was easy to see with the magnifying glass. That being said, if my eyes were better I would not use the magnifying glass. I think that it is a tool that becomes more useful especially during the time of life where you're not ready for reading glasses but your eyes can no longer focus on tiny things that are close to you. Which is where I am! But magnifying glass aside, do you wish you had an inline Phillips? I'll also mention that I actually use the fish scaler a lot. I use it for poking things, like removing that gross blob of soft soap that dries onto the tip of the pump.I also use it for opening some kinds of cardboard packages that are glued but where there is warnings not to use a knife such as if you get something from ikea. I also use it as a straight edge when I'm writing in my notebook. And I'm constantly measuring things so it's nice to have it with me for the little stuff that it can measure. Thank you so much for your comments and I love that you love the handyman! Sometimes I feel like that knife gets left out.

I watched the Vic Spain video. I looked at his channel and it does seem like he has some insight information on what's going on at Victorinox. I believe it enough that I personally purchased some items that I would not have purchased otherwise. Some of the items on the discontinued list I've noticed have been hard to find, like the Tinker Small, Executive, and Gardener Grips, so I believe it I guess for those... I read the list in a video, and put the list in the description, because at that point there wasn't any English language complete list that I could find. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NUA4jtVc-5o.html. It stays put in the corner of my jeans pocket, the lanyard under my belt and does not move and the tool is ready to go whenever I pull it out.

I've never been able to deal with scissors on a knife or multi tool. However, for about $10 or $15 you can get a 3 pack of real scissors that work so much better. I keep a pair in my car, one in the kitchen and one wherever else I need one. They work so much better then the little ones and save room on my knife.
